The Yanks wrapped up their weekend roster moves this afternoon and now find themselves with a righty-heavy bullpen. Billy Traber, after proving that a lefty can’t always get out other lefties, finds himself heading from Cleveland to Scranton, and Shelley Duncan makes his triumphant return to the Bronx.

For the Yanks, the bullpen now contains a bunch of hard-throwing righties and LaTroy Hawkins. While a few folks will be dismayed at the Yanks’ seemingly non-traditional approach to the bullpen — Where’s the lefty? Where’s the long man? — as long as these guys throw strikes they can get out lefties and righties. Plus, they’ve managed to survive without a strike-throwing lefty, and they haven’t really been burned by the lefties. It’s no different today than it was yesterday.

The Yanks, meanwhile, face back-to-back lefties, and I guess today’s the off-day for the lefty hitters. While C.C. Sabathia and his Cy Young Award go tomorrow, Jeremy Sowers will be making his 2008 debut against the Bombers. Bobby Abreu, Robbie Cano, Hideki Matsui and the switch-hitting Jorge Posada all find themselves on the bench today.

Jake T says:

Sorry, but the Yankees website doesn’t have the updated roster, what is the new pen?

zack says:

Mo, Joba, Hawkins, Ohlendorf, Alby, Britton, and Farnsworth (injured?)

zack says:

Maybe it really was the manager last year that forced all those annoying moves, b/c this year I’ve been pretty darn pleased with all of the roster moves. Sending down Traber (if Farns isn’t going to the DL) was definitely the right move as he simply was not getting the job done and not an innings eater. Plus, that leaves Britton and a relatively fresh Joba, Mo, and Hawkins (meh). Ohlie could probably use one more day off, but Britton should be good for at least 2. The problem of course being if Kennedy gets bombed early. But that would be a problem no matter what.

I suppose if Kennedy gets shellacked, we might see Britton sent down for Rasner after the game?

Ben K. says:

If Kennedy gets shellacked, they’re not sending down someone else to take the blame. They may consider sending down Kennedy and bringing up Rasner though.

Zack says:

True, but they haven’t shown much faith in Britton in the past. Hopefully that is changing, but I’m not so sure they would demote Kennedy just yet, unless of course he shows a total regression today…

Mike A. says:

Rasner’s starting for Scranton today, so unless they yank him from the start between not and first pitch (6 or 7 tonight, I forget), he won’t do the Yanks any good over the next 4 days.

Joey says:

Cap’n in the 3 hole? Just may be crazy enough to work…

Ben K. says:

Derek’s had 552 career plate appearances out of the three hole. He’s hit .334/.408/.449 as the three hitter. Definitely could work.

Joey says:

Hopefully it’ll help him bust out of his little slump

GoYankees says:

Cabrera hitting 2nd is a better idea anyway. He is as close to a 2-man as the Yanks can do.
Giambi is hitting 5 again? Maybe he is not cooked after all? ;)
Lack of a long man in the pen is still a big problem. If there is a need, like there was a couple of games ago with the rain delay, several arms become useless for the next couple of days, and there are no arms left for a lefty-righty 7th inning combo. Therefore, goodbye, Billy.

GoYankees says:

Changed my mind, AG is better hitting 2nd.

Joe says:

Let’s just hope Kennedy starts turning it around, because that’s definitely not the best offense the Yankees can put out on the field…

mike b says:

for the love of god, what does edwar have to do? am i taking crazy pills here?

Ben K. says:

I’m going to go with develop another pitch so that he doesn’t end up giving up 19 runs in 21 innings at the big league level as he did last year. The 2 hits and 1 walk with 13 strike outs over 9 MiLB innings this year is encouraging, but the Yanks probably know something that we don’t if they haven’t called him up yet.

mike b. says:

i guess… but given that he was so dominant last year in the minors, this spring against major leaguers, and this year in the minors i think its easier to call a couple of bad games after too much rest last year the outlier.

LiveFromNewYork says:

I think he needs to gain weight. And I’m not kidding. He needs to look a bit more not like Urkle.

nick says:

or it could be that they sent him down less than ten days ago. they also had sent alby down less than ten days ago, but they could recall one of them due to the bruney injury. alby is more highly thought of than edwar, so he got the call.

mike b. says:

yeah, i just don’t understand this concept of how a player is “thought of”. Edwar comes in and strikes out practically everyone he faces, every time he is used.

Ben K. says:

Except for the 19 earned runs he gave up last season in 21 innings. That’s not an insignificant part of the Yanks’ considerations.

Mike A. says:

Ver-non Ghol-ston, clap, clap, clap clap clap, Ver-non Ghol-ston, clap, clap, clap clap clap…

E-ROC says:

I hope Gholston works out for ya’ll but I would be worried. Don’t put too much expectations on him. Might not meet them.

dammit. i wanted mcfadden. gholston’s overrated, but here’s to hoping he’s shawne merriman

Mike A. says:

Holy crap, does Kevin Long have braces? It looked like he did when he was reading the lineup.

