Marshall, Lassiter make their pro debuts

By

How many people would be interested in joining a RAB Fantasy Football League? I’d like to get a deep league, like 16-20 teams so it’s nice and challenging. I’m thinking Sunday August 31st for the draft, figure same time as the Yankee game (1pm) so we can BS and watch the game as we pick. Let me know if you’d be interested (only if your serious, please), and I’ll set it up. If there’s enough interest, I’ll post an official “sign up” thread later this week.

IPK: 5 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 9 K, 2-4 GB/FB – 67 of 101 pitches were strikes (66.3%) … remember, he’s there to work on his two-seamer & curveball, which Chad Jennings says were just missing

Eduardo Nunez & Kevin Smith: both 0 for 4 – Nunez drove in a run & stole a base … Smith K’ed

Chris Garcia: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 2 HB, 2-10 GB/FB – that’s it, finish strong and come out of the gate like a madman next year
Grant Duff: 1 IP, zeroes, 1 K, 1-1 GB/FB
Eric Wordekemper: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

Game 2 (4-2 win over GCL Tigers in 7 innings)

    garcia usually a flyball pitcher?

  6. pat says:

is it evident me and manimal just kept clicking refresh until u posted this?

    • Mike A. says:

Heh. The start of Charleston’s game was delayed a little bit by rain, so tonight DotF went up later than usual.

    • Manimal says:

ha I just checked my rss feed and found it was posted, wasn’t really waiting for it.

      • pat says:

WEll sorry manimal some of us are old fashined and dont know how to work a confangled rss feed

        • Manimal says:

firefox makes it nice and easy lol

        • RSS, you say! Hogwash and balderdash!

Why, back in my day, we were pleased as punch to purview the ol’ morning broadsheets to see how Wee Willie Keeler and Mordecai “Three-Finger” Brown had fared against the Chicago Americans at the ball-park the noon before! The Chicagoans squad was the bees’ knees, you see, good, clean-living bootstrappers who were as strong as Babe the Blue Ox, as fleet as the Lusitainia, and who never drank harder than a sarsaparilla! And, by gum, those boys were good to their mothers, to boot!

So you and Henry Ford can keep your RSS! I say, as sure as there’ll never be a square deal in Red China, there’ll never be a better source than good ol’ Hearst and his yellow rags!

  7. Mike R says:

I am definitely interested in a fantasy football league. Count me in.

  8. A.D. says:

I’d be down for fantasy football

be nice if Garcia is healthy & if hacker can take this to AAA next year

  9. Marc says:

I’d be game with the fantasy league, but I will be at the Yankees game on the 31st. (Sittin with the bleacher creatures of course!)

  10. Brandon says:

Higashioka doesn’t look overmatched at all. Garcia needs to stay healthy dammit, Laird will be a beast next season if he works on his patience at the plate, Jesus needs to move to 1B it’s not a knock against him but Higashioka, Cervelli, PJ and Romine look prime to have a strangle hold on that position.

Cisco can IMO be the back up as early as next season.

  11. A.D. says:

3HR and 7 RBI from the A ball catcher dream team

  12. A.D. says:

So if Lassiter went to college would he have potentially turned into Gordan Beckham?

  13. Manimal says:

Mike, I suggest you have people email you to enter the league, it might get hard to track in the comments.

  14. Rafi says:

I’d be interested in a fantasy football league(especially a deep 20-ish team one). That Sunday works better than Saturday for me.

  15. Jamal G. says:

Yeah, count me in on the fantasy football.

Also, can anyone explain why Jesus Montero is batting ahead of Austin Romine? I know lineups and all don’t matter much in the lower levels of the Minor Leagues, but why wouldn’t Montero being batting cleanup, protecting Romine?

    • Brandon says:

usually the minors are used to see what the player can do on his own. A guy like Jesus needs to build up his own patience and clutch hitting, it will only make him a protector for a player down the line in his career.

  16. A.D. says:

Turley was a 50th round pick, not 5

  17. joe says:

    FF-im in… hopefully through yahoo?

  18. A.D. says:

Jon Ortiz is having a hell of a season

  19. LC says:

I’d be interested in a league. Also, is Hacker the real deal? He’s put up great numbers all year. What does he throw?

    • Mike A. says:

He’s had some injury trouble the past few years, so it’s been tough to get a read on him. Stardard issue fastball, curve and changeup, nothing all that special. Very good command though, which helps everything play up.

      • TurnTwo says:

so perfect trade bait if he continues to put up some good numbers, you think?

        • JohnnyC says:

Hard to believe given the state of the system just a few years ago but we have a surplus of C+/B- arms that we should definitely start to leverage in trades for young position players with untapped potential. Best case scenario would be a Carlos Quentin-type. Especially if we sign someone like CC. Too bad we don’t have the built-in media hype machine that the Red Sox seem to enjoy exploiting whenever they make deals.

          • In a related story, my sources tell me it was actually future ten-time Cy Young winner Michael Bowden who flew into Gori on a top-secret UN plane to personally broker the cease-fire in the Georgia-Russia conflict, right after he finished his latest coaching session with his young sprint protege, Usain Bolt.

For Diamond Cutters, I’m Peter Gammons, ESPN.

  20. Rafi says:

What’s the deal with Oneli Perez? He’s in his third organization of the year? Is he just an org. guy, or can he be a major league reliever? What’s he throw?

