Heredia has 19 unearned in 101 IP.

McAllister had 11 unearned runs in 10 starts with Charleston. (62.1IP). Multiply that by 1.63 to get him (almost) 101IP, and you get… 17.93 unearned runs.

De la Rosa has 8 in 90 innings but isn’t as much a ground ball pitcher. He’s actually was quite even between GO and FO in Charleston. (1.07 GO/FO)

Considering how close McAllister and Heredia are, I don’t see it as a problem, but more a result of poor defense.

Perhaps. Then again how do you explain a ground ball pitcher like MaCallister and a former outfielder like De La Rosa excelling in Charleston with these same fielders? Sometimes a spade is just a spade. Tampa and Trenton will be exciting to watch next year.

4th inning:
Ground out
Grounder to Angelini – throwing error – runner to second
Ground out – runner to third

Ground ball single
Double
Strikeout

Perfect example of how he is let down. Three runs right there. Also, who knows if that single could have been picked up.

5th inning:

Could he work on bailing his defense out? Sure, but a pitcher shouldn’t have to deal with his defense giving up an out and giving the other team 2 bases two times and 1 base once in only two innings.

It most definitely does. It’s hard to be a groundball pitcher with a middle infield with 75 errors even if they have 75 errors. For example, say Carmen Angelini runs a good distance to his right to get to a ball, but can’t field it, that’s a single not an error. That goes on Jairo when a normal SS could field it. Say a hard hit groundball eats him up and takes a bad bounce. That’s a single and that’s on Jairo when it could have been a DP. Say an outfield misjudges a flyball with the bases loaded but doesn’t touch it, that’s a double and all runs are earned. Then take all the cases where they are considered errors. With a decent to solid defense, his numbers would definitely look much prettier.

Fair point about all the errors, but that is only one aspect of defense. Do the infielders have good range? (I don’t know the answer by the way) If they do, then the amount of errors doesn’t really matter.
