Game 105: Just a speed bump

By

So the Yanks 8-game winning streak came to an abrupt, but predictable end last night. Tell me that game didn’t have that “eh, we’ve won 8 in row, we can mail this one in” feel to it right from the start. Oh well, can’t win ‘em all.

The Yanks have lost 5 or 9 to the O’s this year, getting outscored 46-35 in the process, but they haven’t played each other since a three game set at the end of May. The O’s are 8-15 this month, and have lost 5 of their last 6. Their staff has a 5.85 ERA since the break, and tonight’s starter, Jeremy Guthrie, has an 8.10 career ERA in Yankee Stadium. Moose has a .588 winning percentage against his former team. This sounds too easy, so you know what that means…

1. Damon, DH
2. Jeter, SS
3. Abreu, RF
4. A-Rod, 3B
5. Giambi, 1B
6. Cano, 2B
7. X Nady VI, LF
8. Melky, CF
9. Molina, C

And on the mound, Mike “why are you surprised? I’ve won 263 games in my career, bitches” Mussina.

Notes: This series will be a nice test for new addition Damaso Marte; lefties Nick Markakis & Aubrey Huff have combined for 96 XBH and a 133 OPS+ this year as the O’s 3-4 hitters (yikes) … still no progress on the Jarrod Washburn front, apparently we bloggers are to blame … Jose Molina has caught all but one game since the break … the last time Moose faced the O’s, it got ugly quick … apparently someone actually wants LaTroy Hawkins on their team…

Update by Joe: Jorge will have surgery on his shoulder, ending his season. At this point, it’s for the better.

The only good thing about a Sidney start is Moose the next day…sorta wash away the grime.

    • Old Ranger says:

Did you see the last game Raz pitched? He did ok to very well, don’t you think? The difference between Ponds and Raz is; If Raz has his control/command he is good…if not, ooops! With Ponds, he will give up hits and walks…no matter what. Big difference! 27/08?

    • Alberto says:

yeah but we get Rasner tommorow!!……our pitching has been so average every single year since the last time we made the world series….NYY team era is always 4.50+ for the year…its no secret/mystery why we cant get out of the first round………

  2. Jamal G. says:

Why aren’t their more rumors about Aubrey Huff? I noted how he was quietly having a damn good, All-Star caliber year a few weeks ago. How are the M’s getting offers for Raul Ibanez instead of Andy McPhail hearing offers for Huff?

  3. Alberto says:

    • Jamal G. says:

The Yanks’ team ERA (3.97) and FIP (3.77) are both under 4.00 this season.

    • Old Ranger says:

This is where it should be not with the 1st post. Sorry LFNY. 27/08?

  4. Jamal G. says:

Per SportsCenter, Jorge Posada will have the season-ending shoulder surgery.

  5. Alberto says:

yeah Jamal, thats with Mussina pitching out of his mind and the bullpen beaing a beast…..for the entire season, we always end up with 4.50+…..average pitching

  6. Alberto says:

this is the problem with Yankee fans…….blinded into thinking the pitching is good……we have no #1 starter!! (that is VITAL in october) we keep playing around with spot starters!! our ERA for the year has been 4.50+ for the season the last 5 years!!

    • Travis G. says:

i’m not sure if you’re being sarcastic.

    • Jamal G. says:

Since 2001 the Yankees have had only two seasons where they have had team ERA’s of 4.50+ over the course of the season. That was in 2004 (4.69) and 2005 (4.52).

      • Alberto says:

        2007= 4.49
        2006= 4.41
        2005= 4.52
        2004= 4.69
        2003= 4.02 (made the WS)
before 2002, we were serious WS contenders because of the deep pitching!

        • Jamal G. says:

Hey, you said 4.50+, I was going by your standards. ;)

Lastly, what do the pitching staffs of previous years have anything to do with the current pitching staff?

          • Rob H. says:

Because jamal, that automatically means that we will have a 4.50+ ERA. it doesn’t matter that our pitching this year has been very good over the whole season. It also doesn’t matter that Mussina is this good because he has adapted to his diminished stuff. It also doesn’t matter that Joba has been basically an Ace with his numbers thus far.

