Yanks finding new and creative ways to lose
What fate Melky?

While Tyler Kepner speculates that Carl Pavano could — baring some not-so-catastrophic injury — be Saturday’s starter, Pavano seems to have other plans in mind. According to numerous reports — including one from PeteAbe — Pavano skipped a bullpen session yesterday with a stiff neck. I mean, seriously? Seriously? Just pitch.

It’s very much in Carl Pavano’s interest to pitch at the ML level, in order to showcase himself for a contract. In that vein, it seems very odd that Pavano would fake an injury in order to delay (or prevent) a start at the ML level, since it prevents him from pitching for a contract.

Just throwing that perspective out there. Maybe a stiff neck is really a stiff neck. I’ll freely admit that it’s easy to be skeptical when it comes to Carl, but…

…did anyone challenge Matt Clement’s motivation over the course of his injury-riddled seasons with Boston? Just out of curiosity, and that’s an honest question.

    • http://knickerbockerchatter.blogspot.com Bruno

Of course not. He was wasting Boston’s money, why would we question him? LOL

    • Ed

Clement had basically every possible structural problem you could think of in his shoulder. Any structural damage to your shoulder puts your career at risk. His was at the point that the doctors had no clue what to expect out of him – no idea if or when he’d be able to pitch again. And the guy got hit in the head with a line drive. You can’t complain much there.

Now Pavano… we’re talking a guy who missed a month due to bruised buttocks because he fell covering first base. Phantom shoulder injuries that no medical tests could find signs of. Opted for Tommy John surgery when it apparently wasn’t necessary (Pettitte claimed to have had identical test results early in his career and opted for rehab instead).

      • Hitman

Pavano got confirmation from 4 seperate doctors that he has ligament damage in his elbow. Ok we get it you and many ppl hate Pavano but let’s not start making things up now. You’re just making yourself look bad.

  • http://knickerbockerchatter.blogspot.com Bruno

    I wish I was surprised.

  • 27 this year

He should get sued majorly and kicked right out of the player’s union denied of everything. I can’t believe that the player’s association would back a guy like him. He just ripped off the Yankees and continuously plans to stay away from pitching. Honestly, this guy has no heart and I freakin want to punch him in the face which would probably end his career seeing how his buttocks can cause him to miss months.

    • Old Ranger

He is in the union…therefore, whatever happens, they will back him all the way. That’s what unions do. 27/09?

  • pounder

Have the Yankees been getting him pysch help ? Seems to me he has a serious case of non confidence.

  • steve (different one)

let’s wait until Saturday before we crucify the guy, no?

maybe he really had a stiff neck but still plans on making the start.

if he doesn’t pitch, i’ll be at a loss for words. but it’s too early still.

    i think.

    • Old Ranger

      True!
If it were anyone else, would we have this discusion? Damm, I hate sticking up for this guy, but if he can help the team…well that’s different. 27/09?

  • http://www.samiamsports.blogspot.com the “ghost” of samiam

I dont care if it is a real stiff neck! A true gamer steps out on the mound with an injury 10X worse if it means helping out his team. A STIFF NECK?! COME ON! WE’RE TALKING ABOUT A STIFF NECK HERE!! ITS NOT LIKE IT REQUIRES SURGERY OR ANYTHING CLOSE TO IT! PUT ON A FREAKIN HEAT PAD AND GET THE HELL ON THE MOUND YA WUSSY

    • radnom

….its a bullpen session, not game 7 of the world series………….

      • Old Ranger

        Amen!
Also, if he were to pitch with ANY (even minor) injury…Dizzy Dean, anyone. One can hut their arm by changing or altering one’s pitching motion. Unless, one works up to it, as in rehab or spring training etc…that’s a big no no. 27/09?

  • A.D.

Its just a bullpen session, not like he missed something important, precaution, after all if we’ve learned anything is Pavano pushing little injuries can turn into big ones

  • Count Zero

lol – priceless! Who wants to bet even money on whether or not he can make his next start? MLB or MiLB.

Seriously — does he have even a shred of dignity? If I were him, I would be begging to start on Saturday even if my arm was broken — just to prove I had some cojones.

    • Old Ranger

Saturday is a long way off, he can still pitch that day. Damm, it is only a stiff neck, he has time to get a bullpen session in and still pitch on Saturday…let’s not get to carried away here. 27/09?

      • Count Zero

Ordinarily I would agree. But this is Pavano we’re talking about. Where’s there’s smoke, there’s a 20,000 acre forest fire about to engulf the entire western US! ;-)

  • jsbrendog

regardless of whether its real or not, his fault or not, the guy is a sad sorry excuse for a baseball player. nothing about him as a person because he already knew he stole our money which i would like ot think is why he tried to hide his accident from the cra accident.

but as a baseball player, he’s a sack of suds. he is the “guy who was traded for pedro” and with mistakes like that is it any wonder les expos went under? and trading the whol cleveland indians starting 9 for butthole colone .

carl, just giv eit up man. its not worth this. you have the money, go home, have a fmily, and enjoy life.

  • Kyle D.

I have long since stopped counting on Pavano for anything. To get so riled up at THIS point in his contract is a little absurd. The guy is a fraud. If he starts, he starts. If he doesn’t, he doesn’t. I couldn’t care less either way. Getting worked up about Pavano probably isn’t worth the theoretical energy it takes to send electrical impulses through your brain making you think about him.

  • http://www.workwithpete.com Pete

Something tells me if the game weren’t at home, Pavano might be more willing to step out there. He knows he’s in for a world of harassment in the Bronx.

  • Old Ranger

Kyle D…Had it about right; if he pitches he does, if not…not. If he is able to approach his normal form, we could use him big time. If not, not. Don’t forget he was a hell of a pitcher at one time, he could win 3-5 games yet this year. 27/09?

  • Mark B

Pop 2 Alleves, see the chiropractor and get ready for Saturday, Carl. If you still cannot pitch, your toelrance for pain needs to be questioned, if not your manhood!

  • Nickel

Geez…the dude can’t even sleep without getting hurt.

Seriously, though, I think we should all calm down. I’ll reserve any disparaging remarks to him until this actually prevents him from pitching Saturday. Also, if that happens, it’s not like it’s costing us the season. So many other factors have accomplished that.

    • JohnnyC

“Geez…the dude can’t even sleep without getting hurt. ”

Yeah but that’s supposedly why Beckett’s skipping his next start. Slept on his arm. Numbness in his pitching hand. But, of course, Beckett plays the injury game the right way.

I mentioned BS injurys the other day and Jamal jumped on me.
