Bleich wild in Hawaii debut

Game 162: It feels like Spring Training
The Fat Lady sings as Yanks split in Boston

I’m going to hold another live chat sometime this week, probably mid-day Monday or Tuesday. I’ll post a reminder with a definite time once I get it figured out. Here’s the two previous chats if you want to see what’s up.

HWB Waikiki (7-2 loss to Honolulu)
Austin Romine: 0 for 4, 1 K – started behind the plate & batted 7th … he reached base on a fielding error by the shortstop … threw two would-be base stealers out, but one got in safe
Jeremy Bleich: 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 3-2 GB/FB – picked a runner off first … 23 of 51 pitches were strikes (45.1%) … yeah, so he was having trouble throwing strikes … must be the time difference or something

The Arizona Fall League starts on October 7th.

  • UWS

Bleich sucks. He’s obviously a bust and should be cut ASAP.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

Don’t forget that he’s also part of the wasted drafts that have been the Yanks’ hallmark for the last seven decades. You left that out.

      • UWS

        That’s right. Busty McBusterson.

        • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos

Busty McBusterson… heh, sounds like a pornstar.

  • Ivan

Oh by the way Bleich need TJS. Well that’s what Madden said.

  • Rafi

Since I probably won’t be able to make the live chat this week(Rosh HaShana), can you please answer this question for me: Which Yankees up&down guys(Britton, etc.) are out of options. Thanks

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

I believe Britton is the only one.

Albaladejo, Edwar, Veras and Wright all have one option left, which I presume will be used next year.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Betemit’s out of options too, but that won’t matter.

      • Rafi

What about Sanchez? Does he have to be added to the 25-man out of ST, or does he have the option still? Also, when you said Wright you mean Chase, yeah?

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Sanchez has 2 options left, they didn’t use one this year because he was technically only in the minors less than 20 days (not counting rehab).

          And yes, Chase Wright.

    • Miles Roche

      Ketiva Vachatima Tova!

      • Rafi

        Likewise

        • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos

          Matzo!

(That’s all I know. Well, that and Dreidel.)

  • Mulls

Is there a way we can fleece the mets for edwar / veras or some kinda reliever package. Minayas definetaly going to be fiending to over haul that pen after it being there demise 2 years in a row. Would edwar, veras plus get you fernando martinez?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Would edwar, veras plus get you fernando martinez?

Would you give up Austin Jackson for Scott Schoenweis and Aaron Heilman? Thought so.

      • UWS

Hey, it all depends on how stupid the other GM is. Never count out Omar in that department :)

      • Rafi

I was thinking something similar. Well put

      • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi

Yes. He’s obviously a bust and should be cut ASAP.

        h/t UWS

        • UWS

          Thank you, thank you. *bows*

          • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi

            A h/t in a blog comment… It’s, like, the ultimate honor.

            • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

              The only thing better is a h/t in a blog post. It’s … it’s … it’s glorious.

              • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi

Dude way to pour salt in the wounds of those of us who have never received the much coveted h/t.

  • Ivan

Hey Mike can ya start the ST timer like last year.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

We will, we’ll get it up sometime this week. Everyone’s starting on Feb 15th this year because of the WBC.

      • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos

You mean the WBC where ARod is going to hit .450/.590/.840, because the games matter and he’s clutch.

  • http://www.new.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/profile.php?id=594331910&ref=name Jamal G.

Beckett to start Game 3 (per Francona on NESN, via SoSH).

    • http://www.new.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/profile.php?id=594331910&ref=name Jamal G.

Then again, last time Tito said Beckett just slept on his pitching arm and he ended up going to see Dr. James Andrews. So take this with a grain of salt.

  • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi

See? Michael Kay says to keep an eye on Derek Lowe. Just one more reason why the YANKEES SHOULD NOT SIGN DEREK LOWE.

Seriously, I might spontaneously combust if they sign Lowe. I don’t know why I get so worked up about it.

