Yanks’ sixth pick #170 overall

With their 5th round pick, the Yanks’ selected Chris Smith, LF, Centennial HS (Ca.)

(not finding a picture with a name like that)

Scouting Report: Can’t find anything on him. Baseball America rated him the 105th best prospect in the state of California though. Here’s his scouting video.

My Take: Dunno enough to say. Maybe he’s a tooled up uber-athlete like Austin Jackson. Seems like a little bit of an overdraft.

Outlook: Rookie level GCL I guess.

Looks like they’re going one more round. Those cooky front office execs.

Update: This boy can hit. His line this year: .708-.744-1.361-2.105.

  1. Kenneth Williams (draftee of ChiSox) at all related to Kenny Williams (GM, ChiSox)?

Did the Reds just take Clay Buchholz’s little brother?

Hold onto your consumer electronics, CIncinatti…

  3. Lanny says:

Any signability guys out there? Like Carmine A from last yr?

    • Matt G says:

I sure hope so. It’s disconcerting to watch the top flight signability guys disappear in the early rounds, while the yanks take sure-fire signees. The strategy doesn’t seem too different from the last two years, but the results may very well disappoint. I don’t know that we can claim a Betances or Angelini in round ten. I’m not quite panicking (recall where Snyder and Laird were taken). At the same time, Opp seems a bit conservative with his hand: he certainly hasn’t gone after a McAllister, not to mention a Joba supplemental type.

My basic problem with the draft so far (and again the late round spending power hasn’t yet been unleashed) is that it is out of synch with our farm system. Yes, we need middle infielders. But seriously, where is this UVA kid going? The farm system is deep enough at this point to target high ceiling guys; if they don’t sign, it’s not the end of the world.

According to the stuff on nyyfans.com, he has the highest BA in America.

  5. Jose Duran (UTexas) just went. Not in BA’s top 100, but has racked up insane stats since HS

The 105th best prospect in the state?

  7. Jamal G. says:

If I am not mistaken the MLB.com analysts said that Kenneth Williams is actually the son of ChiSox GM Kenny William.

Your link says that in 20 games, he had only one game without a hit… Nice.

Is he an OF, or a 1B? Picture seems to show him defending the bag. 6’2″ 195, L/L, only 18.5 YO…

  10. Mike A. says:

    Damn, there goes Shreve.

  11. Colby Shreve in the 6th? overdraft. He just blew out his arm…

  12. Come on Yanks! Kyle Long!

  13. Jamal G. says:

Sonny Gray seems to have a concrete decision to go to school, but money is titanium, do you think the Yankees can get him to sign?

  14. Jamal G. says:

Brett Marshall has two plus pitches, nice pick Yanks.

  15. what is it with these RHPs. We have enough. We need a fucking bat–do you hear me, Damon Oppenheimer?????

  16. dan says:

Comments on Brett Marshall sound very intriguing…. 4/7 picks in HS for the day

  17. and that concludes today’s drafting!

  18. Stryker says:

how is danny webb still out there?! COME ON yanks!!

  19. The Fallen Phoenix says:

Yankees got Brett Marshall in the sixth? Wow, that’s a fantastic value pick. SaberScouting had him #36 in their top 100 list of draft prospects.

  20. Rich M says:

The sox are falling apart. manny and Youk got into a shoving match in the dugout.

  21. JT says:

what happened between manny and youk?

  22. Steve says:

I love the MLB draft. Every idiot on the planet makes an even bigger idiot of himself. Nobody knows nothing about these players. Yet we hear things like reach and other nonsense. What a joke. Good for humor though.
