I honestly don’t have a ton to say. Same as las night: Hit ball, win game. Pettitte vs. Santana. Yeah. Wooo!

Oh, and via PeteAbe, there’s a chance Joba stays in the bullpen. Yeah. Because the starting pitching has been soooo good.

Lineup:

1. Johnny Damon, LF
2. Bobby Abreu, RF
3. Derek Jeter, SS
4. Hideki Matsui, DH
5. Jason Giambi, 1B
6. Robinson Cano, 2B
7. Melky Cabrera, CF
8. Alberto Gonzalez, 3B
9. Chad Moeller, C

are you sure robbie and chad are both catching?

Jamal G. says:

Hey take a look at this MLB.com article for a good laugh. It’s about the 10-year anniversary of Seinfeld’s series finale (can’t believe it’s been that long, to think I was 9 and couldn’t care less for the show) and it’s multiple references to New York baseball. Very funny stuff.

TurnTwo says:

I’m psyched about the matchup, but unfortunately i’m not as confident in Andy right now as i’d like to be.

one thing you can feel okay about is that the mets offense stinks about as much as the yankees offense does right now… so while you expect a low scoring, say like 3-2 kind of game, i’m sure it’ll be a 12-10 blowout.

A.D. says:

Yeah, I get the skipping Rasner, but lately Rasner has been pitching better than Pettite, extra day of rest may not have been the worst, but I guess they want Wang to throw against the Mets

YES says:

I don’t think Joba’s staying in the pen. That really complicates things for next year.
Not sure why Girardi would say something like that then Cashman is completely silent about it.
Joba to the rotation was never depended on whether their is a need in the rotation. All along he was going to be a starter.
Eventually there likely won’t be a need for him considering there is a plethora of options on the farm.
Add to that Pettitte and Mussina will likely be gone after this year opening 2 spots in the rotation.
I think Girardi just threw that out there for some reason.

Jamal G. says:

Anybody watching the game on SNY? Ron Darling and Gary Cohen are damn good.

As to the Joba thing, I think Joe Girardi is just not laying the cards out on the table. He just says vein things and won’t let the media know what’s going on which I feel is a great thing.

Mike R. says:

I agree. I think the booth is doing a very good job.

Joseph M says:

I hate to say this but the Yankees really need to overhaul the broadcast booth on both the TV and radio side after this season. Th Mets put the Yankees to shame in this area. The Yankee radio sdie is a joke, the TV side has way to many voices and they need a much stronger play by play lead.

Jamal G. says:

Outside of Paul O’Neill I love all the YES’ game analysts. I’m not as hard on Michael Kay as some because although he is an arrogant, condescending douche more often than not, he is tolerable to me. I know I am in the extreme minority on that though.

YES needs to just improve their network programs, if it’s not pre/post games then they really have nothing to offer.

A.D. says:

Well this is how the TB game started…

Jamal G. says:

Since when did Johan Santana lose that much on his Fastball? Throwing 89-90, I knew he wasn’t 93-95 anymore but I thought he was 91-93. Odd, but I definitely want to keep an eye on this, could mean a lot for his Fastball/Changeup speed differential.

Jamal G. says:

Hr #9 by Mr. Santana, Owned.

Joey says:

Can count on the Cap’n to set the tone for the rest of the game! Hopefully for the rest of the season. I’m sure Andy’s happy he has some run support (although 2 runs has been our number right now)

Jamal G. says:

23 pitches and two runs in the 1st inning, couldn’t have asked for much more off o Johan Santana.

YES says:

Jamal, Santana velocity dropped last year according a lot scouts. With an upper eighties to low nineties FB it takes a lot out of the change up.

Jamal G. says:

Thanks, it should explain the HR counts last season and this season thus far.

Mike P says:

Still should have traded hughes melky kennedy tabata jackson and brackman for him. You can’t win with kids!

Joey says:

don’t forget the Wanger — Santana don’t come cheap ya know!

Jamal G. says:

If anyone is watching the SNY telecast, was that PeteAbe in the sunglasses?

RichYF says:

Hi, I’m Andy Pettitte and I’m a strikeout pitcher.

Mike P says:

What did you do with Johan Santana?

Mike R. says:

My name is Andy Pettitte and I am a Pick Off Artist.

- Hi Andy!!!

mustang says:

Happy so far. I need wins the next two days or work will be hell.

Jamal G. says:

Chad Moeller doing his best Tim Battle impersonation there. Johan Santana’s strike-ball ratio is at a paltry 19:18.

whozat says:

That’s why he’s a third-string catcher :-)

batty says:

If Sterling says ___ has ‘power’ one more time I’m throwing the radio out the window.

mustang says:

Wow..Reyes .256 so much for him being better then Jeter.

Jamal G. says:

One thing that’s a bit odd, Jose Reyes is statistically the worst defensive SS in the NL via ESPN’s Zone Rating and Range Factor.

CB says:

Zone rating is still a relatively new statistic and the way it’s calculated can vary quite a lot depending on the methodology. The methodology that can have a large impact on what the statistic says.

