Game 64: Three out of four is always nice

2008 Draft Review

I can only wonder if we’d be going for a sweep right now if Friday night’s ump didn’t need lasik. Yeah, I know, it does no good to complain about what we cannot change, but in my mind, it’s still bases loaded and two outs with Cano coming to the plate.

Still, there are worse things than taking three out of four. Hell, we might be fighting for a split here if the offense didn’t go crazy on Saturday. So things are looking up, if only slightly.

And how ’bout Damon and Giambi? Plenty of people were counting them out during April, but they’ve been the catalysts of this offense for the past month or so. Though they’ll both certainly cool off at some point — especially Damon, who is now hitting far, far above his career averages — they’ve kept the team afloat when the rest of the pieces weren’t functioning optimally.

Our ace Mike Mussina (I say that only half-jokingly) takes the hill today. He missed Kansas City last time around.

Your lineup:

1. Johnny Damon, LF
2. Derek Jeter, SS
3. Bobby Abreu, RF
4. Alex Rodriguez, 3B
5. Hideki Matsui, DH
6. Jason Giambi, 1B
7. Robinson Cano, 2B
8. Jose Molina, C
9. Melky Cabrera, CF

And on the mound, number thirty-five, Mike Mussina

Posted this one on another one by accident:

Joba in the rotation just proves how stupid our management is. If they were to do this…it should have been done during spring training. I understand the other rookies have turned out…not only worse than expected…but worst case scenario by far…and we’re in panic mode in the last year in the original “House that Ruth Built”…but other teams used to come in knowing they only had 7 innings to score runs and try and win the game…which is a huge psychological advantage.
Now, not only do they know they have the 8th inning as well…they know they have an even BETTER chance in the 8th inning to score more runs with the likes of Hawkins or (even worse) Kyle Farnsworth in there pitching. This gives the other team a huge advantage. Joba used to electrify the crowd and strike fear in the hitters…now he’s starting games without much excitement (especially at the moment) and hitters are just either sitting on his control problems…or waiting for him to make a inevitable rookie mistake they can take out of the park. Why take something that was already great…because you have a FEELING that he could be equally as good as something else? That’s like taking Arod and gambling on him being good at another position…oh wait.
“Iron” Mike Mussina is on the mound tonight and on pace to win 20 games for the first time in his career. Well, up until the other starters start coming around…which will conveniently result in Mike Mussina coming back down to earth…beause heaven forbid if any of our starters all are good at the same time…that would just be crazy!
Robinson Cano is making too much money for his age…and we’re now seeing the effects of his new contract getting to his head. He hasn’t concentrated enough on his hitting like maybe he used to. Yes, he’s a second half player sicne he’s been here…but this is easily his worst start yet and I haven’t seen any signs of improvement. He’s had a few multi-hit games lately…but nothing that wow’s me and he just seems like he’s playing without any energy or excitement. Same goes for Melky. These two are the youngest position players on the team and I haven’t heard a peep from these guys…they look like they’re about to retire after this season.

To be honest I think it’s just been tough luck with coincidence and circumstance with the Yankees the past couple years. It’s very strange how it’s happened but it certainly has been. From Tony Clark’s double just barely grazing the wall for a very disappointing ground rule double that could have won the series, to Matsui and Sheffield breaking their wrists, to Hughes and Kennedy this year…it just seems like NOTHING has been going our way for quite some time. Yes, we’ve had the Aaron Small’s, Shawn Chacon’s, Shelley Duncan’s and Darrell Rasner’s come once in a while…but other teams are having these kind’s of things happen…without the other major inconveniences.

The one time we don’t play the Angels in the first round of the playoffs, they’re all injury battered and beaten up. Just the way it’s been happening.

Is it the curse has been reversed? Did the Babe catch wind that there was going to be a new Yankee Stadium and change his mind about showing up in the playoffs for us?

Sounds far fetched…but so isn’t eveything that’s been going on around us.

    • keith

Is this some sort of joke?

