The Yankees as the girl of your dreams
There's really no excuse if the Yanks lose this series

Short Season Staten Island and the Rookie level GCL Yanks kick off their seasons tomorrow. I’ll be very surprised if 13th round pick Nick Chigges (22-3, 2.42 ERA in his final 2 years at College of Charleston) doesn’t start Opening Day for Staten Island; he’s clearly the most accomplished pitcher on the staff (but what the hell do I know?). No clue who starts for the GCL squad.

Triple-A Scranton (7-5 win over Durham)
Kevin Reese: 0 for 2, 2 R, 3 BB
Andy Phillips: 0 for 3, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K – batting average dwindling down to .300…
Eric Duncan: 1 for 5, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Shelley Duncan: 1 for 5, 1 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 K – 8 RBI in his last 3 games
Bronson Sardinha: 1 for 4, 1 K
Alberto Gonzalez: 0 for , 1 BB – 0 for his last 14
Juan Francia: 3 for 3, 2 R, 1 BB
Run-Elvis: 4 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 2 WP, 1 E (throwing), 7-3 GB/FB – 94 pitches in 4 innings? at least he’s more economical than Julio Lugo’s contract (za-zing!)
Chris Britton: 2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 0 K – 10 H & 6 ER in his last 6.2 IP…
Edwar: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 Balk – when you’re this dominant, you’ve earned first-name-only status
Jim Brower: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K – didn’t allowed a baserunner in 6 of his last 10 outings

Double-A Trenton had a scheduled off day.

High-A Tampa (6-4 win over Fort Myers in 14 innings)
Reegie Corona: 2 for 6, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K – 2 XBH in his last 21 games…
Colin Curtis: 1 for 5, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K – hitting .370 over his last 11 games…
Jose Tabata: 2 for 5, 2 RBI, 2 K, 1 SB, 1 HBP
Juan Miranda: 0 for 5, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K
Edwar Gonzalez: 0 for 7, 2 K – reached on the error that led to the 2 go ahead runs scoring
Marcos Vechionacci: 1 for 5, 2 BB
Frankie Cervelli: 1 for 6, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K – for the first time since April 17th, he’s going to bed with a sub-.300 BA
Kevin Russo: 2 for 6, 1 2B
Phil Coke: 4 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 4 K
Josh Schmidt: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K – so ummm…yeah…way to come in and do your job
Gerardo Casadiego: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 WP
Mike Martinez: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
Eric Wordekemper: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K – caps off a night off brilliant work by the bullpen

Low-A Charleston is off until Thursday for the All-Star break. Jon Hovis, David Robertson, Mitch Hilligoss and all 6 of Eduardo Nunez’s XBH will represent the River Dogs. Seth Fortenberry inexplicably has to watch from home while Nunez inexplicably gets to play.

Yankee draftees in the College World Series
Taylor Holiday, 1B, UC Irvine (19th rd): 2 for 4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 HBP, 1 E (catch) in Irvine’s uber-dramatic 5-4 walk-off win in the 13th inning over Cal State Fullerton
Matt Morris, LF, UC Irvine (23rd): 4 for 7, 1 R, 1 K

Morris singled with runners on 1st & 2nd in the bottom of the 13th, but Holiday was gunned down at the plate by an absolutely marvelous throw from left fielder Josh Fellhauer. The longest game in College World Series history (5 hours, 40 minutes) ended when the next batter singled home the winning run. Fullerton goes home, Irvine lives on.

Walk-offs in the 13th inning of an elimination game … Zesto’s … Erin Andrews in a tank-top … believe you me, it gets NO better than Omaha.

Josh Schmidt needs to be released immediately. he’s really hurting the development of the guys in the field.

    Mike,

When do you think Wordekemper gets promoted to Trenton? Pitching spots are crowded there but he’s been terrific and Tampa doesn’t seem like enough of a challenge. And Robertson and Hovis? Do you think they’ll be in Tampa soon?

Wordekemper is a weird case. He was absolutely fantastic last year, but this year he’s “just” been very good. He’s not really a prospect, but if he keeps performing, they should just keep moving him up. I mean, my heart wouldn’t be broken if he stayed in Tampa all year; you need older veteran guys like him to help show the kids the way.

Hovis and Robertson will probably get bumped up to Tampa as soon as the All-Star break ends. Hovis isn’t a true prospect either, but man is UNC missing him in the CWS. Robertson is a prospect, and he’s been worthy of a promotion since late April.

They weren’t afraid to agressively promote Joba after only 7 A-ball starts (7! that’s unheard of), so they shouldn’t be afraid to jump any of these guys after half a year.

Hey any injury updates on hughes

Same old with Hughes. He’ll start throwing off a mound in a few weeks, should see game action by August. Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Yanks kept him in the minors the rest of the year.
