Tampa wraps up their season with a win

By

Phil Coke and Chad Moeller are the first two September call-ups; they’ll join the team in Detroit tomorrow. The 40-man roster is currently full, but Chien-Ming Wang & Jorge Posada can be moved to 60-day DL to make room. Dan Giese will be activated from the DL on Tuesday, joining the team in Tampa. How much are they missing him right now? Crazy.

  1. According to Ashmore, Sanchez was promoted

  2. Ivan says:

Who would of thought that Montero would hit well over .300 with 52 XBH’s. Terrific year all around.

And Im really been impress with Romine this season also. Hitting at .300 with 10Hr’s.

    • Reggie C. says:

Nobody could’ve predicted this kind of season from Montero. The doubles and homers were right where i hoped they’d be. For a 19-year old to bat .325 and slug .490 in 520 ABs is ovation worthy.

The Yankee org. got it right signing this kid.

      • Steve says:

I don’t know about “nobody”. His scouting report for outstanding power to all fields has proved to be true, and it is expected to get better as he matures. The reports also said he had an advanced approach at the plate, and that has proved to be true as well. I think he’s living up to expectations, not exceeding them.

    • Steve says:

Montero deserves all the kudos he gets, but Romine has quietly put up a terrific season with both the bat and the glove. Looking forward to seeing both guys progress next year.

  3. pat says:

romine’s goin out with a bang. very nice to see.

  4. bill says:

    Laird is amazing, another homerun

  5. Ivan says:

I very interesting to see Phil Coke pitch at the big league level.

    • Steve says:

Me too, I’ve been hearing for years his future is as a lefty out of the bullpen. Lets see if that’s true. He’s 25 years old, its time to put up or shut up.

  6. Manimal says:

Bring up shelley and christian and put A Jax to AAA for the rest of the year.

    • dan says:

He played in Trenton for the playoffs last season and did pretty well, it wouldn’t surprise me if they did it again. But they might want to leave in Trenton just to finish out the playoffs with the team he’s been on all year. Last year he was a mid-season promotion, so he wasn’t as settled in. After rambling for 4 lines, I think he’ll stay where he is.

  7. dan says:

Does anyone else think Robertson is shell-shocked from that game a few weeks ago when he gave up the grand slam? It was his first career homer allowed, and the next day he gave another dinger. He had been dominating up to that point, but has struggled mightily since–even tonight back in the minors.

    • Reggie C. says:

That’s probably the case. Robertson entered into a situation where the Sox were already ripping pitches the whole game. Joe G. brought him in against a the white-hot Pedroia , and the result was not surprising.

  8. Mike R. says:

Romine must feel like Jan Brady. The guy puts up an OPS over .750 in a pitcher’s park in a pitcher’s league and gets close to no attention. Must be cold in the shadow of Jesus.

  9. A.D. says:

Did Humberto Sanchez pitch 6 innings last night?

  10. A.D. says:

Could be an exciting dotf tomorrow, with the Garcia & Sanchez pitching in the same game and Hughes going.

  11. Ed says:

Just a heads up Mike, the roster on Yankees.com is out of date.

Wang was placed on the 60 day DL to get Ponson onto the roster. Hughes was activated from the 60 and optioned to the minors about 2-3 weeks ago – before he was sent to AAA.

Yahoo, ESPN, and CBS all reported the Wang move I believe. I know Yahoo & Pete Abe reported on the Hughes move. ESPN & CBS seem to have missed that one.

  12. A.D. says:

    When does SI season end?

    • steve says:

I wasted my time with a ridiculously long comment on that…

    • Mike A. says:

That same old hack story is getting old. Real original writing there. I’m sure not getting Johan Santana and keeping Hughes & IPK is the reason they’ve scored 3 or fewer runs in 60 games or whatever the hell it is.

      My favorite line:

Send up a flare the next time you see a half-dozen can’t-miss hitters in the Yankees’ system.

Like it’s so easy. There’s not a half-dozen can’t miss players – let alone hitters – in the entire minor leagues.

  13. Groundhoggator says:

Hughes was off 60day DL back on 7/31 and Wang was placed on 60day DL on 6/27 (Ponson signing).

  14. Bill N says:

Why is Moeller getting called up ? Did we not see enough of him the first go around to realize he stinks ? Now I know that the playoffs are a stretch but seriously if we are still holding onto hope does Chad F’n Moeller give us the best chance……

  15. Bill N says:

No, I just don’t understand the need for a 3rd catcher.

    • cult of basebaal says:

well, when both of your 1st 2 catchers can’t really hit, it allows you to pinch hit at will, which i imagine girardi will do, especially when the rosters really expand after the AAA playoffs are done …
