The mean old Pirates struck out Billy Crystal

While everyone appeared to have fun during this afternoon’s celebration of Billy Crystal’s birthday, one writer for The Times thinks that the Pirates blew a golden opportunity to earn some good baseball karma. Writing on the Bats blog, Richard Sandomir takes Paul Maholm to task for throwing Crystal a steady diet of sliders and cut fastballs. “Had Maholm laid it in for Crystal, he might have been reciting David Letterman’s Top 10 list on Friday. Instead, he’s the pitcher with a career 10-15 record who whiffed a comedian one day from turning into a sexagenarian,” he writes. Ouch.

But if Maholm gave up a hit then he’d never live it down.

i don’t think so it was all in fun so he wouldn’t have been taken to task for it he could have even said happy birthday afterwards..now he just looks silly proud to have struck out a 60 year old man pitching to him like he was Johnny Damon lol.

No i realize it’s all fun and games, but I’m sure his teammates and some of the media would give him a hard time about it. It was a lose-lose for him, except for the experience of saying that he actually pitched to Billy Crystal.

  • blah

He had to strike out Crystal to preserve his dignity. I would have done the same thing.

Had the team all agreed to allow Crystal the opportunity to reach base, he wouldn’t have needed to keep his dignity. It’s a stunt during Spring Training. You guys are a tough audience!

He could have exaggerated the pitch and smiled and laughed and shown that he was intentionally throwing a meatball over the plate. THAT would have been good press. Everyone would know he meant to give Billy a good chance at it. As it was, Billy made contact which is either impressive for Billy or bad for Maholm.

Ten bucks says that’ll be the highlight of the Pirates’ 2008 season.

Ughh this is completely off topic but, whats up wit the mike lupica ads, he makes me sick.

      agreed.

Billy Crystal looked like a little league player out there and actually took some pitches. Maholm should’ve just played along. I don’t think a hit by Crystal would’ve cost him a roster spot. Yeah, the Pirates really blew it.

Sorry, but if it were me, I would have done the same thing. Billy Crystal does not belong on a ML field even during spring training. If he wants to play with the big boys then he should be treated like one.
