Game 93: How aboot a win?

By Mike Axisa

This looks like the best lineup the Yanks can field these days, and they’re going to need it against Doc up in Canadia.

1. Gardner, LF
2. Jeter, SS
3. Abreu, RF
4. A-Rod, 3B
5. Giambi, DH
6. Posada, C
7. Cano, 2B
8. Betemit, 1B
9. Melky, CF

And pitching, the Winnebago Wonder, Joba Chamberlain.

TurnTwo says:

you know, i totally forget Cito Gaston was the manager in Toronto again.

Joey H says:

him and his tanning salon lmao and he burt reynolds stachee

alex says:

nasty pitch to abreu by halladay

A.D. says:

Gotta love Gardner’s speed

TurnTwo says:

and by the way, i hope the YES network execs are listening to how nice it sounds in the booth without Kay.

its like a whole new ballgame.

Yankee1010 says:

Let’s hope Joba can make 1 run hold up against the AAAA lineup that the Jays are running out there. I could not have less faith in the Yanks actually scoring more than 1 run against Halladay the way they are going.

Jamal G. says:

Outside of Rod Barajas, “AAAA lineup” isn’t a stretch. Wow.

Yankee1010 says:

Nice. Already 0-3 with RISP. Good stuff. Good stuff.

BigBlueAL says:

Gardner on 2nd with No outs and the 2-4 hitters up…..and naturally Gardner cant even advance a base let alone score.

A.D. says:

Chances are the bats don’t get going vs the Doc

BigBlueAL says:

Obviously Im not expecting a scoring barrage vs Halladay cause he is a freakin stud but cmon you have a runner on 2nd with 0 outs and Jeter, Abreu and Arod up shit you can score that fuckin run w/o a hit. But of course not….

Yankee1010 says:

Right now, they wouldn’t have much of a chance against Rudy Stein.

BigBlueAL says:

Let alone Carmen Ronzonni.

Yankee1010 says:

Before or after Mike Leak tweaked his mechanics?

BigBlueAL says:

After he cut the Warren Spahn/Catfish Hunter bullshit and just stuck to being Carmen Ronzonni.

Mike A. says:

Yeah, Doc’s on his game tonight.

TurnTwo says:

and you know how frustrating it is to know that the Jays threw out their AAA lineup tonight, but with Doc on the mound, we could still lose this 2-1?

alex says:

do you guys think girardi is going to reshuffle the starting rotation after the all star break? if so what order from 1-5 do you guys think the starters will lineup? i was thinking andy, moose, joba, rasner, ponson………..i was just wondering because i am planning on getting tickets to the oakland series and would like to see joba’s start.

A.D. says:

I think theyd split up so
andy
Joba
ponson
moose
rasner

something like that….I’m going to the first game after the break so I figure I have to have a good pitcher

Mike A. says:

WTF? How is there a runner on second already?

Mike A. says:

Ah, it was a mistake.

Jamal G. says:

YES was just rubbing it in their viewers’ faces that the Yankees could not bring home a runner on second base with nobody out.

Jamal G. says:

Clay Buchholz has given up two runs in the first, so much for the theory that the Red Sox somehow develop young starters far and away better than the Yanks.

Jamal G. says:

Buchholz was topping out at 96-97MPH in the first inning, I always thought his max effort would result in 94-95MPH.

Mike A. says:

Oi, 29 pitches, 11 strikes. 3 walks in the first.

TurnTwo says:

i was actually at the Clemens game he started in Trenton, and coincidentially enough, Buchholz was the opposing pitcher that day.

he’s a friggin bean pole… and his curveball was awesome to watch live.

Jamal G. says:

I’ve read conflicting reports on his thrid best pitch. Which is it, the Changeup or Slider?

TurnTwo says:

i dont recall seeing him throw many, if any, sliders that night, so i’m guessing primarily a changeup… but i dont know for certain.

Yankee1010 says:

Betemit moves like an amputee in the field.

zzzzz says:

HEY!

….don’t insult people with disabilities like that.

Jamal G. says:

Coming into today’s action, Melky Cabrera is tied with Adam Jones (.929) for the second best (Carlos Gomez with a .937% is first) Zone Rating amongst Center Fielders in the A.L. Does that dispel the notion that he takes bad routes as of this stage in his career or is that stat not “good” enough to argue that point?

TurnTwo says:

but… but… melky sucks!

