Jason Lane is in their ears and in their eyes

More curses per minute than Goodfellas
Twins questioning Melky's offensive abilities

For some reason, the Yanks seem to be interested in Jason Lane as a potential first base solution. Lane, 31, is a career NLer with an offensive line of .241/.314/.457 and one good season under his belt. He’s also played a grand total of four career games at first base. Why bother?

I agree. As much as I don’t look forward to seeing a year of Duncanstien’s monster at first, I don’t see much point in getting someone else in unless they’re gonna be a significant upgrade.

  • Count Zero

    Ugh.

    • mg

Don’t despair. I doubt this happens.

if they sign Lane and stick him in AAA, it’s a great signing.

he can play all 3 OF positions and some 1B.

he hit 26 HRs in the majors a few years ago. if one of the OFers got hurt, it would be great to have a real life major leaguer to fill in.

despite what this article says, i don’t think they are seriously considering him in the starting 1B mix.

    he’d be a great AAA insurance/bench guy.

He may just be auditioning in Spring Training. Could Duncan’s recovery from the clot not be going so well? What about as the final roster spot if he’s good for the entire outfield + first base?

  • Rich

I would rather try Matsui at 1B.

  • pounder

    bring back minky.

Ain’t happening. They didn’t offer him arbitration, and he wouldn’t be able to re-sign with the Yanks until May 1 now.

      • steve (different one)

Ben, i could be wrong, but i think they did away with that rule.

  • E-ROC

Jason Lane could be a good 4th outfielder. I think Scranton needs some veteran help over there so it wouldn’t be a bad signing if it’s to fill out AAA roster.

This is just plain stupid if true.

The Yankees prefer this scrub over Andy Phillips who they DFA’d?

Phillips WAS their BEST option at 1st base.

    I don’t get it.

    • steve (different one)

you don’t get it because you are under some strange impression that Andy Phillips is not a scrub. don’t worry, he is.

    • Glen L

      his career OPS+ is 76 … yuck .. he’s NO ONE’S best option at 1B

I got spoiled a bit by Minky last year with amazing defense at first base, but I’d rather see them stick with Duncan rather than go after someone like Lane (although for reasons stated above, such as his serviceability as an outfielder coming up as an injury replacement, I wouldn’t mind auditioning him at Spring Training). I realize Duncan couldn’t hold a candle to Dougie Alphabet defensively, but I’d at least like to give him a shot and see if he can handle the everyday job. I don’t see Betemit at first, he is better suited as the Miguel Cairo role of utility infielder (now that A-Rod is here to stay).

For all his flaws, Giambi still has considerable pop in his bat, and unless we could move him (and we really can’t), we’ll make the best of it for another year. If that means living with Matsui in left – something I’m not against, although I’d prefer Damon over there, with Melky in center – I could deal with it.

Just for speculation…does this seem to be the everyday roster for next season then (as an order, guys can be moved, I’m more interested in defensive positions)?

    Starting Lineup:

    LF Damon
    SS Jeter
    RF Abreu
    3B Rodriguez
    2B Cano
    C Posada
    DH Giambi
    LF Matsui
    CF Cabrera

    Bench:

    1B/DH Duncan
    C Molina
    Util. Inf Betemit
    Util. Of Gardner/Lane/?

    • Alex

i don’t think playing two guys in left and none at first would be a good idea. could you imagine arod running across the diamond to tag the runner every time he fields a grounder?

Matsui at 1st base is a very interesting thought. He is so fundametally sound that he could pobably do an at least average job there – probably better than any of the aternatives this side of betemit.

i have to say though that i would like to see betemit get the shot. as we saw last yea, this kid has a ton of potential, but just cant seem to put together consistan steaks . he got a ton of really bug hits for them. i dont have his stats off hand, but his RBI to hit ration was very high. he has always been critisized fo not having his head in the game all the time. perhaps now as he is getting older, he may put it together. for me, he is the most talented guy of the Duncan/Lane/Betemit/Minky trio. Giambi would be nice if he could field, but watch out for him to have a huge year next season and if he stary healthy – i see girardi using him as an everyday player at DH with a little 1st mixed in

dont count out a sping traing deal if/when teams see a healthy and roductive Damon/Giambi/Matsui. last season, before the injuries there was rumblings of a chone figgins for giambi deal – i’d love to see that come to frutition as chone is one of my favorite players in the game

    • barry

Figgins is not that good, plus he’s never played a lick of first.

  • barry

I don’t understand how he would be a better option than Duncan.

  • Spike

Should never have gotten rid of Phelpsy.

  • dan l

Would rather have Mench instead. He has a much better career Ops against left handed pitching. Mench must know by now that he is just a bench player and doing so as a Yankee should appeal to him. Also I wonder if he can play first? The Yankees need a Mench type to platoon with Abreu as he is terrible against lefty’s.

Also could Mike Morse be gotten from Seattle?

    • steve (different one)

i like Mench as a bench player.

  • http://yankeesetc.blogspot.com/ Travis G.

i really believe a platoon of Shelley/Betemit will play at least an average offensive 1b in 2008.

iif figgins can play every other position on the field – he can play 1st. besides i want him because he can play many different positions very well and he is an offesensive forcce – look what he did at the end of the year last season

not better than damon? you are kidding right? damon is over the hill – clearly. figgins is a great contact hitter who can bunt and bun on the bases which is exactly the type of player the yankees need. he could even play center in a pinch and probably do bette than damon there
