Why DFA him and allow another team to pick him up and use him later on while the Yankees are responsible for his salary? No, stash him on the DL, let the insurance cover the contract, and move on. You’re only helping him by DFA

I’m fairly certain that his salary is recovered through an insurance policy. Would that policy still apply if he were cut, I don’t know, but I don’t think it would. Technically once you cut him you paying him a buy out and not his salary. The policy would be made out to cover his salary in case of injury.

They’ve gotta have some basic kind of insurance that pays for his medical expenses and stuff. But as far as insurance to cover his salary, I dunno. I think that’s a case-by-case basis, not a blanket policy.

I remember hearing a couple years ago that some team wasn’t able to get insurance to cover a certain injury prone FA, and they ended up not doing the deal (I’m not insinuating anything, I really don;t remember who it is).

I think the bigger question with Pavano is whether the Yanks have any insurance on his contract and might they benefit by him having surgery and missing the rest of his contract…
