Game 146: A day game on the west coast? Madness!
ByLast game of a 10-day road trip, hopefully the boys can head into the final series ever at Yankee Stadium on a nice little two game winning streak.
1. Damon, CF – why not just play Gardner in CF the rest of the year?
2. Jeter, SS
3. Abreu, RF
4. A-Rod, 3B
5. Giambi, 1B
6. Nady, LF
7. Matsui, DH
8. Cano, 2B
9. Molina, C
And on the mound, Mikey Moose Andy Pettitte.
Notes: Pudge and Torii Hunter have been suspended two games each for their little grab-ass session the other night, neither player will appeal … where the hell is Joba?

Gardner should def be in CF
especially since a day game after a night game is the perfect time to give some of the regulars a rest …
They want Damon to get his stats as high as possible. Wouldn’t surprise me if they traded him this winter. And they should. Sell high.
Mike, isn’t Pettitte pitching? Also, for anyone at work, there is now a “Mini Gameday” feature on MLB.com which opens as a much smaller window yet gives you all the same necessary game information. It’s quite awesome
Ya trade damon bring in manny and use gardner.. id like to see that
why not just play Gardner in CF the rest of the year?
why should they?
does anyone here really think Gardner will be the everyday CFer next year?
i understand that now is a good time to audition some guys, but i think the Yankees will get more value in the long run from letting Damon inflate his numbers and trading him, than giving 60 ABs to Brett Gardner.
Gardner is basically a poor man’s Reggie Willits. in other words, he’s a 4th OFer.
Poor man’s Willits. Wow. I don’t disagree with you, but the fact that Willits might have a poor man’s equivalent is just scary.
You really think a GM is going to give up more because Damon got a few more doubles at the end of the year 306/379/460 with 28 steals is pretty good, in fact Damon has really only has 3 seasons better than that in his career, and for those he was 30 and younger.
On top of that showcase damon for what….opening up a spot to start Brett Gardner who you don’t know what he’s got from not playing him at the end of the season?
yes, i forgot that Damon and Gardner are the only 2 CFers in MLB.
well them and melk are the only ones on the Yanks, and FA CF doesn’t look too good. And I haven’t seen that many CF rumored to be available
Pettitte is pitching.
That would not have been a double if it was anyone other then Abreu out there
There would have been a play at second. What’s even more disturbing is that Abreu plays a deep rightfield. His defense has deteriorated so much that balls fall in front of him AND go over his head. Not to mention he has limited lateral range as well.
Great upcoming pitching rotation for the Tampa Bay series.
Do we really need Pettitte back for next season?
depends on what else they do and what Moose does.
Pettitte is still going to give the Yankees over 200 innings this year.
that is VERY valuable, even if the quality is down.
the problem is that he has pitched like a 3/4 starter and they were counting on him to be a 2/3.
if he’ll take a paycut, and they sign Sabathia, i have no problem with Pettitte as the #4 starter.
Erin Andrews !
I really am extremely sad that we are out of it …. Its hard for me to enjoy such games
end of the season was boring anyways.Everyone clinches and theres nothing to look forward too. Sunday is when the real games are. Its football season, watch the giants/jets.
The rationale is that he’ll be a solid 4 or 5 in our rotation (based on this year’s underwhleming performance) but a 4 or 5 making 8-13 million makes very little sense. On the other hand, it makes as much sense as the Yankees allowing Ponson and Rasner to make more than 30 starts between them this season.
I’m sure Pettitte wouldn’t take less than 10 million, so what’s the point? 10+ million for a 5th starter is absurd, even for the Yankees.
Precisely. Even giving Moose a 2 year deal needs to be thought long and hard about.
I’d only bring Moose back on a 1 year deal. And I wouldn’t go over 8 million for Pettitte.
Then Moose will probably sign somewhere else. Based on this season, a lot of NL teams will make multi-year offers. The Phillies are a no-brainer.
Then let him go. Last time we gave Moose a 2 year deal, he had an absolutely horrible first year. We can’t afford that.
Its not that absurd in relative if its around 10-11:
Silva is making 11 next year
Washburn is making 10.35,
Arroyo is making 9.5 in ‘09 and 11 in ‘10
personally I’d rather have Pettite than any of those guys
I thought pudge would get more because if you look he pushed the umpire. How did Lackey get involved.
A guy hitting under .200 with a double. Good job Pettitte.
You have to love the Yankees and their dumb mistakes. Oh no, look at that, Jeter gets a hit. This team is great.
*crickets*
Mike A. should the majority of writing for River Ave. Blues. Mike A. is a very talented writer, with solid grammar, whereas Ben K. is borderline awful in both regards.
Ben K.’s posts are headache promoters. It’s similar to conversing with someone, as their cell phone repeatedly fades in and out of reception. Or like trying to comprehend a stuttering drunk attempting to make a valid point.
Just being honest, no offense meant. This website is great, but would be much better if Mike A. would do the majority of writing.
wtf?
