Game 85: Another crappy righty we’ve never seen
ByMany teams have rocked Luis Mendoza this year. The Yankees have, in theory, a powerhouse offense. So can we please just knock this guy around? I don’t think it’s asking too much.
MLB.com has a a piece on Talib Kweli, a life-long Yankees fan. Says the emcee: “I collected every baseball card, I had season tickets to Yankee Stadium, but baseball is a great metaphor for life.” I loved his stuff with Mos Def in Black Star.
To keep the game thread filled with randomness, here’s evidence that Joe Buck should no longer be calling baseball games:
Couple of notes from Chad Jennings. Chris Stewart has cleared waivers, of course, and is back with Scranton. Alan Horne is on the DL with what’s being called a tired arm. It doesn’t sound serious. But Shelley Duncan’s shoulder injury does. He could miss the rest of the season.
Your lineup:
1. Johnny Damon, LF
2. Derek Jeter, SS
3. Bobby Abreu, RF
4. Alex Rodriguez, 3B
5. Jason Giambi, DH
6. Jorge Posada, C
7. Robinson Cano, 2B
8. Wilson Betemit, 1B
9. Brett Gardner, CF
And on the mound, number forty-seven, Sir Sidney Ponson

Below Avg Texas pitchers unite Ponson v Mendoza
Maybe, just maybe tonight is the night the Yankee offense hits someone they haven’t seen….though Texas will also probably hit someone they have seen.
I like them too. But I like Gangstarr even more.
Yeah get Joe Buck out of the booth and put Mike Joe and Ben in there for this weekend. I figure even you guys couldnt even be more one side than Joe Morgan and Jon Miller.
If only they put Buck, McCarver, and Morgan together
You can’t leave out Steve Phillips and John Kruk.
The Yankees New Kids on the Block are going down faster then the singing group.
LOL
No constant footage of a spoiled rich kid watching the game, instead, shift the camera to the sulking number 28.
Are you kidding me? You’re going to rag on a 5 year old kid?! The kid looked like he was having a wonderful time. Not to mention, he did something that most adults wouldn’t even think of doing by giving a foul ball to another kid sitting nearby… all on his own mind you.
Bring back Bernie
Ponson DOMINATES teams that cut him…with his recent bouncing around he might be able to make a career out of that
Ugh – here comes the sweep. Our only hope is Sidney gets so shelled he doesn’t come back.
Fat Sid saves the series.
P.S. Kay rips Cano before the game has even started.
Joe Buck is an @sshole, but I’m jealous. He gets paid millions to half @ss his job. Imagine what happens when a military member half @ss his or her job while in Iraq. An utter disgrace!
The Yankees need to pound this SOB into submission. I think Jeter will have a great game because he’ll be pissed about not getting into the last night.
Jeter vs Gardner hit watch is on!
See how many games we see Gardner in CF, or if they’re just giving Melk “the day off”
Joe Buck is lame
Seems like the Sox fans are voting as hard as we are.
Pedroia is still leading in the AS voting…
Joe Buck interview is redic for at least these reasons:
1. No one I have ever talked to likes him as an announcer in football or baseball
2. He doesn’t even work at his job, that like if your a trader not really paying attention what happens to your sector each day, because so many stocks are traded all the time and it’s hard to keep up…that’s how people get fired
3. Says how people don’t have time to watch all the games during the week, but thats because they work….if he watched them it would be work
4. You think if people can’t watch the weekday games then it would be more like “when he was a kid” so Saturday would be more exciting and you would hope the announcers would prepare well and fill you in for the week, but alas, no we have Joe Buck.
Not to be completely negative but after watching Gardner last night I predict he will give up a run on a weak throw tonight in the field.
Classic Ponson, using the whole field to get guys out
BG! Melky would have made that look interesting….
1st Melky shot of the night on YES…
Kay loves to mention the monuments used to be in play
A hit with RISP & 2 outs…am I watching the correct game?
Go Robbie!!
Great, they have to choose the day Ponson’s pitching to get on the board first!
Pickers can’t be choosers
Did Kay just say OH-YAY?!
SO…lame…
Not good
Is it just me or does gardner throw too low.
Not you.
C’mon Ponson!
Part of me is going to be pissed if they give Sidney a win and didn’t give one to Joba or Moose. They both (esp Moose) deserved one. I’m just so pissed at this offense.
