Team USA clinches spot in medal round

By Mike Axisa

The USA Olympic baseball team clinched a berth in the medal round thanks to this morning’s 4-2 win over Chinese Taipei, which pushed their record to 4-2. Korea (6-0), Cuba (5-1) and Japan (4-2) also clinched spots in the medal round. Each team still has one game remaining in the preliminaries before starting the Semifinals on Friday. Stephen Strasburg lines for tomorrow’s start against Japan, meaning Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson will be on the mound for the semifinals and finals (if they make it), respectively.

Eric says:

Any idea who goes for Japan?

Mike A. says:

Not sure, but Darvish threw Japan’s 5th game, so I doubt it’ll be him.

Jamal G. says:

Are there any top notch talents outside of the U.S.A. squad that we should be paying attention to other than Yu Darvish and Yulieski Gourriel?

Mike A. says:

Those guys are the two elite players. The only other guys worth paying attention too are on the Japanese squad (don’t know their names), but they’re nothing more than back-end/middle relief and average everyday players. No stars.

Jamal G. says:

Any new rumblings on 19-year-old Cuban defect, Dayan Viciedo?

Mike A. says:

You know I don’t pay attention to that sort of stuff. ;)

Jamal G. says:

True, true.

Hey, Madden arrived this morning. Played a great defensive game in my first game (online, it’s a ritual of mine to always play my first game online), but threw four INT’s with Eli Manning. One was off a blitz, but the others were just bad decisions by mua. I kicked the guy’s ass (Raiders) up and down the field. More yards, more TOP, more everything. I ended up losing 10-7.

rbizzler says:

Did D-Mac break off anything nice for your foe?

Jamal G. says:

Nah, I contained him pretty nice throughout the game. He had a couple decent gains in the dude’s final drive which resulted in the GW-FG.

rbizzler says:

I am curious to see how nice he is as Madden (video game) always undervalues the rooks a bit.

Mike A. says:

Gholston’s an 82 overall and dumb as a rock. His “smart linebacker” rating is like, 50.

Guys, I should warn you, the dudes who run this blog really hate it when you go off topic.

Mike A. says:

Eh, I usually let it slide as long as it’s something informative and/or entertaining. If it’s something retarded (ie we’d be in first if we had Santana) then I get angry, and you wouldn’t like me when I get angry.

The Tropical Storm is scaring me.

Andy In Windy & Rainy Daytona says:

Well we COULD have had Santana for Melky and Brien Taylor.

Mike A. says:

It’s just a Tropical Storm, Andy. Quit whinning you wuss.

I started a franchise over the weekend with the Jets. I usually skip the preseason, but I played it this time because it’s been a while since I played and I wanted to shake the rust off. After an 0-4 preseason, I won the first game of the season vs the Dolphins on a walk-off FG, then got destroyed by the Pats and Chargers. I had no answer for LT, the only player that could tackle him solo was Kerry Rhodes, everyone else just bounced right off.

The only way I can generate offense is by running behind Faneca and Mangold, or screen passes to Leon Washington. Favre has like, an 0-10 TD/INT ratio. It’s so much fun though.

rbizzler says:

But is it more fun than the upcoming Glass Carl start this weekend? That is the real question.

How many GM’s in the NFL are wondering if Usain Bolt can catch a football?

rbizzler says:

If the final qualifier doesn’t count for anything (seeding, maybe), why not push Strasburg back until the medal round? I am assuming he is their best pitcher.

Mike A. says:

Well, Cahill and Anderson aren’t exactly chopped liver. There’s basically the two best pitchers in the minors behind Price.

LiveFromNewYork says:

Baseball should be part of the winter olympics because most players play in the summer. The basketball players (pros) get to play for the Olympics. Would love to see Joba pitching for the US

Andy in Soon To Be Windblown Daytona says:

A Winter Olympic sport has to be played on ice or snow.
