Watching a guy with his pure speed is something I haven’t seen as a Yankee fan since . . . . . . thinking . . . . . . . gotta be Ricky Henderson in the mid 80s. He plays more shallow than anyone else has in years and STILL stole a HR the other night. He’s made at least 3-4 catches that would have been doubles that nobody else on the team makes.
If he could just get on base 1/3 of the time, I’ll take it. I don’t care what his BA is.
well that’s a terrible way of thinking then. If he hits .240/.333/.340, that’s a terrible starting CF, even if he plays great defense- because that would be Melky 2008 redux.
You don’t get the type of player he is. He’s not an OPS guy, he’s a table setter and off the charts defender at a key defensive position (CF).
The way you would judge him is OBP and more importantly, Runs scored. So far he’s had 8 BB and 19 hits as a pro, and scored 14 times. That’s scoring roughly half the times he’s been on base. If he does that over a full season where he gets 600 ABs, gets on base 200 times (I dont care how) and scores 100 runs, then he’s a keeper.
Again, if he gets on base 1/3 of the time and scores at the same rate he does now then he’s a very productive table setter. If Damon is still here he won’t leadoff, but you can carry a guy like him at the #9 hole.
an OBP of .333 is not very good. Look at Jacoby Ellsbury. He’s been dropped several times from the top of the lineup and I don’t think anybody is saying that Gardner can be as good as Ellsbury. Anyway, is his major league career, Gardner’s batting .190/.255/.250. Everybody should be seen through their stats, because no matter how fast you are, if you’re only getting on base 33% percent of the time and hit for no power, you’re not a good offensive player.
Guys, I know the season isn’t officially over but it feels like today is the last day of the season. I’d just like to say it’s been a disappointment but I’ve still enjoyed reading the comments on this blog. And heres for the offseason being a fun one, not a boring one like last season. Hopefully there will be enough topics to keep this place bouncin as usual.
Today … I consider myself … the luckiest motherfucker on the face of the Earth. I mean seriously, did you see how much they pay me, or the kind of ass I get?
well since im sitting in my apartment with no YES and no ESPN i look forward to puchasing this whole broadcast for 100 bucks when the yanks put it on dvd
Okay… so, now Cleveland beats Boston on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and we sweep Toronto… and we go into Fenway for a three game set down three!
I’m not sure if this is old news, but I was just reading a game recap and came across a quote of Bernie Williams’ that I think might be the most eloquent summary of the “it’s about the fans” theme we’ve all been talking about:
“I think it was more the people than the stadium,” former Yankees star Bernie Williams said. “People talk a lot about the magic and the aura, but what really made the stadium was the fans. Concrete doesn’t talk back to you. Chairs don’t talk back to you. It’s the people that are there, that root for you day in and day out, that’s what makes this place magical.”
As far as I’m concerned, you can’t say it more perfectly than that. One of the many reasons we’ve loved you all these years, Bernie.
This is something we’ll have for the rest of our lives. In 50 years we can all tell our grandkids about Yankee Stadium. I’m sad to see it go, but I’m happy because the celebration was so wonderful.
damn, crazy stuff man. good for you guys as usual phenomenal work with the site and all, i get to look forward to my office block being on lockdown for the next few days bc of the bush visit to ny
They really did it right tonite. Something we should all be proud of and happy with. This night was well done, and typifies what our organization is capable of when we do things the right way. Tonight made me remember why I love this team and put so much emotion into following them. Classy event all around, and the only fitting way to send out the old Stadium. I haven’t cried in years and I teared up more than once tonight.
#1 moment for me was 95 against mariners. Mattingly’s hr was amazing the place shook like crazy. and then standing in the cold rain when leyritz went deep to win it in the 17th. Amazing game
Gardner is the man
Watching a guy with his pure speed is something I haven’t seen as a Yankee fan since . . . . . . thinking . . . . . . . gotta be Ricky Henderson in the mid 80s. Gardner makes shit happen x2
Wow, thread number three. I don’t remember this many people around since The Trade
draft was big
True story
Draft day was pretty nuts.
