Game 154: Going Out With A Bang

By Mike Axisa

And so it begins, the final series at Yankee Stadium. It’s only fitting that the Orioles would close out the Stadium, since the Yankees’ franchise came about when the original Baltimore Orioles moved to New York in 1903. The Orioles became the New York Highlanders, who then became the Yankees in 1913. The rest is history.

If Mike Mussina’s send off was any indication of what we can expect these last few games, it’s going to be one exciting weekend. Sit back, relax, and enjoy Yankee baseball the next three days. They won’t disappoint us.

1. Damon, DH
2. Jeter, SS
3. Abreu, RF
4. A-Rod, 3B
5. Giambi, 1B
6. Nady, LF
7. Cano, 2B – .500-.545-.600 since the benching
8. Pudge, C
9. Gardner, CF – .364-.417-.455 with 2 SB in his last 3 starts

And on the mound, Carl Pavano.

Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

Gardner is just .001 point away from being at a season high.
Good luck Brett!

Ivan says:

It seem that Cano has bounce back pretty well from the benching. Obviously he he has his new stance at the plate that seem to help him as well. Also made a very good play last night on D. Cano is gonna blow up next season I know it.

giselle says:

i love me some robbie cano. i agree that he’s gonna break out next season. he’s too good of a player to suck for long.

AndrewYF says:

I asked for and received a number 24 jersey for my birthday in the beginning of May, for Cano is my favorite player (in fact, my birthday is the same day as his major league debut). I’m certainly not giving up on him.

Ivan says:

The orioles have three guys who can have 50 doubles this season. That’s impressive.

Mike A. says:

Way to jinx it. Jerk.

Ivan says:

Ivan says:

Gee how many of Pedroia doubles are because of Fenway.

Manimal says:

Michael Kay. We know. Your not a fan of it.

Mike A. says:

Brett Gardner makes shit happen.

Ivan says:

Good throw by Gardner.

Manimal says:

Brett Gardner doing his Melky Cabrera impression.

Manimal says:

Was anyone else surprised that the ball DIDNT hit Pavano?

Ivan says:

I don’t know about you guys but it’s quite hard to imagine Cashman in another organization.

Mike A. says:

I said that about Andy Pettitte.

Ivan says:

Yea but at least he came back and he’s pitching the final home game in yankee stadium.

Ivan says:

I will say this, everytime I saw him pitch with the Astros, I was like in my heart and mind saying to myself, he’s on that team or he didn’t look right and etc.

Mike A. says:

Liz has a 6.90 ERA this year, so you know what that means … 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K

Manimal says:

Thats too high of a WHIP. No walks 2 hits.

Ivan says:

Jeter you could of taken a pitch or two.

Mike A. says:

Past a lunging Jeter…

Ivan says:

Wow I,ve heard stories of how crazy New york was during the 70’s.

Pedro says:

I refuse to believe Pavano is the best option we have.

Ivan says:

Hey Mike will they ever be a Triple Crown winner in baseball at least years from now in your opinion.

Mike A. says:

I think someone will do it, eventually. Then everyone will just assume he’s on steroids. Pujols has the best chance I think. A-Rod has the ability do it, but freakin’ Ichiro hits like, .360 every year.

giselle says:

what about the pitching triple crown (ERA, Wins, K’s). I bet Peavy does it. Or did he already? Johan could do it, too if the mets bullpen didnt blow every lead.

Mike A. says:

Peavy did it last year. Others have done it recently too, I’m pretty sure Johan did the year he won his first Cy.

giselle says:

cool. who’d do it in the AL? Halladay?

Mike A. says:

He’s definitely a candidate, as in Beckett. Joba too, in time.

giselle says:

i wonder what type of contract pavano will get in the offseason. 3 years, $18 million?

Manimal says:

1 year 8 million with a team option for a second around the same.

Ivan says:

Hell no. He’ll probably get an incentive ladid one year contract.

giselle says:

incentive-laden? yea, i can see teams not giving him over 2 years. but i doubt he’s gonna have a repeat of all those injuries. then again, what do i know?

Mike A. says:
Ivan says:

Talk about a huge change in the rotation for Toronto next season. McGowan out with shoulder surgery, TJS for Marcum and possibly losing Burnett to FA.

Steve says:

Wow, lots of major arm injuries in TOR. Last year it was BJ Ryan, this year McGowan, and now Marcum.

Let me take a wild guess. They don’t believe in any of that fancy “pitch count” stuff. Can’t be babying those pitchers, let em throw and throw to build up their arms.

Ivan says:

Yankees making Liz look like Pedro.

Ivan says:

True or False: Jesus Montero has the best bat in the Sal League?

Mike A. says:

I say true, although I can certainly see arguments for Heyward and Burgess.

Ivan says:

Agreed, I thnk Heyward has the best pure tools in the Sal League. Love his potential.

Burgess scares me. Power is tremendous, but K’s a ton and is raw.

Matt G. says:

He performed the best for sure, especially considering that he’s 18. But Bradley Suttle is a better pure hitter than Jesus.

Ivan says:

Really?

