I think Villone proved himself unreliable last night because of the two wild pitches. It is just deflating when a team gives up runs because of mistakes. It made it worse that the run turned out to be the difference when Baltimore came back to tie it. Imagine how deflating a loss last night would have been. Torre likes veterans, esp. veteran pitchers because they don’t usually beat themselves over. Villone this season is clearly shooting himself in the foot with walks (and wild pitches), and this is a understatement.

I do agree that Edwar and Britton should be up here instead of Villone. Last night though was more up with Torre’s stupidity with the pen. Wang shouldn’t have been out there for the 7th, he was shaky all game. Nothing was really hit hard on Villone and the run that scored was a wild pitch (obviously his fault)

Hey – I really and truly hope that I’m proven wrong. This is one thing I don’t want to be correct about, and I also think that using a pitcher once every two weeks is wrong. (Vizcaino in a 9-2 game? Really?) He is killing batters in AAA this year, true.

Edwar is also not the same pitcher so many teams gave up on. That change up is disgusting and he didn’t have that before he came here.

Perhaps the answer to the Villone quandry is to use him, as with Chamberlain, only to start an inning, and use someone else when there’s already a runner on base. Not ideal, I know, but it should not be impossible to plan to bring in Villone to start the 6th or 7th inning.

Just to stress the point that Mike and Joe have already made, Wade Taylor's Minor League numbers were awful both before and after he made it to the Majors, and Jeff Johnson's were no better. Edwar, on the other hand, has 102 K's in 56.2 IP, and he sports a nifty 4.6:1 K:BB ratio. That's ridiculous.

Chuck, the difference between the Johnsons and Taylors — and even the Kamanickis — and Edwar is that Edwar’s numbers are disgusting. He’s struck out nearly two batters per inning pitched. The others had pedestrian strikeout and walk numbers.

It doesn’t matter how many organizations Edwar’s been with, he’s on a roll right now and can help the team. If he flames out and we never hear from him again after the year, then so be it.

If used in a normal way (i.e. not every 2 fucking weeks), he’s be an asset.

I don’t know about that… Edwar has done great in AAA, but so did Jeff Johnson & Wade Taylor & Sam Milletelo & Christian Parker & a score of others that one can think of. There”s a reason why Edwar’s been in a bunch of different organizations over the past couple of years, and I have a hard time believing that he’s just “slipped through the cracks.”

I mean, Farnsworth & Villone can let up six runs without getting an out just as well as Ramirez can, and they’re already being (over)paid by the team.
