Even though King George is clearly dedicated to winning, making sure his team has what it needs to be a top of the line outfit, and understands the business concept of spending money to make money, I wouldn't consider him a Hall of Famer. I wouldn't consider any owner a Hall of Famer unless they made some incredible contribution to the game. Revenue Sharing that supports other teams doesn't count because even though the owners voted it in, they wouldn't do it if they didn't absolutely have to.
Great owner, but not a Hall of Famer. Blowhard and shrewd businessman, Yes, hall of Famer, No.

"Padres fan checking in…as a fan of a mid-market team, I’ve railed about how George has hurt my team more times than I can count."

Get real, Mr. Steinbrenner's money has lined the bank accounts of your second-rate team's coffers for over a decade. Hurt your team? Mr. Steinbrenner should, by all concepts of fairness, be a minority owner of your team.

I come down on the "no" side. If anyone has a moment, check out my argument here:

http://yetanotheryankeeblogger.blogspot.com/

Otherwise, I'll state it here: Big Stein hasn't done enough for baseball, as a game, and to me, the Hall-yes or Hall-no difference for a non-player/non-manager has to be his wider effect on the game.

But I could be wrong....

Lots of talk about him and the Hall back in 2004:

"I don't want to be in the Hall of Fame. I don't think owners should be. Maybe Connie Mack. But not George Steinbrenner. No way. It's for players. If they have an owners Hall of Fame, I'll consider it, but believe me, I don't want to be in the Hall of Fame. I don't belong there."

Padres fan checking in...as a fan of a mid-market team, I've railed about how George has hurt my team more times than I can count. But he is absolutely deserving of a spot in the Hall. More than anyone else, Steinbrenner is the one person who was the driving force behind the commercialization of the game. George was the one who figured out that there's a whole lot of money to be made here; his efforts have completely changed the landscape not only of baseball, but of all sports in this country. He is the one who made owning a ballclub less an expensive hobby than a profitable venture. And, perhaps more than any owner in baseball, he understands that fielding a winning team will make him money, so he invests in his club accordingly. I cannot fault him for that.

For all of these things, he gets my vote.

No owner has come close to the dedication which GMS has shown to both his team and the sport. That alone should be enough for a spot.

There isn't even a question if he should be in the hall of fame. The best owner in sports history deserves a place there.

George absolutely belongs in the Hall. No question. There have been times, in my years as a lifelong Yankee fan, that I wanted to punch him out, but he deserves to be in the Hall.
