It’s nice to have Johnny Damon back atop the lineup, especially considering that the Yanks score 1.22 more runs per game when he’s playing, but am I the only one that thinks a minor league rehab stint would be in order, even if it was just a 3-gamer with the nearby Staten Island Yanks? I mean, he last played in a game on the 4th of July, so it’s been 17 days since he faced live pitching. Plus check this out: with the Damon in the lineup, the Yanks are 41-41, but without him they’re 12-4. I dunno about you, but I smell a nice 0-fer coming tonight.

While getting Damon back is big news, the far bigger news is that Jorge Posada has been placed on the DL and is probably done for the year. While his throwing has deterioriated immensely, his bat remained a weapon (109 OPS+) and downright Ruthian compared to Jose Molina (48 OPS+, yikes). Luckily the 3rd Annual Robinson Cano Second Half Surge has begun, but the Yanks are still going to need some other guys to pick up the slack (I’m lookin’ at you, kid). Maybe they can buy low Josh Bard, who’s currently playing in rehab games after having his season derailed by Albert Pujols.

1. Damon, DH
2. Jeter, SS
3. Abreu, RF
4. A-Rod, 3B
5. Giambi, 1B
6. Cano, 2B
7. Melky, CF
8. Molina, C
9. Gardner, LF

And on the mound, the Amazin’ Arubian, Sidney Ponson.

batty says:

It’s a blow but Posada really wasn’t helping out anyone right now, this will open up some possibilities on the bench.

batty says:

Sorry, meant DH spot. Pretty much the same right now though.

whozat says:

Juan Miranda? Unless they ALSO have private concerns about Damon’s shoulder. He doesn’t help against lefties, but this’d look ok against righties:

Damon LF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
ARod 3B
Giambi 1B
Cano 2B
Miranda DH
Molina C
Cabrera CF

RollingWave says:

Or a certain best hitter of all time would be nice….

Chris says:

Just to go back to the issue of Jorge’s contract… I think it’s foolish to judge that so early in the contract. For example, at this point in Beltran’s contract with the Mets, he had a 755 OPS, and it was obvious to anyone that the contract was a disaster. Except for the fact that he turned it around and is now one of the best CF in the league.

Joey H says:

i think the straw that broke the camels back was posada’s july avg. i think i remember them saying posadas arm doesnt hurt its just inability. but if you ask me this couldnt have happened at a better time with posada leaving, this is a fairly quick team.

TheLastClown says:

It’s more the straw that broke Posada’s shoulder.

Joey H says:

i mean the thing that pulled the trigger to tossing him on the DL

TheLastClown says:

Got that, but he’s on the DL because he’s disabled….disabled list….not ineffective hitting list

Joey H says:

a .212 average in july is pretty ineffective if you ask me.

Joey H says:

oh and on MLBTR they said that duscherer(spelling) is probably available. what would you think a bout the bombers getting him or would bean just break cashmans balls too hard and thats it?

whozat says:

Hasn’t it been said repeatedly that Duch is pitching way, way over his head? His BABIP is way, way below league average, and his K rate is poor as well.

Remember Brian Bannister’s 2007? Solid year, authored primarily on the back of an unsustainably low BABIP. Look at him now. Duch is a prime candidate to have the same kind of fall to earth.

Especially if you put him in front of the Yankee defense instead of the A’s defense.

Could he be decent? Oh, certainly. That’s very possible. But, to pay for him like he’s an All-Star when the likelihood is you’ll wind up with a guy who’s kind of average? Boo.

Similar with Nady. Buying him now, you’ll pay like he’s a perennial 130 OPS+ guy. When he goes back to being a 105 OPS+ corner OFer, you’ll be SOL.

whozat says:

For the rest of the trade season the RAB guys should put a button on the page that just inserts duch’s (properly spelled) name into the comment box :-)

Joey H says:

well say he ends up being average as you say which is totally sensable, we can have an average 13 game winner behind joba wang pettite next year. thats not so bad man. considering hes not even making 2 mill i think

whozat says:

Did you just read straight past this part of what I said?

“to pay for him like he’s an All-Star when the likelihood is you’ll wind up with a guy who’s kind of average?”

It’d be a classic case of buying high, and I’m not talking about money.

TheLastClown says:

Money’s not a problem for the Yanks, especially next year. I believe they’ll get CC or Sheets, maybe both? Fingers crossed.

