  • A.D.

Anyone know what Hughes was throwing, mainly fastballs or some breaking balls? Believe I saw a commenter in the game thread say he used a slider

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Fastballs mainly, radio people said he broke off a couple nasty Sliders.

      • Steve

        Oooooooohhhhhh! Really?

Maybe a return to the fastball/slider pitcher he was when he came up and the 3/4 arm angle Carlos Gomez and a gazillion other people have written about!

    • Patrick S

I was at the game, and Hughes threw ‘mostly’ fastballs. I’m not so sure about ‘nasty’ sliders…his breaking ball and off speed stuff didn’t seem that sharp but that is to be expected. His fastball sat at 93 for the first 2 innnings…I didn’t see one that wasn’t 93 on the scoredboard, in his 3rd inning he had a 91 and 92.

Pavano, othoh, managed to ‘hit’ 89 w/his fastball. Also, mostly 88 and some 87. Pavano was pretty successful with his breaking ball, finishing I believe all his strikeouts that way…cut me a little slack, as it was raining and impossible for me to keep score, so I had to rely on memory.

  • DP

In all honesty, we might see Pavano before Hughes. I think if things get desperate with the 4 or 5 spot, they’d be more willing to have Pavano go out there too early in his recovery and get rocked than Hughes. With Pavano there is 0 expectation so they would save face in that instance.

    • Steve

Yeah, Cashman has said its most likely Hughes will spend the rest of the year at AAA. He needs to work on a few things. But when it comes to pitching, you never know.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing him used out of the bullpen if we get to the playoffs. Worked pretty well last year.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

The starter against SWB, Ricky Romero, not only has never posted an ERA under 4.89 in Double-A, but J.P. Riccardi picked him over Troy Tulowitzki (6th overall, 2005 Draft).

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

And Mike Pelfrey (9). And Cam Maybin (10). And Andrew McCutchen (11). And Jay Bruce (12). And Jacoby Ellsbury (23). And Matt Garza (25). And Colby Rasmus (28). And Clay Buchholz (42) …

      • Manimal

        what a draft

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

          Best of the decade, easily.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

It’s been called a draft for the ages by many.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

        …And Austin Jackson (259). ;)

        • A.D.

          Are people forgetting Craig Hansen??

          • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

No, we’re just listing the players that are, you know, GOOD.

        • Guiseppe Franco

          Don’t forget C. J. Henry!

  • A.D.

If only Hacker hadn’t missed some 2.5 years with arm trouble

  • Manimal

Tell Ben that his tickets are on sale at stub hub for about 78$

    • Manimal

      nvm, 100$

  • felixpanther

if Pavano pitches well, Cashman will consider to sign him again…. just kidding!

  • Reggie C.

Pavano getting paid 10M to pitch in Late July at Low-A ball. Wow. Life is good.

  • Bart

nees to be soon — Blame Giradi for sending Rasner out in the 7th — or Rasner for putting two men on walk and HBP

The offense can’t overcome the pitching whne it implodes and barely support the pitching when it is nealy perfect

what was with the starting lineup

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

God Dammit, I’m tired of Sony. Every damn time they have some new system update to download for the PS3. Ugh.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Yeah, it’s a pain in the ass. Plus those things don’t exactly take 30 second either.

Oh, I ended up trading for Manny Parra, Greinke and Shields were too expensive. Got Dave Dellucci for a song to my platoon LHB LF.

      • Manimal

seriously, you think its FINALLY over, and it freaking has to install.

      • BigBlueAL

Hey Mike you playing a franchise just vs the computer or in an online league?? I find the computer being way too easy this year, even when playing on HOF.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Hah, really? I suck. I play my franchise on All-Star and I’m maybe 5 games over .500.

I don’t play online anymore because a) everyone picks either the Yanks on Sox, b) they unplug when they’re about to lose, and c) half the people have choppy connections.

I will straight up house you with Harden though.

          • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

It’s funny though, last game I played online, I played some dude who used the Indians, I used the Reds. Great game, like the 15th inning, I took the lead in the top half, he came back to win the bottom half. I went like, 4 innings with Cordero, and he finally burnt out on me.

            • BigBlueAL

Playing online is frustrating because of the connect issues and people quitting in the first few innings. Plus as you said I cant ever use the Yankees unless the other person is either the Red Sox or Tigers (I mustve face Verlander at least a few times already). Plus some games take way too long. I think Im 11-3 which shows you I havent played hardly any games online at all since the first week I got the game. Still BEST baseball game ever I think, even better than MVP 2005 which I still have and play on occasion since thankfully I have the original 60 GB version which plays PS2 games. Sucks for the people buying the newer PS3’s which dont play PS2 games….

          • http://www.blogtalkradio.com/baseballdigestdaily Eric SanInocencio

If anyone wants to play me in the Show, look me up. EricSanSan is my ID name. We should start a league, that would be awesome.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Good deal, I really like Parra.

