Hey-Zeus goes hitless; the apocalyse is imminent

Chad Jennings notes the Yanks signed former uber-catching prospect JD Closser to a minor league deal to add some depth at Triple-A. No such thing as a bad minor league deal.

Triple-A Scranton was rained out, they’ll play two tomorrow. Wilson Betemit was supposed to play third and bat leadoff for the first five innings, while Brett Gardner was slotted into the THIRD spot in the order. I can’t imagine Gardner’s gotten more than a handful of at-bats in that spot in his life.

Low-A Charleston (6-3 loss to Augusta)
Abe Almonte: 1 for 5, 2 K
Carmen Angelini: 2 for 5, 1 R, 2 K – back after sitting out a few games after taking an Abe Almonte throw to the back of the head … he’s now 12 for his last 30

Melancon’s been putting up some solid numbers lately. Any word on how he looks with command, velocity, stamina, etc. from a scouting perspective?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Last I heard he was at 90-91, so it’s not all the way back to it’s normal 93-94, and he was still getting a feel for the curve. Stamina seems fine, but we won’t know that for sure until the end of the season.

      • Brandon

there was an article I read that said he was hitting 93 mph this month, it should be interesting Melancon was stretched out tonight meaning AA Trenton is not that far away since Robertson was promoted tonight to AAA.

      • Ed

Any word on Sanchez, Whelan, Heredia, Horne, Romine, and Garcia?

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Just starting throwing from a mound & should see game action within the month, no, no, not throwing yet but will soon, no and no.

  • Mike R.

Could Timm Battle be this year’s A-Jax? Here’s to hoping.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

No, Battle would need to stop swinging at anything within 2 feet of the plate first.

        So funny, so wrong…so true.

  • A.D.

Melancon & Robertson solid outings, can’t wait for them in the bigs.

    Hilligoss heating up a bit…

  • dan

Hey look it’s Ryan Zink… forgot all about him

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Yeah seriously. I wonder what Nick Chigges and Jason Kiley are up to these days.

      • dan

Chigges was good last year…. you don’t have any idea what happened to him? Teams don’t usually release guys with almost 3/1 K/BB ratios. Maybe he’s hurt and we just didn’t hear about it…. MiLB.com says he’s on Staten Island, but I can’t imagine they’re sending him there again after last year’s success.

        • Tripp

What about John Axford? He pitched for every level last year.

          • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Axford was released over the winter.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Could be hurt, could be in extended spring. He did go 31-5 in college, so it’s not like he’s some project that needs to have his mechanics overhauled.

Nights like these, DotF and its various brightpoints are all you got…
nice to see Angelini moved to #2

  • Tripp

Wonder if Melancon is going to AA soon?

    • Brandon
