River Ave BluesIt’s cloudy and cool in New York. While this afternoon’s rain storms have let up for a bit, showers are supposed to return this evening, but the House that Ruth Built will host a baseball game tonight as the New York teams wrap up round two of the six-round Subway Series. (Shameless plug alert.)
For the Yankees, today is thankfully the last day of the A-Rod Disabled List stint. If his value to the team isn’t apparent after this terrible stretch of baseball, then you haven’t been paying much attention. Right now, I’d have to believe that Morgan Ensberg may be witnessing his last game in a Yankee uniform. His stint in New York was a good idea; it just hasn’t panned out, and Alberto Gonzalez is a much better fit for this team going forward than Ensberg is.
The Yanks, oh so terrible against lefties, face yet another southpaw tonight as Oliver Perez takes the mound of the Mets. As a team, the Yanks have never really hit Perez, and on the season, they are hitting .232/.303/.333 against lefties. As Ed Price relates, the Yanks are 1-6 vs. lefty starters since A-Rod hit the DL. Chien-Ming Wang better bring his A game to the Bronx tonight.
Game time is 8:05, and we’re stuck with the All Star broadcasting team of Joe Morgan and Jon Miller.

Game Notes: A-Rod went 5 for 15 in an extended spring training game today. One of those hits was a grand slam, and for some reason, I’m reminded of one of the best Bugs Bunny cartoons.
How do you hit a grand slam in a game with no fielders and no other runners?

I certainly hope they DFA Ensberg, it was an attept, he’ll get is million bucks for not doing anything, and they can move on. Ensberg isn’t hitting, isn’t hitting lefties, and doesn’t really have any range…so no redeeming value.

little known fact: Joe Morgan used a trapping net instead of a glove from 1973 to 1977. After winning 5 gold gloves in that span, MLB ruled that the use of a trapping net on the field of play was illegal. (Rule 709.1.F)

CMW has delivered 26 pitches through three frames as Oliver Perez has thrown 37 pitches through two frames. I know Robinson Cano is aggressive but he can’t be swinging at the first pitch after a lead-off BB to Jason Giambi.
Agreed. I saw the same thing. After that walk, Cano has to take a strike. I know he’s been tearing it up lately, but he needs to show some more patience.

Jason Giambi and Bobby Abreu have been hitting. Shelley Duncan and Morgan Ensberg have been putrid at the plate. Alberto Gonzalez gives you better speed and defense along with some versatility at the bottom of the order with the ability to bunt. I agree with those two not starting, RH or not, they just aren’t hitting.

“Just talked to Jorge Posada. He caught Ian Kennedy in the bullpen today, the first time he has done that since going on the DL. He said his sore shoulder is feeling better. He’s also into a throwing program. Today he made 20 throws from 75 feet and 20 more from 90 feet.
He hopes to start a rehab assignment a week from tomorrow or a week from Tuesday, somewhere in that time frame.
Posada is a real no-excuses, bottom-line kind of guy. I asked him about the team needing him back and he said that they should be scoring runs even with he and A-Rod out. “We still have a good lineup,” he said.”