        • Ivan says:

Plus, if yourgonna say Moose has been pitching over his head, then Ican say that Matsuzaka has been lucky all season as well.

        • Hey Alberto:

FWIW, the 1996 and 2000 World Champion New York Yankees had team ERA’s of 4.65 and 4.76, respectively.

  7. Alberto says:

we win 95 games a year and its ALL done on offense……we are always 1st or 2nd in runs scored but middle of the pack in runs allowed………pitching wins championships, its a cliche for a reason!!

    passing on Santana is INEXCUSABLE!!

    • Old Ranger says:

We have hashed that over and over, most people agree with the non-move. Seven year contract plus the players they wanted…No way that was going to fly. 27/08?

      • Alberto says:

ok so then we continue to enter October with no true ACE…..we’ve tried that since CONE retired and it hasnt worked……..good pitching destroys good offense 9 outta 10 times

        • Rob H. says:

Again, Joba is doing just fine and Mussina is pitching great. It isn’t a fluke since he’s done it ALL SEASON. Pettitte is Pettitte and will do his same song and dance and shut down whoever we play in the post season. We will have Wang back and he’ll pitch well too. This year we actually have good pitching so your whole premise is basically negated and all you are clinging too is the past and not comprehending the present success that this team has sustained over the whole season, pitching-wise.

          • Alberto says:

no doubt the pitching has been better so far than previous years…..but again, its SO FAR…..we have no clue what Joba will do the rest of the season, we have no clue what Mussina will do the rest of the season…..our reliable guys are Pettitte and Wang who is on the DL…..pettitte and wang neither are true aces, we’ve tried that and its a guaranteed first round exit

            • Rob H. says:

Gotcha because the first 4 months of the season means nothing and is a complete fluke? That makes perfect sense.

              • Alberto says:

not saying its a fluke….the game of baseball goes thru streaks….extended long streaks……when you have a guy pitching out of his head, like Mussina who has been on decline, you have to be prepared to handle that as a team that wants to be strong going deep into October…..the bullpen has been out of its mind to, all of them are having great years for the first time in their careers…..going into OCT, still no true ace and 2 reliable starters is a big NO-NO……….our ERA for the last 5 seasons has been 4.50

            • Joseph P. says:

And our first round exits had NOTHING to do with the offense not hitting at all.

And you can apply your shoddy logic to any team in the league.

              • Alberto says:

good pitching beats up good hitting!! thats the point!! you need to be able to match other team’s top starters…….name ONE team based on offense that has won it all since the big red machine……….ONE

        • Old Ranger says:

I am not sure but, it seems to me we have gone over that little bit of news also! Everyone knows pitching carries your water. Why do you think we have a plethora of pitchers in the little leagues?
Moose has been going great this year, and will continue to do so. One must remember the way he is now pitching (style) leaves no room for mistakes. If he has a bad day, so be it, every one has them. But now he knows he can bounce back and pitch well the next game. 27/08?

          • Bruno says:

            sorry, was meant for Alberto

          • Alberto says:

love Joba but we have only seen a handful of starts…….if we were truly an OCTOBER built team, we would have Joba as the 4th/5th starter coming out of the bullpen in the postseason…..the same way we had wells, duque as the 4th and 5th

………for a team unlimited in resources, Cashman should have built this starting rotation to look like this: Santana, Tim Hudson, Wang, Pettitte, Joba/Hughes etc……….THATS how you give yourself a GREAT chance on October……….but instead we keep playing with spot starters and unproven people like javy vazquez, contreras, weaver, igawa, pavano, chacon, small, ponson, redding, etc (its too long of a list)

            • Old Ranger says:

Build a starting rotation like that we would end up with;…
$300+mm payroll, NO Minor league, and very little in the way of young position players. In case you hadn’t noticed, our players are old. How can you replace them if you have spent all your money and young guys on the rotation. The supposition that pitching wins ball games, only holds water if you have a defence and avg.(+) hitting. Many of our liabilities of the past few years are being adroitly handled by Cash and his team. If we don’t learn from the past, we die in the future…Cash is changing the face of the Yanks, from a bashing team to a well rounded team. Cash is at the epicenter of many peoples criticism, for not making a deal here and making a deal over there.
The ability of the team to go deep in playoffs is based on (let’s all say it together) pitching, defence and timely hitting. 27/08?

