Hank, Papelbon square off

By

Jonathan Papelbon should probably keep his mouth shut.

After Hank Steinbrenner criticized Red Sox Nation in The Times’ Play magazine a few weeks ago, Papelbon railed into Hank. “I don’t know if he’s trying to stir things up or not,” the Bosox closer said. “I sure as hell don’t care, because he sure as hell hasn’t stepped on a baseball field. He needs to just stick to pencil-pushing, I guess.”

Hank fired back in a Post article.

“Being insulted by Papelbon is like being attacked by a mouse,” Steinbrenner said. “John Henry and I traded a couple of jabs good-naturedly. So now, all of a sudden, this player, this 20-something kid who really doesn’t know his way in the world, comes out with a personal insult. There’s no excuse for that.”

I have a feeling that if you were to ask the Red Sox their thoughts on this, they’d probably tell Papelbon to stay out of this. Let the big boys argue; you play the game on the field.

I hope A-rod takes him deep again this year.. and hopefully more than once… He and beckett make the perfect pair an airheaded dick and a classless cunt.. apply to whichever one..

      wow, the c-word.

And just like that, “Mouse-lbon” is born.

Ben Kabak should probably edit his.
    (re-read the first sentence)

Well, he should keep his mouth. I don’t want his mouth. Do you?

      Edited. Thanks, Dan.

It is very sad indeed when a pricipal owner of a team gets into a verbal “pissing match” with a player, any player. Your guy Hank is trying a bit too hard to bring attention onto himself.

My sense is that he is so concerned that the “Yankee brand” has lost so much steam internationally that your man Hank will do almost anything to draw attention. Pretty soon he’ll be singling out the clubhouse guys.

Success on the field is the real answer Hank!

    • Casper

Mr. JimT, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

In case we needed proof that Red Sox fans are delusional…

      • Whitey14

Ben, you should be more responsible than to make a blanket statement like that.
I’m not delusional, I believe Papelbon should keep his comments to himself, but it looks much worse for someone in hank’s position to even dignify the comments with a response. He’s like a teenager with an ego, he just can’t keep his mouth shut.

        • Whitey14

By the way, classic comeback casper! I’m always up for some Billy Madison quotes….

I read this blog along with Bronx Banter, most of the Red Sox blogs and even a few others associated with other MLB teams. I’ve got to tell you the world has really changed. It wasn’t that long ago that Red Sox fans would concern themselves with the Yankees in much the same way people on this blog obsess over the Red Sox. What better example than the inane “Yankees suck” that was often heard on Yawkey Way when the Red Sox were in second place. Today its all different. Read some Red Sox blogs, the Yankees are discussed to be sure but with nowhere near the vitriol you folks reserve for the Red Sox. Whether its about Schilling, Youkilis or Papelbon you just don’t get those sharp and insightful comments like Armand Castro’s directed at Yankee players on Red Sox blogs. I guess all that nastiness is a by product of second place.

    • Armand Castro

Hey I got special mention!!! Yay!! I’m sharp and insightful!! Yay!!.. go stick to a sox blog then why don’t you.. my invective is directed at their actions not the people themselves.. look up their actions silly silly man..

    • http://riveraveblues.com Mike A.

With all due respect JimT, I frequent soxprospects.com because the forum members there have some good debate and insightful info, but it’s readily apparent they are still obsessed with the Yankees. Don’t feel bad, Mets’ fans are the same way.

  • E-ROC

ET aka Papelbon should just shut his trap. As Tupac said to Nas: When grown folks talk, n**** close yo mouth.

    • Whitey14

did you seriously just quote tupac?

  • chazzh

JimT- relax, big boy- Full of yourself much, this is first year in a LONG time the Yanks have been in second place. Don’t worry- the sox will be back in third place (like 2 years ago) in no time. You are delusional to think that Yankee fans think about the Red Sox half as much as vice versa. I never ONCE heard a Red Sox Suck chat. The idiot Red Sox Nation chat it at Pats games. Checkmate.

  • RZG

I’m a Yankee fan and you guys attacking JimT are really juvenile.

OOOH, Mouselbon, Papelputz, that’ll show them, make fun of their names.

And Armand likes to show how cool he is with cursing.

It sure brings down the usual quality of this site.

    • Armand Castro

I apologize RZG.. it just really bothers me how Papelbon and Beckett seem to act so juvenile as well that i am driven to that same fault.. and i must say, cursing is not cool. I was just alluding to the fact that Beckett seems to do so quite liberally (and more specifically the curse i used).. but of course i’m only 20 so i guess I can be a little juvenile, but nonetheless. Sorry

      • RZG

Thanks for apologizing. I don’t want to sound like a prude but things here are usually very high quality.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

We can debate the merits and maturity of name-calling for hours. Let me pose a question though:How many times have Sox fans called Jeter a fag or referenced Gayrod. You can’t claim a high road when one doesn’t exist.

That said, we all should go a little easy on the hatred and vitriol.

  • http://riveraveblues.com JimT

Red Sox and Yankee fans do have a special kind of relationship. We are perhaps more similar than we are different, with a unique passion for our baseball teams.

I actually sort of like the Yankees is a peverse sort of way. I don’t like them as an entity, but I have enormous respect for Jeter, Posada, Rivera, Arod and in particular Matsui (a very underrated player). Baseball is more interesting when both the Yanks and Sox have good teams.

