Mariano was unavailable. Veras was unavailable. Rasner pitched the day before, was bombed, and so Giese pitched 3 IP. they were both unavailable. the entire bullpen was Bruney, Edwar, Marte, and Robertson. Joba got hurt in the 5th inning. worst case scenario. Girardi stretched Edwar for 1 1/3 and Bruney for 1 1/3. the game was TIED in the bottom on the 9th, so extra innings were looming and there was ONE reliever left, Robertson. worst case scenario. did Girardi probably leave in Marte 1-2 batters too long? yes. he probably did. but that is NOTHING, NOTHING at all like the systematic overworking of Vizcaino, Proctor, Gordon, Quantrill and Sturtze over the course of several seasons. it was an emergency situation that Girardi tried to make the best out of. don't forget: CONTEXT is important. the 2 situations aren't even remotely related. can we please remember the FACTS of that game?