    • Joey

wow thats a long freakin post, and since I have a “case of the mondays” I kinda zoned in and out reading it, but to dispute a few claims:

      a. Joba has an innings limit, to save his arm for the future, which is why he started in the pen
      b. There is no evidence that Robbie’s contract is why he is doing so bad, he started off slowly last season, and as many have claimed, Bowa was always pushing him last season and he’s not here anymore. He’ll get it together
      c. I don’t know if Hawkins is any better than Farnsworthless, but you forgot to mention Edwar and Veras who as establishing they can be trusted with the 8th
      d. Melky was very hot in the beginning of the season, which you forgot, and has cooled off drastically since, but has still played solid defense (minus that botched line drive off his glove)

eh, I’m tired of writing, thats it for now

    • Badhay

This post shouldn’t even be responded to b/c it’s so idiotic, however I will entertain it. The reason why Joba didn’t start the season in the rotation is quite clear to anyone who has a quarter of a brain: HE HAS AN INNINGS LIMIT!!! By starting the season in the rotation he would have to be shut down by September and wouldn’t be able to be used in the playoffs – it’s not rocket science, how do you not understand this? Your best pitchers should be pitching the most innings, period. What good is having Joba in the 8th inning if the starters can’t even get him the ball with a lead? With the way the rotation has been pitching, he’d be getting the ball maybe 2-3 times a week with a lead, as opposed to getting 2 starts a week where he can pitch 6-7 innings instead of 1. Also, don’t you recall how Joba came up last year? What makes you think Melancon, Robertson, Cox, etc. won’t be able to succeed in the setup role this year? Farnsworth and Hawkins are not going to be pitching late in games come late July-August.

    • LiveFromNewYork

      too stupid to reply to

  • Axl

    Another NOTE:

I wouldn’t have branded Damon as the one who would “especially” slow down because of his career averages…before Giambi?? Let’s not all forget Jorge Posada in 2007. If he can do it…I would expect Johnny Damon to do so…maybe not so much Giambi though…because he’s more of an on-base, power home run hitter, and is also slowed down by the shift (even though it doesn’t ever seem to slow down Big Juicy (David Ortiz).
Although I agree they will both be slowing down at some point…I would say Giambi would be the first to be less consistent…especially since I have him on my fantasy team…and I have the worst luck in the world. If only for that reason alone.

    – Axl

    • TurnTwo

wow, i see what you did there… instead of ‘Big Papi’ you called him ‘Big Juicy’… right, because of your assumption that David Ortiz is on steroids.

very clever, didnt see that before.

  • A.D.

who would have thought that going to the West coast after this game would allow for lower temperatures?

  • http://mike@riveraveblues.com Mike A.

    Just win.

    • A.D.

Pretty much, 3/4 is a step in the right direction, 2/4 is continuing to tread water, Yanks have to start winning series

  • A.D.

Big spike for Damon vs career numbers is the slugging, right now about 80 pts above his career avg.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Michael Strahan is retiring. God Dammit. This may be a baseball blog but Michael Strahan is one of the best players to ever grace a NY uniform.

    http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/8225886/Coming-off-Super-Bowl-win,-Strahan-to-retire

    • http://mike@riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Going out on top, hard to blame him. No doubt HOFer in my opinion.

      I’ll miss the gap.

      • E-ROC

LOL, i’ll miss the gap too.

    • Badhay

Couldn’t agree more Jamal. Easily the best overall D-End of the last decade and a half. At least he got that ring though, it’s hard to envision a championship as sweet as this past Super Bowl

      • LiveFromNewYork

will miss him a lot. No one loved winning the SB as much as he did…and no one deserved it more. We will miss you guy.

  • Joey

Holy shit, we gotta lock this guy up long term. I’m thinkin like 7 yrs $140 mill or somethin around there! lol

  • http://www.myspace.com/lincolnsworld Link

Good afternoon everyone…nice start to the game so far.

  • Joey

Running hard the whole way. Love it.

  • E-ROC

A steal? what is going on?

  • Chris

I think the Yankees should pick up Giambi’s option for next year. I know everyone is fixated on Teixeira, but if the Yanks miss out on him, I don’t think there would be any better options than Giambi. If you can wait to pick up Giambi’s option until after finding out whether you can get Teixeira or not, that would be ideal, but I don’t know that having both around would be a problem.

