Game 147: A must-win for Moose

By

The Quest for Twenty continues this afternoon as Mike Mussina takes the mound in search of his 18th victory of the season. For Moose, in his career-long quest for a 20-win season, today is something of a must-win. He’s set to make three more starts this season, but to expect him to go 3-0 might be asking too much. If he wins today, his quest will be that much easier.

On the season, Mussina is 3-0 with a 1.96 ERA against the Rays. He’s allowed 17 hits and just three walks in 18.1 innings. Hopefully, his dominance against Tampa will continue. He faces James Shields who is 0-2 against the Yanks this year but with a sub-3.00 ERA.

This afternoon starts at 1:05 p.m., and it’s on YES. Mike will have the nightcap game thread later. That one’s on My9.

Damon CF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Giambi 1B

Matsui DH
Cano 2B

Yankee Notes: Phil Hughes and David Robertson have rejoined the Yanks. Hughes pitched last night and is lined up to make the start on Wednesday.

Update by Mike (1:10pm): A-Rod scratched with a stiff neck. Nady’s cleaning up, Ransom’s playing third & batting 7th. Ouch for Betemit.

Orestes Destrade is a cool dude. His conversation with Eric about Manny was hilarious.

“tampa bay k’s” kay, you are a silly bastard

  3. Jamal G. says:

Early favorite for the dumb LoHud comment of the day:

    Mike September 13th, 2008 at 11:55 am

If our AAA team can beat Price, I’m sure he’s not going to be as dominant as he has been talked up to be.

This is almost as idiotic as Chris Russo downplaying Joba Chamberlain’s amateur success as a starter by saying he was beaten by Manhattan.

    • Steve H says:

Does whoever made that comment realize that every great pitcher, EVER, has been beaten by a minor league team? That is definitely a top contender for dumb comment of the day/week/month!

  4. joe says:

Don’t rush it, its still early and we got a double header. The lohud commenters have a lot of time still

  5. Tripp says:

Johnny Gomes and his sweet .182 average. F-ing hate that guy.

  6. mustang says:

“Phil Hughes and David Robertson have rejoined the Yanks. Hughes pitched last night and is lined up to make the start on Wednesday.”

I’m very happy to see Hughes back, but damn by threads here you would think he just won his first MLB playoff game. Hopefully his success will follow him to the major’s good luck to both.

  7. Marc says:

    What happened with betemit?

  8. Jamal G. says:

    Paul Byrd’s line against TOR: 5.0-IP, 9-H, 5-R/ER

    Fucking Cashman.

  9. Jamal G. says:

Eh, take ‘em however you can get ‘em, Jetes.

  10. Pedro says:

Another great display of offense by our beloved Yankees, I see.

  11. Pedro says:

I seriously can’t wait ’till Giambi is no longer around.

  12. Pedro says:

    See what I’m saying.

  13. Pedro says:

Does Bobby Abreu ever get to a ball that’s not hit right at him?

  14. BigBlueAL says:

Im assuming Tampa brought their brooms with them today.

  15. Mike Pop says:

Despite what Moose has done this year i dont want him back next year

  16. Mickey Rivers Rules says:

It would have been a nice gesture for A Hole to have played this game in hopes of helping the sputtering Yankee offense and maybe helping Mussina get a win. Take the night game off instead.

  17. Smitt Dog says:

A 7 pitch inning, I can’t say anything more about it. They really need to address that organizationally going forward. Seeing pitches is a tried and true method when facing starters with their good stuff.

  18. Smitt Dog says:

Are these the ’08 Yankees or the ’62 Mets?

  19. Pedro says:

Exactly why we would be better off with them taking the day off.

  20. BigYank1 says:

Its also nice to see Cano grinding out at bats:)!

They really are mailing it in now.

  21. BigBlueAL says:

Im sorry but i know these games dont matter and the season is over already, but this is still fuckin embarrassing.

Its a shame the Stadium is going out with this pathetic group playing there. Call me whatever you want but honestly Ive never disliked a Yankees team as much as this one. Im old enough to remember those large 80′s-early 90′s teams too and probably since I was still too young to understand how bad they were I didnt hate them, but this current group makes me sick.

There I vented, my rant is over. Time to check my fantasy football teams to make sure my lineups are set correctly for tomorrow….

    • pat says:

houston/baltimore game has been postponed for a later date

      • BigBlueAL says:

Yeah Ive read that. I really only have 1 team I care about since it is in a 12-team league where everybody put in 50 bucks and I dont have a Raven or Texan.

Pretty crazy that the roof got damaged at Reliant Stadium but apparently from what Ive read Minute Maid Park is fine.

  22. Pedro says:

What was he thinking? Shaquille O’neal covering first?

  23. Joseph M says:

This could cost Girardi his job, if the team looks like it’s just mailing it in the sense might be that they don’t respect him. I’m starting to wonder if the Yanks might actually consider someone like Bobby Valentine for the job should he leave Japan (remember Gene was sent over to “scout” and there have been reports that Valentine is having problems with the ownership of the team he works for).

    Just a thought.

    • BigBlueAL says:

It’ll be VERY interesting if Cashman doesnt stay as GM who replaces him and if it is someone from outside of the organization who knows. I could care less if he stays or is fired. My biggest complain is if Torre was still the manager and this team was doing this he would be so ripped and torn apart it wouldnt be funny. Girardi to me has gotten a major pass but time will tell I guess…

    • Pedro says:

It feels like the team quit on Girardi a while ago.

  24. BigBlueAL says:

Amazing what playing defense can do for a team.

  25. BigYank1 says:

I don’t know if I won’t Mussina back or not. Is his success this season for real or is he doing it with smoke and mirrors?

