Mike Mussina and the Sense of Humor of Doom

A Manny formality, but . . .
Ohlendorf continues to help the Yanks

Dave Brown, Yahoo! Sports’ very own Answer Man, sat down for an interview with Mike Mussina, and the results are priceless.

The always amusing and rather verbose Mike Mussina discusses the new Yankee Stadium, living in New York City, crossword puzzles and the smells on the subway. We also learn that the Yanks’ 15-game winner subscribes to Popular Photography, no longer throws a knuckleball and doesn’t find The Onion’s constant ribbing particularly amusing.

But my favorite part is this exchange:

Q: Why don’t people go to Orioles games anymore?
MM: I don’t think fourth place every year really brings in the fans.

Zing!

This might just be my favorite interview with an athlete I’ve ever read if for the simple fact that Mike Mussina actually has something to say and sounds smart while saying it. Check it out. (Hat tip to BBTF.)

HA AND THEY say he has no personality!

Eh, I’m not so sure that’ll happen.

      • Nady Nation

Me neither. But Mike, would you want it to happen? I was really in favor of making a move for Washburn a couple of weeks ago, but now with Joba’s injury, maybe it’s just better to ride it out with what we’ve got and not be on the hook for his 10 mil next year.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Yeah, exactly. They’ve got a ton of money coming off the books this offseason, no need to lock it back up on crap.

          • Joey H

mike if we get him we have an innings eater who has thrown up pretty decent starts. doesnt go WAY deep into games but he can give a decent effort. hes gotten plunked hard a couple times this year but if we acquire him for a bag of baseballs we have moose pettite joba washburn, hughes and or others by the end of august. i like it.

            • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Paying the remaining ~$10M on his contract isn’t exactly giving up a bag of baseballs. The Mariners had their chance.

              • Joey H

i saw we give THEM a bag of baseballs inreturn for him. look at my lower comment

                • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

These things work one of two ways.

                  1. The Yanks pay most (or all) of the remaining money owed to Washburn, and they give Seattle very little in return.

                  or

                  2. Seattle pays most (or all) of the remaining money, and the Yanks give them something of value for Washburn.

There’s no middle ground. The Yanks can’t give up just a bag of balls for Washburn and expect Seattle to eat some of the money.

                • Joey H

both of those alternatives are alot better than throwing IPK out there again. which do you think they would favor more(M’s)

                • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

I’d rather see them keep throwing IPK out there. Sending him back to Scranton whenever he has a bad start is not the answer. He’s obviously mastered that level, he just needs to take his lumps and improve.

                • Joey H

5/10 starts. 3IP or less. thats not my idea of letting a kid grow, especially when we need to get out of our hole so we can get into the playoffs.

                • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Well, at the same time you’re talking about only 10 starts. IF not now, when?

                • Joey H

what are you talking about? ten starts of IPK so far is what i was referring to.

            • Joey H

oh and out of 20 starts hes allowed 3ER or fewer. while giving them 5+ innings 17/20 times. 11 of which were 6+ IP

              • Joey H

whoops ,my bad. 22 starts i missed the last couple. and in those hes given them 6+ IP 2/3 times. both quality starts

A couple weeks ago, they showed a ‘Yankee Stadium Memory’ of Strawberry hitting a home run during the ’96 season. It was interesting because the second and third decks were completely empty. One winning season is not going to drive up attendance, it takes a couple years to bring people back.

    • Joey H

you noticed that too? i cant remember which clip it was, but i got to see the color of the seats, something that this day we dont get to do

There are also interviews with Jeter, Joba and Erin Andrews at the bottom of the Moose piece. They are all pretty interesting for short interviews.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Joseph P.

Wow. Lots of stupid questions. Why interview a guy if you don’t have anything legitimate to ask?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Heh, I was asking myself the same thing. That guy is kind of an idiot.

  • Efrem Goldman

I saw this Moose interview link at Waswatching the other day. Why would Moose share that the knuckle curve is gone? Why not let the batters think that it could be coming?

  • dkidd

not sure why, but i never enjoyed watching mussina pitch until this year. now he’s the most fun to watch of anyone in the rotation.