    • Ivan says:

Dude, our offense this year hasn’t been as good as past years.

Our pitching has been holding us down this season especiall with our top three of Joba, Pettitte and Moose. Add the fact our bullpen has been greatespecially since joba left. Our pitching staff is one of the leaders in the AL in SO. The BP #’s are very good as well.

I think this pitching staff has a chance to be even better.

Steve made a good point, this team for a while might be more built for the postseason the regular season.

    • Rob H. says:

You do realize that it’s the pitching that has kept this team where they are this season right? You do realize that taking past performances means jack right now with our pitching going the way it is? Just because we don’t have a #1 starter right now(even though Joba is filling in just fine), we will get Wang back for the final month plus playoffs when/if we make it.

      • Alberto says:

you realize we been down that road before with unknown starting pitching…….we thought we were great using chacon and undefeated Small in the playoffs…….we have a better shot (looks like so far) but still no true ace and going into OCT with 1,2 reliable starters…….Wang would be the #3 starter during the dynasty years

          • Alberto says:

i hope so but we dont know that yet……..you want the NYY to be dominant like they used to be? Make Joba your 4th best starting pitcher…….

            • Newman says:

Chacon won his start and pitched great in game 4 of the ALDS. What are you talking about?

              • Alberto says:

great job! he pitched one good game…….out of the many times we’ve rolled the dice with avg pitching, ONLY 1 of them has pitched a good game in OCT?

              • Alberto says:

go through ALL WS champions the past 10 years and you will notice that it IMPOSSIBLE to win it all without 2-3 starters pitching well in OCT……..the hitting is almost irrelevant

            • Old Ranger says:

Joba is our ACE as of right now, I’ll match him up against anyone. Every game has been better then the last one, will he go undefeated the rest of the way? I hope so, but being a realist I doubt it. Joba as our 4th starter is insulting, to him the ownership and the fans. I think your veracity has been blown to hell. Respectfully, it’s a wast of time debating you…good night to you. 27/08?

    • LiveFromNewYork says:

OH NOT THIS AGAIN. don’t go there. We’ve been over this a million bazillion times. You’re an idiot if you think we’re going there again. Reread all the old threads. Sorry you missed the discussion but that RAB ship has long since sailed. Too bad you were not aboard it when it pulled out of the harbor.

  8. zs190 says:

Those Seattle people sure are funny, 20 teams talking to them about Washburn? he’s on crack. Only a handful of teams can even afford to use 10+ million 4th starters and it sure isn’t anywhere close to 20 teams.

  9. E-ROC says:

What can the Yanks get from the Twins for Hawkins? Jason Pridie?

  10. He's got an Edge says:

Bring up IPK to take Ponson’s spot. Immediately.

p.s. How ugly is the X-Man?

  11. Jamal G. says:

The Angels won the 2002 World Series with Kevin Appier, Ramon Ortiz, Jarrod Washburn, John lackey (rookie season), and Mickey Callaway all making stars in that year. Name me an ace of that group. Jarrod Washburn was their “ace” that year and they won the title.

That “ACE!!1!!” crap is overrated. Gve me a good rotation and I’ll take my chances. With the return of Chien-Ming Wang, I love this rotation.

    • Alberto says:

i love how you had to go ALLL the way back to 2002 to prove a point………that group pitched well and won it all…..they were hot the entire month of OCT, it didnt matter that they weren’t good over their careers……….same with 2006, Marquis, Weaver, Suppan were all hot in OCT and the Cards won it all……..you want to keep going into OCT with average starters and keep rolling the dice without an ace and only 2 good proven starters?

      • Bruno says:

we HAVE an ace. his name is JOBA! welcome to planet Earth.

        • Alberto says:

i hope so but we dont know that yet……..you want the NYY to be dominant like they used to be? Make Joba your 4th best starting pitcher…….