If you look at the 7 years of Giambi’s contract, he’s had an OPS >900 in 5 of those years, and the other two years he missed half the year with injuries, so this year isn’t just a fluke year. It’s basically the same production he’s given us each year as a Yankee.

    • A.D.

They can resign him, but paying him 23M that the option entails would probably be a mistake…it seems like he’d more be worth the contract Frank Thomas signed with the Blue Jays

      • A.D.

        Check that 22M

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

There’s no way the Yanks are going to pick up a $20 million option for a player of Giambi’s age. I also think it’s way too early to determine whether or not the Yanks should bring Giambi back. They don’t have to make that decision until November, and there’s no reason to force the issue beforehand.

    • http://mike@riveraveblues.com Mike A.

No way, that’s a $22M option. They could buy him out for $5M, then resign him to a 1-yr deal, say $10M or so, and save a bunch of money. Giambi’s crushing the ball right now, but a $22M a year player he is not.

      • Chris

What is a $22M player? Currently, Giambi is 12th in the majors in OPS, so maybe that doesn’t deserve $22M, but certainly more than $10M would be reasonable.

Also, if he got out on the free agent market, he could probably get a 2 or 3 year deal (similar to Frank Thomas). If you buy him out in order to resign him, you risk either losing him or needing to lock him up for more than one year to keep him. All that risk to save $7M, or slightly more than we’re paying Farnsworth to blow the game in the 8th inning. One of the key advantages of picking up his option is that you guarantee what you’ll need to pay him, and guarantee that it will only be for one year.

Yes, he’s crushing the ball right now, but that’s not very different from what he’s done during his entire contract (except for the two years he was injured), so I don’t think it’s fair to assume this is a fluke. The expectations for him should be .250/.400/.500 with 30HR and 100RBI. That kind of production is not easy to replace.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

Was that seriously a called third strike?

    • Joey

did he call a third strike or say he swung? I’m half paying attention to the game and half listening to the teacher (I hate microecon)

  • Joey

    Again with this shit?

  • Dan W

A couple of posts ago I commented on Jeter bunting in the first inning with a runner on 2nd.

He did not bunt today, instead poped it up. If he bunts him over, he may have scored on the Abreu fly ball.

I see why people don’t like it in the first inning, but I think it is a good play since you are almost certain to score a run with a runner on 3rd and 1 out. IMO

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

He had a bad swing at a 3-1 pitch. I don’t know if I’d advocate bunting there, but he’s gotta put a better AB together than that.

  • E-ROC

    T-Clip got called up today.

    • http://mike@riveraveblues.com Mike A.

      Ha!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Moose has some better velocity today, consistently at 87-88MPH and has some serious break on his Two-Seamer. Does he even throw a Four-Seamer anymore?

  • Joey

uh oh, old man got hit in the mouth it looks like

    • http://mike@riveraveblues.com Mike A.

What happened? I’m at work, so I’m stuck gamecastin’ it today.

      Thanks.

      • E-ROC

Gameday has a clip of Molina’s bat flying.

      • Joey

Molina’s bat flew outta his hands and hit an older man in the crowd who appears to be fine. no big deal

        • http://mike@riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Ah ok. Thanks guys. I got worried and thought Moose took a comebacker or something.

          • Joey

lol sorry, didn’t realize “old man” = Moose when I first typed it. Hope I didn’t cause mass panic or anything

  • Sal

A response and defense for Cano: The kid, going into today’s game, is batting .297 since May 1. We would take that from anybody but because it’s Cano we expect .320-.330 that goes to show you how great he is.

  • E-ROC

It’s just weird seeing Mussina strike batters out.

  • Alan

Did anybody else catch Joel Sherman’s latest “piece” http://blogs.nypost.com/sports/st/archives/2008/06/five_yankee_tra.html

Sometimes I wonder how these guys get work.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

That is example number one as to why we have our tabloid ban. Worst piece ever.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

I was just flabbergasted that he advocated involving Jose Tabata in a deal for Jonathan Sanchez and Randy fucking Winn.

        • E-ROC

LOL, Joe Morgan said Angel Berroa has a good track record yesterday.