The issue with Duchscherer is maybe he crashes back to earth THIS year

Joey H says:

ok this really shows how much you know, do you really think they can take on two hundred million dollar contracts?! c’mon mannnnnnnnn. thats insane! i get they are the yankees and all but still. maybe not two 100 mill contracts cause of sheets injury history but c’mon. not both.

christopher says:

they have done it before…whats the difference if they take on 11 miilion dllar contacts 4 yeasrs straight - why not 2 in one year

RustyJohn says:

That is an ugly bottom third of the line-up- can Mussina play center, left or catch? His bat may be more potent.

Really though, why don’t they play Moeller more? Yes, he isn’t Josh Gibson back there, but I have a hard time believing that he hits worse than Molina.

Haggs says:

He will likely catch Rasner for as long as Rasner is in the rotation.

RustyJohn says:

What the hell else is out there on the cheap? Miguel Olivo?

Haggs says:

I don’t get how Posada went from here a few weeks ago (via LoHud)….

Privately, however, Posada has expressed his dissatisfaction with Joe Girardi’s decision to start Jose Molina in each of the Yankees’ last six games - including Thursday night’s makeup game with the Pirates - according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

“I like to catch. Okay?” Posada said. “I’m in the lineup and I’m happy that I’m in the lineup, but I like to catch. I’m a catcher. I’m not a first baseman and I’m not a DH. I like to catch, so I’m looking forward to catching (today).”

To here today…..

“The shoulder is messed up. I have no power when I go to make a throw and there’s pain every time I make a throw. It has been like that all season.”

Why would he criticize Girardi’s decision if he knew he shouldn’t be catching?

TheLastClown says:

Maybe a pride thing? Look at every time Jeter’s hurt, he vehemently denies it. These guys make a lot of money, and my bet is most of them want to feel like they’re earning it.

Joey H says:

thats exactly why i said this guy wont appreciate being moved to first and becasue he is such a “vocal” leader they will always give him what he wants, georgey, you arent an allstar catcher anymore!

TheLastClown says:

If he’s healthy, and can bring his bat back to life, he’ll have to “appreciate” moving to first.

Also, nothing really exists to say whether or not he’ll be able to throw post-surgery. This may be a moot point.

I personally don’t like the contract ONLY because if or when he transitions to first, it may coincide with having to move Jeter there, whom I think will be an EXCELLENT first basemen.

whozat says:

Jeter’s bat isn’t even adequate for a SS right now. Moving him to 1B would be a huge offensive hole for the team. If you’re going to bring in another SS and move Jeter, send him to CF. His bat’d be tolerable there, and Jackson’s a couple years away.

Joey says:

A-Jax is said to be looking to mid 2009, not years

TheLastClown says:

They won’t move Jeter for a couple of years…A-Jax will probably be around by then

Chris says:

He’s currently 5th (out of 17) in the AL among SS with at least 100PA. Of course, this says more about the other SS than it does about Jeter, but still… he’s above average, and should improve.

Joey H says:

if you ask me the hugest shot at him was that injury early on, couldnt establish his usual rhythm

Joey H says:

oh and jeter makes that play over his head in the ooutfield better than anyone ive ever seen lol

Joey H says:

absolutely, but heres a question, what happens if we sign texiera this offseason? then we have no spot to put our old veterans anymore right..

TheLastClown says:

That is one of the reasons they won’t sign Tex, I feel. They’ve got a lot of potential offense as it is, plus he’s going to command a really big contract, $$ and years wise.

Joey H says:

but we (yankee organization) needs to get away from this word that cashman has come to love” potiental” lol potiental has phil hughes 0-4 with a 9 era. nahhh meannnn? lol

TheLastClown says:

Nahhh meannnn? what does that mean?

Potential had Phil Hughes come in, in a handicapped post season situation, and sparkle with his velocity, command, and tenacity.

A broken rib is what had him underperform this year.

You like to blame injuries on the guys that bear them. Why?

(Comments wont nest below this level)
Joey H says:

its supposed to be a joke, like “knowwhat i mean” guess you dont have much of a personality. hughes was hurt in his LAST start with the yankees, they said he could have pitched through it so dont go and make it like its a huge deal.

