Charleston’s offense stays hot, but they lose again anyway

By

The uninspiring Austin Jackson was named the Eastern League Offensive Player of the Week thanks to his .643 BA. Phil Coke was named EL Pitcher of the Week. Allowing 5 hits with 21 strikeouts in 14 IP will earn you that honor. Brian Baisley won NY-Penn League Offensive Player of the Week honors, but he’s the oldest position player in the league, roughly 6 years older than league average.

TPA posted their Midseason Top 10 Yankees’ Prospects. Hard to argue with that list, very well put together.

Remember, the number in parenthesis following a player’s name is the round he was selected in if he was an ’08 draftee.

    IPK for Salty?

  2. AndrewYF says:

No way the Rangers agree to that. They’ll ask for Hughes and will walk once the Yankees hang up.

  3. christopher says:

not a very impressive list after all the injuries and call-ups

  4. A.D. says:

Malec just keeps hitting, all the kid does.

Carson MLE Equivalent….he’d be hitting in the 270s as a Yankee, not the worst option

  5. rconn23 says:

I know Malec is old for AA, but all the guy has done is hit well at every level. His .OBP is terrific, as he always has more walks than strikeouts. He deserves a promotion soon.

  6. Reggie C. says:

What’s the report on Angellini’s offensive skills? Its not like he’s excelled but he doesn’t appear to be overmatched either. Is he going to get moved up to Tampa next season? I think it’ll probably be better to see him start next season at Low-A again. Is this kid still the best internal option at replacing Jeter when the time comes?

    • Mike A. says:

I think they’ll keep him down in Charleston to start the year, and look to bump him up to Tampa midseason.

He’s the best in-house candidate to replace Jeter, and offensively he makes good contact and has a decent amount of pop for a HS MIF.

  7. Mike A. says:

Tony Pena Jr., KC’s backup infielder, just struck out Pudge Rodriguez. This was after Jimmy Gobble gave up 10 ER in the 8th inning.

  8. Manimal says:

Holliday is raking, 3 HR’s since his allstar game homerun.

  9. Manimal says:

What are the odds that Posada stays with the team? He may not be able to play but he is a baseball genius when it comes to x’s and o’s. 100% guaranteed he becomes a manager when he retires.

  10. Manimal says:

I need advice, should I keep Manimal or should I make it Manny M. like everyone else has.

  11. A.D. says:

So far Malec has had one black hole of season 2006, where he hit .229 in 306 at bats (split between A and A+), that basically derailed him for a year as he returned to the same two stops on ’07 and hit over .300. Now hes doing the same thing at AA. Presumably without ’06 he’d be in AAA pushing his way to the majors.

He’s not going to give you pop of a normal corner infielder, and certainly not a 1b where his best shot with the yankees is, but his doubles numbers are improving, and he’s putting up slugging numbers not that far off from what Youkilis did in AA, in the same league. Wouldn’t be the worse thing if he could be a .280 + hitter with maturing gap power, basically our version of Kevin Youkilis with a few less walks, and a switch hitter.

Jairo’s control has slipped a little bit this year. Your scouting report said something like he threw too many strikes.

  13. Arizona Steve says:

Christian Garcia pitched for the GCL Yanks today. 1.2 innings. 5 hits and two runs. So, not so great, but he’s back on the mound.

  14. Mulls says:

i definitely dont wanna sell that low on jairo, id pick up salty if his stock is really as low as it seems right now, but doesnt that seem like overkill especially with all our catching prospects in the system and posada for another 3 years…im assuming cerevelli can be posadas caddy as soon as next year montero might be 2 years away from the show ..but he likely wont stay at catcher, i think romine is definitely the catcher of the future. i think texas would bite on a kennedy, horne or kontos, cox(longhorn closer), whelan(texas a&m) package. thats a decent haul for saltalamachia right? i mean a potential 2-3 in kennedy, id take kontos if i were them , and 2 pretty projectable bullpen arms. im guessing theyd want mcallister.

    • Reggie C. says:

Why would Salty be available? The Rangers have a very deep system. They’ve got some incredible arms – Neftali Perez and some other guys i’m forgetting. With the young team they’re fielding, they need SP & bullpen help. Kennedy is not a 2/3 btw. Definitely more like a 4/5.

  15. felixpanther says:

Salty is a 1B, not the catcher of the future, just like Jesus Montero. Why not call up Carson, he’s having a career year in AAA

  16. Bryan says:

Thanks mike for adding my suggestion about the draft rounds.

  17. Dibiase says:

what is the story with Phil Coke? Is he a legit prospect? If so, how far away is he?

  18. Jean Afterman says:

We’re looking at a Joba for Pujols swap.