    • http://www.new.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/profile.php?id=594331910&ref=name Jamal G.

Heh, I think you just misunderstood us. We were saying that Derek Lowe is currently the safest option on the free-agent market not named C.C. Sabathia. That does not mean that we are advocating his signing (well, for anything more than two years), just saying he has become the #2 starting pitcher in the upcoming off-season.

      • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi

No no, no misunderstanding. I know you’re not yelling from the rooftops that the Yankees need to sign Derek Lowe. There are people who comment here who are pining away for him, to be sure, but I know you’re not one.

Still though, if they sign that guy… It better be as, like, a 4-5.

    • Manimal

He is good and tosses alot of innings. What’s so bad about him? Sure hes an Ex red sox player but we had 3 of them on our team last year (Damon, Menky and Myers) so its not a big deal.

      • whozat

He’s yet another aging pitcher. And, as the only other healthy, relatively accomplished pitcher available, he’ll get more years than are wise.

Though, if Moose and Andy retire…

      • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi

I don’t give a shit what team anyone used to play for. Derek Lowe is not very good.

        • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi

Sorry, that wasn’t a very informative response. I’ve just written about Lowe a few times and don’t want to look at his stats again. Check out his stats, especially his last few years in the AL East, and keep in mind his age. Derek Lowe is not very good and should be no more than a 4 or 5 starter on the Yankees, if he has to be on the team at all.

      • A.D.

D-Lowe pitching in the NL, in Chavez Ravine, in the NL west, is a whole lot different that then D-Lowe that would pitch in Yankee stadium in the AL east. Think of his last 2 year starting in Boston aka and ERA north of 4.50

  • UWS

Thank you, Girardi, for finally pointing out the real reason why Cano’s improved so much lately. I don’t know which meme was stupider: the “Cano needs teh Larry Bowa!!!11!” or the “ZOMG Cano woke up after the benching!111!!!”

    • whozat

      What’d he say?

      • UWS

He pointed out that Cano has made adjustments to his batting stance.

        • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos

You mean to say that there was a possible reason for Cano’s 2008 struggles, other than the veiled references to him being some sort of a lazy, shiftless, ignorant Dominican that are fueled by my latent racism?

          Well, how about that…

  • Ivan

To be honest, I really don’t know what the yanks are gonna do in the offseason.

    • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi

Nobody does, my friend. It’ll be fun, though. (Unless Cash walks and Hank decides to blow up our player development system and hire a puppet-GM. That will not be fun.)

      • whozat

I don’t think Hank has the kind of pull you think he has. Hank hasn’t gotten anything he wanted that the rest of the braintrust didn’t agree with.

I trust Hal to bring back Cash. Hopefully, a gag order for Hank will be part of that deal. I mean, the guy didn’t even GO to the last game, did he?

        • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi

He writes a blog at sportingnews.com, he’ll be tough to shut up. The guy loves attention and he loves acting like he’s the guy in charge, whether he is or not.

I don’t know what kind of pull Hank has. In fact, I don’t think he has much power at all when it comes down to it. But that just makes him more scary to me. If this guy has relatively little power right now, and he drives Cashman away with his public persona (if Cash leaves, etc.) anyway, I don’t want to see what he does to that front office if/when he has more power.

          • whozat

“anyway, I don’t want to see what he does to that front office if/when he has more power.”

Me neither. But, let’s be frank…Hal’s actually run the team this year. Personally, I think that Hal will stand up to Hank and get him to shut his trap. At least enough to convince Cash that Hank won’t set up a Tampa-mafia-redux. The real beat reporters seem to have learned that Hank has no cred. Can’t stop the tabloids from calling him, but maybe — just maybe — he’ll realize that talking too much actually HURTS the team’s negotiating positions. As a business man, you hope he’d understand that.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

So now it’s official: the Yanks have the 23rd pick in the ’09 draft.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Nats have the #1 AND #10 picks next year. Let’s see them open up the wallets for that.

