I'm not a big Bruney fan but maybe Joe G is thinking he needs to give him positive reinforcement and maybe he'll throw strikes. I think Patterson was the guy but there is probably some utility in keeping Bruney until he blows it. The Yanks saw Bruney and saw Patterson and determined that, from their perspective, they would rather go with Bruney first. He's younger and has better pure stuff, I think, than Patterson.
