Tyler Kepner tells us that Jason Giambi asked out of the Yanks’ trip to St. Petersburg today, citing a minor lower back issue. The Giambino has been known to aggravate his back in the past, especially when manning first base. He’s been doing this a lot during the spring. Hopefully, a day or so of rest gets him back on track.

But, but, but. Giambi came into camp in the best shape of life. Wasn’t he supposed to be immune to injury?

Those parasites must be back at it again…

Neil says:

I love Giambi, so I’m definitely biased, but if he can recapture his opposite field swing we stand a good chance to get 400+ ABs from a .300 hitter with .400+ OBP. That’s the kind of production we haven’t seen since Giambi kicked Tino out of the Bronx.

P.S. Great to see Tino helping out in Tampa.

blah says:

Giambi will be lucky to get 300 ABs this season.

Cue the rise of Shelley “Spikes” Duncan!

I don’t know. Looking at the hit, it doesn’t look like much. Shelley always slides like that as far as I can tell.

Ben K. says:

There’s some brawl talk in the Pettitte post down the page. More coming soon.

mike says:

it might be a convenient injury to avoid a bus ride…

Joseph P. says:

Eh. St. Pete is only 30 minutes tops from Tampa. Fort Meyers, now that’s the one you want to avoid.

J.R. says:

It might also be that the veterans didnt really play this game… Notice pettite didnt make his start. Id rather have my rookie throwing at batters than my #2 pitcher.

Ben B. says:

Can we please wait until he misses extended time before we list him as injured?? Plenty of guys get sore during ST.

Maybe he just didn’t feel like making the drive.

Count Zero says:

Yeah! This doesn’t count! I have April 21st BTW…

RobertGKramer says:

Avoid the bus ride and let Duncan start at 1B! Same with Petitte!

Rich says:

Giambi:

Giambi said he was simply worn down a bit by the more strenuous work the Yankees have been doing in spring training. “I’m going too good now,” Giambi said. “I don’t want to mess that up. I’ll be fine.”
