What are ya gonna do?

By

Nothing. Who cares? When your $200 million team has only two guys who get outs in the bullpen, you won’t win playoff games. It’s that simple.

Blame Luis Vizcaino for being utterly terrible. Blame Cashman if you want. Blame Torre for sticking with Matsui. Blame the bugs for the distraction and Posada for his inability to block Joba’s sliders in the dirt. But really, you need more guys who can get outs in the bullpen against the 7-8-9 hitters and you need hitters who are going to hit. What can you do?

The Yanks can easily beat Paul Byrd and Jake Westbrook in the Bronx. That’s hardly a tall order. Clemens on Sunday; Wang on Monday; Pettitte in Cleveland on Wednesday. We can do it.

That was heartbreaking. Truly heartbreaking. It’s totally irrational but I feel like the gods conspired against us with those bugs in the 8th. :-( Three hits in 11 innings? Sad.

Like you say though — it ain’t over yet. We’ve done this before. You gotta believe.

  • http://riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Blame the whole fucking team. It’s not just Matsui or Posada, Jeter’s not doing anything, Damon isn’t doing anything, A-Rod isn’t doing anything, no one is.

8 hits over 20 innings is pathetic. They allowed 1 run over the first 9 innings today, and 2 over the whole 11 innings. That’s plenty good enough to win.

  • Pfistyunc

We have a two man bullpen, yet you retards want Cashman retained. I am baffled by that.

    • http://riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Relievers are so unbelievably volatile, you act like it’s just a matter of going out and getting the best available bullpeners on the FA market to solve the problem.

Year in and year out, the vast majority of the top 20-25% of relievers in baseball are guys you never expected to be that good in Spring Training. It just happens, and for what it’s worth, the bullpen this year is far, far better than any of the ‘pens they’ve had in the last few years.

      • Pfistyunc

Your statement about years past speaks volumes about Cashman’s ineptitude in years past moreso than the success of this season. This guy signed Farnsworthless, brought back Myers and Villone, yet people wonder why our bullpen sucks.

*Wasting Britton in AAA and giving Edwar and Bruney innings is a whole other topic.

    • Count Zero

      “…you retards…”

See — now that is why everyone hates you. Right there. If you can’t refrain from that sort of shit, then don’t post.

I would say something really nasty about you but it would be a waste of my breath…I pity anyone who deals with you in person.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

I forgot to mention that. If you want Cash fired and A-Rod traded, that’s perfectly fine, post that. Don’t start calling people retards.

Knock it off or we will ban you from posting.

    Pfistyunc:

I am, in part, agreeing with you. Cashman’s gotta take some heat here. You need guys in the bullpen who can get outs and he isn’t providing them. The gnats were terrible luck but I also think that Torre has to go to Month with two outs and a runner on third in the bottom of the 8th. As good as Joba’s been, Mariano is the guy you want pitching there in the 8th no doubt.

    • Pfistyunc

That may very well be the case Ben, but that is just nit picking on one particular inning. Far and away, the larger problem is that our GM is remarkably incompetent and should have been replaced six years ago.

  • cjc

boy everything you wrote is dead on but 7 hits in 20 innings an undermanned bullpen Joba dealing with a sign of the apocalypse its tough to see this team winning 3 straight. Fingers crossed that Roger shows up and the mo turns Sun.

  • j smith

REGARDLESS OF WHAT HAPPENS THIS YEAR, THIS TEAM HAS GOT TO CHANGE DIRECTIONS. WATCHING TORRE IN THE DUGOUT IS GETTING SO PLAYED OUT. A-ROD IS MIND BAFFLING, LET HIM OPT OUT AND BRING SOME OTHER TEAM DOWN IN BIG GAMES – FORGET A BIG HIT HE CAN’T EVEN GET A SMALL HIT IN THE PLAYOFFS. GONE ARE THE TEAMS OF THE 90′S WITH GOOD BULLPENS AND SCRAPPY SINGLES HITTERS THAT BORE DOWN AND PUT TOGETHER RALLIES. 3 OF THE YANKEES MISERABLE 4 RUNS IN 20 INNINGS ARE ON SOLO HOME RUNS. IT IS TIME TO REBUILD. THIS GETS MORE AND MORE PAINFUL EVERY YEAR – I WOULD RATHER THEY DIDN’T EVEN MAKE THE PLAYOFFS.

