Edes: Gagne may be staying

By Benjamin Kabak

While some sources had previously reported that Eric Gagne was Bronx-bound, the latest word has him sticking in Texas. According to a report by Gordon Edes, Rangers owner Tom Hicks has pulled Gagne off the table and wants to sign him to an extension. What’s Plan B?

Update: Ken Rosenthal, who by my account hasn’t slept since Saturday night, echoes this report. The Yanks are no longer confident that they can acquire Gagne.

Mike says:

Plan B = Jon Rauch?

NYFan50 says:

Plan B = don’t trade for a reliever. Just dump Farnsworth for whatever and call up Joba and Ohlendorf.

It looks like the Yankees are going to trade Proctor to the Dodgers for Betemit.

That would send Basak (or Duncan) down and bring up Chamberlain.

That’s a pretty good upgrade for both the bench and the bullpen…even if it is a fairly minor trade.

Rick from Boston says:

ESPN’s reporting now that’s it been agreed to in principal. I like Proctor, but I don’t see how he could ever survive pitching for Torre. Betemit is good insurance for A-Rod. If A-Rod stays, then Betemit can play 1st.

Mike NYY says:

Shoot, I think Gagne fits in well.