Joey says:

I think it means “you know what I mean” But Hughes pitched who knows how many games with a broken rib, he has the command, velocity, and just raw stuff to flash ace potential, the only thing he hasn’t shown us is he can stay healthy and he is still very very young, so at this moment no you shouldn’t be concerned about him. I don’t know enough to really talk about the scouting aspect that intelligently, thats Mike and Jamal, but I’d rather have Hughes and his potential for years to come than trade him and our farm away for a rental. Plus, Joba has amazing potential but you don’t seem to be complaining about him, he’s blazing through ML lineups (of course this pitch count thing, I know)

TheLastClown says:

If it isn’t a big deal how come he’s out for months on end? The Yankees said he probably DID pitch through it, to the losing tune you’d like to crucify him for.

Interpreting phonetic typed slang isn’t exactly a measure of personality Joe

Joey says:

he’s 22 years old man, and yes sarcasm and shit is hard to detect on boards like these, sorry if I misinterpreted it

Joey H says:

the thing is, they could have pitched him through it, i remember them saying so when they put him on the DL we know the office considers him to be like a godsend and dont wanna risk it but sure thats fine. the problem at hand is that we need to stop with this young potiental stuff, and get PROOVEN players. tex is great for the yankees a switch hitting first baseman with an above average glove.

TheLastClown says:

Joey, I wasnt talking to you, I was talking to Joey H…..who said I must have no personality, sorry about the cross up.

And as for you Joey H. No matter how many capital or extra letters you use, I disagree, so does Brian Cashman, and thats that.

Joey H says:

listen man you are talking about getting sheets and sabathia so i cant take anything you say seriously.

TheLastClown says:

And you truly believe that they could have “pitched him through” an injury that shut him down for four months? Do you not see the absurdity of that?

Hip Hip JOSE!

Im arguing & watching :)

TheLastClown says:

Ok, and Im talking about getting them in the offseason when we’ll have all kinds of money to spend, and they’re both entering Free Agency. I know its a long shot to get both of them, but its feasible, it won’t cost prospects, and I like to hope big.

Joseph P. says:

You sound like you’re 12, so you probably don’t remember the disastrous trades in the 80s of young potential for “PROOVEN’ players.

Joey H says:

i know what yo uare talking about its obviously not gonna happen now when they are in the middle of a divisional race. and i said from the begining the team said he could have pitched thru it but it wasnt worth the risk. and yo uare still insane if you think two aces will sign with the yankees. i dotn know what video game you are playing where you do this but its not the “cashman” way

Joey H says:

thats real tough of you joseph. call me a 12 year old.

Mike A. says:

Chill out, we’re all hear to talk about the game. No reason to be obnoxious or call someone names. This goes for everyone here.

Joey H says:

yup thats what im doing lol, trying to get people to understand that ben sheets and CC sabathia arent going to both be yankees next year lol

Joey H says:

yep just trying to get people to understand sheets and sabatia wont both be yankees next year

Joey H says:

sorry for the double it didnt show up the first time

Joseph P. says:

It’s not being tough. It’s bringing into consideration your horrible spelling/grammar — which is just an observation, not an insult — and your specious reasoning.

Joey H says:

yeah my horrible speech and grammar, its called typing fast pal.

I just can’t stop laughing. You’re like the end of the Benny Hill show, where everything is in fast motion…

cult of basebaal says:

i’m telling you, he’s the next andy kaufmann. he’s brilliant

Joey H says:

sure… read the whole thing. or stay out of it =)

christopher says:

for the price of trx yhey can get burrell and dunn…maybe even vlad and someone…how noice would vld (a winning playe) fo whatever that is woth patroling right field. dunn plays lf for a year and then moves to Dh

TheLastClown says:

Michael Kay thinks of the Home Run Derby not in terms of rounds, but in terms of stanzas….I always knew you were a poet Michael…..

The Fallen Phoenix says:

I miss watching Yankee games without listening to Michael Kay. Why couldn’t he stay on vacation?

Chris says:

Joey H says:

OHHHHH c’mon mannnn lol you really like kenny calling games, who is like on a 2 second delay with all his calls? or flaherty who loves to talk about what a shitty player her was? lol

Ben K. says:

Can you watch the language a bit please? Too much profanity. Make your point without it.

TurnTwo says:

Singleton over Michael Kay? absolutely.

Joey H says:

oh c’monnnnnnnn lol thats not fair! i dont know i like michael kay. but its definately fair to question his skills.