    • http://SportingGurus.com Adam

Please, for all of us, don’t post anymore.

  • Pfistyunc

The saddest part is that they should be even worse next year. Moose’s salary will mandate a wasted rotation slot and if not you still have to deal with the growing pains of Joba, IPK and Hughes. Add in the virtual certain regression of Damon, Matsui and Posada as well as Melky’s reaffirming that he is nothing more than a slappy reserve outfielder and I would be stunned if they make the playoffs. Fucking pathetic.

  • Stephen

Nice post. It was a tough loss but no need to wallow in self pity. The series is certainly far from over. Hope for a decent outing from Clemens, send Wang out for game 4, its safe to expect better things from him when pitching at home. Then go for a Sabathia-Pettitte showdown in game 5. Stanger things have happened.

  • Pfistyunc

Don’t get your panties in a bunch kid. I firmly stand by the statement that anyone who could observe this team since 2001 and want Cashman retained is a fucking retard.

    • Count Zero

And I firmly stand by my statement that someone who resorts to calling anyone who disagrees with him a “retard” is someone I don’t want to know. What’s more, you should consider counseling to deal with your inferiority complex.

Do you think we aren’t all pissed? Do you think we aren’t all dismayed? Do you really believe you are the only Yankee fan who was completely leveled by that game? Don’t take your anger out on us — we’re just as depressed and angry as you are. Go beat up on an Indians fan or something…

HINT: If you can’t convince people with your logical argument, name calling certainly isn’t gonna’ do the job.

      • Pfistyunc

Thanks Dr. Phil. “Retard” is just a slang term I used. I had no idea that you would be so fucking offended. Lighten up dude. If it gets the sand out of your pussy, I could just have easily interchanged retard with idiot, moron, dipshit, etc….I was merely poking fun of the fools who think retaining Cashman is a good idea.

        • Count Zero

You are so troubled that I am filled with sadness for you. And I say that with the utmost sincerity and sympathy for your plight. At least you finally figured out how to use the “reply” function.

Maybe if your grammar could pass an 8th grade English exam, I might actually feel threatened by your prodigious intellectual powers and I would be forced to cower in fear of your upcoming dimwitted barbs! But as it is, I feel more secure in my belief that you are nothing more than a hideous carcinoma on the rear end of humanity. Thank you for the confirmation.

I salute your steadfast belief in your mental superiority in the face of such overwhelming evidence to the contrary, Sir! It is indeed admirable. I trust that while wrapped in your cloak of self-congratulation you won’t take the slightest offense at my certainty that YOU are in fact the one who is mentally challenged. :-)

          • Pfistyunc

Jesus Christ, lighten up dude. I realize we are all a little touchy with the Yanks getting beat, but I can hardly say that I am surprised. Just go back and watch tapes from the past two years and you shouldn’t exactly be stunned at another first round exit.

        • Yankee Fan in Chicago

You belong at Lohud dude. Take your schtick there. Retard indeed.

  • cjc

    what are you 6

  • cjc

Joba is getting murdered on WFAN totally murdered he has to get the outs that inning its fair ut dang Malusis is harsh

  • Lil Jimmy Norden

your post says it all ben…

  • D

Yeah, we should mos def fire Cashman. With elite front office talents like Steve Phillips and Jim Duquette out on the market, how can we lose? And we can always beg an elderly Stick Michael to re-assume the GM duties, right?

3 hits in 11 innings and Brian Cashman should be fired because Torre beat Luis Vizcaino to death this year…the internet is full of horrible fucking ideas.

    • dan

I think we need to re-sign Mike Stanton and Jeff Nelson to fix this “problem” of giving up two runs in 11 innings. And maybe even bring back Chad Curtis, Scott Brosius, and Shane Spencer to fix the best offense in the league.

