Game 138: It’s like the 2003 ALCS all over again

By

Roger Clemens is starting with Mike Mussina ready in the bullpen. Sound familiar?

Meanwhile, to address a point that Rich raised in the comments to this post, at some point, Joe Torre simply has to go with someone else from the bullpen. Sure, these guys won’t be consistent, but they will get outs. Edwar Ramirez had one great inning yesterday, and he could have done that in the 7th with Joba in the 8th.

No one has a sure-fire bullpen anymore, but other managers trust their relievers enough to go to them in close games. If Torre is willing to use only two people when the Yanks are fighting for a game, the rest of Septembe — not to mention the playoffs — could be problematic too. It’s not ideal, but it’s better than watching Andy Pettitte, who has a history of elbow problems, throw 119 pitches in back-to-back starts.

The lineup that will face King Felix today:

Damon LF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui DH
Posada C
Giambi 1B
Cano 2B
Cabrera CF

PeteAbe reports in today’s game thread: “Andy Phillips told us that he has a fractured right wrist, the result of getting hit by a pitch yesterday. He is about to be examined by a specialist. He is likely to be out for the remainder of the season.”

  2. Jersey says:

Oddly, that’s only the 4th meaningful RBI of the season for ARod.

Of course, if that will change if the Yankees lose this game. Or win by more than a run.

  3. Stylez says:

Only the 4th meaningful RBI this season???

  4. Zack says:

Well, Moose in the game. At least it should hold of Torre’s desire to start him again for 5 or so more days. Course, if he shows he is evolving, then its a win-win

  5. cjc says:

it would be nice if this team would start doing some of their own dirty work

    terrible

  6. Joseph P. says:

I know the weather is sort of similar, but would someone please tell the Yanks that it’s not fucking May?

Talk about the pitching all you want, but the hitters have been beyond pathetic.

  7. Zack says:

Well, not like this is an important series or anything. Typical 2007 Yanks eh?

  8. steve says:

4th important RBI this season !? i remember him hitting a walk of grand slam …. thats four right there and that was in may.

  9. Jersey says:
