Charleston’s offense stays hot, but they lose again anyway

By Mike Axisa

The uninspiring Austin Jackson was named the Eastern League Offensive Player of the Week thanks to his .643 BA. Phil Coke was named EL Pitcher of the Week. Allowing 5 hits with 21 strikeouts in 14 IP will earn you that honor. Brian Baisley won NY-Penn League Offensive Player of the Week honors, but he’s the oldest position player in the league, roughly 6 years older than league average.

TPA posted their Midseason Top 10 Yankees’ Prospects. Hard to argue with that list, very well put together.

Remember, the number in parenthesis following a player’s name is the round he was selected in if he was an ‘08 draftee.

christopher says:

is that serious???

A.D. says:

They could try and buy low on Teagarden, which would still be really high

Bruno says:

I’m just throwing it out there. Thoughts?

I wanna say something. I’m gonna put it out there; if you like it, you can take it, if you don’t, send it right back…

I want to be on you.

Mike A. says:

And you ate the whole … wheel of cheese? How’d you do that? Heck, I’m not even mad; that’s amazing.

Mike, I’m not gonna lie to you, that smells like pure gasoline.

Mike A. says:

I’m gonna punch you in the ovary, that’s what I’m gonna do. A straight shot. Right to the baby maker.

(Comments wont nest below this level)

I’m not a baby, I am a man! I am an anchorman! I’m a man who discovered the wheel, and built the Eiffel Tower out of metal, and brawn. That’s what kind of man I am. You’re just a woman with a small brain. With a brain a third the size of us. It’s science.

Mike A. says:

Hello? Who’s there? Hello? Who is this? Baxter … is that you? Baxter! Bark twice if you’re in Milwaukee … Is this Wilt Chamberlain? Have the courage to say something! Hello?

Little Ham ‘n Eggs comin’ at ya, hold on people, hope ya got your griddles…

Brandon says:

more like Alan Horne, Ian Kennedy, JB Cox, Kevin Whelan and Jairo Heredia for Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Milton Bradley ?…I spoke to some Rangers tonight they feel we can make a good trade partner w/ them since they have OF depth and C depth they would part w/ Salty and the FA to be Milton Bradley.

Mike A. says:

Why would Texas do that? Where’s the potential star?

Brandon says:

Texas wants pitching and Bradleey is FA after this season, they have Max Ramirez and Teagarden as good fill ins if they lose Salty. This could work.

Harry says:

You realize you can’t throw 4 B-C level prospects and get back a star right?

I know you want a catcher and an all star DH but come on. Use that noggin.

Ben K. says:

This “out of left field” trade rumors in the threads that are mostly off topic really should stop.

Aaron says:

Absolutely. I agree.

IPK for Jake Peavy, straight up?

A.D. says:

IPK for Young and Adrian Gonzalez….oh wait thats a better deal than what Texas got for Young and Gonzalez

AndrewYF says:

No way the Rangers agree to that. They’ll ask for Hughes and will walk once the Yankees hang up.

cult of basebaal says:

no, they’ll be asking for joba.

christopher says:

not a very impressive list after all the injuries and call-ups

A.D. says:

Malec just keeps hitting, all the kid does.

Carson MLE Equivalent….he’d be hitting in the 270s as a Yankee, not the worst option

rconn23 says:

I know Malec is old for AA, but all the guy has done is hit well at every level. His .OBP is terrific, as he always has more walks than strikeouts. He deserves a promotion soon.

A.D. says:

He should be getting Ransom’s playing time in AAA, who is 32, and the definition of filler

Reggie C. says:

What’s the report on Angellini’s offensive skills? Its not like he’s excelled but he doesn’t appear to be overmatched either. Is he going to get moved up to Tampa next season? I think it’ll probably be better to see him start next season at Low-A again. Is this kid still the best internal option at replacing Jeter when the time comes?

Mike A. says:

I think they’ll keep him down in Charleston to start the year, and look to bump him up to Tampa midseason.

He’s the best in-house candidate to replace Jeter, and offensively he makes good contact and has a decent amount of pop for a HS MIF.

Mike A. says:

Tony Pena Jr., KC’s backup infielder, just struck out Pudge Rodriguez. This was after Jimmy Gobble gave up 10 ER in the 8th inning.

Manimal says:

WTF is he doing pitching, did they really run out of pitchers?

Mike A. says:

They’re getting slaughtered.

A.D. says:

He’s always had a great arm

Manimal says:

HAHA watch him end up as a reliever. He sported a 91 mph Fastball with a 75 mph curve. I gotta see this on ESPN.

A.D. says:

Thats some good stuff, and given he can’t hit, might be a shot

Manimal says:

Holliday is raking, 3 HR’s since his allstar game homerun.

Mike A. says:

Jackin’ the price up, pun intended.

Manimal says:

What are the odds that Posada stays with the team? He may not be able to play but he is a baseball genius when it comes to x’s and o’s. 100% guaranteed he becomes a manager when he retires.

A.D. says:

I’d guess he’d stay around to be able to talk to the pitchers and such, he’s no Pavano

Manimal says:

I need advice, should I keep Manimal or should I make it Manny M. like everyone else has.

Mike A. says:

Keep it as Manimal. It has personality. The “First + Last Initial.” just started with the authors. Somehow it spread to the commentors.

Manimal says:

Monkey see monkey do. I guess I’ll keep it.

dan says:

The lower-case “dan” never goes out of style. Does anyone actually call him “Joseph” btw?

Joseph P. says:

This one chick in college did. But other than that, only when I’m in the doghouse with the old lady.

Joe, I hate to break it to you, but that “chick” in college?

It was Ben.

ChrisS says:

I’ve been commentating on the intertubes as ChrisS for a long, long time, I’ll have you know. I’m my own person!

A.D. says:

So far Malec has had one black hole of season 2006, where he hit .229 in 306 at bats (split between A and A+), that basically derailed him for a year as he returned to the same two stops on ‘07 and hit over .300. Now hes doing the same thing at AA. Presumably without ‘06 he’d be in AAA pushing his way to the majors.

He’s not going to give you pop of a normal corner infielder, and certainly not a 1b where his best shot with the yankees is, but his doubles numbers are improving, and he’s putting up slugging numbers not that far off from what Youkilis did in AA, in the same league. Wouldn’t be the worse thing if he could be a .280 + hitter with maturing gap power, basically our version of Kevin Youkilis with a few less walks, and a switch hitter.

N

A.D. says:

That N was suppose to be Net in net give the kid a shot at AAA

dan says:

Jairo’s control has slipped a little bit this year. Your scouting report said something like he threw too many strikes.

dan says:

and he has braces.

Arizona Steve says:

Christian Garcia pitched for the GCL Yanks today. 1.2 innings. 5 hits and two runs. So, not so great, but he’s back on the mound.

Brandon says:

A.D. says:

Baby steps, I don’t care what his line is, if he’s healthy

Mulls says:

i definitely dont wanna sell that low on jairo, id pick up salty if his stock is really as low as it seems right now, but doesnt that seem like overkill especially with all our catching prospects in the system and posada for another 3 years…im assuming cerevelli can be posadas caddy as soon as next year montero might be 2 years away from the show ..but he likely wont stay at catcher, i think romine is definitely the catcher of the future. i think texas would bite on a kennedy, horne or kontos, cox(longhorn closer), whelan(texas a&m) package. thats a decent haul for saltalamachia right? i mean a potential 2-3 in kennedy, id take kontos if i were them , and 2 pretty projectable bullpen arms. im guessing theyd want mcallister.

Reggie C. says:

Why would Salty be available? The Rangers have a very deep system. They’ve got some incredible arms – Neftali Perez and some other guys i’m forgetting. With the young team they’re fielding, they need SP & bullpen help. Kennedy is not a 2/3 btw. Definitely more like a 4/5.

felixpanther says:

Salty is a 1B, not the catcher of the future, just like Jesus Montero. Why not call up Carson, he’s having a career year in AAA

Bryan says:

Thanks mike for adding my suggestion about the draft rounds.

Mike A. says:

Sure thing, thanks for the suggestion.

Dibiase says:

what is the story with Phil Coke? Is he a legit prospect? If so, how far away is he?

Jean Afterman says:

We’re looking at a Joba for Pujols swap.