  • dan

I don’t know who Pfistyunc is, but he just started commenting here recently and for some reason hates everything. I don’t see the point in liking or watching sports if you don’t enjoy them. He starts some kind of fight in every post that he comments on, this most recent one attacking other commenters on the site. If I had a vote, I’d vote to block him.

  • johnny

please? 3 hits in 11 innings is unacceptable…the pitching wasn’t the problem at all..once again our hitters can’t come through…from Pete Abe’s blog(keep in mind this is the entire series thus far)
    Damon 1-9
    Jeter 1-8
    Abreu 2-6
    Rodriguez 0-6
    Matsui 0-7
    Posada 0-7
    Cano 1-7
    Cabrera 1-8
    Mientkiewicz 0-4

  • yankz

Sure, Viz sucked, but it shouldn’t have gotten to him anyway. The Yankees pitching gives up 1 run in 11 innings and they find a way to lose. It’s all on the offense tonight.

This whole “950 runs, dead in October” thing gets old.

I’m just waiting for that moron Cash-hater to respond with “Cashman should have gotten a better lineup together” like he did yesterday. I know dude, fuck him for not signing Lofton and Eckstein- they’ve PROVEN they can do it in October!!!

    • yankz

Er, 1 run in 10 innings.

  • Barry

    we have no other choice

  • Yankee Fan in Chicago

The bottom line is that it was the hitting tonight, not the pen, that crapped the bed. If you told me this morning that the Yanks would only give up 2 runs tonight, I’f have said we won handily.

Also, someone probably commented on this in the game thread, which I don’t have the heart to read, but did y’all catch the announcers slurping Carmona’s knob, talking about how no one throws a 95 sinker? Uh guys, I know Wang didn’t bring his A stuff last night, but do your effin homework.

    • kris

I am Yankees fan in L.A. Here we have to watch what pass as news anchors take cheap shots at the Yankees. After game 1, one gloated: “[And] if Yankees blow this one?”, to which another added “This after the Mets?” Announcers act like shameless homers to keep their jobs, I understand. In the rest of the country, it is just fashionable to take shots at anything from New York.

  • johnny

this game was completely heartbreaking….to have all of these players that dominate in the regular season, it just doesnt make sense to crap out all at once..its not like posada, jeter, giambi, matsui, etc havent been here before…i dont care what anyone says, carmona’s stuff wasn’t any better then when we beat him in august.

    • yankz

It really was. I agree with you, this one’s one the offense, but Carmona was ridiculous tonight.

  • http://RiverAve.Blues Joseph M

There was a movie many moons ago called “It Happens Every Spring”, well this could be the sequel “It Happens Every Fall”, the Yankee hitters with all there gaudy numbers and gaudy reputations do their annual imitation of the 59 White Sox known at the time as “the hitless wonders”.

Where did everyone go? What happened to Jeter and his 200 hits, AROD and his 156 RBI season, Posada and his .337 average?

Torre certainly bungled the rotation by starting off with Wang instead of Andy, but it’s more than that, let’s face it. The offensive is their but it just doesn’t do the job. Why? Can the highest paid manager in baseball help us with any of this? Look the Yanks could save about 6 mill and hire Art Howe and get these results.

I am a hard lner, to me if this team goes down Torre and yes Cashman go, end of story. A fresh look, a rethinking of team building is an absolute necessity. Somethings wrong and it needs to be fixed.

  • E-ROC

The season isn’t over yet. Speculate when we’re out of the playoffs. Torre can still make some changes to try and spark the team. We have a couple of days speculate on what he’ll do.

  • kris

The Yankees hitters over the last few seasons tend to be shut down en masse. They need a mix that is more consistent at scoring on a per-game basis (maybe at the expense of scoring fewer overall). We have legit starters (including Joba next year) for a less potent, more consistent offense to work.
BTW, I don’t think the team will be worse next season. As dark and gloomy as it is right now, this trial by fire of Joba and Hughes makes the future even brighter.