Chris says:

Just because he has a good zone rating doesn’t necessarily mean he takes good routes. Imagine how good he could be if he took good routes to the ball…

cult of basebaal says:

no. he’s taken bad routes to routine balls in this game.

Jamal G. says:

Yankees are working some deep counts, but with this rubber armed dude on the mound it might not matter.

TurnTwo says:

thats true, but Halladay, when he’s on, pounds the strike zone anyway. you arent gonna work him deep into too many counts.

alex says:

why dont the jays trade halladay?

Mike A. says:

Yeah. They’re fucked. Doc’s got it all working.

Mike A. says:

Go figure, Cano’s the one that works the 3-0 count.

Mike A. says:

And now the 4 pitch walk. What a game.

alex says:

a 4 pitch walk to cano!?!?!?!?!?!

BigBlueAL says:

Holy Shit!!!!!!! Cano drew a walk off Roy Halladay!!!!!!!!

TurnTwo says:

perhaps its just me, but does Roy Halladay look like that weird uncle guy who lived next door to Tom Hanks in ‘The ‘burbs’ to anyone else?

Jamal G. says:

Four straight strikeouts against guys like Bobby Abreu, Alex Rodriguez, Jason Giambi, and Jorge Posada is followed by a four-pitch walk to Robinson Cano. I love baseball.

Jamal G. says:

Heh, how ironic is that T-Mobile comercial now that Brett Favre has basically announced he’s coming back?

Mike A. says:

He asked for his release today so he could sign with another team.

J! E! T! S! JETS JETS JETS!

TurnTwo says:

no chance. if he’s smart, his best shot is in Minnesota, right?

Jamal G. says:

Green Bay has the say whether he is released or not. If there is even the slightest inclination that he could be signed within the NFC North there is no way the Packers would grant him his release. Then of course Favre’s agent and the NFL Player’s Union might get involved but that’s another story.

TurnTwo says:

i would imagine it would be in the best interest for GB to actually trade him somwehere rather than give him his outright release, because of this.

A.D. says:

Well he signed what was essentially a lifetime contract…so that will be odd

Jamal G. says:

A Yankee and Jets fan? Max Kellerman was right, that is a bit odd. I thought most Yankee fans were Giants fans and vice versa with the Mets and Jets.

TurnTwo says:

oddly enough, my fiance is a Giants and Mets fan.

Jamal G. says:

My long time girlfriend finds the game of baseball “silly”, I envy you. ;)

TurnTwo says:

ha! its fun. we go to one subway series game a season, and alternate the home parks year to year.

Jamal G. says:

Heh, I only have one girl friend that actually can be considered a real fan of baseball, luckily she is a Yankee fan.

(Comments wont nest below this level)
Jamal G. says:

Oh, and her name is Annelis RODriguez, we have way too much fun with that. :D

Mike A. says:

You know the best way to weed the good ones out from the bad? Take her to a baseball game on the first date.

Fullproof, my friend.

A.D. says:

My gf isn’t that fan of watching on TV but likes going to the ballpark….so I’m forced to get tickets

TurnTwo says:

i aint sayin she a gold digger… but she aint messin with no broke, broke, uh!

Chris says:

My wife is a Red Sox fan… first date was to a Yankees-Red Sox game…

A.D. says:

Well I’m a Packers & Yankees fan…..so what does that make me

Jamal G. says:
BigBlueAL says:

Not as spoiled as us Giants & Yankees fans!!!!

Mike A. says:

God, that Cuddle Bear commercial annoys the shit out of me.

Mike A. says:

That Smile of the Game chick was pretty hot.

Smitt Dog says:

Agreed. She may have barely been 18 though.

pat says:

smile of the game is an excuse to show a hot girl coney is gonna ball tonight

Mike A. says:

Man. They have no shot tonight.

Jamal G. says:

LoL, a First base Umpire just called Julio Lugo out at first base. He was actually lifting his foot off the bag when the ball arrived in the glove of Brian Burress.

alex says:

WOW! Chad Moeller just sits there on the bench all day…………dosent even sit next to anyone

TurnTwo says:

so 3rd catcher = backup QB = the best gig in the country?

Mike A. says:

‘Bout damn time they let Lind play everyday.

First strikeout in the Phil Hughes’ career, Adam Lind.

Jamal G. says:

Mike, was it you who posted a story about taking a girl to a baseball game and she was just a pain in the ass? I can’t for the life of me remember if a friend of mine told me that or I read that somewhere.