          • Alan

            Sure, back in 2003.

        • Alan

I was flabbergasted by the entire thing. The fact that he actually thinks these are legitimate trades astonishes me. Maybe he’s a Red Sox plant and we just don’t know it yet.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Yeah, I posted it at NoMass. I find those guys hilarious when they are raking on mediots.

    • E-ROC

Joel Sherman was really serious about that piece, lol. That three team trade is the funniest of all.

    • Joey

It’s so stupid its not even funny…

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

It really is, that is the perfect statement. It really is so stupid that it pasts the level of regular stupidity, pasts the level of so stupid it’s funny (see Phillips, Steve) and it reaches the level of stupidity where you’re just like “Dude, come the fuck on…”.

    • A.D.

Reading the comments of ppl ripping on him are excellent

    • pete

haha i love how he rips the astros for never giving up on a season, yet every trade here is basically a quick fix

  • E-ROC

    Nice 1-2-3 inning for Mussina.

  • A.D.

Hopefully bats get going 2nd time around

  • E-ROC

The Yanks are being worked over by a bum.

    • A.D.

He was a #1 overall pick

      • E-ROC

This is true and he is definitely looking like one through five frames. This happens all the time against the Yanks for some reason.

    • Glen L

if Bum = KC’s number 1 draft pick .. then yes, i suppose so

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

I feel sorry for those of you who do not have access to a TV, it is a fucking beauty what Mike Mussina is doing on the mound right now. When you guys get home you should definitely catch a couple innings on YES’ encore, it’s really a joy to watch.

    • Joey

MLB.tv is awesome. Sitting in class watching the game. Love it, awesome way to kill time and watch my Yanks

    • Tripp

What about what Hochevar is doing to the Yanks? Following on gamecast but still what is with the offense today?

      • eddyb

changing speeds, workin’ both sides of the plate, usin’ a lot of 2 seamers and striking out a-rod on ankle high pitches

      • Joey

They look bad which is making him look good

  • eddyb

Michael Kay needs to pick one pronunciation of Luke Hochevar’s name and just go with it. So far he’s used about 4 or 5 different ones.

  • eddyb

Has anyone heard anything about Phil Hughes’s progress? Anything about his ETA back in the majors… assuming there’s room…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Mussina just hit 90-MPH with that Two-Seamer.

    • Joey

I saw it once earlier on the YES gun (don’t know if its accurate)

  • Anthony M

speaking of mlb.tv…did anyone have problems getting silverlight to work on windows xp?

I downloaded it and could not get it to work cause it said I was not logged in as the owner of the computer…there are no other users on my computer so I am completely dumbfounded. My mother just got mlb.tv as well and she had the same problem.

Anybody else with this problem? And a possible solution?

    • Joey

Dunno, I have Vista and didn’t have any trouble (but feel bad for me anyway… Vista’s slow as hell)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.
  • NYFan50

How long can Moose really keep putting up zeroes? Yanks better score soon.

    • Joey

      Not long enough…

    • A.D.

      Question answered…6 & 2/3

  • Hybrid Moments

Damnit man. I hope the Yankees come right back and put up three runs.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

    A-Rod is a God.

    • Joey

No no no… Mo is God. A-Rod can be like Poseidon or a lesser God if Zeus (Mo) is okay with it

      • BigBlueAL

Yeah Mo is a God. Jeter a saint. Arod is like Hercules or Achilles.

        • Joey

I think Mike, Ben, and Joe need to add a Godliness chart next to the depth chart so nobody else gets confused ;-)

        • pete

          haha i love you guys

  • Chip

    MVP MVP MVP

  • Joey

I sooooo called that HR… in my own head. Lol

  • BigBlueAL

Dejesus trying to fool everybody like he was gonna catch it, even slowed down Michael Kay’s hr call for a moment!!!! lol

  • Chip

I sure hope we get Moose the win here after he’s pitched so well

  • Chip

Why does anybody throw strikes to Cano? He always swings at them

  • A.D.

    Mussina coming back out?

  • Tripp

Why would you bring Moose back in for the 8th after the way he finished that inning?