I’m afraid that Gardner is just a glorified Bubba Crosby. I hope I’m wrong.
But faster
A little faster maybe – Bubba was pretty quick. I think Gardner has much better plate discipline though – he ran up a full count almost every time which was great to see (as opposed to the swing at the first pitch thing the vets have bought into lately).
I had the same thought last night actually. Don’t get me wrong – his AAA stats are incredible but I just don’t get a good feeling. Same not good feeling I got from Hawkins and everyone jumped on me here before clamoring for him to be DFAed.
He has a cult of personality around here.
pedroia would’ve had that
the best chance they have at scoring is giambi drawing a walk…
THANK GOD. FINALLY
Beast mode
grand salami
the SLAMBINO
Well that was sorely needed!
i’m growing a moustache
Hamilton really likes new York… anyone know when his contract is up? I guess with this past year his salary will spike and the Rangers won’t want anything to do with him. I’d rather have him than abreu.
he’s not going anywhere. he’s got years to go in Texas, and i think all three arb eligible years to go yet.
I think Jamal is Giambi.
Giambi is my homeboy.
nice DP by cano
Good quick inning by Ponson.
If only Cano could have hit better earlier in the year.
He definitely has an all-star glove (when he’s paying attention).
Pat Venditte rule.

Hold the lead Ponson!
Rather be lucky than good is Ponson’s motto.
Joba Sunday nite versus the Red Sux! I’m chillin’ my beers now!
…. and I’m not in Florida, so I can drive!
c’mon Giambino, take advantage of another error!
The Yanks should bomb Benoit.
Cano is hitting and his luck still sucks
Disregard. Hoping posting gets me off mobile version.
It worked.
Hank told Mussina to start “pitching like Jamie Moyer” and Moose turned his season around right after that.
Hank was quoted yesterday as saying “This is getting ridiculous” with the Yankee offense, and they break out in a big way tonight.
Hank is a genius.
Take out ponson Girardi.
Wow, the blow finally came…
MOTHER****ER!!!!
Why wouldn’t just go to your bullpen Girardi? ugh.
Too little too late, Mr Girardi.
Literally no excuse for Ponson still being in this game.
Thanks for stopping by Ponson, your parting gifts will be waiting outside the clubhouse.
WHY IN THE WORLD would you leave him in for that long.
You gotta wonder some times, thousands of baseball fans would have taken him out while only Joe Girardi would keep him in.
Well it just seem all year can’t get two things right. good pitching bad offense, good offense bad pitching.
Thats a sign of a 500 team.
Girardi looks worse as the day passes…
Ponson was already winning the game, why not take him out?
When are they seriously going to get involved in the trade market. If they are going to make Kennedy earn a spot again, and Hughes is a month away, I wouldnt mind seeing something done. I know the big names might not be there until July 31 but Cashman needs to get moving on something. They cant have Ponson Geise and Rasner in this rotation. And all that being said why has Bedard (only according to rumors) been ruled out, he seems to be the perfect buy low/high reward candidate.
The only thing I can think of was Giese and Robertson already pitcher yesturday and he didnt trust latroy.
Gardner finally drew a walk.
GIDP Jeter strikes again.
Everytime Jeter comes up with runner on 1st, I always think DP.
So sad it has come to this.
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!!!!! WHERE WAS THE FUCKING BUNT!!!! WHAT THE FUCK!!!
Your not Serious right?
I’m talking about bunting Damon.
You don’t bunt there.
You could argue Damon shouldve bunted. Even though I agreed with him not bunting, but is has gotten to the point with Girardi where every move/non-move he makes backfires.
It just seem the yanks are snake bit. Alot bad luck so far with this and of course poor exucution.
Hankenstein is going to be one unhappy puppy.
sigh
Hope this shuts Pete up about Edwar for at least one day.
Pete has been never been an Edwar fan.
I think I went deaf.
Also one more thing, Matsuzaka is a lucky bastard. This guy every time I look at his #’s the guy has 3-5 BB a start. Yet people get mad when I said Pettitte is better than Matsuzaka right now.
I know I’m just a pissed off fan but seriously does Girardi have a clue ? I know its the players job to perform but they have to be put in a postion to and with that said the skipper hasn’t done much of that thus far.
Lets see if we can get this run in
If they dont score this inning, im shooting myself…
If they dont win this game, im shooting myself…
The juice is loose
Thank you 25
Giambi continues to amaze me!!!