          • Greg G says:

We were actually spoiled in the post dynasty years ( you know when we DIDNT win and the pitchers were better. We werent relying on a guy who was 4-14 with a 6.81 to be an ace) when we had at least 3 potential Aces ( if you include winning the Cy Young, and a guy named Moose who SHOULD have won the Cy Young and another guy who was always up there and winning 20+ games as “aces”) from at least 2001-2003. After 2 of those guys left, we acquired guys who were supposed to be aces and/or being paid as #1s who did not work out ( Johnson, Brown). But it is almost impossible to have 3-4 aces on 1 staff.

Joba as a #4? Well it can’t happen, it’s just not possible. Where are you going to find 3 #1s to slot in front of him? Are there even 3 REAL “Aces” by your rigid criteria in all of baseball? I doubt it. Most of the free agents and trade bait that are so coveted are #4s at best, with the obvious exceptions. If there is pitching to be had most of it is of the medicre variety and not worth trading away anyone of value, let alone multiple major league players.

            • Alberto says:

you are right, pitching is hard to get……….but the past few years all we have seen are aces being shipped around and we stand pat like they are moving bench players………the 5 guys in your rotation are like quarterbacks in football…….you rather have a dominant quarterback than dominant wide receivers right?

              • Alberto says:

santana, hudson, sabathia, wang, pettitte, mussina, hughes, chamberlain…….its not impossible to have 5 aces

  12. DP says:

Karstens is probably starting Friday for the Pirates…

  13. mike pop says:

we gotta win tonight man.. if we won las night that woulda been serious ground // i love the yanks // we need to keep playing 800 ball lol

  14. Joseph P. says:

All right. Game’s starting. Clearly, our new troll has made his point. We apparently are unanimously against him. No need to further acknowledge his logic.

    Wooo! Mooose!

    • Alberto says:

im a bigger Yankee fan than all of you here……..pitching has been average for 5 years making it utterly OBVIOUS why we have been OCT flops….still no true ace…….no hitting-only team has ever won it all since the big red machine…..the yankees and tigers scored ton more runs than anybody else and both teams went nowhere in OCT

  15. Manimal says:

Wow did I miss alot here. I was at friends house sleeping over. Crazy. We played baseball for like 11 hours straight. Yesterday’s game was ugly.

  16. Manimal says:

What did the Bleacher Creatures say during the role call for Nady?

  17. Ivan says:

How similar are Adam Jones and A-Jax, and how different are they?

  18. Manimal says:

wtf? Where did these Trolls come from? I leave for a day and they come back?

  19. Jamal G. says:

    Ok, thank you Orioles.

  20. Manimal says:

See how Nady cut the ball off before the ball hit the wall and it ended up saving a run? Damon take notes.

  21. Yankee1010 says:

I didn’t know that Meachem was the 3rd base coach for the Orioles.

  22. Ivan says:

    What was Samuel thinking?

  23. BigBlueAL says:

Meacham is coaching 3rd for the Orioles too this game????

  24. Ivan says:

Guthrie has the type of stuff that can give us a hard time.

  25. Ivan says:

    That’s A Web Gem.

  26. Ivan says:

Wow Chipper and Hudsonon the DL. Maybe the smart thing to do is trade Texiera.

  27. Ivan says:

It’s always the sucky teams like orioles that give the yanks a hard time.

  28. Mike A. says:

You know, I can’t wait for Kevin Millar to retire.

  29. Yankee1010 says:

    This is going well.

  30. gxpanos says:

They better start scoring next inning, because they owe Moose bad. We can’t expect him to be perfect all the time.

  31. BigBlueAL says:

I didnt know Sidney Ponson was starting tonight as well.

  32. Manimal says:

    Moose is wild. It happens.

  33. Bruno says:

wow I read MLBTR for a few min and 4-0???

  34. Ivan says:

Babe Ruth had a not bad of a season in 1927.

  35. Mike A. says:

So yeah, Alan Horne might have come back a tad too soon.

  36. LiveFromNewYork says:

I was watching the game on Saturday and everyone was screaming that Andy was having a breakdown in the first inning. Yankee fans are nothing if not patient

  37. Mike A. says:

For chrissakes Bobby, the wall is PADDED!!!