The only thing Suttle has over Montero is plate Disipline, other than that, Jesus crushes him in every aspect with the Bat.

giselle says:

god i love robinson cano.

giselle says:

whoa. what is up with gardner’s bat?! he keeps throwing it around!

Mike A. says:

What is that, 3 thrown bats in the last 2 days for Gardner?

Ivan says:

Gardner driving the ball opposite way.

Mike A. says:

What did I say? Brett Gardner makes shit happen.

giselle says:

nice. we didnt give up after being down 2 runs early in the game. this is new…

Bill N says:

Brett meet pinetar
Pinetar meet Brett.
Nice hit BG

Mike A. says:

Joe said he’s sitting about 10 feet away from where Gardner’s bat hit.

Ivan says:

I’ll let Gardner steal here.

Mike A. says:

Liz doing his best Damon impression on that pickoff throw.

Ivan says:

Liz reminds me of so much of Volquez.

Ivan says:

WOW. A-Rod has asmany 35+Homer seasons as Ruth and more than Aaron and Schmdit and A-Rod is only 33.

Mike A. says:

Holy shit. Brett Gardner makes shit happen.

Ivan says:

wow what a tremendous play from Gardner. Took a homer from him.

giselle says:

brett gardner makes shit happen. like i said.

Ivan says:

Ivan says:

You know what I wanna see in baseball, like a Outfielder makes a similar play like Gardner, and the outfielder doesn’t show the ball, everybody thinks it’s gone and runner jogging around the bases and as soon as he touches HP, the outfielder shows the ball he caught and gasses everybody.

Ivan says:

Jeter trying to top Gardner’s play.

Patrick T says:

Bleh, Giambi clogging the basepaths again.

Steve says:

If he’s on 2nd base, he really isn’t in scoring position for most singles.

Think about that for a minute. That completely screws up at least 4 major hitting statistics for the guy hitting behind him and the team.

Ivan says:
Steve says:

Ivan says:

That out shows ya why Cano is gonna have a big year next season.

Even Girardi said that Cano has hit the most LD this season.

Mike A. says:

An unclutch induce a WP by A-rod.

Joey says:

unclutch BB to go along with it

Chip says:

I tell ya what, I want to see Gardner in center next year even if he does hit .250. With his speed on the bases, he pretty much hits a double every time he walks or singles. Sounds pretty useful with the top of the lineup coming up!

Ivan says:

Singleton Jinx Huff.

Chip says:

Coke is a god among men, he could push his way into the rotation next year if he keeps this up

Ivan says:

Mets can sure use a Phil Coke in their Bullpen.

Steve says:

The Mets could use a Diet Coke in their bullpen.

Ivan says:

Brett says:

first wow i hate watching games on the orioles broadcast (I go to school in maryland)
and what happened to coke he used to be perfect, two baserunners thats simply unacceptable from him, even if one is basically giambis fault

Chip says:

That sure was a quick pull on Coke. He must not have looked sharp?

Mike A. says:

A little wild. Couple of righties coming up.

Ivan says:

LoL at that yankee fan.

Joey says:

That guy they keep showing is starting to annoy me

Manimal says:

I hate when they show the same kid over and over. we get it. Hes a cute fan whos daddy payed 10000 for his ticket. Big deal.

Mike A. says:

If I ever see that douchebag at a game, I’m going to kick him right in the nuts. Catch a HR like everyone else asshole, stop making a mockery of it.

Manimal says:

I was playing NHL 09 and FINALLY made it to first string center in the NHL. Anyways that Gardner catch was freaking amazing. He is seriously doing his impression of melky. Except he drove in a run.

Joey says:

How does it compare to 08? Whats new/different?

Manimal says:

HOLY SHIT. Theres basically a whole mode where you only control one guy on the ice. and in multiplayer theres this whole web of leagues of 6 on 6 multiplayer. Its AWESOME.

Joey says:

I know I’ll get it eventually, school has me freakin busy at the moment though. Even watching Yankee games I’m studying and shit… *sigh

Manimal says:

I hear ya man, Yesturday I was doing espanol homework while watching the yankees so I found it fitting to press the SAP button and listen in spanish at the same time.

Mike A. says:

I’m doing regular old Dynasty mode. It’s freaking nuts. I haven’t played a hockey game since NHL 98, but I’m getting a good feel for it. One day I’ll be cutting people up like this:

http://www.easportsworld.com/en_US/video/680639

Manimal says:

Unfortunately Marte-Joba-Mo combination for 7-8-9 is probably how the bullpen will start the year

Manimal says:

wtf? “next year”, sorry.

Geno says:
Chip says:

Because the Marte-Melancon-Mo combo would be more fun and the Joba-Mo combo would be great if Joba started the game :)

Chip says:

Is this “stretch out the bullpen” night?

Chip says:

I’d just like to point out how unfair it is that the Yankees have just thrown four straight pitchers out there throwing 95+ mph! And of course when Joba gets through this, Rivera will be out there to make it five. Additionally, two of these guys are lefties.

I can’t wait for next season

Ivan says:

Joba is a nasty mothafucker.

Mike A. says:

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand exhale.

steve (different one) says:

what an odd argument from Singleton.