  • Chip

Wow, sending him for the 8th? I guess he has pitched well. Hopefully we get another win plus a run in the bottom half to get to Mo!

    • Joey

Dunno, bats are making much better contact lately, I’d send Edwar out I guess

  • Chip

Giambi must have hooked Mussina up with some ‘roids

  • BigBlueAL

lets score a freakin run and make Moose the AL Wins leader!!

  • Chip

PHEW, well he made it, just barely, Moose for Cy Young!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Mike Mussina averaged eleven pitches an inning (just about, 89 in 8), talk about efficiency.

    CURE Auto Insurance owns.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

    Hip, Hip…

    • Joey

      JORGE!!!

  • A.D.

Is Moeller really running for posada?

    • TurnTwo

who else do you have on that bench that can run?

      (cue crickets…)

      • A.D.

Betemit…he’s no burner but I’d imagine faster that Moeller

      • http://mike@riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Darrell Rasner! NL teams pinch run other SP’s all the time.

    • http://mike@riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Hysterical. The master tactician is at work.

      • Joe

If he left Posada in, you’d wonder why they’re even carrying three catchers because he wouldn’t have a day off.

  • BigBlueAL

calls like that make me embarrassed to be an umpire. he was obviously safe from the naked eye.

    • Joey

      horrible call

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

Ed Montague sucks at his job. That’s all there is to it. His job is to be a good Major League Baseball umpire, and he’s blown two obvious calls in four days. That’s not very good.

  • Chip

Jeter can’t hit into a double play here so I predict he’ll get a hit

  • bostonsucks@life

Why does giardi not come out and argue ever what a sackless ass

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

So the Yanks should have bases loaded and no one out but because the umpires have their heads up their asses, it’s a runner on second with two outs. Embarrassing.

  • brad k

My God RAB has to be the most annoying self important blogs out there. You guy’s crack me up. First of all get some new contributors. It seems you have alienated most everyone except for the few die hards like e-roc, A.D., and Joey just to name a few of the schmucks who post here. I especially liked Badhay’s response to Axl. Talk about arrogant: “This post shouldn’t even be responded to b/c it’s so idiotic, however I will entertain it”. Wow thanks Badhay we were all on pins and needles waiting for your few words of wisdom….spare me.

I’ve been a Yankee fan for forty years. My grandfather worked at the stadium for 38 years. I was raised on a steady diet of NY Yankees. I have also had the privilege of living and working all over the United States (I currently live in NE Ohio) so I have had the chance to see how other people (when I say other I mean other than Mets fans) view the game and the Yankees in particular. For the most part Yankee fans are one of the best educated fan bases in the game (don’t tell that to St. Louis) but they are also the most arrogant. Just reading RAB has become a study in why so many people despise the Yank’s and their fans.

Hey Badhay and the other regulars here – grow a set of balls and learn to act like men. Other people have opinions too. Learn to respect those opinions even if you disagree and even if they are little out of left field. It’s only a game asshole.

    • LiveFromNewYork

      Miss your medication today?

    • Joey

you forgot Jamal. He should be a schmuck too!

    • Chip

What? I don’t get schmuck status? I need to be more arrogant I guess. Look buddy, it’s not our fault that Axl is an idiot. If you don’t like it here, then leave. I personally think this is the best Yankees fan site I’ve ever seen. Maybe because I happen to agree with Jamal, Joey, AD, Mike, Ben, ect or maybe it’s just because they’re right?

      • LiveFromNewYork

Axl is an idiot. That was one of the most idiotic posts I’ve ever read.

And I love people who burst a blood vessel and scream for someone to grow some balls and calling them an asshole and then says “It’s only a game.”

        Meds=missing a dose.

        • brad k

I didn’t burst a blood vessel and I am not screaming that’s just the way you here everything Chris Russo. Believe me if I could increase my dosing I would. You can never be too medicated but I’m sure you already know that. How long have you been on Ridilin anyway?

To the rest of the schmucks I apologize if I missed you. There are just too many of you for me to mention without being accused of a post that is too “freakin long”.