TurnTwo says:

hmm, so who is the everyday catcher on this team?

i know.. i kid, i kid.

well, kind of.

A.D. says:

What was Posada doing?

Mike A. says:

They’re going to get no-hit tonight. I feel it in me bones.

So why was Jose Molina catching everyday? Oh that’s why…

claybeez says:

Mike A. says:

Eckstein didn’t grit enough in that at-bat.

TurnTwo says:

although he certainly hustled back to the dugout. what a champion.

pat says:

jeets gonna throw away a dp ball

Jamal G. says:

Are the California Angels, Anaheim Angels, and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim considered three teams in baseball history?

A.D. says:

Ivan says:

Toronto leading the league in GIDP, well Jeter would certainly fit with that team.

A.D. says:

Whats with Joba giving up 2 strike hits tonight

TurnTwo says:

Joba : inducing double plays :: yankees offense : getting hits with RISP

Ivan says:

Down 1-2, and you call for a fastball.

Ivan says:

Could of, would of, should of, Kenny that is this yankee team is what it is.

Smitt Dog says:

I hate it when Cone calls him “Singy”.

BigBlueAL says:

Not a knock on Joba so dont go ripping me Im just saying in almost every start he has a stupid inning like this one.

pat says:

definately.. and he ends up throwing like 30 pitches and only lasts until the 5th

Mike A. says:

Pat Hentgen and Mr. Roger Clemens are the answers to the trivia question.

Ivan says:

I know the answer to the trivia question. It’s Roger Clemens and Pat “I stole Pettitte CY Young” Hentken.

A.D. says:

how deep were they playing arod??

TurnTwo says:

wow that line drive had some crazy knuckle action.

Mike A. says:

That was Giambi’s pitch.

A.D. says:

yup, if they’re not going to hit Halladay’s mistakes they have even less of a chance

TurnTwo says:

oofah, tough night for Heredia.

Mike A. says:

BigBlueAL says:

Hey Jamal have u seen Bucholz since the 1st inning, 0 runs 1 hit 5 K’s

Jamal G. says:

Yeah, his stuff is absolutely nasty tonight.

A.D. says:

Has anyone heard what it would take to get McPherson from the Marlins?

Mike A. says:
A.D. says:

Well if his back is healthy, worth a look as a solid corner inf platoon guy…he’s never really gotten a healthy shot at the minors

A.D. says:

that should say healthy shot at the majors

TurnTwo says:

i havent followed him at all this season, but there is prob a reason at this point why he hasnt gotten said chance yet…

pass.

A.D. says:

well he’s hitting over .300 & leads milb in HR..but Cantu has held him off

TurnTwo says:

hmm… well he cant be any worse than what we currently are running out there.

hes a 1B/3B, right?

wait, well then forget about it, now that i think about it… thats what we have betemit for.

Smitt Dog says:

I think he can be a valuable bat off the bench. The threat of his power in a pinch hiting scenario might be worth taking a look at.

Jamal G. says:

You know things aren’t going well when you walk to your kitchen then back and the inning is over.

BigBlueAL says:

I remember the good old days when the Yankees would take it as a challenge when they faced a great pitcher and would grind out tough ab’s and eventually always find a way to get some runs and win the game….

Jamal G. says:

They’ve had some real good ABs in this game. Not much you can do when Doc Halladay is on his shit though.

Jon says:
TurnTwo says:

maybe for the Yankees, its not a “real” offensive recession, but a “mental” offensive recession…. its just a figment of our minds that they cant score runs.

Jon says:

That really has nothing to do with what I said, but ok…

He still whines a lot.

Ivan says:

Yankees need a spark. Not Brett Garner, but like young big time prospect coming up spark. Like Cano did in 05.

A.D. says:

Well then we’ll be getting a spark potentially in late 2009,more like 2010

A.D. says:

Ivan says:

I predict the yankees will score in this top half inning.

pat says:

A.D. says:

Ugh pop up bunt come on BG….like the idea, hate the execution

BigBlueAL says:

I know Melky aint a good bunter, but shit WTF is Gardner then……

Ivan says:

Did people really believe that Garner was the Answer.

Smitt Dog says:

Jetes needs a day off, or something. His approach just looks terrible right now, like hes fighting off pitches even in a hitters count.

A.D. says:

I wonder how many time Jeter records an out that probably would have been a dp if a runner was on

Jamal G. says:

Tampa looks to be on their way to a fifth straight loss and Boston is tied at 3-3 while Baltimore has the go-ahead run on third base with nobody out. So hopefully if things don’t work out tonight we can avoid losing ground tonight. I hate scoreboard watching before August but screw it.

