Joey Devine was pretty filthy this season before getting injured: 1.23 ERA 1.05 WHIP 11.45 K/9 4.00 K/BB. It's way too early to say that he'll never reach his potential. In fact, he's pitched 22 innings so far this season after entering the year with 19.2 career innings pitched. First impressions are hard to shake but they're often inconclusive.

I disagree with the characterization of Cueto as a mediocre pitcher. Yes his era is high, but it doesn't help that he pitches in cincy.

He's really got great stuff with fantastic movement, and while he threw his slider a lot yesterday, his change-up is really the better pitch ... he's a very good very promising young pitcher, who over the course of the season has just been inconsitent at times ... that doesn't make him mediocre IMHO .. he clearly can pitch well when he's on

Mariano Rivera had a somewhat shaky save???? The 2 hits he gave up was an infield excuse-me hit and a blooper that barely reached the outfield. If Patterson wouldve been called out as he shouldve then Dunn's K wouldve been the final out and not Hopper's at-bat which did go to a full-count. Dont try to take a shot at my man Mo!!!! Remember Mo is a GOD!!!!

yes, Ponson will likely suck and then he will be released. but the Yankees actually need a starter to start that game.

what are the options?

Igawa
Ponson
Horne
Karstens
??

Horne is coming back from an injury and i just don't think he is ready yet. Ponson has just as good of a chance as Igawa or Karstens.

who knows, the Yankees might get lucky for 1-2 starts.

he pitched ok in Texas. he was a groundball machine, limited the walks and kept the ball in the park. if he can do that on Friday, he'll last more than 2 innings.

i don't have a ton of faith in him, but with the double header, the yankees need a 6th starter. i don't see a ton of better options.

Some random Yankee thoughts:

Can John Flaherty perhaps grow his hair a tad longer? If they ever do another movie about Das Fuhrer, if Flash is available, given the present state of his head, I'd offer him the lead role...

Sidney Ponson? THE Sidney Ponson? You mean we have to face the second team from the Big Apple next weekend (you know the ones, those sartorially challenged masters of PR from Queens) and the best we could find to pitch is SIDNEY PONSON? Give me a break. He'll not last two innings. I'd rather they ask David Cone to throw 80 pitches and turn the game over to the LLC known as Olendorf Ramirez and friends...

Kimberly Jones remains a babe. Some things NEVER change.

I believe that is the right approach with Ohly. Once he gets settled in to the job he will turn things around. I've watched him in the MiL many times...he will be alright, I hope! 27/08?