    • Geno

OK, I think I see where you went wrong here. This is a BLOG, not a BORG. We don’t operate as a collective mind here at RAB. When someone comments on a post, it is done of their own free will, and nobody else’s.

This may be a difficult concept to wrap your mind around, but I’m sure some of the “asshole, schmuck, no-balls” regulars here would happily explain it to you in person.

Nothing better than being told you have no balls by a guy hiding behind a keyboard. I’m not saying I want to meet you after school or anything, but I seriously doubt you’d call us such names face-to-face.

      Unreal.

    • batty

      Me too!

      • Chip

Yeah, batty is about the biggest schmuck out there, how come he isn’t included?

        • Joey

And BigBlueAl and many others deserve schmuck status!

          • BigBlueAL

            Yeah!!!!

    • LiveFromNewYork

      Oh and…

we don’t care about the opinions of people who despise the Yanks and their fans.

If we acted differently they’d still despise us.

So you can go on a goodwill tour there in east overshoe Ohio.

those of us who have a life here in New York will continue our despicable ways…

    • giselle

okay, brad. if you hate RAB so much why do you keep reading the blog? as far as axl’s post goes, he did include this little tidbit in the end:

“Is it the curse has been reversed? Did the Babe catch wind that there was going to be a new Yankee Stadium and change his mind about showing up in the playoffs for us?”

and if old baseball ghosts not helping out in the playoffs isn’t idiotic, i don’t know what is. if you seriously think that this blog has alienated its fans, you’re wrong. just because the same people post doesn’t mean that nobody else checks out the site.

you’ve been a yankee fan for 40 years. congratu-fucking-lations. i’m sorry that i can’t grow a set of balls and be a REAL man like you (since i’m a girl and all), but suffice it to say that you’re the asshole around here. Take your negativity elsewhere and get the fuck out.

  • Mac

    Captain Clutch will bone this.

    • Mac

      And I was wrong. Woohoo.

  • fresh

melky and cano both make me sick they are jus like eachother swing at balls all over the place and take fastballs right down the middle…cano gets a lil longer leash because hes proven he cant hit but hey….melky isnt hitting right now. not playing great defense and by the way theres someone playing center field in scranton that is doing really well…how about a call up and a cuple starts for gardner

  • LiveFromNewYork

I’m at work. Could someone tell me what is going on?

    • Joey

Gameday? If not do you mean now or earlier?

      • LiveFromNewYork

Gameday doesn’t work here. It used to but not anymore. don’t know why. It’s tough to complain about it.

  • Hybrid Moments

Cabrera is a fourth outfielder. I hope the Yanks realize this soon and get a real CFer.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Leo Nunez is on the 15-day DL. I was wondering why the hell we haven’t seen him in this series. He’s nasty.

    • Chip

Good thing too or he’d have come in a shut us down when they were up 10-6 the other night

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

You’ve got a damn good point there.

  • Chip

Well, at least we’re set up for A-Rod to walk-off in the bottom of the ninth

  • BigBlueAL

WHY THE FUCK do they throw a fastball inside to Guillen!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Joey

      They never learn

  • Chip

    Nooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Chip

I was honestly thinking to myself, if anybody but Mo were pitching, I’d walk Guillen

  • pete

we need to do to jose guillen what the mafia did to JFK

  • Chip

I wish we got to play one more game against the Royals so we could have somebody plunk Guillen

  • BigBlueAL

This is what happens when Mo has to pitch 3 straight fuckin days vs the fuckin Royals because the Yanks have to struggled against this piece of shit team for 4 straight games.

  • bostonsucks@life

And what was damon doing out there, he should of had that, he read that ball terribly

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

I thought that at first, but the replay showed the ball clearly out of Damon’s reach.

    • Chip

I’ll give him a pass there, it’s not what you would call a routine play and he’s been one of the best left fielders in the league this year

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

Jeez. We’re a demanding crowd! A pass on a ball out of his reach. :)

        • LiveFromNewYork

that’s the kind of schmucks we are!

  • NYFan50

This wouldn’t have been a problem if the offense could have managed more than 2 runs off Hochevar, who came in with a 5ish ERA.

