Joe and Ben are both at the game today, so I’m your host for the afternoon. They’ll get to see the triumphant return of Darrell Rasner, one of the more underappreciated arms in the organization. He’s not flashy and he doesn’t have the overpowering stuff, but he throws strikes and keeps the ball in the park, which is more than say, Bronson Arroyo is doing these days.

Rasner will face perennial punching bag Carlos Silva as the Yanks shoot for their first sweep of a three game series this year. Hopefully facing Silva allows them to keep distancing themselves from that frustrating “score some runs early then go into hibernation” routine.

To make room for Rasner, Brian Bruney was shifted to the 60-day DL (to clear a 40-man spot) and IPK was demoted to Triple-A Scranton (to clear a 25-man spot). IPK’s elgible to be called back up on May 14th, four days after the next time the Yanks will need a fifth starter. So unless someone gets injured between now and then, it’ll probably be Kei Igawa or Steven White on the 10th in Detroit. The Yanks’ patience lasts only 6 games, I see.

Can you hear all the Dodgers’ fans crying bloody murder over Chad Billingsley’s poor start? I sure can’t.

The lineup:

The team’s leader in slugging percentage, LF
Jessica Alba’s baby daddy, SS
The offensive MVP, RF
Godzilla, DH
Thank goodness there’s only 1 year left on his deal, 1B
The guy who kidnapped Melky Cabrera and is playing his place, CF
He won’t hit .150-.213-.230 all year, right?, 2B
The guy that’s hit exactly 36 HR since hitting 36 HR in 2005, 3B
Chad “is this what we’ve come to” Moeller, C

Notes: Looks like Latrell Spreewell needed that money to feed his family after all.

You sure are having fun with this Mike aren’t you? :)

Joey says:

oh please, in MLB 08 the show I struck out Ichiro 3x’s in a game, so for Rasner this should be nothing! (on a side note the Yanks traded IPK for Omar Vizquel… wtf?)

Joey says:

in the game that is, I’ll try not to cause mass hysteria

Mike A. says:

In my franchise the Cards traded Pujols and Carpenter for Sean Casey and Tim Wakefield.

Aaron says:

MLB 2k7. Damon for Ankiel. Now, that’s improvement.

dan says:

What happened to the DotF last night?

Mike A. says:

I had a long and blurry night. DotF will be up later today.

dan says:

haha no problem… I just went straight to the box scores last night, but I was missing the commentary to go with it :(

Jamal G. says:

Link says:

how dare Rasner wear Jeff Johnson’s number?

Steve S says:

And whats weird is he looks just like Scott Kaminecki. Perhaps after the fans boo, he can switch to Wade Taylor’s former number or Domingo Jean’s I can forgive him.

A.D. says:

Or the great scott proctor’s number

Jamal G. says:

Darrel Rasner works fast, I like.

BTW Mike, can you give us a little scouting report on Rasner?

dan says:

haven’t you seen enough of him the last 2 years?

Link says:

I love how I pay $159 (well $80 - I work for Comcast) and don’t get to see the game yesterday….damn Beltre killed it.

eli says:

Love that it seems that Jeter is finding his stroke. That will go a long way to getting the offense on track and get some runners on for Abreu to knock in.

eli says:

whats the story regarding the discrepencies surrounding ipk getting sent down? I remember reading that they were probably going to send him down because they didn’t need a 5th starter for awhile. Now I see this:
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....id=3380856

Makes it sound like Kennedy didn’t expect it and that it was more of a demotion then a chance to work things out while yanks have break in the schedule.
Any insight?

Mike R. says:

The difference is in the outlet reporting the news.

eli says:

What about the Kennedy qoute? He at the least doesnt sound like anyone really explained to him what was going on.

Mike R. says:

I don’t want to sound like a conspiracy theorist here, but quotes can easily be manipulated.

eli says:

thats true. im sure a lot more will come out in the coming weeks about this. have to see what comes of it

Jamal G. says:

That story was per the Associated Press, not ESPN.

Mike R. says:

2 IP, 18 pitches and that’s giving up 2 runs. This game should be over by 2:30. :|

Jamal G. says:

MELKY CABRERA, All-Star CF FTW!

iYankees says:

Melky is the man. He can definitely be an AS this year.

eli says:

I feel that. Imagine if he can keep up with these power numbers and keep the average up. Damn! If only he can rub off some of his enthusiasm on Robbie…ha he jsut nailed that while I was writing this!

eli says:

Abreu Robbie and Melky wilding in the dugout! RAB needs a spanish lipreader for some real inside info on the yankee love

Jamal G. says:

No hating on Melky but Ben and Joe are at the game so it works just as well, LoL.

Mike R. says:

THAT’S why we didn’t trade for Santana! Keep the Melk in NY!

Jamal G. says:

You know what sucks about that half-inning, if anything, Jason Giambi had a great fucking AB by smashing a ball to LF but went mainly unrewarded due to a beautiful catch by Raul Ibanez.

It is encouraging though, let’s see if Giambi and Robinson Cano can build off of their respective ABs this past half-inning.

Mike R. says:

Today’s trivia:

Total number of games where Hughes and Kennedy received run support of 6+?

1

Realist says:

Kennedy 0 2 8.37
Hughes 0 4 9.00

6 or 7 runs still wouldn’t have helped them in most cases…..

Mike R. says:

Your argument has so many holes I don’t know where to begin.