  38. Jamal G. says:

In Daisuke Matsuzaka’s first 50-pitches tonight, he has thrown only 30% for strikes. Yet he is only down 1-0 through three innings.

  39. Jamal G. says:

One thing I like is that we are still in this game. The way the team has been playing you can’t be expecting them to just lay down.

  40. Ivan says:

Did you hear that what Oreal H. said? He said the Sox have to bring him back cuz he handles the staff.

  41. Jamal G. says:

How is Nady’s plate discipline? I don’t know if he is just anxious but he has taken some questionable swings in these three games.

    • Ivan says:

well he’s never been known as a guy that walks alot or even being an OB guy. Nevertheless, he maybe trying too hard.

      • Mike A. says:

Yeah, you have to cut him some slack. Friday night he was starting in RF for the Pirates, gets yanked mid-game to find out he’s been traded, flies to Boston Saturday morning, starts in LF for the Yanks at Fenway that night, then goes back to New York Sunday night. Plus his wife just had a kid. Brutal weekend.

He’s human, and he’s just undergone a rather massive life change, so you have to give him a few days to get it together.

  42. Mike A. says:

Mark Kotsay is batting cleanup for the Braves. Mark Kotsay has 27 RBI and a .397 slugging percentage this year. Mark Kotsay is batting cleanup for the Braves.

  43. BigBlueAL says:

Guthrie must be exhausted after the first 3 innings, cant imagine he can last much longer…..

  44. bobtaco says:

Never as good as you look, never as bad as you look, eh guys?

  45. BigBlueAL says:

    answer is David Wells.

  46. Mike A. says:

    Trivia answer = David Wells.

  47. Jamal G. says:

Mike Mussina would be way too easy for the trivia answer, no?

  48. Jamal G. says:

Nope, he lost his only ALCS start against the Yanks.

  49. mike pop says:

you see this shit// red sox interested in acquiring tejada

  50. Ivan says:

Come yanks, lets get something started.

  51. Jamal G. says:

We gotta start chipping away this half-inning.

    *Good start Johnny D.

  52. BigBlueAL says:

    Do i win a prize????

  53. Jamal G. says:

    Honestly, fuck you Jeter.

  54. A.D. says:

CLASSIC JETER, 16 on the season

  55. Ivan says:

I knew Jeter would GIDP. I just had that feeling.

  56. BigBlueAL says:

No words necessary for what just happened.

  57. bklynJT says:

Deter 4-6-3 Jeter does it again!

  58. Jamal G. says:

Come on A-Rod, pick up your Cap’n.

  59. Ivan says:

Jeter stop goingthe other way on pitches that should be pulled. He alwaysgrounds it to the the 2Bman.

  60. gxpanos says:

    I feel an ARod homer.

  61. A.D. says:

It really amazes me how when the Yanks are off Jeter always seems to gidp. He’s gotta be aware of it, you think he’d bunt or something

  62. Jamal G. says:

Jered Weaver sure doesn’t mince words, after a pop-fly falls in for a base hit: “God Dammit, Mother Fuck!”

  63. Newman says:

Theo in his Celtics hat, are you fucking kidding me?

  64. A.D. says:

Hope the yanks are phoning it in after that 2 game streak

  65. Pedro says:

The Yankees are a pretty bad team.

  66. Ivan says:

Hey Moose had a bad outing it happens.

  67. BigBlueAL says:

Well at least we have Rasner going tomorrow….

  68. Mike A. says:

5 walks, 3 outs for Horne tonight. 43 pitches, 16 strikes.

    Yikes.

  69. A.D. says:

At least Horne didn’t start for the big club tonight

  70. Ivan says:

Yankees will this game tonight watch. Big comeback.

  71. Ivan says:

Another thing I gotta say, Jeter looks like Eminem a little bit. seriously he does, if you look closely.

  72. Mike A. says:

Hey look, Nady changed his number.

  73. BigBlueAL says:

I know he is erratic, injury-prone and doesnt deserve the money he is making, but AJ Burnett is so fuckin nasty when he is on it would have to be tempting to try to trade for him….

  74. A.D. says:

Sox looking at Tejada…I don’t get whats wrong with Lowrie?