Also, Papelbon is a loose cannon but Hank is a senior manager in a multi million dollar enterprise. Don’t you think he could act with a bit more decorum?

  • pete

woah big boston-yankee brawl going down on river ave blues.
i love hank i think he’s hilarious b/c he never actually disrupts his own team, he just goads the others.

    • AndrewYF

So true. He has nothing but good things to say for anyone who’s a Yankee. And if someone sucks, I really don’t think he’s going to start insulting them. Hell, I don’t think he’s even mentioned Kei Igawa’s name! I completely understand why most people hate him – he has a big mouth, and he says what’s on his mind. I think the reason Sox fans TRULY hate him, though, is because he is not his father. He’s not going to wrest away the reins of the team and do whatever he wants. And that is what, deep down, scares Sox fans the most. It’s why sometimes you see their desperate attempts to ignore facts and frantically tell everyone who will listen that Hank is George II, so therefore the Yankees are in for a long ‘dark period’ or some nonsense.

Hey, bottom line, if Hank talks about their team or their players Sox fans have every right to be upset.

  • Steve S

my god the season has to start, there is literally nothing left to talk about. we already got the cliche pseudo sophisticated Red Sox Yankees stuff going on.

  • bostonsucks@life

I mean I guess when all is said and done Papelbum can always use his river dancing skills on one of those ridiculous reality shows, or he could dance his way into oncoming traffic. But hey yet we all forget the red sox and their fans are all class and man does it show. Why do I feel that he is going to get glorified for this on espn?, to which I will throw my breakfast up.

  • GoYankees

Good for papelboy. He seems to have forgotten it’s the men with the pencils that ink their contracts. He’ll come crawling and begging forgiveness from Hank one day.

    • Whitey14

Sorry, but if the Sox ever do let Papelbopn get away, he won’t have to beg the yankees for a job. There’ll be several teams lining up and the yankees will be one of them. Unless, of course, they avoid their recent practice of trying to sign anybody they feel the Sox are interested in. It’s worked out well for the Sox (Damon, Clemens, Pavano), but I’d say the results are mixed at best for the yankees.

      • Whitey14

By the way, that’s some neat pencil you’ve got if it writes in ink ;-)

I’ll keep it simple…. it’s just TOO easy to make fun of the Red Sox. You’ve got your guys taking off your shirts and dancing around despite the fact that his Pillsbury body looks like it has NEVER seen the inside of a gym, when they are wearing shirts they’re skin tight see through lace, dancing a freakin jig on the mound in your underwear, dating the Penthouse Pet or whatever…. then you’ve got a kid who woke up one day and thought he found enough courage in his big boy pants to take on one of the steinbrothers….? Just FYI – the Red Sox are the ones who started calling a certain third baseman “slappy mcpurple lips” , and I’m sure that’s not the only “nickname” they have coined…. if you don’t like the comments or the articles it seems silly that you would still come back to this site.

    • Whitey14

You don’t seem to like some of the comments you’re reading, but I bet you’ll be back too.

In case you haven’t noticed, and judging by the attendance, you haven’t…
the more you you insult us Red Sox fans when we’re here, the more of our friends we’re inviting to join us.

We can all get along if people will stop chucking insults back and forth. I’m just here to learn more about the yankees, their players and their fans.

Also, point of reference, the name calling between fans of each team did not start when arod hit town. It’s been going on for decades and I’ve never heard him referred to as slappy mcpurple lips. Ever since he got to ny, I’ve heard yankee fans making fun of him moreso than Red Sox fans. He’s done more to help us and than hurt us since he got there so we’re pretty happy he staying.

  • Colin

See, some of these posts are what I can’t stand about simple minded fans. I am a Sox fan who reads this site, so of course I question a lot of what people are saying. Yankeechic26…that was the dumbest thing I’ve ever read.

I obviously don’t like the Yankees, but I never join in the “Yankees suck” chant and what other garbage the Sox fans do. No, Jeter doesn’t suck, A-Rod certainly doesn’t and so on. It’s so dumb when people say that. And Yankees fans do the same thing too. I had the “pleasure” of sitting in the RF bleachers during a Yanks-Sox game and the Yanks fans had some stupid song they sang about Trot Nixon being a horses ass. Just stupidity at its finest..

Again, Papelbon can say whatever he wants to. He’s earned that right as an elite player in this league. He didn’t say anything that wasn’t true. And I expect Big Stein to say something back, because he’s a Steinbrenner, so I fully expect him to fire back. It’s not “classless” that these media war is going on.

    • Whitey14

      Colin,
Nice to see another Sox fan on the site. I’m learning more and more as I go that people will disagree with a lot of what I have to say just because I’m a Red Sox fan, but the true classy users/posters here (and there are quite a few) are willing to listen to what you have to say and if they feel the need to disagree they will do so politely and they will use facts to back up their argument. I sometimes fall into the trap of shooting my mouth off, which is nobody’s fault but my own, but above all, I try to be honest all biases aside.
I just want the folks here to know that not all Red Sox fans are stupid, useless, classless, delusional etc., just as I’ve learned that about yankee fans over the years and even more so on this blog.