Ben K. says:

I was just about to ask the same question. I think so.

E-ROC says:

My Ravens just traded out of the 8th spot with the Jaguars. I was hoping they’d draft Leodis McKelvin. They better get it right or I’ll be pissed.

E-ROC says:

It didn’t take long for Tim McCarver and Joe Buck to talk about Hank’s comments.

Simon B. says:

Uh, LaTroy Hawkins averages 95 MPH on his fastball.

Ben K. says:

You missed my point. It’s not that he doesn’t throw hard; it’s that I don’t like LaTroy Hawkins on the Yankees.

Simon B. says:

Evidently. Care to explain it?

Simon B. says:

I didn’t know Admins could edit comments.

Ben K. says:

Edit and delete, but we only edit our own comments and only if we hit Add Comment too early :)

Ben K. says:

This guys are talking out of their asses about Joba right now.

Mike A. says:

Don’t they all talk out of their asses about Joba? He can’t throw 100 over 6 innings, he can over 30 pitches. Well duh, but he can throw 94-96 for 6 innings, and that’s plenty.

Kennedy has some kick to his fastball.

Jamal G. says:

Well since my Giants don’t pick until the latter part of the draft, all my attention is on MLB. Even though knowing me I would give a hell if Giants were 1st pick, baseball always rules over. :)

Mike A. says:

Per PeteAbe

UPDATE, 3:26 p.m.: Joba has a hamstring problem, the result of slipping off the mound in Chicago on Thursday night. He was not available yesterday. Joe Girardi said the injury doe not impact how he will be used. Whether that is true or not, I have no idea. It has become fairly evident in a short time that Girardi will play loose with the truth about injuries. He said that Bruney’s MRI showed no structural damage. Well, execept for the fractured ligament that will require surgery and keep him out for the season.

That worries me, I thought Joba looked like he lost something in that game, but I figured it was the second inning of work. Stupid fucking rain, stupid fucking grounds crew, the White Sox are worthless.

Jamal G. says:

You know with the week he missed on the bereavement list and the possibility of a per longed break due to the hamstring, the timetable on Joba’s transition might have to be moved up a bit. This is all just me thinking out loud but if he does go on the 15-day DL, we might see the process start maybe even a month earlier.

:) :) :) :)

BTW, what do you guys think the Yankees will do? Start him with three inning stints in the Majors then progressively increase the workload with a long man piggy backing his starts or stretch him out down on the farm?

Mike A. says:

I dunno, I’d rather they just sent him to minors to stretch him out. Let him get into a pregame warmup routine, and have some certainty as to when he’s pitching. I don’t like the idea of stretching him out in the bigs.

Jamal G. says:

So bunch of foul balls leads to a two out BB and then another display of bitchassness by the Tribe with that “hit”. I hate the Indians.

Glad to see Traber sent out, hopefully Hawkins is next.

E-ROC says:

Good play by Cano as Ensberg’s throw was hella high.

Ben K. says:

Gonzalez. Cano’s sitting today.

E-ROC says:

I meant Gonzalez. Flipping back and forth between the draft and the game.

Jamal G. says:

So 11 picks in the NFL draft and just two are offensive players. Of those two players, one is a skill position (Matt Ryan-ATL, QB). Defense does win championships.

E-ROC says:

And a QB that can make plays wins championships.

Jamal G. says:

Unstoppable. Eli Manning is.

Jamal G. says:

Brian Burress owned the White Sox today, guess our offense wasn’t bad after all. :)

Ben K. says:

Er, did someone just miss a sign there?

Jamal G. says:

I love the call, force things to happen and making Jose Molina attempt to put the ball in play since he’s beens scuffling a bit coming back from hamstring injury.

Mike A. says:

Hit and runs are a great way to get guys out of a slump. Get them to stop thinking and just focus on getting the bat on the ball.

Jamal G. says:

Seeing that play by Derek Jeter, did anyone see that play by Rafael Furcal last night? He ranged to the grass behind the Third Basemen and fired throwing out Troy Tulowitzki at 1B. Nasty.

Jamal G. says:

Tim McCarver sounded like he was about to climax when he said “…And once again the American league is being dominated by the Red Sox…”.

Jamal G. says:

This isn’t right, both BBs have been after elongated ABs that included foul ball after foul ball.

Jamal G. says:

Hey, if Jair Jurrjens can rebound after that meltdown last night so can our own Ian Patrick Kennedy. Come on man, get it together.

Mike A. says:

Word, Jair fell off a cliff last night, but rebounded very well.

Jamal G. says:

LoL, he fell off a cliff and into the pits of Hell before he got back on track last night.

Jamal G. says:

And you Tim McCarver are both a tool and an idiot.
