Attitude doesn’t matter for the Yanks. There should always be one, and only one reason for drafting a guy late in the first or any other round……ceiling! Pitchers should be given edge over hitters. That’s it….simple. If a guy has some of the best stuff in the draft, take him! Hopefully he figures it out and matures. It’s what made Joba a great pick(injury questions), same for Brackman, same for Cole. David Wells had a bad attitude and he did ok.

Let’s not compare Cole to Dukes. Dukes had many issues off the field (multiple arrests, father in jail, drugs, etc.), which no doubt contributed to his erratic behavior and problems. Cole, as far as I can see, is a cocky, hotshot kid who can be somewhat of an asshole on the field. Not ideal, but far from criminal. Until I hear more specific reasons why makeup is a problem, I’m not too concerned either.

And Mike, I look forward to seeing your selections. What’s your take on Gillaspie? He sounds like another Brad Suttle type from the scouting reports, great pure hitter but not great power, which might not be too valuable to the Yankees (since 3rd is occupied for the next 500 years, and does he have the bat to be valuable at 1st?). Are you assuming that guys like Lawrie, Kelly and Collier will be gone by 28? I do think Scheppers would be a great pick whenever they can take him, especially if there is no structural damage to the shoulder. He sounds like he could be Joba 2.0.

All that immaturity and makeup stuff about Cole didn’t surface until after people found out he signed on with Boras. Go dig through BA’s archives, it’s the truth. Hell of a coincidence, I’d say.

I love this mock draft, Mike has had great success the past 2 years in picking who the Yankees would eventually draft and the other participants in this mock draft know their stuff too, so it ends up being very realistic.

But Mike, would you really want Gerrit Cole in the system? Jose Tabata’s maturity problems are causing enough worry amongst the organization, and I’ve heard Gerrit Cole’s makeup is just off the charts bad (as in ridiculously horrendously terrible). The pitching version of Elijah Dukes? Pass.

Taking a stab at the top five… I would like to see Cole drop into our laps. And give him time to grow while the other young arms become part of the big club in years to come, Brackman, Garcia, Sanchez, Horne, Heradia, McAllister, Betances, Pope etc…