From my understanding, the best methods to calculate zone ratings come from Baseball Info Solutions. That’s the source that the Hard Ball Times uses for its statistics.

By the Hardball Times Reyes has the 6th best ZR in the NL. There are regularly very big discrepancies between ESPN’s zone ratings and the ones from the Hardball Times.

mustang says:

Jamal G.
I may know the old stuff, but you have the internet Stat. stuff down.
Where do you come up with this stuff ?

Joey says:

Andy is dandy (lets see his 4th inning and on this game though)

Mike R. says:

Bad send by Meachum. There are no outs there and we are struggling to score runs.

whozat says:

Took a perfect play to get him. Yeah, we’re struggling to score runs, so sometimes you need to be aggressive.

Joey says:

Via Pete Abe:

“UPDATE, 1:59 p.m.: It looked on the replay that Damon was safe. Given how the Yankees are struggling to score (and they’re up 2-0), that’s a good send by Bobby Meacham.”

He disagrees with you for the same reason

Mike R. says:

I disagree because there are no outs. That would give us two chances to bring him in with a sac fly or a well placed groundout. The replay I saw had Schneider clearly blocking the plate.

Mike R. says:

Andy is getting squeezed big time. I hope he can work passed that.

Joey says:

looks like a good call by ump

Jamal G. says:

I was surprised he sent him but I can’t call that a bad send, perfect plays by Ryan Church, Luis Castillo and Brian Schenider was the reason for the out. As a 3B coach if you feel the only way your guy is out is if you get a perfect cutoff and throw to the cutoff man by the OF, a perfect relay throw and a perfect block at the plate you send your guy.

mustang says:

What the fuck is wrong with him in the 4th inning ?

Jamal G. says:

Ron Darling made a good point, he thinks he is not changing up his patterns the second time through the order and he doesn’t have the stuff to pitch the same way multiple times through the order. That makes a lot of sense but I am not sure if he is in fact doing this so I can’t say that is the reason.

mustang says:

Good point by Darling.
I don’t know it’s not like they hit the shit out of the ball.

mustang says:

Jamal G. says:

Not for nothing but with Johan Santana’s lack of control today this long layoff should not bode well for him.

Joey says:

wow that was a gift call (Thanks!)

Yankee1010 says:

Bobby Meacham. Some sort of spectacular f-in disaster. I got an idea, let’s get someone who can’t run the bases and have him coach 3rd. Awesome.

Jamal G. says:

You’re acting like he was out by two feet. It took three perfect phases of defense by the Mets and it was still bang-bang.

Yankee1010 says:

Jamal, there were 0 outs and the middle of the lineup coming up. They had 2 chances to score him with an out. Instead, they made that out at the plate. That was much better.

Jamal G. says:

This offense has been a struggling mess this past week, I don’t blame him for sending him, he had a great chance of scoring there.

Yankee1010 says:

And he didn’t score. It’s not like I’m second guessing over here. As soon as the ball left Church’s hand and Damon hadn’t touched 3rd, I was ready to wring Meachem’s neck. It was bad baseball.

batty says:

Joey says:

Kay: “You could see Joe Girardi wear his emotions on his sleeve”

Really? Compared to a rock, maybe…

barry says:

for now on we’ll put Andy in left field for the 4th, bring in a reliever, then put him out again for the 5th and on.

Jamal G. says:

Two bloop singles and an infield single, not really on him. He did have a couple walks but the majority of the damage came on some cheap hits.

mustang says:

mustang says:

Cheap ass fucking bull shit rally.
Aaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!

Yankee1010 says:

If Meachem thinks that he has to send Damon there “to jumpstart the offense” with 0 outs, the middle of the lineup coming up and Santana looking shaky, well, I hope to Hell he gets sent to AA to coach 3rd similar to the old days. He’s been awful there this season.

mvg says:

Well, i seem to recall earlier this week jeter getting a leadoff triple and not scoring. so yeah, he was trying to jumpstart it. I can’t disagree with meachum sending him, considering how anemic they’ve been with runners on

Yankee1010 says:

You seem to recall incorrectly. There was one out when Jeter tripled.

mvg says:

Ok, then i was incorrect. you could be less of a dick about it though

Joey says:

holy shit thats the type of half inning that I have to describe to my doctor when he asks why my blood pressure is through the roof

mustang says:

That’s funny.
Me too.
LOL

Mike R. says:

Giambi is having the shitiest luck ever.

Joey says:

he finally doesn’t pull the ball to the shift, and WTF? You’re right, shitty luck there

Mike R. says:

Six pitches! SIX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Aaaaaarrrgh!!!!!!!!

Mike R. says:

Alou would have been hit by an intentional ball there. He was all over the plate and made minimal to no effort to get out of the way.

stealing 3rd? what the hell…

mustang says:

Now someone please tell me why the fuck couldn’t he do this the 4th inning ?

Jamal G. says:

He was a bit unlucky that 4th inning.