  75. Jamal G. says:

You’re not in Fenway Park anymore, Melky, you have to put some actual power into these fly-balls.

  76. Jamal G. says:

Why you should never listen to a pitcher: John Maine throws a pitch, the Mets trainers come out and check on him, Maine says “I’m fine, I’m fine”. Very next pitch is yanked for a solo jack. Maine is still in the game though.

  77. A.D. says:

By the way the seattle cloumnist LaRue’s comments are redic. Since I believe it was Buster Olney that orginaly said the trade would basically be cash

  78. Jamal G. says:

Yesterday was definitely one of those games where you are just preordained to lose. Today is just one of those unfortunate losses.

  79. A.D. says:

That play (or lack thereof) by Jeter kinda sums up this game

  80. E-ROC says:

    Angels lead 6-2.

  81. Newman says:

    Thanks Dice-K, lets go Jays

  82. Jamal G. says:

Hey, Torii Hunter just hit a three-run shot at the same exact time as that Grand Slam. Halos lead 6-2.

  83. NYFan50 says:

On the bright side, DiceK has given up 6 runs and both Boston and Tampa are losing.

  84. Bill N says:

I don’t think jones was looking fastball do you ?

  85. Ivan says:

Well if we gonna lose well dammit at least the Rays and Sox will too.

  86. Jamal G. says:

With only one game behind in the Loss column to the Red Sox and three games overall to the Rays, wash games like this don’t hurt at all.

  87. Jamal G. says:

And those Yankee fans who were just booing D-Rob can fuck off.

  88. Ivan says:

    Rough outing for Robertson.

  89. Steve says:

Thats the first HR Dave Robertson has given up playing professional ball.

Picked a hell of a time to do it.

  90. Jamal G. says:

You know this blowout might present a perfect situation, Joe Girardi might use Damaso Marte for a full inning, allowing Marte to prove he to Girardi (if need be) that he can get out any type of hitter.

  91. Manimal says:

Robertson’s era got raped. I still like him. I understand the bad pitching but seriously, one hit?!

  92. Mike A. says:

Just one of those days. Every team has 3 or 4 of these a year.

  93. Ivan says:

These are type of games you miss a guy like Hawkins. Now we gotta use our top pitchers.

  94. Jamal G. says:

Hey Mike, thanks for the tip on “A History of Violence”, I heard about it but never checked it out. I loved it. Joey Cusac is the most bad ass character I have ever seen in a flick since Beowulf.

Just for kicks, you think those scenes between Joey and his wife were “Monster’s Ball” quality, if you catch my drift?

  95. Jamal G. says:

LoL, only the Angels can get five runs on two Home Runs and still score another run on a suicide squeeze play.

  96. giselle says:

wow. i love the angels… suicide squeeze at fenway park. priceless.

  97. Chris says:

Here’s the Dice-K we know and love. 5 Innings and 6 Runs. He struggled down the stretch last year… maybe we’re in for the same this year.

  98. Manimal says:

This game singlehandedly killed the past week of yankees winning.

  99. Jamal G. says:

Big insurance run for the Jays, Joe Inglett’s RBI-3B gives them a 3-1 lead with one out in the bottom of the 8th.

  100. Greg G says:

How many people are going to call for DFA Moose now?

Oh thats right, it takes 3 bad starts for that to happen. Though he must be on a shorter leash because of last season. Maybe its down to 2 now?

  101. Jamal G. says:

Uh-oh, Brian Bruney threw one pitch (HBP) and was promptly taken out of the game.

  102. Newman says:

Rays lose, Theeeeeeeee Rays lose. Hold this lead Angels – it’d be nice to lose 0 ground after such a shiesty loss

  103. A.D. says:

    X is awake

  104. Jamal G. says:

Phil Coke havin a great debut as a reliever tonight.

  105. Manimal says:

X Man to the rescue. I kinda pissed were not going to win with Moose pitching, we need to hope that Rasner will pitch well.

  106. KW says:

Moose got squeezed a ton and the ump is giving the calls to the Os, what the hell!

  107. Mike A. says:

Check out the hustle by Molina.

  108. Jamal G. says:

Time to put Joe’s theory into effect (or is it only the 9th inning?).