1- ERA isn’t a measure of the amount of runs they gave up per game.
2- The final scores in the games Hughes started were:
3-2 W, 2-5 L,5-8 L, 2-8 L, 6-7 L, 4-6 L

3- The final scores in the games Kennedy started were:
4-13 W, 0-4 L, 8-7 W, 0-6 L, 3-4 L, 4-8 L

4-Leads change bullpen management

In essence at the very least if Kennedy and Hughes received 6 + runs in run support it would have changed the result of 4 or 5 games.

Realist says:

Lol, ERA is an average over 9 innings…

9 innings!

Neither has made it out of 6 in a game , which makes your argument even less worthy.

I am a huge supporter of both but also being REALISTIC , I see how NY NOT scoring over 6 runs in their starts has nothing to do with their respective troubles.

Realist says:

You are also showing games where they weren’t able to collect the win as they didn’t reach the minimum innings pitched.

Talk about holes?

pettitte's stare says:

the reason run support helps is because all of sudden there is less pressure. You can pitch more how you want and not worry that a single pitch can change the outcome of the game. Staking any pitcher to a 3+ run advantage automatically reduces their stress and lets them pitch a different game. This would be especially important for young starters who have already had unbelievable pressure placed on them.

Realist says:

You can’t expect to take the mound with a 3 run lead every time….in fact they both had that and failed to hold it on more than one occassion.

It can be argued all day but the truth is neither one pitched well enough to stay in the majors…if some of you want to blame the offense for not scoring an average of 10 runs a game , then have at it….it is an excuse not reality.

I want them both to succeede but neither helped their cause and to blame the offense is a cop out. Anyone who has watched baseball more than 10 years can attest to that.

(Comments wont nest below this level)
mustang says:

Totally agree, but your fighting an upside fight when it comes Hughes and Kennedy here.

Realist says:

Yep, it would seem so………….

Moose is DONE and is a better pitcher than both of them….sad!

Jamal G. says:

Jose Tabata is 1-for-1 thus far after going 2-for-4 with a RBI yesterday. BTW, Anthony Clagget, the forgotten prospect in the Gary Sheffield deal, was promoted to Trenton late this week and K’ed two in his first and only inning and of work thus far as a Trenton Thunder.

Jamal G. says:

Also stole a base. It’s sad that people were actually either stupid enough or short-sighted enough to write the kid off after a bad couple moments. Now I’m not saying he’s cemented his status as a guaranteed future star but to have written him off was just dumb.

Realist says:

Sometimes we all need a fire lit under our asses…………maybe this is what he needed? I sure hope so as he seems to have all the physical attributes needed to succede(sp?).

Jamal G. says:

Very true. More good news, this time on the defensive side ,he was part of a 9-6-3 DP that doubled off the runner at 1B.

Realist says:

“Baseball is 90 percent mental. The other half is physical.”

Some logic from the great Yogi….and so correct ;-)

Realist says:

Melkey has been on fire so far this year! I have always liked him but felt his ceiling(sp?) was low………….glad I was wrong so far :-)

pete says:

cano is still popping up to shallow left and center wayy too much though
just to be a negative nancy

dan says:

Melky has more home runs than Travis Hafner and Carlos Beltran combined.

Jamal G. says:

Johnny Damon’s range FTW!

Number 27 says:

haha what are the rules on adding rasner to the ‘big three’. in all serious though, nice game by rasner today.

Chucky says:
Realist says:

Joe says:

I’m just Gameday-ing this one, but why pull Rasner at 76 pitches when he’s absolutely cruising? It’s not like the ‘pen has been overworked lately, or anything…

Mike P says:

Can someone explain why Ohlendorf is in the game?? To get work? Makes no sense to me Rasner could of gone 8 at this rate.

dan says:

I was just talking about that…. he threw 76 pitches over 6, why can’t he go one more? Girardi can’t complain about overusing the bullpen if he’s only gonna let his starters go 76 pitches (and Mussina 84 in his last start)

Mike A. says:

Clueless Joe strikes again.

steve (different one) says:

this is just silly.

sometimes you just want your pitcher to end on a high note.

i know we try to be super-analytical on this site, myself as much as anyone, but there is a “feel” aspect to the game as well, even if it can’t be quantified.

there is an off-day tomorrow. Ohlendorf hadn’t pitched since the first Detroit game. if he doesn’t pitch today, he has 6 off-days.

they have about 9 relievers up.

this is hardly worth calling Girardi “clueless’.

Realist says:

Lol, kids say the darndest things!

Joey says:

damn, just got back from lunch and they pulled Rasner after (what looks to be from the box score) a really good game. I wanted to see him pitch

Joe says:

I figure they don’t want to push what Rasner accomplished today. If he comes back out and struggles, gives up a few runs, I think you lose a little bit of the moral victory of having a young pitcher do well.

Realist says:

http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com.....p;c_id=nyy

Kennedy to AAA

It was spoke of earlier in this and another thread…official now , I guess?

Jamal G. says:

I agree with the move to go to the bullpen. You have nine relievers on the squad, you need to get these guys regular work unless they suffer Edwar syndrome where they don’t pitch for three weeks and get sent out there to get shelled.

Jamal G. says:

Lmao, Melky is hilarious. He just pops up in the post-game with DJ and Jim Jones and starts grinning like an ass, too funny.

Realist says:

The first of many more sweeps , this year…………..I hope!

Nice work Ras!

Jamal G. says:

Second sweep, we swept the two-game set in Tampa in April.

But of course I know what you mean, LoL.

Realist says:

DOH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the correction!
