The Jorge Posada problem

How much is that starter in the window?
Posada on the shelf, could be out for the year

While the Yankees are dealing with injuries that have shelved their number one starter and starting DH, they’re also attempting to handle the Jorge Posada situation. Posada, suffering from a shoulder heading to surgery, is no longer a viable option behind the plate this year. He’s thrown out just 7 of 39 would-be base stealers and can’t command the running game. His back up — Jose Molina — has thrown out an astounding 25 of 52 attempting basestealers but has a pathetic OPS+ of 48. Jack Curry checked in with Posada and Joe Girardi today and finds that Posada is frustrated with his shoulder but won’t have the surgery sooner. The Yanks need Jorge’s bat, but they can’t afford to stick him behind the plate. How Joe Girardi handles this over the next few months will go a long way in determining the Yanks’ success this season.

    hip hip jorge!

  • E-ROC

Posada should get real comfortable at first.

  • Paul

Why not trade for Gerald Laird?

  • Geno

I would be all for seeing what it would take to get Jose’s brother Yadier from the Cards. That’s a situation where moving a few talented young arms would be worth it.

    • dan

The Cardinals do have another catching prospect in the minors, in Bryan Anderson. But it’s extremely rare for a team to trade its catcher mid-season, especially when he’s as good as Yadier Molina.

  • dan

If Matsui is out for the year, then Posada is just the full-time DH. He can catch on the occasional day that Girardi wants to DH either Giambi or Damon. It’s only really a problem is Matsui comes back (which sounds weird). With everything I’ve heard, it doesn’t sound like Matsui will be healthy enough to play this season, or at least every day this season.

    • Chris

I agree. Obviously, you’d like to get more offensively out of your catcher, but I don’t know that there are many catchers available – particularly considering that you already have 2 catchers under contract for next year.

  • jsbrendog

off season, cano, kennedy, and someone else for kinsler. jorge at first. resign giambi to dh, trade matsui, and buy spores online to grow a starter in your basement in three weeks or less or your money back.

    • dan

Trading Cano and Kennedy for Kinsler gets the Yankees nowhere. Even if you believe that Kinsler is better (he’s having a better year this year, but it’s tough to make a case for either one), he’s not that much better.

      • Ivan

Add the fact that Cano is a much better defender than Kinsler.

    • Chris A

Ive grown those spores before…they blow. I’m gonna try another batch, preferably ones not labeled pavano or wright

      • jsbrendog

those weren’t the $$ back guarantee ones lol……at least they got insurance on pavano…..god what a douche, who would really sign that guy at this point?

    • Chris

I wouldn’t trade Cano straight up for Kinsler. They’re the same age, so you’re not getting younger with this deal. Defensively it’s not an upgrade. And offensively, Cano has been better than Kinsler until this year. Basically, if you trade anything more than Cano, then you’re selling Cano at his lowest point of value and buying Kinsler at his peak of value.

      • Ivan

Thank you, and add in the fact kinsler is playing a very friendly hitters park, I wouldnt do that trade. Cano when going right can hit just as good as kinsler if not better. That trade makes little sense.

Cano, Kennedy, and someone else for Kinsler is just dumb all the way around.

There’s nobody in the Texas organization that’s worth Cano, Kennedy, and another player. Not even Hamilton.

      • Ivan

Well Hamilton is pretty damn good player.

        • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos

          So is Cano.

  • Brett

Why does nobody mention the fact that Jorge really isn’t hitting that well right now either though? Have the surgery and call it a year..

    • mike

they either need to get Matsui & damon back (which is not happening) or have Sexon hit the hell out of the ball to sit Posada – bad enough they have no righty bats, but at least Damon and Matsui hit lefties ok.

Since Matsui is not coming back, expect to see Posada DHing alot

    • ChrisS

I agree with this, especially with shoulder surgery for a catcher. It’s 6-8 months of rehab at best. Why ruin parts of two seasons instead of just most of one?

    • nick blasioli

i agree with you…go and get a real good bat…the catching duties are being handled pretty good right now…so moeler gets some playing time…

  • Ivan

It seems that Posada is headed back to the DL and might be out for the year. Wow this year is just getting better and better.

  • vinny-b

from what is reported, Posada is out for the season.

  • Glen L

    This sounds less encouraging

The rangers do have a surplus of catching… hmm

  • vinny-b

WFAN. they said, sweeney is set to call in.

  • steve (different one)

apparently Francessa just said Posada is going on the DL and could be done for the season.

    fudge.

    except i didn’t say “fudge”.

Thanks. We’ve got the news up now.