By nuts you must mean annoying as shit.
Joes not taking Molina out and putting Pudge in, is he?
Nope, Pudge is the DH unless he double switches (which he may to keep Gardner in?)
Well if Jeter comes up next inning and hits a homer I’d say this game as pretty much been perfect
Agreed
I would have liked it to stay a 3 run deficit, get Mo the save opp.
that server upgrade was totally worth it.
Definitely. The site would have been crippled tonight without it.
The whole world wide web would have crippled.
who is pitching the 8th?
Joba
thanks -
I want Kay back in the booth
three threads.wow.
5 outs away from the last game in yankee stadium. Wow just wow.
Yeah, no kidding.
It’s just starting to feel real. very strange. We’ll never see them play in this shrine again, crazy.
quite the turnout tonite ladies and gents
Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey good bye.
I wonder if any fans will storm the field afterwords?
They will but they would shortly get shot with Bear tranquilizers.
and of course they won’t show it on TV, just like they don’t show streakers
It’s Mo time baby!
Joba rules.
Haha, fuck you Millar!
sorry, had to say it
We’re closing in on LoHud, about 50 comments away…
Time to spam. But dont tell Ben.
thats gotta be a first god i hate lohud

we need 101 comments on this thread (total) to break 1000
ARod meaningless 3-run HR in this inning.
Come on, 8th inning? Can’t be meaningless.
Molina on PED’s.
Poboy’s, Eclairs, and Donuts?
Next inning, GOD will close the doors of Yankee Stadium.
fitting
They better fucking show him running in. ESPN messed up with Andy, don’t do it twice.
Jose Molina wins the final Chevy Player of the Game Award at Yankee Stadium.
Just some more out and it is over.
*outs
Seriously…. Molina having the last HR has to be the most improbable thing ever.
Man, one more out and the Yankees will never bat in the Stadium again.
Good, they’re staying with Rivera’s entrance.
Boomer drinking a beer…whats new?…haha
Only one? Figured him for a double fister
I so want him to hit one out here
Well, someone had to make the last out for the Yanks. Glad it was Jeter.
Good, they’re staying
Finally, something ESPN didn’t fuck up.
That kid Fahey is having a tough night at SS. Wow. Even his teammates are looking at him like “WTF are you doing?”
ugh, still love ya Cap’n, but last Yankee out at the house? c’mon
Look at the list of the Most Outs Made in major league history… it’s full of the greatest names to have ever played the game.
You can’t make a lot of outs unless you’re good.
Oh, they showed it Mike, and it was awesome
Chills.
Is there a scene better than that?
Mo! What a fucking BADASS!!!
Ok now it’s starting to hit me. Last 3 outs…
Anybody starting to tear up?
Nah but im feeling quite ill right now.
Yes.
I have never been more saddened by the loss of an inanimate object in my life.
true dat
What about the inanimate carbon rod that went into outer space with Homer?
Agreed.
MO time.
Wow, they changed home plate already
I just hope that none of these guys hits one out. Wouldn’t want an opponent to be the last
Odds. 1,000,000 to 1, but then again so were Molina’s odds to be the last.
Damn, I thought the game was tomorrow night.
i laughed at that too.
Did they do anything special for the game?
Nope. Not really. Michael Kay was in the booth, that’s about all I remember.
You gotta feel for Posada, he would love to caught Mo right in this situation.
are they chanting Melky?
Sounds like they’re doing the roll call again
He came in for defense.
thats what I heard
Boo-urns. Boo-urns.
I was chanting boo-urns…….
Conga conga con-ga! Conga like you mean-it! Please don’t make me shock you!
No one will ever read this since im about 6 hours late…but gotta complete the Simpsons representation
Last inning.. wow
This is so sad. I’m going to miss the hell out of that place.
but the new place is gonna be off the hook! have you seen pictures of that jumbotron?