        Who’d you give up?

It’s a pain in the ass playing with Oakland, they have nobody to trade so that I can even start rebuilding. Huston Street is my only chip.

        • BigBlueAL

I prefer fantasy drafts. Although I think it makes it alot easier, hence why I find it too easy vs computer even on HOF, cause some of those teams they put together are ridiculous.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Yeah, I always kick ass in the fantasy draft so I stopped. I can’t use the regular Yanks because they are too good. I usually run a ‘chise with the Marlins, who employs my favorite player, or the A’s, who for some reason I have always been my second favorite team. Like seriously, I have no idea why I love the Oakland A’s so much.

            • BigBlueAL

Fantasy drafts in Madden on the other hand are fun as hell. Granted I havent enjoyed Madden since the one with Vick on the cover. I traded in my PS3 version last year once NBA 2K8 and Fifa 08 came out.

              • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

I buy them as a traditionalist thing. I bought it last year, played it for a couple weeks and that was that. This is my last year of buying it just to own it.

                • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Yeah, last year was the first year I didn’t buy Madden.

            • http://www.salarydump.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

I have 360 and have to cope with 2K8 but one my friends and I fantasy-drafted in The Show ’08, with the 18th overall choice, and no trades, the players I can remember:

Hanley, Kinsler, BJ Upton, Doumit, Votto, Dunn, Hamilton, Sizemore
Roy Halladay, Duscherer, Jim Shields, Mussina, Percival, Saunders, Edwin Santana, etc.

Go for up-the-middle guys early (SS/2B/C/CF, SP)

              • http://www.salarydump.wordpress.com Joltin’ Joe

                Oh, Ludwick DH’ed.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Clay Hensley and a MiL reliever for Parra and a MiL reliever.

    • Manimal

You havent updated… that was like 2 weeks ago.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

They have a new one tonight. v2.42.

        • Manimal

PS blog, Joystiq, Kotaku, IGN, none of them reported it. Thanks Jamal for the heads up.

          • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

I still haven’t updated my PS3 to one before that.

            • Manimal

              In game XMB is awesomeeeeeee.

              • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

                XMB?

                • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

You can access the Home screen while in-game, a la XBOX Live.

                • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

I’m having difficulty seeing the advantages of that…

                • Manimal

Clock, in-game music(for some games), automatically switching from a game on a disc to maybe a demo with out quitting the game,

                • Manimal

also checking the progress of your downloaded stuff, messaging in the middle of a game, ect.

              • Manimal

XMB is the Cross Media Bar, the main interface of the PS3.

        • Manimal

my first thought was Life with Playstation(jap title) but I guess its just a security update. For everyone who doesnt know what that is,

          http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/06/27/life-with-playstation-on-video/

        • Manimal

“PS3 update 2.42 improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software.”

          Well, there you go.

      • BigBlueAL

I just checked it has to be a new one cause I updated a couple of weeks ago. Currently updating now (Version 2.42).

    • Manimal

You guys want to play some games anytime soon? I got MGO and Warhawk, we should play sometime.

  • Newman

Really low whip alert: Doug Davis

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Against the Padres, at PETCO. That deserves an asterisk.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

No it doesn’t. That’s a hell of an accomplishment.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Doug Davis is having himself one hell of a game tonight. Like, one hell of a game.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

      Thank God for MLB.TV.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

$10 say if he finishes this that you will only hear about his cancer recovery only a couple times the rest of his career.

  • BigBlueAL

Shit the 2008 edition of the And1 tour has already started airing on ESPN2. Anyone know who won last year??? I always assumed it would be Ballaholic but never actually saw the final episode.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

I missed the whole season, I am ashamed of myself. I should go to VIRGIN and pick up the DVD.

      • BigBlueAL

I saw most of them during re-airs but for the life of me I never saw the last episode where they chose the winner. I just assumed Ballaholic cause shit he has been there long enough….

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Hey, Matt Vasgersian is calling the game, awesome.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Yeah, he’s the Pads regular play-by-play guy. Oh, and The Show is totally Padres-centric. They announcers say all sorts of things for them and Petco that they don’t say for anyone else.

      • BigBlueAL

NOTHING beats Kuiper and Krukow in MVP 2005….

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Except Kruk & Kuip in real life. Best part of the 2 years I spent living in Northern California.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

If anyone, and I mean anyone, deserves to have a no-hit bid broken up by a bunt, it’s Curt Schilling. Karma is a bitch.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Man, Davis’ pitch count is up there. Closing in on 90 now.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Bloop single by Giles, perfect & no-no are gone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Congrats Doud Davis, 6.1-IP is still damn good.

