Open Thread: NY Football

By Mike Axisa

The Yankees suck. Or at least they do right now. They’re on pace for about 86 wins, which would be their lowest total since 1995, and the first time they’ve won fewer than 90 games since 2000. But enough of that, let’s forget about the Yanks for a night and talk some football.

So who’s going to throw more INT’s this year, Eli or Fav-ruh? Will D’Brickshaw break out this year? How much will the G-Men miss Shockey?

Whatever you guys wanna talk about, have at it here. J! E! T! S! Jets Jets Jets!!!

Nady Nation says:

Wow, that was easy. Anyway, who’s got early Super Bowl predictions? Always fun to speculate in the preseason. I’m still formulating mine, but will have it later in the evening.

Mike A. says:

I like the Bills and 49ers. Early ’90s style. ;)

BigBlueAL says:

You sound like the Swami…

matt says:

Just say no to the NFL

BigBlueAL says:

This is a sad day as a Yankees fan, we are in the middle of August and the baseball season is basically over for us and its time to talk football. UGH.

Unfortunately for me the Knicks are the only team that come close, actually I basically love both teams and both sports the same, and honestly this upcoming Knicks season might be the least I am looking forward to season for the Knicks since I can remember. Football has always been by far my 3rd favorite sport and I usually never got into it, except for Fantasy Football, until late October if you know what I mean.

Actually November and December should be fun to see what the Yankees do in the off-season and of course February is only 6 months away which means Spring Training 2009 baby!!!!!!!

Nady Nation says:

Whoa whoa whoa, you sound like Hank. We’re not giving up on the season, just diverting our attention for a night.

Nady Nation says:

I am a Giant fan, but this should be a very fun/exciting year for the NY football area with the Jets getting a QB who won’t short hop a 20 yard pass pattern

Fellows Jets fans: #2 QB at the end of the season, Ratliff or Clemens?
#2 CB: Miller, Poteat, or Lowery?

In response to Mike’s questions:
Favre will get picked more than Manning, because Eli has been more of a touch guy while Favre likes to chuck it deep and it might get out of hand with Cotchery and lav

The Giants will miss that solid and dependable intermediate target that could break away. however boss receives fine enough for me and he certainly blocks better than the shock man.

Super Bowl: Chargers v. Cowboys, with the Cowboys winning

Mike A. says:

I hope it’s Miller, but I suspect it’ll be Lowery.

To me it’s the opposite–I hope it’s Lowery but I think it’ll be Miller

E-ROC says:

Clemens isn’t a good QB, so I wouldn’t be shocked if Ratliff overtakes him. Ratliff was a solid collegiate player, but haven’t really stuck with any team in the NFL for a couple years until now.

Lowery is good CB from San Jose State. He was one of my late round sleepers in the draft. I think the Jets will ease him into the role of starting CB, if Justin Miller doesn’t make any notable progress. So I think Justin Miller will be the starter when the season starts. Lowery will probably play predominately special teams and/or in dime packages. Hank Poteat is an ok player.

Ratliff was on the practice squad last year after being UDFA. I don’t think he’d stick there this year

I agree with your assessments on the CBs.

Joseph P. says:

I’m convinced Erik Ainge is going to be decent. He’s got a good arm, and comes from a college offense that hasn’t been updated in 30 years.

E-ROC says:

Favre might put the Jets at .500 or slightly above. The AFC is just too tough for them to make the playoffs. There are many teams that are better than them at the moment. They may make the playoffs next year though. I can definitely see that happen.

As far as the Giants go, they’ll make the playoffs. I wonder how their defense will play without their leader in Michael Strahan. They do have Tuck and Osi and maybe Pierce to step in the role as leader, but Strahan had clout. Will Osi be as dominate without Strahan?

Mike A. says:

That’s a good point. I wonder if Osi’s play with suffer from no more Strahan. I can see it happening, although I could see Tuck having a monster year.

Nady Nation says:

Tuck is a beast. I really loved having him on the interior b/c he’s so much faster than the fat OL’s. There is no doubt that we will miss Strahan’s leadership as well as his performance, but I think Tuck, along with Kiwanuka in pass rushing packages, will be able to more than adequately fill his void.

E-ROC says:

Michael Strahan was one of the most complete DEs to ever play the game. Pass rushing is where the glory is, but stopping the run is equally important, if no more. Is Justin Tuck an every down DE or is he just a pass rushing specialist? I do like Kiwanuka though. I think he has a bright future.

