C.J. Henry to play for NCCA runner up Memphis

On the Red Sox's final trip to Yankee Stadium

When C.J. Henry asked for his release from the Phillies, many thought it was to pursue a career in basketball. Instead, he re-signed with the Yankees, making the Bobby Abreu deal look even better. Now, after an injury-plagued year, Henry has announced that he will join the Memphis Tigers for their 2008-2009 Division 1 basketball campaign. After high school, Henry had signed with Kansas, but forewent that after the Yankees drafted him in the first round. Strangely enough, the school he previously committed to defeated his current team in the NCAA finals bac in March.

In any event, I can’t imagine the Yanks are happy about this decision. Henry might not have much promise left in baseball, but he’s still under contract with the team. And we know what happened last time a Yankee played some off-season basketball.

Henry will return to the Yankees for next season.

and to add insult to injury the yankees are contratually obliged to pay for his tuition.

    • A.D.

as part of the 50K contract they agreed to that?

      • pat

His rookie contract when he signed outta hs. Its customary for the drafting team to pay for the draftees college tuition should they decide to go during the winter. Id say a vast majority of the time they never go but its more of a good faith thing “hey we took your son before he could go to school but to show you we mean well we will offer to pay for his college”

        • A.D.

my guess is Memphis is giving him a ride

Wouldn’t Philly be on the hook for that contract anyways, they took him on and released him

          • pat

Nah hes gonna walk on bc of the yankee money, that way they can give somebody else the scholarship. His little brother is actually a very highly sought after recruit which is prob why they’re agreeing to let cj walk on.

            • pat

I obviously don’t know the specific wording of the contract but I think it is a perpetual option that is he should attend college for any reason the yanks pay the tuition regardless of what team he is presently on.

  • Chief

i saw this guy play for lakewood single A team for philly, and wow he looked totally lost. he flat out sucked.

  • A.D.

Good for CJ, and that he still has this oppertunity, doesn’t look like baseball will necessarily pan out for him, so best of luck

….as long as AJAX doesn’t get any ideas

  • E-ROC

Was Dennis Dixon ever a good baseball before deciding to concentrate on football?

CJ Henry did say he will continue to play baseball professionally in the summer.

  • Capital T

Too bad about his health this year. The thought was that some corrective eye surgery may have helped him during last offseason but with hardly any playing time its hard to say if that was his hitting problem

  • TurnTwo

so if we lose CJ Henry to injury, can we hope that the Yankees will trade for the best OF in the league for his replacement, too?

  • steve (different one)

    should have drafted Hansen!!1!!!

    • Baseballnation

No they shouldn’t of. Hansen was super hyped and every yankee fan kicked themselves after they bypassed Hansen. Hansen has good stuff but ironically sucks pretty bad also. Yes he made it to the show at least, but getting killed in it really doesn’t justify much.

      • E-ROC

I think he was being sarcastic, but I could be wrong.

        • pat

the 1 included in the !!!!!! usually denotes sarcasm amongst internet folk

They shouldve drafted Ellsbury or Buccholz instead of Henry. At least they reached the majors. There were also other players they couldve got, cuz that 05 talent pool was great.

  • JohnnyC

Craig Hansen demonstrates the clear genius of Theo Epstein and his monumental edge on Cashman as a GM without peer. Just another example of the Red Sox system cranking out All-Stars one after the other.

  • JohnnyC

    Sorry, just channeling Ken Rosenthal.

  • bill

The 05 draft was one of the worst for the Yanks in recent memory. Sure, they got AJax, but they had a chance to draft Ellsbury and a number of other good players instead of this Henry fellow. The 05 draft has had the most talented players of the recent drafts, and yet the Yankees have gotten nothing out of their first round pick.

  • Babe’s Ghost

    win some, lose some.
I think the Yankee philosophy is to draft for ceiling rather than floor. Sure a high risk approach will generate disappointments, but it seems like a reasonable strategy to me. Joba would be an example of that of it panning out. Henry not so much.

I didn’t follow the draft in 05, so I don’t know who else was available when they picked, but I think that in general the kids are OK.

    • Kay Sturns

05 was a good draft, no buts. But the all-stars were all taken ahead of us; upton, tulo, zimmerman, braun, maybin, bruce, gordon.

The only guy i would have subbed with Henry at teh time of the draft was Garza out of Fresno. Besides that, don’t buy into the RS Draft Superiority; I’d still test my luck with Henry/Rasmus’s power speed upside
