Twins’ GM Terry Ryan resigns

By

In a shocker (at least to me), longtime Twins’ GM Terry Ryan is resigning. Ryan is widely considered to be one of the best GM’s in the business, as he’s built quality teams for years by emphasizing player development, a strong farm system, and shrewd trades. Assistant GM Bill Smith will assume Ryan’s post.

I don’t blame Ryan for pussying out before the offseason. He’s got Santana, Hunter, Morneau, and Nathan to deal with. Johan and Nathan aren’t free agents but they will cause some distractions, and Morneau is due for a big payday.

can we read into this that the Twins weren’t going to fork over the $$$ to keep most of these guys that Ryan has developed?

Carl Pohlad has finally run his team into the ground. Thank God we have the Steinbrenners.

I’m not sure why exactly he’s leaving, but I’d agree that it’s probably the Pohlad’s fault. This guy has been one of the top GM’s in the game for years – I believe he’s won multiple GM or Executive of the Year awards from various media outlets. He’s worked well with his managers and he’s made some shrewd moves – Santana in Rule 5, the Nathan/Liriano/Bonser for Pierzynski deal, drafted Mauer at #1 instead of Prior. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up working for Drayton McClain in Houston next year.

In the press conference he stated that he is staying with the Twins as head of scouting and player development.