I think your run-on sentences, multiple unnecessary comments and sentence fragments defeat your point. Show me my grammar errors, and I’ll be happy to fix them. But it’s my guess that you can’t.
Ben, you also smell like cheese and your mother was a parrot. I hate you with every bone of my body.
Great work, though, keep it up.
are you serious????
If Pettitte loses this game vs this lineup that the Angels put out today, he seriously needs to think about retiring….
Over Abreu’s head…again. Manny’s defense sucks but it’s still better than this. Just sayin’.
Embarrassing.
Defense isn’t important, as long as the guys can hit, right?
Im serious though about Pettitte, this is ridiculous. The Angels have basically a AAA lineup today. He must be hurt cause if not then for as much as he wants to pitch in the new Yankee Stadium, too bad.
Wish I could disagree, but struggling against this craptastic Angels lineup is pretty brutal.
Only reason Nady and Matsui whiffed there was because they realized scoring was futile with Giambi clogging up the bases.
Pete Abe haters, have at it:
UPDATE, 5:03 p.m.: Cano is now 2 for his last 24. I predicted before this season that the Yankees would not make the playoffs, but it would be a step back to take two step forward because they would develop their young players. Instead their young players have gone in reverse under the new manager and coaching staff. Cano, Cabrera, Kennedy, Betemit, etc.
That’s the worse part of this, they have done nothing to improve their status for 2009.
UPDATE, 4:40 p.m.: Here’s an easy prediction for you: A-Rod will lead the AL in homers. Carlos Quentin has 36 and is out for the season. Miguel Cabrera and Alex have 33 and Jermaine Dye 32. Alex has 16 pressure-free games left, 10 at home. He’ll crush the ball. Bet he hits 37 or 38.
Are you kidding me? I’m just flabbergasted right now, this dude isn’t even hiding it anymore. Why does he hate Alex Rodriguez and Joe Girardi so much, why? Also, LoL @ his dumb ass thinking the Yankees’ priorities included the development of Wilson Betemit.
Damnit Jamal i posted his 5:03 post right before u!!! Stealing my thunder!!!!
Although he might have a point with Cano maybe….
Because they don’t give him good copy, like Torre did or Giambi does. He couldn’t be more ignorant if he tried.
You stay classy LoHud.
This season would have gone so much better if Wilson Betemit developed more.
Do you mean your “grammatical errors”, Ben? See, that’s exactly what I’m talking about. I don’t think you’re a stupid person, I just think you’re borderline awful when it comes to writing. If you want to take offense to that, so be it; it was just a simple suggestion from one of your many readers.
If falsely critiquing my posts makes you feel better, suit yourself. But I’m not the one running a website here, you are. Mike A. writing the majority of your material, would do River Ave. Blues a lot of good; he’s better than most professional writers, you simply are not.
If you take offense to that, again, I apologize.
I don’t want to sound like I’m tooting my own horn here, but I’ve won awards for my writing before (but not in this forum). I’ve been published in numerous places; I’ve worked with a lot of editors; and you’re the first person who’s ever said my writing is “borderline awful.”
You’re also not honest enough to leave a valid e-mail address or bring this issue up in a proper forum (i.e. e-mail). So until you do that, I will take offense at your inappropriate, disrespectful and mean comments. I don’t know what your problem is, but until you contact me personally, you’re no longer commenting here.
I think the vast majority of the site’s readers would disagree with you. While I appreciate the compliment, by no stretch of the imagination am I a better writer than Ben. My value lies in that I’m a vault of the most useless baseball knowledge ever.
In the future, if you have any issues with the site/writers, please email us via the links on the left sidebar. This is not the proper forum for such criticism.
You know what’s funny, George? You. Because your posts are so full of shit that it’s almost laughable. You’re praising Mike for his grammar in a post in which the sentences are all comma-splice sentences. (No offense, Mike. I’m just using you to make a point.)
Then you call Ben’s proper criticism of your post a “[false] critiquing” of your work? Come on, man. Let me fix your first post:
And your second one:
I don’t even know where to begin with this one. What the fuck is up that comma after material? It’s not separating a clause from anything else; it’s in the middle of your damn sentence. Additionally, the second and last sentences in that paragraphs are both comma-splice. You can’t create a grammatically correct sentence simply by adding a comma.
In conclusion, you should probably STFU since it’s clear you have no idea what you’re talking about.
Damn I always use commas that way!!! But I dont rip other people’s grammar cause lord knows mine is horrible.
What the hell is a comma-splice?
Putting two sentences together sans a conjunction (and, but, etc.)
Example: Peter Abraham is a fucking idiot, I really despise him as a human being.
Ah ok. Shit, I do that all the time.
As do I, as do I.
I’m FedExing all you cheeky bastards a copy of Eats, Shoots, and Leaves post-haste.
For whatever its worth, to me BOTH Ben and Mike do a tremendous job.
Compared to most fan blogs around the internet for all teams and sports, this one is by far one of the best in not just the content but in the way it is delivered.