      • pat

QUESTION: do you ever see picks being a trade-able commodity?

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

I say yes, eventually. I bet FA compensation is eliminated then.

      • http://www.new.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/profile.php?id=594331910&ref=name Jamal G.

What the bloody hell were they thinking not coughing up the reported $900K it would’ve taken to ink Aaron Crow? If that was the case.

        • A.D.

terrible, Aaron Crow, #23 pick this year….I could go for that!

    • Ivan

      eh not bad.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Of course, they’re going to lose it for signing the inevitable Type-A FA.

        • Ivan

Pretty much, who knows who that could be.

          • pat

i hope we sign cc first so our first rounder goes to milwaukee instead of anaheim

        • whozat

I’m much more interested in who they offer arby to, and where those guys go. You think Pudge would accept, even knowing that he’d be behind Posada on the depth chart? I figure he can get two years somewhere else, with the dearth of catching.

I figure they offer arby to Bobby, Moose and Andy. Jason can get two years somewhere else after showing he can play the field and stay healthy for a whole season…I think I’d offer him arbitration as well.

          • A.D.

I would be shocked if Pudge accepted, he came over and split time with Jose Molina, with Jorge coming back, not the situation he wants to be in, he’ll go elsewhere to start.

  • E-ROC

Mike, what’s next for RiverAveBlues since the Yanks’ season is over?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

We go into hibernation. After the World Series, RAB goes dark until ST starts.

Okay seriously, I’m not sure. Same stuff really. News, analysis, we’ll have general postseason game threads, prospect profiles, that sort of stuff.

      • kenthadley

        Mike,
glad you will not disappear….this has been a great vehicle for NYY fans, and I look forward to the off season as a participant…..you and the group do a great job.

      • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos

        River Avenue Hookers.

  • Ivan

Fuck you Bears, gotta say that.

  • Ivan

So I ask, who’s in better shape right now, The Mets or Yankees?

    Gottta be the Yankees No?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Gotta be the Yanks I’d believe.

    • mustang

      Yanks

    • Hitman

The Mets really only have one area to address and that’s their bullpen. Their rotation is fairly set with Maine, Santana, Pelfrey and Perez if they re-sign him. Niese can be their number 5. They also have 3 possible rookie first baseman that can take over first base when Delgado leaves. The yankees on the other hand have a slew of problems like their rotation, their offense, outfield situation and just their overall aging team.

      • AndrewYF

They also have one real outfielder, and no second baseman. Oh, and their catcher is god-awful.

Not to mention not one single person in their historically bad bullpen.

However: they do play in the AAAA league, with their only real competition the Phillies, so they do have an easier time than the Yankees, who play in – by very, very far – the toughest division in baseball.

        • JohnnyC

Hitman must be channeling Omar. Good luck on establishing the Mets’ “brand.” Can’t believe that was his response to 2 consecutive collapses.

        • A.D.

Marlins will be tougher next year, so their division will be tougher, the Braves could do something, but I doubt it.

As the stat I saw yesterday, the Mets big 5 (Delgado, Wright, Reyes, Beltran, and Johan) all played 159+ games/made all their starts, despite that they didn’t make the playoffs. You take the same for the Yanks (Jeter, A-Rod, Abreu, Posada, and Wang) all of those guys missed some time with injury except Abreu, with Wang and Posada missing the entire 2nd half, and we have the same record as the Mets.

Figuring Hughes and IPK can’t pitch worse next year (i.e. they can’t get less wins) and Pelfrey could. Net in net, I’d take the Yanks

  • pat

o god for some reason i didnt change the channel after the bears iggles game and now francesa ison ripping the mets saying they need to move either wright or reyes and bring in a bigtime veteran and turn leadership over to him. great idea

    • AndrewYF

      I hope you’re being sarcastic.