Mike A. says:

Phew, just missed. Oh wait, that hit me? Oh yeah, ouch, dammit.

Smitt Dog says:

Why send Abreu in that situation?

Mike A. says:

I think he went on his own.

Jon says:

If he makes it, cool runner on second.

He gets caught you still have A-Rod up and have erased the 0-2 count.

Ivan says:

because A-Rod’s down 2 strikes and sending Abreu was pretty much little risk.

Jamal G. says:

Perfect throw, you could question running with A-Rod up and two down but was getting a RISP such a bad idea?

Mike A. says:

With A-Rod at the plate, first base is scoring position.

BigBlueAL says:

A-Rod had a better chance getting a hit with Abreu on 1st rather than 2nd since 1st base isnt technically in scoring position and 2nd base is….

TurnTwo says:

not when you need to force the issue on a night like tonight.

good idea, bad execution.

BigBlueAL says:

Oh Bucholz is struggling in the 5th inning, he sucks again!!!! Love messin with you Jamal but your my boy I luv ya….

pat says:

at least arod is gonna lead off the inning

Ivan says:

well at least Joba’s pitching well.

TurnTwo says:

peace the motha f’n out… no doubt about that one.

pat says:

ivan kiss of death

Jamal G. says:

Aubrey Huff is quietly, quietly having a damn good season. Vital line of .288/.351/.537 with a 134-OPS+, 28-2B, and 18-HR.

TurnTwo says:

what kind of contract does he have left in Balt?

BigBlueAL says:

I think A-Rod leads the league in Infield Flyouts.

BigBlueAL says:

Nice patient inning so far.

Mike A. says:

It’s always good when A-Rod and Giambi are retired on 2 pitches total.

Mike A. says:

Rock ‘n Rohlendorf with a night and a half.

TurnTwo says:

wow, you’re not kidding. thats a good sign.

BigBlueAL says:

Halladay might not be able to come back out for the 8th inning after that tough 7th inning he just endured.

kunaldo says:

this blows ass chunks

Will says:

Six pitches? This is how we expect to win?

A little of that famed Yankee plate discipline would be super right about now.

Jamal G. says:

It is certainly understandable why a lot of the runs you’ve seen scored thus far off Joba Chamberlain (as a starter) have been because of dink and dunk innings. I mean damn.

TurnTwo says:

joba’s doing his part.

Mike A. says:

Joba’s strike to ball ratio is just filthy.

BigBlueAL says:

Wow forgot Traber was still with the Yankees.

Mike A. says:

Gotta have that lefty, you know?

pat says:

im liking how joba is locating his curveball very well

Ivan says:

Hey when guys like Jeter, Abreu and Posada and Cano are not hitting, you tend to struggle offensivley.

TurnTwo says:

thats really embarrassing.

Jamal G. says:

…You have no idea, ugh.

BigBlueAL says:

When it rains it pours…….

Mike A. says:

Good thing Girardi’s taking Joba out, he was having a rough go of it. Joe Inglett, man is he a dangerous hitter.

Will says:

Mike A. says:

79 strikes, 29 balls? Holy shit.

Jamal G. says:

I know, could not believe it myself. Earned Runs aside, best start of his Major League career.

A.D. says:

redic, gotta love the no walks

Kelvin says:

agreed. 0bb, 9ks. good good good

Jamal G. says:

You know what I hate about this move, all the idiots are going to still say that “JOBAHR CAN’T GIVE YOU SEVEN!!!111!!”

BigBlueAL says:

who is Jobahr??? maybe he can give us 7 cause Joba so far hasnt been able to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LMFAO

pat says:

mike francesa says jabher

BigBlueAL says:

Peter Vecsey does the same thing with alot of basketball players names.

cult of basebaal says:

FUCK YOU, JOBHAR! I DO IT MYSELF!!!

BigBlueAL says:

Your trying to tell me Jesus Christ cant hit a curve ball!!

Mike A. says:

What. the. fuck. was. that.

Now they’re just showing off.

BigBlueAL says:

Wow the Blue Jays are just fuckin toying with us now.

A.D. says:

alex says:

the fuck are they jays doing out there?

Jamal G. says:

Austin Jackson is 3-for-3 with a RBI so far tonight.

