Hey-Zeus goes hitless; the apocalyse is imminent

By

Chad Jennings notes the Yanks signed former uber-catching prospect JD Closser to a minor league deal to add some depth at Triple-A. No such thing as a bad minor league deal.

Triple-A Scranton was rained out, they’ll play two tomorrow. Wilson Betemit was supposed to play third and bat leadoff for the first five innings, while Brett Gardner was slotted into the THIRD spot in the order. I can’t imagine Gardner’s gotten more than a handful of at-bats in that spot in his life.

Double-A Trenton (5-4 loss to Connecticut)
Ramiro Pena: 0 for 3, 1 BB
Austin Jackson: 1 for 4, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 E (throwing) – threw a runner out at second from CF … 11 K in his last 8 games after 10 K in his first 20 games
Colin Curtis, Matt Carson, Cody Ehlers, Jose Tabata, PJ Pilittere: all 0 for 4, 1 K – Curtis scored a run … Tabata is back from his little sit-down, but is still 3 for his last 38 with 14 K
Chris Malec: 1 for 3, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 BB
Kevin Russo: 3 for 4, 1 RBI
Dan McCutchen: 7 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, 1 WP, 6-6 GB/FB – had allowed 5 ER in his previous 26.2 IP combined
David Robertson: 1 IP, zeroes, 1 K

High-A Tampa (5-2 in over Sarasota)
Damon Sublett: 1 for 4, 1 BB, 2 K
Eduardo Nunez: 1 for 5, 1 R, 1 2B
Mitch Hilligoss: 2 for 5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 K – 1 for 4 in 6 of his last 7 games
Edwar Gonzalez: 0 for 3, 1 R, 2 BB
Kyle Anson: 1 for 5, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 2 K – still sporting a 12-19 K/BB ratio
Tim Battle: 1 for 3, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Mike Dunn: 5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 3-8 GB/FB – quietly piecing together another solid year
Mark Melancon: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 3-3 GB/FB – good to see him getting stretched out a bit
Jon Hovis: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

Low-A Charleston (6-3 loss to Augusta)
Abe Almonte: 1 for 5, 2 K
Carmen Angelini: 2 for 5, 1 R, 2 K – back after sitting out a few games after taking an Abe Almonte throw to the back of the head … he’s now 12 for his last 30
Justin Snyder: 2 for 3, 1 R, 1 RBI
Jesus Montero, Brandon Laird & Taylor Holiday: all 0 for 4 – Montero K’ed once & took his first 0-fer in nearly 2 weeks
David Williams: 1 for 3 – threw a runner out at 3B from RF
Lance Pendleton: 3 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 WP
Jesse Hoover: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HB, 3-0 GB/FB – allowed 1 ER in 3 straight outings after allowing 1 ER total during his first 5 outings
Jason Stephens: 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 2 WP, 3-2 GB/FB

  1. Ben K. says:

Melancon’s been putting up some solid numbers lately. Any word on how he looks with command, velocity, stamina, etc. from a scouting perspective?

    • Mike A. says:

Last I heard he was at 90-91, so it’s not all the way back to it’s normal 93-94, and he was still getting a feel for the curve. Stamina seems fine, but we won’t know that for sure until the end of the season.

      • Brandon says:

there was an article I read that said he was hitting 93 mph this month, it should be interesting Melancon was stretched out tonight meaning AA Trenton is not that far away since Robertson was promoted tonight to AAA.

      • Ed says:

Any word on Sanchez, Whelan, Heredia, Horne, Romine, and Garcia?

  2. Mike R. says:

Could Timm Battle be this year’s A-Jax? Here’s to hoping.

  3. A.D. says:

Melancon & Robertson solid outings, can’t wait for them in the bigs.

    Hilligoss heating up a bit…

  4. dan says:

Hey look it’s Ryan Zink… forgot all about him

    • Mike A. says:

Yeah seriously. I wonder what Nick Chigges and Jason Kiley are up to these days.

      • dan says:

Chigges was good last year…. you don’t have any idea what happened to him? Teams don’t usually release guys with almost 3/1 K/BB ratios. Maybe he’s hurt and we just didn’t hear about it…. MiLB.com says he’s on Staten Island, but I can’t imagine they’re sending him there again after last year’s success.