Mike A. says:

Well, if they decide to leave him in the rotation just so that people know what days he’s pitching, that’s perfectly fine with me.

Seriously, does he actually think the Yankees are going to make a decision on their most prized young arm so the fans “know when he’s going to pitch”?

Old Ranger says:

Holy shit. Brett Gardner makes shit happen.

I like that!
Many people are getting on the Brett/Cano band wagon…that’s good. This is a small sample on Brett but, I still think he could make the team next year, at lest as a 4th OF…if not the starter in CF. Just look at all the runs he has saved the team and the games he has helped win.
Cano still has the sweet swing I saw in the minors, when he is playing right. I agree with him bouncing back next year, he is just to damm good not to.
Did anyone see Coke coming on like this, I sure didn’t? I really like to see a player doing well when he wasn’t expected to even be in AA/AAA this year…just great to see it.

Mike A. says:

Hooray for the fist pump.

Ivan says:

Joba just smoked them hitters.

Manimal says:

I missed the fist pump.

Chip says:

3IP 0H 0R 1BB 7K so far and the best reliever in history warming. Wow

Mike A. says:

Brian Cashman is an idiot.

Chip says:

Just think how good it would be if we hadn’t traded Hawkins :P

Steve says:

If we had 200 million to burn, the Yanks would never lose a game.

Chip says:

For the bullpen that is

Ivan says:

Good to see the young guys playing well. Whether it’s Cano or Gardner or of course Chamberlain.

steve (different one) says:

man, i love Gardners defense, but he needs to fix that swing. he hits more weak pop-ups than anyone i’ve ever seen.

he needs to watch tapes of Ichiro. slap everything on the outer half to 3B/SS and start sprinting. anything on the inner half, he can try to turn on.

Chip says:

I sure hope that time with Kevin Long will help

Jake H says:

While watching this game I realized how much I dislike Pavano.

steve (different one) says:

i bet it was the fist pump to Gardner’s catch that pushed you over the edge. he looked douchey there.

Bonos says:

And another crappy at bat. Yankees 2008, it is to weep. The score is 3 – 2 dumbass, move the man over.

Ivan says:

Hopefully the yanks don’t make a trade like Seattle made with Baltimore.

Chip says:

I was afraid for a second that Cano was going to get another walk. I believe that’s one of the signs of the apocalypse isn’t it?

Ivan says:

Mets Bullpen blowing up right now.

Mike A. says:

At least they have teh Johan.

giselle says:

Ivan says:

steve (different one) says:

That should be the play to end the game Sunday night

Mac says:

That was awesome. Jeter!

Chip says:

What happened? (For those of us not lucky enough to be watching on TV)

steve (different one) says:

Ivan says:

Adam Jones and A-Jax are quite similar in size and skill set no?

Mike A. says:

That’s a real good comp. Jones is way better defensively though, and he has a better arm. He’ll be the best defensive outfielder in the AL with a year or too.

Steve says:

Better than Brett Gardner?

Old Ranger says:

Maybe a bit with the arm but, Brett is faster and plays a lot like Blair did for Balt., back in the “60s (7 or 8 Gold Gloves). Both of them could be great CF defenders.

Steve says:

I posted that half jokingly, but Brett’s fielding in CF has been amazing, and a real eye opener.

Stick said a month ago on Max Kellerman’s show he thinks Brett could be the BEST defensive CF in the AL within a few years. I had trouble believing that when he said it, but now I see what he was talking about.

steve (different one) says:

mo showboated a bit there, i enjoyed it

Ivan says:

Mo to me, might be the best combination with the fastball with Velocity, Movement and Command.

steve (different one) says:

i have no desire to see Brian Roberts come up

Ivan says:

well ya gonna be dissapointed.

steve (different one) says:

Mike A. says:

Brandon Fahey is one skinny mofo.

Brett says:

well that worked out fine

Chip says:

Well I suppose it’s the last weekend so we might as well make it interesting!

Mike A. says:

Mo’s like “bitches, it ain’t no thing.”

Ivan says:

I really feel Mo does that on purpose.

He makes ya feel ya got a chance, and like a cold hearted assassin, kills ya.

Ivan says:

No Kay, with Mo on the Mound, I wasn’t sweating.

steve (different one) says:

man, these yankees are awesome

Chip says:

Joey says:

Mike A. says:

The Angels are beating the Rangers 13-12. It’s the FIFTH inning.

Manimal says:

thats 2 really good offenses. Doesn’t surprise me. If Texas gets some pitching they could be a pretty good wildcard team for next year.

Chip says:
Manimal says:

And I worded it vaguely as “pitching” because they need bullpen and rotation.

Chip says:

Hahaha that’s very true. It seems like they can’t hit the jackpot on pitching to save themselves. They’ve tried developing it, trading for it and signing FA pitchers but absolutely nothing is working out. Kinda seems like the late 90’s Rockies who could run up the score on anybody but had zero pitching

Manimal says:

They would die for someone like Drob or Coke.

Manimal says:

OH SHIT, Sheff and Carmona went at it.

Manimal says:

That was crazy, Carmona put him in a Nolan ryan head lock and beat him on the top of the head. Crazy.