I still feel better about tonight knowing that someone once broke up a no-hit bid by Curt Schilling via a bunt single.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

      “*…Doug Davis…”

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Yo, Ichiro got his 3,000th hit tonight. Combined Japan & USA.

    • Manimal

      damn…

    • Steve

Jeter is at 3010, if you count what he did in the ‘minor leagues’ too . . . . .

  • DP

OK so I got those tickets Ben was selling, I figured I had about 20 options to ask to come with me……..so far I’ve gotten nos and maybes. I still want to go since I havent been this year, does anyone here want to come? First person to respond gets it (including if I find someone on my own, which is looking unlikely til tomorrow morning)

    • Manimal

      Sorry, I’m 4 hours away.

      • DP

Haha yeah I was too up until a couple of weeks ago, which is why I haven’t been to a game

        • Manimal

ha If i had know about it a week ago I’d go. Just scalp em if you don’t find any.

  • Joey H

hey mike. do we have any pics from the game out there? im anxious to see highes in these glasses lol

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

      http://flickr.com/photos/anthropolemic/2715989690/

      http://flickr.com/photos/anthropolemic/2715175907/

      That’s all I can find. Doesn’t look like he’s wearing any glasses…

      • Joey H

contacts maybe? i know they say his control problems were attributed to his lack of eyesight. im not going nuts righ they did say that right lol

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

          Yeah, I remember that.

        • jeff

I’m almost sure I read recently that he is now wearing contacts.

          • Joey H

well its better than those nerdy like outter space things kyle is sporting these days

  • jeff

    “12 for his last 39 (.308)”

I like when you give us a breakdown of how a player is doing recently and it’s basically the same as he’s done for the whole season.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Don’t you listen to Joe Morgan? It’s all about being consistent.

      ;)

      • jeff

        touche

  • Manimal

Is that the most replies to a comment ever here at RAB? 30 replies to Jamal’s comment on Sony being suckish.

  • Joey H

hey guys i just realized something that we all know but never REALIZED. imagine if carly pavano was healthy for that 4 year deal? how different our pitching situation would be. for one, we wouldnt be tossing 2 rookies out there to start a season

    • Manimal

Imagine if Hughes and IPK were DECENT, imagine if wang wasnt hurt, imagine if Jorge didn’t tear every muscle in the shoulder

      • Joey H

no i know injuries havent exactly been nice to us but im just saying if tis prickbastard that we gave 40 mill actually made more than 15 startes during his tenure with us

      • Steve

Imagine if we were the Blue jays and didn’t have a 200 mil payroll.

Dude, everybody has injuries. Nobody’s holding any pity parties for us.

      • Steve

Although if Joe Torre was still Manager we would all be hearing “all he had to go through this year” and “what an amazing job he did this year, maybe his best ever” right now by his lackeys in the sports media.

And as usual, I would be on the verge of puking.

  • Joey H

oh yeah and joe torre and that commercial with him with the bandana on with the tits makes me sick. its like a slap in the face to us ny ppl, like hes happier over there lol. but like usual he has a team in a divisional race at 500 in july.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Yo, I got a pic of Hughes from tonight, I updated the post.

    • Joey H

oh alright cool, jeff said he saw an article where it said hughes will be wearing contacts. hes afraid he wont lool “cool” haha

      • http://www.pinstripesplus.com ansky

Glad to see Corban Joseph playing so well. Having lived in Franklin, Tenn. I’m rooting for him to make it to the Bronx one day.

I actually hope Pavano does well. There was once a decent pitcher in there somewhere. Hopefully he can come up and be better than Sidney or D-Ras.

    Notes from the AAA game:

IPK had some visible disgust with the ump’s strikezone (It was tight all night long). He looked good when he had to be, dropped in a dandy of curveball for a called strike 3 on Miello, but was missing low most of the night. He was called for balk, but it was either that or throw the ball away (He turned to throw and either Miranda wasn’t ready or Ian didn’t have a hold of the ball, so he ate it). The wild pitch was really a foul tip. Kennedy threw up and in on Lydon, who squared to bunt and then pulled back. The ball audibly hit something that sounded like wood. The ump didn’t rule anything and even Lopez who advanced to 2nd, didn’t know if he was supposed to still be there when the AB resumed. That was immediately followed by a nice sac bunt that Kennedy bobbled. In the 2nd, AG made a nice diving grab, Miranda dropped the throw, Carson was being lazy and not backing up 1B. Because of that, Luna decided to try for 3B and was out easily.

Easy night for IPK. Fastball was at 88-91, change was at 81, and the curveball, he only threw maybe 8 of them, was at 75-76. The run he gave up was a scratched out after the foul-tipped wild pitch, a sac bunt, and a sac fly. Bruney replaced him in the 7th and, on the positive side, was hitting 95 consistently. On the negative, he was all over the place after the first two hitters and eventually loaded the bases, but K’d Diaz looking on a slider and escaped with no runs allowed.