    • Joey

Nicely put, seems to be a recurring theme w/ opposing SP vs. us

  • Adam

3 out of 4 is nice, but 2 out of 4 is straight shitty.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Better than 0-for-4 against Randy Wolf, Cha-Sung Baek, Will Ledezema and Josh Banks.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Joseph P.

      Ain’t that the truth.

      • BigBlueAL

i could give a rat’s ass what the Mets do, these r the Yankees, and 2 out of 4 vs the Royals at home would be pathetic.

  • A.D.

big bats gotta pick it up

  • BigBlueAL

wow, the 1b ump called Arod safe

  • LiveFromNewYork

Moose gets a no decision either way right?

    • Chip

      Yeah this one’s on Mo

    • A.D.

exactly, Mo is on the hook for the decision

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

If A-Rod doesn’t try to steal second base, I’m going to cry.

    • Chip

With Giambi up? I dunno about that one. If you’re gonna steal I’d say do it while Matsui is up so you can get in with two fly balls

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

I posted this when Matsui was up.

        • Chip

My bad, I agree he should have stolen when Matsui was up

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

The BB notwithstanding, would you be comfortable attempting a steal against that pick-off move?

      • A.D.

Does he dare try and steal 3rd?

  • Manimal

    Come on Matsui!!

  • Manimal

    giambi should bunt

  • MOOSE

Is it me, or does Mariona Rivera blow a save/game every time Michael Kay tries to blow him on-air?

  • BigBlueAL

    crap, Moeller is on deck.

    • Chip

I was thinking that could be a problem when they ran for Jorge

  • Manimal

awww shit. The king of GIDP Robbie Cano.

  • Chip

    Make or break time Robbie

  • bostonsucks@life

Please do something cano , my daughter is taking a nap on my chest so please don’t make me wake her up by yelling at you via tv for 9000 time this season

  • Chip

Wow and he didn’t swing at pitch number one

  • Adam

we are carrying 3 catchers, yet the crappiest one will hit in the bottom of the 9th with the game on the line and we can’t pitch hit because all of them have been used?!?!?!

    • Chip

Because our starter needed a day off and actually Chad’s been better with the bat so hopefully he can come through

    • Adam

      well played senior soria.

  • Mark B

    Can-O comes up short again….

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Can’t Shelley Duncan catch in an emergency situation, or was that Morgan Ensberg?

    • Chip

Ensberg was their third catcher out of spring training, I’d be surprised if anybody else on this roster can catch. Maybe Betemit?

    • Manimal

      It was shelley

    • A.D.

Ensberg, he told Girardi he caught in HS and could if they needed him to

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

    Best Plate Appearance ever.

  • Manimal

    Moeller is amazing.

  • Chip

I think getting hit by a pitch really speaks to how he’s a gritty player. O sorry, I forgot I’m not working for ESPN. That was pretty wonderful though, now let’s see if Melky can channel some of that A-Rod Zen he had earlier in the season

    • Chip

      Or maybe not

  • NYFan50

Another craptastic effort from the offense.

  • BigBlueAL

Remember how those “great” comeback wins earlier this week were supposed to be the turning points of the season and the Yanks were supposed to takeoff after those “great” wins?????

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

    I’m so done with Melky.

(Sorry about the site difficulties, folks.)

    • devin

so you agree with my feeling that gardner deserves a shot wit the big club then?

  • devin

time for gardner to get a shot in cf…just my opinion

    • Chip

It’s getting to that point, the problem is, if you take him out and only play him half of the time it’s hard to get any better and it also diminishes his trade value

      • Hybrid Moments

I have no problem with having Cabrera be a fourth outfielder or maybe even splitting time with Gardner. The Yankees have to stop kidding themselves with him. He is basically a guy they have in the lineup for his defense. This year, he isn’t playing good defense. And also, this team is getting old. They need younger players to pick up the slack of the declining veterans. Cabrera isn’t going to do that. I hope they trade for a CFer at the deadline.

        • devin

we dont need to trade for one i feel we have one at trip a in gardner …unlike alot of the yankee prospects i get this feeling that hes underrated…he reminds me of the scrappy do little things to win type ball playa this team is missing. alot of times our prospects get overhyped but in gardners case i think its the opposite.

