Congrats to the Fresno State Bulldogs, who took down Georgia 6-1 in the deciding Game 3 of the College World Series Finals. Fresno won 3 elimination games in a 4 day span, and became the lowest ranked team (89th in the RPI) to win an NCAA Championship in any sport. Steve Detwiler went 4 for 4 with 2 homers, a double and a 6 RBI in the finale, setting CWS records for RBIs and extra-base hits despite having a torn ligament in his hand that will require surgery as soon as he gets home. Justin Wilson did his part on the mound, firing 8 innings of 1 run, 9 strikeout ball on three days rest. I wrote him up as part of my draft coverage, so I feel vindicated (he was the Pirates’ 5th round pick).
Fresno coach Mike Batesole was just on BBTN, and they asked him which analyst is his favorite. His response: “I’ll go with my players and say Erin [Andrews].” Awesome. If there’s one I learned from this year’s CWS, it’s that I can’t fucking stand O.A.R.