  109. A.D. says:

Shame Arroyo is off the market

  110. Pedro says:

    Too little too late Damon

    • Manimal says:

if Girardi took Robertson out and put in Edwar it would be 7-4.(alot of assumptions I know but still)

      • giselle says:

i distinctly remember edwar coming in a 2 out, bases loaded situation and giving up a homer (after a string of good outings) to dioner navarro last year. i do believe he cried after that. why put him in that position again?

        • Chris says:

Different year, different Edwar. So far he’s yet to give up a hit in July…

        • Jamal G. says:

Wasn’t that after Joe Torre didn’t use him for 2.5-weeks?

          • giselle says:

yea youre right, it was his first outing in a while. but he had been pitching really well up to that point. it was horrible, horrible bullpen management by torre…. everyone was wondering why he didnt use edwar, and then he stuck him in that game.

  111. Mike A. says:

Oof. Charleston would have gotten no-hit if Austin Krum didn’t single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

  112. Jamal G. says:

That chic in the red shirt that was drinking the beer was looking at Derek Jeter with those “come hither” eyes.

  113. Pedro says:

Will Sexson ever put the ball in play?

  114. Manimal says:

    Sexson needs a bigger bat

  115. A.D. says:

Finally some offensive life, good to see Damon driving the ball

  116. Mike A. says:

Man, Orel Hershiser just dissed every X-Games athlete ever on the ESPN broadcast: “Do you think they”re athletes, or are they just guys that didn’t play real sports and call themselves athletes?”

    Oof.

  117. Pedro says:

    Horrible night for A-Rod

  118. Jamal G. says:

Did you know that Edwar Ramirez is having a better season than Francisco Rodriguez, statistically?

  119. Jamal G. says:

The Mets’ bullpen fails at life.

  120. Pedro says:

    No surprises with Farnsworth

  121. Mike A. says:

    Wow the Mets’ pen sucks.

  122. giselle says:

ha, who was it on this site that said “Reggie Willits and Howie Kendrick need to change names”. i wanna say it was mike, but i’m not sure…

  123. Jamal G. says:

I like how people just won’t give the credit to the Florida Marlins, they are staying in this people.

  124. giselle says:

man, i want k-rod to earn a save tonight and fist-pump the shit outta the red sox after he records the last out. i really, really want that to happen.

  125. Jamal G. says:

My boy Hanley Ramirez is up with the bases juiced and up one run, oh boy!

  126. Mike A. says:

So my younger brother works and Wendy’s, and he just told me they now have a Baconator shake. I don’t know what a Baconater is, but that sounds NASTY.

  127. Pedro says:

can we get Posada to coach 3rd base for the rest of the year?

  128. Jamal G. says:

    Mets’…bullpen…suuuks.

  129. A.D. says:

At least the whole team is hopefully getting it out of his system tonight

  130. A.D. says:

Wow Rickie Weeks probably blew the game for the Brewers

  131. Pedro says:

Veras has been shaky for the last 3, 4 outings.

  132. Steve says:

And we even have some reserves in the minors. It’s stunning. How much of this can be attributed to Girardi’s handling of the pen? Even Torre’s biggest fans would agree he mishandled the pen regularly. I know it’s not all attributed to Girardi, but some of the same guys are light years better than last year (Farns, Edwar, Veras)

    • Mike A. says:

You can attribute part of it to Girardi, but mostly I just think it’s the general volatility of relievers. You never really know what you’re going to get out of these guys from year to year. That’s what makes what Mo, Hoffman and Wagner so impressive.

      • Steve says:

Agreed, and though relievers are volatile across the league, I think Torre’s overuse/misuse led to extra volatility. Just ask the remains of Scott Proctors right arm. (and I wonder how pissed he is now about last seasons trade to the Dodgers)

        • Mike A. says:

As soon as I found out about that deal, the first thing I thought was “there has to be something wrong with Scott Proctor for them to trade him, right?”

          Sure enough…

  133. [...] the pitching side, let’s play around with this idea. According to long-time RAB reader and frequent commenter Jamal, statistically, Edwar Ramirez is [...]