Joseph’s a dirty pig-fucker, though. We all agree on that, right?
Is there any reason to have Pettitte, Ponson and Pavano (the 3 P’s) start anymore this season???? Moose, Aceves and i say call-up Wright, Hughes and IPK when their playoffs are done and start them.
Fu Quilan
Ok gentleman off to my mri…. hope we pull this out
MRI?? Hope everything is OK.
The “failure of Hughes and Kennedy”? Jesus, Michael Kay, a bit dramatic, no?
He’s also touting the Red Sox’s approach as well. This is semi-sickening.
And the unparalleled success of Jacoby Ellsbury and Clay Buchholz.
Problem is Lester and Pedroia.
Yeah, plus Craig Hansen, Bryce Cox and Manny Delcarmen are going to be beasts out of the bullpen. then someday Dernell Stenson’s ghost will take over DH from Ortiz.
Okay, that last part might have gone too far.
Yeah but it doesnt matter. Lester and Pedroia were pretty vital to a WS winning team, and look at what they are doing this season. Like most analysts say, if 1 out of 5 prospects work out, youve done a good job.
April of 2008 aside, the Yankees have Robinson Cano, Chien-Ming Wang, and Joba Chamberlain as successful portions of their projected 25-man roster. Jose Veras and Edwar Ramirez have looked damn good for the majority of the season.
No I know Im just saying why people constantly give credit to Boston and their prospects thats all. Lester and Pedroia, plus i guess u can throw in Youkilis and what Ellsbury, as fluke as it may have been, did last October. You cant argue with a championship.
and pedroia is having a career year.
Coke and Marte as the 2 lefties out of the Yankees pen next season???
Whats up, just came back from work.
The Yankees suck, Cano’s a bonehead, A-Rod’s unclutch, the usual.
Pettitte sucks.
And Ben’s a contemptible, drooling, lobotomized idiot. Don’t forget that one, that’s the most important lesson of the day.
Any dumb lohud comments?
http://riveraveblues.com/2008/.....ent-153189
Not surprise who said. Betemit is now considered a prospect.
GOLD
Guerrero had no chance.
This tidbit from MLBTR gets you all excited:
“Rickie Weeks could be the odd man out in the Milwaukee infield next year.”
until you realize what precedes it:
“[Jon] Heyman wonders if
Speaking of acquiring some young talent, any takers for Josh Willingham? He has two more years of arbitration left after this season, would the Marlins put a high price-tag on him? Depending on the price in a trade, he could be a better option than signing Bobby Abreu to deal that has him in pinstripes at 37-years-of-age.
You have to close your cite tags with [/cite].
And if there’s anyone in the Marlins OF worth trading for, it’s Mr. Hermida.
Yeah, but I was looking for a cheaper option than Jeremy Hermida. I don’t think it’s a need for the Yankees to trade for Hermida, therefore the price for him would be unnecessary for the Yankees to pay, in my opinion.
You’re right, I don’t see why the Marlins would trade Willingham if they weren’t getting anything worthwhile. He is still affordable for two more seasons. Josh Willingham is certainly not a player that you trade any top prospects for.
I’ve been on the Willingham as a decent cheap option bandwagon for a while…
I played against him in college. He didn’t strike me as a guy that was unreal talented, just a great player that I can’t ever remember that swung at a ball out of the strike zone.
Willingham has been pretty bad this season. Plus defensively he is pretty bad too. He is a converted Catcher if im not mistaken.
Just as I say that, Willingham hits a double to give the Marlins the lead vs Philly in the 8th.
Believe it or not, he played SS in college.
Scott Shields is built for Joe Torre.
Yankees offense came to play today.
WOW Angels bullpen today 3 inn, 0 h, 0 r, 5 k and now comes K-Rod.
What about Miguel Montero from the D-Backs.
I love how a scrub dominates us. Bobby sucks as in RF. That Vlad hit should have been caught.
SV’s are like wins for closers. K-Rod other #’s are not as great.
Vince Young needs to stop being a sissy and man up.
Remember when everybody was killing the Texas for taking Mario Williams with the first pick.
Yeah, I know. I didn’t really like Bush or Young that much before that draft. Mario Williams was and is really a good pass rusher. Can play inside or outside. Worked out well. Schaub is overpaid.
Eh, why not.
Let’s go Yanks!
Rally going.
steal second, why not, got nuthing to lose.
nevermind.
Nice swing there, Hideki.
Oh, wait.
I think you meant to say:
Nice, swing, there! Hideki:
Oh; wait?
Oh well, yankees try to rally but to no prevail.
Runner-up for LoHud’s “Stupid Comment of the Day”:
hank hal September 10th, 2008 at 6:36 pm
Brandon was right, the Nady trade was awful. I thought he was a nutcase for criticizing it and his love of Tabata, but he proved to be right.
I don’t even read the comments anymore. I just check for news.
Bush league celebration.
Only a couple of more teams to surpass to become one of the worst 15 teams! Keep it up guys.