And I actually suggested he shave a few days ago.
Remember when people actually thought that Duncan was a better option than Giambi.
Thank you Ron Washington, tonight you are actually managing worse than Joe Girardi as hard as that is to do. Actually let me re-phrase that, managing just as bad..
Seeing this, I appreciate Robertson’s performance against the Mets the other day even more.
Cano maybe not hitting likehe should but after watching Kisler not make that play, it shows how Cano is better defensively than most second baseman.
Gardner’s first hit is an RBI single. Clutch!
Congrats Gardner.
Wow, the Texas pitcher, Madrigal, has an ERA of 135.00. No that is not a typo. 135!!!!!
Gardner doing everything at once: H, RBI, R.
Well it wasn’t a double play
Jeter… that would have been another DP…
It’s Latroy Hawkins for 2 innings time.
The Yanks offense was due for something like this.
anyone else just see that confrontation between melky and Arod? What was going on there?
I saw that too. Couldn’t tell if Arod was messing around or not.
What confrontation?
it looked like melky was congratulating damon first and arod pushed melky and gave him a stern talking to.
I dont know if I should be happy Boston is gonna get swept vs Tampa or scared that all this does is give Tampa even more confidence and allows them to remain a whopping 8 games ahead of the Yankees in the loss column.
We should think about wildcard first, then the east.
i hope a-rod goes on one of those ridiculous tears from last year where he hits 7 hrs in 5 games.
No better time than the next 6 games coming up!!!!
What are you guys talking about. They’re tight with like a mentor/trainee relationship.
Farnsdearth walks the first batter. Shocking!
Yankees score 9 as red sox choke.
What a great day!
Gardner gets his first hit, Edwar performs well, and now Red Sox loses!!!
Brett Gardner. Stay strong buddy.
He frigging went .
Farnsworth didn’t make it interesting. That idiot ump made it interesting.
and now comes the commercial I hate.
7-4 rays!
FINALLY, Jeter gets his hit.
HAHAHHAHA IT HIT OFF HER HEAD
This is nice, but I hope they save some for tomorrow.
87 runs tonight. What do they save it up and give their shitty pitcher a win and screw the good guys.
By shitty pitcher do you mean Edwar? He’s done well this season and will get the win
I hope this isn’t an anomaly.
I love late-inning defensive downgrades
A good day for Karstens
Good for him, he could take Ponson’s spot.
I’m hardly a Karstens supporter, but yeah, I think he’s earned a shot.
So, the Yankees take 3 out of 4 from the Sox this weekend and are right in the thick of the wild card race? I like it!
The Sox’s pen is pretty weak. That’s the key…get in to that pen. That could really be a difference maker in this series. It would also help if Jeter could stop hitting grounders to 2B.
Kweli has let his Yankee love show in the past:
“As far as days go this look like an amazing one, I feel more normal in the summer than saying the Yankees won, it’s like: ‘Of course! what, you expect less?’”
Buck is far from perfect, but to be fair, he is the only thing keeping that duo more or less in the neighborhood of planet earth.
My kudos to Dustin Pedroia for having 4 XBH tonight against the Rays. He’s turning it on and making his selection over Kinsler less and less of a travesty (although it still is).
But…
Karl Ravech on ESPN Baseball Tonight, 12:16 am EST:
“Dustin Pedroia, up again, needs only a single for the cycle, but he’s not thinking about his stats, he gets the double instead…”
What a goddamn selfless, classy, gritty, gutty, hard-nosed, all-american super-gamer Dustin Pedroia is. He could have had the single, but, NO, he’s going to say “Fuck my own stats, I’m going to get a double because it will help my team more… DAMN, I’m such a great guy! No selfish Yankee would ever do something like this, especially that assbag Derek Jeter… he’d stop at first. I’m the MAN, but that’s not important… Only the team is important.”
I’m with you, Ravvy… Pedroia is awesome. Put him in Cooperstown, Canton, and Springfield right now, no point in waiting. I’d let him fuck my mother, but he probably wouldn’t because he’s not interested in his own stats.
I’d trade John Sterling, Micheal Kay and Melky Cabrera for a Hoss Clarke jersey. Even that would help the Yanks: addition by subtraction. And maybe they could get that annoying, “Hey! It’s Derek Jeter!” kid to throw out the first ball sometime. None of this makes sense, I just think I’m funny right now but maybe I’m not. This season is such a drag.