Nady Nation says:

Couldn’t agree more. I didn’t mean to sound like Strahan will be easily replaced. He is the best overall DE I’ve ever seen play – his play against the run is what made him so amazing. But I think we have candidates who, like you said, have bright futures

steve (different one) says:

i will be happy if the Giants go 8-8.

i am still high from the Super Bowl.

as spoiled a fan i am in baseball, this Super Bowl was so out of no where and amazing that it WILL last me several years.

it’s almost like how the 1996 World Series was the best one.

we’ve all gotten spoiled by the Yankees.

Nady Nation says:

Great analysis. Beating a perfect New England team for the SB win was just icing on the cake too. It will be nice to refer to the G-Men as World Champions til next February

(Comments wont nest below this level)

btw I say Ratliff is the second QB on the Jets by the end of the season

Joey says:

nope Kellen will hold him off

E-ROC says:

I think the Ravens will win the Super Bowl. There is a ton of bias in my statement, lol. The AFC is hard to predict. You have the Colts and Patriots, then everybody else. Sorry, but the Chargers just haven’t done anything that suggests they belong in that group. They’ve had arguably the most talented team in the NFL for two or three years and haven’t done squat to show for it. I think the Patriots will be back in the Super Bowl.

For the NFC, I am going to go out on a limb and say the Seattle Seahawks. It’s Mike Holmgren’s (spelling?) last year of coaching and I think he’ll go out on the losing end of another Super Bowl appearance.

E-ROC says:

If JT O’Sullivan becomes the 49ers starting CB, I might have to jump off a ledge. Seriously, why draft a QB in Alex Smith and not develop him? He’s already had about two or three different offensive coordinators in his short career. That doesn’t help. What also doesn’t help is his HC calling him out in the media about his toughness.

Mike A. says:

Yeah no kidding, they’ve done everything possible to screw Alex Smith up.

E-ROC says:

I guess no one wants to talk about football. :( Saddens me.

Mike A. says:

Yeah well, we tried. I just downloaded the Madden demo for PS3. Safe to say I’ll be purchasing it this weekend.

E-ROC says:

Yeah, that’ll be bought. No doubt!!

I wonder if the Madden curse will apply with Brett Favre being in a Jets jersey. On the cover, he is in a Packers jersey; though fans can download the cover on their website.

Joey says:

Have it for the PS3, and it is well, Madden. Can’t be beat. Awesome just doesn’t describe the game anymore with it’s graphics, gameplay, etc… and the one thing I love it that every year it just becomes that much more realistic both AI, schemes, etc.

Definitely recommend it

Back to Glory says:

How bout we talk some baseball – about how this team will make a comback that rivals ‘78…

Baseballnation says:

Tack had a more impressive season last then strahan, and it’s not like it was out of the blue, he was considered a dominant pass rusher coming out of Notre Dame. And that was in spot work. Him and Osi are extremely fast pass rushers that will leave teams picking there poison because both can’t be doubled.

Shockey’s void will be extremely felt this season as he wasn’t only a dominant skill set at the position but also a very good blocker. Maybe to good as Coughlin used him more as a blocker, which is a shame because he’s clearly the most talented tight end in football followed by no one.

Eli will have more pics then Farve…i know that sucks to say but Eli still has not shown consistent accuracy and the Giants play in the toughest division in football.

usty says:

Clearly the most talented? He wasn’t even the best TE in his division.

Joey says:

Shockey=overrated. He has a huge attitude problem, always hurt. When he is in the lineup, yes, he is very good, but not even close to Gates/Gonzalez. He was overhyped coming out of college and has somehow continued. Yes the Giants are worse off without him, but not as much as everybody seems to thing

Reggie C. says:

Kenny Phillips will be defensive rookie of the year. He will kick a*s and take names starting from game 1 !!!

Joey says:

Gholston = Defensive Rookie of the Year

Kevin Smith (DET)= Offensive Rookie of the Year (okay, I’m biased he played for my school, but I swear he is a BEAST)

Donny says:

Super Bowl Predictions:

The Manning Bowl.

barry says:

If Eli can keep playing like he did in the playoffs then he will probably field the same if not better stats than farve. Someone is missing shockey? I second Donny and I think it’s going to be Manning on Manning in the super bowl.

Dan says:

Anyone else feel like the favre trade was just a way for mangini and tannenbaum to keep their jobs for two more years at the expense of rebuilding properly? At first i was a big fan of Mangini (not so much tannenbaum), but with time past, i can’t say i agree with any of the moves they’ve made as a coach/gm tandem. Mangini is no parcells and this could go down as the worsst transitiion from 4-3 to 3-4 ever so far. just bad moves, bad drafts all around in my opinion. i mean really, we got nothing for vilma and mangold has been the best draft pick we’ve had since they came into power…