  21. r.w.g. says:

    Charleston = the real future

  22. Mike A. says:

Sox demoted Buchholz … to Double-A. Oof.

    • Rafi says:

Is there a link, or just common sense?

    • Jamal G. says:

I’m usually not “happy” over horrible player performances, but with the amount of dicksuck the Red Sox got for having Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz, and Justin Masterson in their rotation, I am fucking happy this happened.

      • Lanny says:

And Lester is an ace. And Masterson is a legit arm out of their pen and probably their rotation next year.

And Bucholz is still a top notch prospect unlike Kennedy.

And Dice K and Beckett are under 30.

We have a lot of catching up to do.

        • Geno says:

Joba is an ace. Why wouldn’t Kennedy be a legit prospect? I’d certainly take IPK for my rotation over Masterson. And I’d take Hughes over Bucholtz any day.

Frankly, I’d rather have Wang than Matsuzaka.

So, they’ve got Beckett on us, which should be rectified in the off-season (CC!).

You were saying something about catching up? If anything, we need bumps in offensive production from a few typical production spots -1B and RF being the 2 that stick out in my mind. A few free agent signings (Burrell, I’m looking at you), and we’re much better off in ’09.

          • Kay Sturns says:

well we are always going to be arguably better than Boston on paper, but that doesn’t really mean much if they aren’t going to play to their baseball cards + injuries

            • Geno says:

Actually, I wouldn’t argue that this year’s team is better than Boston’s. I do think that we have a brighter future lined up though. I just didn’t agree with the comment I responded to. I can’t stand all this whining about how Boston’s light years ahead of the Yankees in pitching development. It’s just not true, and it’s a little defeatist.

    • AlexWest says:

Damn, I was looking forward to him starting against the yankees next week!

  23. Jamal G. says:

Is it safe to say that Saber Scouting is kaput? By this time next week it will be a full calendar month since the last update. It’s a shame if it is true, I really loved their site.

  24. Chris G. says:

Mike, what’s the deal with Turley? They threw him out there for that one bad start. Was that because they were short handed with all of the double headers or just an experiment? He’s probably nothing special, but I have a soft spot in my heart for southpaws and I was just wondering if you knew anything about him.

  25. Stephen says:

Jim Callis of BA and ESPN.com chats said Zach Mcallister’s upside is a number 3 starter. Do ya’ll agree with that? What’s his stuff like?

    • Mike A. says:

Yes, high probability #3 starter. As for his stuff, go here:

      http://riveraveblues.com/2007/.....ster-1408/

    • Sal says:

Stephen that was actually my question (Sal from Connecticut). I tried to get him to answer why on the hot sheet a couple of weeks they called McAllister’s season “pedestrian” but he would not answer it so on lightning round I asked him that. Before Klaw and Callis said that in their recent chats I know me and Mike both agreed that he can be a 3. Totally agree. He’s got some heavy stuff. I see him as Wang with a better capability to strike people out. A total workhorse.

  26. Sal says:

Mike A. De Leon continues to rake in the DSL along with Sosa. Think they get to play in full season ball in the states next season at Charleston or will they play short season for the GCL? Also Sosa hasn’t played in past two games. Just rest? Promotion? Injury? Can’t find any news on it yet.

  27. parms says:

id be down for fantasy football, defensive teams or players?

  28. Reggie C. says:

Hardball Times has been turning out some stellar stuff as of late. Or it could be that they’ve always turned out the really cool indepth analyses with video caps. There stuff on Gerrit Cole had me salivating , and later it served as the source of my disappointment. I think there’s new stuff up on Joba chamberlain.

If Montero isn’t top 3 on BA’s Sally League top prospects list which should be coming out next month … something is wrong !!

  29. bill says:

Montero and Laird are beasts. Laird should be a top 20 prospect for the Yanks. does anyone know how hard my man Kennedy was throwing?

    • r.w.g. says:

Only thing keeping Laird out of the top 20 is his barely-over-.300 OBP. His raw power is just stupid.

      • Mike A. says:

My only issue with Laird is that he’s very one-dimensional. If he goes into a slump with the bat, he’s useless. That said, the bat is truly special.

        • r.w.g. says:

It’s a big issue. He really went cold there for a while.. a couple times. But he’s so young it’s tough to tell if he’s a total hot/cold hitter or he’s just working it out. And when he gets hot.. I mean, everything he hits is going for extra bases. Singles are not in this kid’s repertoire.

Defensively I know he played 3B in JC, I guess he’s been playing mostly 1B for Charleston? Athletic enough to play LF?

        • bill says:

But that means he’s a prospect – he still has things to work on. I think he should be top 15 regardless of his low BA (.260 aint terrible for a power hitter) and low OBP. If he ever puts it together he can be SCARY good. Mike A. – Can you see Montero in AA late next year if he destroys High A?

          • Mike A. says:

I think so. It’s best not to mess with guys in their first season as a pro, especially when they’re that young. But next year, if he’s crushing High-A, why not move him up in August?

        • Jamal G. says:

In the neighborhood of Billy Butler special?

    • cult of basebaal says:

probably as hard as he usually does, 88-92.

    • “does anyone know how hard my man Kennedy was throwing?”
      Hey bill:

      Intelligence > Command > Stuff/Movement > Mechanics > Velocity

  30. Lancer says:

Holy Shit!! This Montero/Romine Duo is awesome!

There’s only one word that needs to be said about Montero: JESUS!!