BigBlueAL says:

Well at least the Knicks start their Summer League on Monday……

Ivan says:

This offense suck ass

pat says:

its like theyre the globetrotters and we’re the nationals watch out for eckstein hitting arod with the bucket o confetti

Mike A. says:

Girardi needs to mix up the lineup, that’s all he can do at this point.

Abreu-Jeter-Giambi-ARod-Cano-Posada-Betemit-Melky-Gardner

Jamal G. says:

Jeter-Abreu-Emmanuel-Giambi-Posada-Cano-Betemit-Melky-Gardner

At this point Bobby Abreu is not giving you much better OBP skills than Derek Jeter so Abreu’s power will be more of use seeing those Fastballs in front of A-Rod. You could go back-to-back with Giambi and Cano but I know these managers are sticklers for keeping the lineup balanced.

Ivan says:

Garner and Melky shouldn’t bein this lineup.

A.D. says:

put it in the books, gameover…..classic Traber

BigBlueAL says:

I hope this is the last time we see Traber in a Yankees uniform.

Will says:

Hey, at least that third run Joba gave up isn’t a big deal anymore.

Man, this sucks.

pat says:

and this is why i forgot billy traber was on the roster

Ivan says:

Man I miss Mike Stanton (when he was in his prime Stanton)

beezr says:

Aren’t lefties hitting in the high .300’s off Traber? Isn’t this a known fact? Man this lefty thing is so ingrained and Girardi seems to have it bad.

Ivan says:

To be fair it’s either him or Hawkins.

pat says:

can we get an early dof so i can be happy about something before i start drinking?

A.D. says:

People noted before

AJAX 3-3

Ohille, good start (5 inning 4 hits 0 runs)

you can work off that

timthefork says:

why does this team continue to carry 13 pitchers, when 2 of them are hawkins and traber.

meanwhile….the bench tonight (with melky and brett in the lineup 2 guys you’d obviously pinch hit for)\\

is

Chad Moeller
Jose Molina
justin christian

13 pitchers is an ambarrasment

Ivan says:

This has been tough year for the yankees, whether it’s injuries, underperformance and bad luck. Nevertheless, they can certainly turn it around.

A.D. says:

Halladay has the old .25 WHIP going tonight

Jamal G. says:

Turn Two, Aubrey Huff has $8-Million on his 2008 deal, same for 2009. People are saying the Orioles won’t deal George Sherrill so I can’t see how they would deal Aubrey Huff if that is true.

Jamal G. says:

Bet you won’t hear anybody complaining about a meaningless Double by Derek Jeter in tomorrow’s papers. $100 say that if A-Rod hits a dinger that’s all you’re going to hear about.

Mike A. says:

At least Aaron Heilman is melting down again. That’ll make me feel good.

Ivan says:

Dammit wish it was Wagner.

BigBlueAL says:

Didnt Roberto Kelly once break-up a Dave Stieb No-Hitter in the 9th inning back in the day??? I think I remember as a little kid watching that and being excited that the Yankees got a hit.

timthefork says:

didn’t steib go into the ninth with no hitters in back to back starts too??

BigBlueAL says:

I remember that he was the king of losing no-hitters before I think he finally threw one.

pat says:

of course now we make him work

Jamal G. says:

You know what’s scary, this division is only going to get better.

timthefork says:

he did. in 1989 lost no-nos with 2 outs in the ninth in back to back starts. wow!!

BigBlueAL says:

In 1990 he did get his no-hitter at Cleveland. Was that Yankees game part of that back-to-back starts???

Jamal G. says:

Isn’t there a rule that says 100 foul balls equals an out?

timthefork says:

whoops 1986 he pitched a no no in 89

BigBlueAL says:

I just looked it up the game i was referring to in Toronto in August when Kelly did break up the no-hitter with 2 outs in the 9th but it wound up as a 2-hitter cause Steve Sax drove him in with a hit right after. Apparently also that season Steib threw a 1-hitter at Yankee Stadium in April but it wasnt a no-hitter broken up late in the game (broken up in the 5th inning). Shit.

Ivan says:

Well we will get em next time.

Mike A. says:

FYI – not a single one of the MiL games is close to over yet, so DotF is still a ways away…

Flynn says:

2 goddamn hit? 2 goddamn hits?

This is a joke, right? Please tell me this is a joke.

zzzzz says:

halladay is no joke.

Joey H says:

i know i wasnt laughing. i can honestly say he is NASTY if you read my link i make some good points a bout his pitches.