  • JohnC

I just had a bad feeling about this game the moment Melky was called out on that bunt in the 8th inning. 2nd time that umpire screwed the Yanks in this series. Oh well, makes the flight to Oaklnad a little longer now.

  • BigBlueAL

I cant believe u guys r blaming Melky for this loss basically. Why the hell do u want to call-up Gardner who is actually a year older than Melky and until this season he hasnt showed any semblance of even a little power to save his life, not even in the Arizona Fall League for christ’s sake. PLEASE dont bring up his AAA numbers this season, his 2nd in Scranton, because i hope all of u guys realize how meaningless AAA numbers really are because lord knows we have seen plenty of examples of that (Shelley Duncan). Melky has been in the Major Leagues since age 21 and has a respectable career BA of .275 and already this season has nearly matched his career-high in homers. He has a very good arm and plays a very good defensive CF. The least of the Yankees problems is their no.9 hitting CF.

    • devin

im not blaming the lost on melky im jus sayin that him and cano are extremly aggrevating and one needs to have a lil fire lit unda there arse and the only person that is progressed enough to do it at eitha position is gardner so take a chance make a statement. make it be known that hey melky hey cano these jobs arent going to be yours unless you perform.

      • BigBlueAL

How is Melky underperforming??? His numbers r basically right on line with the previous 2 seasons, and considering he is the 9th hitter its more than enuff. Cano is really annoying the shit out of me too, but he has been too good in his career to give up on him. My favorite player ever (along with Mattingly) is Jeter, and to be honest he has by far been the least productive hitter in the everyday lineup. It doesnt help that Posada is still basically a 2 out of 3 days catcher for the moment, really does hurt the lineup when he isnt there everyday.

The whole lineup today was a joke basically. It took until they were down 2-0 in the 7th to start to hit, and even then as usual they leave 5 runners on base in the last 2 innings. How in the world you score 9 runs in an amazing comeback against one of the best pitching staffs in baseball against Toronto, then in the following series lose 2-1 and 3-2 to the freakin Royals with 2 games in between where you score 18 runs on 30 hits or so is beyond amazing. Against the Royals we had 2 starters give up 2 runs in 8 innings and LOSE both of those games. That is inexcusable and the blame goes to the entire lineup as a whole.

        • devin

i understand all that but you know what melky. how bout picking up your lineup who got the bases loaded down 1 in the ninth and pick up your hall of fame closer whose pitched to much the last couple days. basehit up the middle probably wins the game . and how bout not swinging at the second pitch. the closer right there is under immense pressure you gave the pressure no chasnce to set in.

    • Hybrid Moments

Sorry but I don’t want someone who can’t put up an OPS+ of 100 playing CF for the Yankees. I don’t care how good of an arm he has.

      • BigBlueAL

If thats the case, i guarantee you Gardner isnt the asnwer thats for sure.

        • devin

you dont know that. we know what melky is we dont know wat brett is. maybe hes a quad A player but then again maybe hes the one player that defies all scouts and becomes a solid fixture in the majors and evolves into our lead off man of the future.

  • Axl

I’ve noticed some of you like to rip my posts apart mainly because of the length. My guess is that because it was so long..I should have continued to make it longer by talking about Edwar Ramirez, etc…and some more of the positive things that have been happening since the Yankees have been plummeting…I’m sorry but I’ve been upset with them for quite some time and just like today…the starting pitching does awesome…time for the unthinkable to happen and ruin that good start by Iron Mike…Rivera gives up another home run to Guillen.
    When it rains…it pours.

    – Axl

  • stuart

did not read all the posts.. melky not the problem but how is his sidekick Cno doing? He is atrocious and is the worst player in the lineup YTD….

nice call from montague!!!!!!!!how bad are these officials…. selig is amoron and they do nothing about totally incompetent calls by these old, lazy, arrogant jerks..

montague made 2 huge mistakes in 4 games, but does anyone give a sh-t..

    • JohnnyC

No, because it’s happening to the Yankees. If it were the Red Sox getting robbed, Selig would fire the lot of them. And hire George Mitchell to recruit a new set of umpires.