With his fastball now at 86mph, he has to be perfect. Can he do it again, will he take a 1 year contract?

Who would you rather have, Mussina or Burnett?

    • Steve H says:

Mussina by a landslide. Moose for 1 or 2 years at 12 mil, or AJ at 5/70? No question I don’t want to be buried a long term deal to an average pitcher.

      • BigBlueAL says:

Agreed. Although Id take obviously CC or Sheets instead. Interesting name who I believe is a FA is Derek Lowe. Wouldnt mind signing him if possible.

        • Steve H says:

Agree, AL East and playoff experience for Lowe, the one concern for me would be his nightlife. I know it was a huge issue in Boston (see 4.47 and 5.43 era’s his last 2 years there). He may have matured, and he’ll take the ball every 5 days, so I’d definitely take him over AJ.

  26. BigBlueAL says:

Hey Jamal, if your still here, have you seen or will see Righteous Kill??? I know you watch alot of movies from what I can tell. Anyone else seen/will be seeing the movie????

  27. BigYank1 says:

Toronto IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
    Burnett (W, 18-10) 6.0 3 1 0 3 6 0 4.19

Here are AJ’s numbers against Boston today. He has been tough against them this year too.

  28. Pedro says:

At least Jeter showed up today.

  29. BigYank1 says:

‘Hey Jamal, if your still here, have you seen or will see Righteous Kill??? I know you watch alot of movies from what I can tell. Anyone else seen/will be seeing the movie????’

I saw it last night. It was good but not great. Go see it, its entertaining enough with Pacino and DeNiro performances.

  30. Pedro says:

Why not shut Matsui down. Let him have his surgery. He’s been awful since returning to play.

  31. Jamal G. says:

I have a question for the people who are proclaiming that the Yankees have given up and don’t care: How do you explain today’s game at Fenway Park? The Red Sox have everything to play for and they got their ass handed to them. The Yankees don’t have much to play for and got their ass handed to them. Why can’t the Yankees just lose a game? Why does it have to be that they lost respect for Joe Girardi or some underlying reason?

Reading too much into things is just as bad as believing everything you see or hear when taken to an extreme level, such as this.

    • Steve H says:

They must have quit on Francona.

      • Steve says:

I overheard Josh Beckett say before the game “I wish I could quit you, Terry!”

Never would have guessed he was a fan of “Brokeback Mountain”.

    • Ivan says:

Never overreact to things, especially things that look worse than it really does.

    • BigBlueAL says:

I would agree with you except for the fact Boston could say that for today’s game cause you know they are in the playoffs. They have won more than enough games where losing the 1st game of a DH is acceptable. This is hardly the first time the Yankees have had a game like this this season.

Plus as you know I love Torre so any chance to take a shot at Girardi for managing a 4th place team hey why not. Imagine if Torre was still managing the Yankees and the Yankees were in 4th place……

      • Ivan says:

So other words ya being bias to Girardi.

        • BigBlueAL says:

Yup. Again my biggest problem is the fact that its OK for Girardi cause of all the excuses and give him another year blah blah blah. But again if Torre was the manager My God I cant imagine the backlash/criticism he would be getting for managing a 4th place team who has absolutely collapsed in the 2nd half. Hell he got ripped the past few years and they at least made the damn playoffs and he had won 4 championships with the Yankees. Girardi has none of that but its OK give him time. Bullshit.

  32. patrick says:

what are the chances tampa doesn’t pick up crawford’s option?

  33. Jamal G. says:

    I guess they haven’t quit.

  34. Fabio says:

It looks like the Yankees are going to have a lot of picks in the next draft. Abreu, Mussina, Pettitte, Marte are type A, Giambi is a type B and Pudge is currently a type B, but he is next in line to become a type A. Does anyone know if we can lose compensation picks with free agent signings or only our own picks? With the Cole pick, we should have close to 4 first round choices.

I hope next year draft class is good, but I have no idea, can anyone tell me?

    • Steve says:

Agree on Abreu, Moose, Pudge and Giambi. They’re all gone. Abreu is already saying he wants 3 years, Moose will likely get 3 years on the open market and the other two are way past their prime.

I don’t think Pettitte will pitch elsewhere. Its pretty much Yanks or retirement according to him. So if he doesn’t sign elsewhere, you won’t get any picks from another team. I also believe the Yanks want him back, but at a reduced rate. I think Andy will agree and be our 4th starter next year.

Despite his struggles here, I think the Yanks will bring Marte back. They’ve been after him for years and they won’t let 14 IP as a Yank determine his fate. I could see either picking up the option or even extending him 2/9 or 3/12. They’ve also had all sorts of trouble finding lefties for the bullpen in recent years, they’d be foolish to let a top lefty like him get away. His role would be more specialized next year, and he’s been great in his career against lefties.

      • Fabio says:

I didn’t mean to imply all of them would leave. And I would like to have Moose back in a 1 or 2 year deal. I also wouldn’t decline Marte’s option, but I hope they don’t use him as a Loogy, he can get righties out and shouldn’t be usde so sparsely.

    • cult of basebaal says:

      compensation picks are protocted.

  35. Bonos says:

The draft is supposed to be pretty weak, but is that the first 10 or overall hard to say at this time.

    • Steve says:

They say that almost every year. The MLB draft isn’t as simple as other sports, teams will take players they think will become big time players down the road, so they’re always borrowing from the future every year.

Many top players get drafted multiple times before actually signing with a team. Scott Bittle was drafted in the 46th round in 2007, and then in the 2nd round this year. Yanks did it this year with Lassiter, if he played college ball next year he could have very well been a top 100 draft pick, maybe even a first rounder. But they offered him some cash to go early, and he accepted.