Every seat is a massage chair. And the bathrooms have porcelain bidets.
Hope Mo K’s the side.
Last out has to be a broken bat grounder, right?
Or an infield pop-up
IF pop to foul territory on the 3B side, 1996 style? I’ll take it.
And then I hope whoever catches it tosses it into the crowd
Then gets summarily executed by the security.
Hopefully it’s Melky in that scenario.
either that or a K looking on the corner.
You this is it guys, I know that everyone knows that but this is truly it. I mean no more games. I love that fucking stadium.
I feel so depressed right now knowing I’ll never be back there
2 outs to go
mo is prob mad nervous to close the last game ever… wait no, machines feel no emotion
wait no,
machinesomnipotent dieties feel no emotionFixed.
Imagine Mariano 10 years from now in the minor league system teaching kids his absolutely nasty cutter.
Remember to switch over the YES, they’ll have all the postgame stuff.
Girardi is such a stud taking Jeter out there
Classy move, taking Jeter out mid-inning.
Joe Morgan is thinking, “He couldn’t finish the game? What a pussy. I’m WAY better than he is.”
Uh, Morgan WAS better.
Last out has to be a K, has to
getting the ovation
At the same time, I have a smile on my face cuz this is really fucking sweet. Off into the sunset.
Word. This is so surreal.
1000!
I was just gonna say.
The crowd chants Derek Jeter and ESPN pans to A-Rod, I love it
put it in the books!
It’s a official. A kiss good-Bye.
Frankie Sinatra one more time for the old place
wow. just wow!! check out all those camera flashes! damn, i’m glad they won this last game at the stadium. i’da been pissed if they lost.
And they played a solid game too, that’s the best part for me. Just professional baseball
dass all she wrote
Man look at all the cops on the field!
So I see they brought an extra cop or two in for the postgame.
Or the whole damn National Guard! DAMN.
just a few. caution, ya know?
Cody Ransom on the 3-unassisted. Go figure.
It’s been a sweet 85 years, guys.
Yankees avoid elimination again.
Handsome Cody Ransom just went from utterly forgettable to eminently memorable.
I hope ESPN shows the post game ceremony.
YES will, not sure about the 4-letter.
They’ll almost definitely go to Sportscenter to show football highlights
Yup, because the most important sports story today is how J.T. O’Sullivan fared in the battle of Mike Martz vs. the Detroit Lions.
I dont get post game shows in MA, which SUCKS.
if they have it on MLB.tv then I can get it, otherwise I donn’t get YES
Don Larsen has started a crime ring!!
Dandy Andy with the win, Mo with the last 3 outs, Molina with the last HR… wait, one of those don’t fit in there
Holy shit, it’s Wade Boggs on a horse! How did he get in here?
Jose Molina with the last homer. Jose Molina folks.
Someone just got knocked the fuck out in RF.
Ben?
lol, he’d have one hell of a story to post when he got outta jail
There goes one asshole on the field.
Hahaha, ten cops tackled a guy in center field. And Rivera stands at home and laughs about it
I just heard those horse tranqs
Oh boy, what’s going on.
Wow, Jeter’s giving the speech to close it out, how appropriate
I’m just hoping that Jeter’s not going to say he has ALS…
Today … I consider myself … the luckiest motherfucker on the face of the Earth. I mean seriously, did you see how much they pay me, or the kind of ass I get?
Dude, I don’t call back hoes that you DREAM ABOUT. I mean, seriously… fucking AWESOME!
And I got an awful lot to live for fuck you A-Rod.
dodged a bullet there
I have to do 2 research assignments in 2 different classes. And both are on ALS. Am I a genius or what.
Derek Jeter 4 prez in 2012
I’d vote for him
me 2, over the idiots they have running now
I hope you’re joking.
Pride, Tradition, and… Poontang.
…….. waterworks.
tearing a little, mainly feel sick to my stomach
Dont salute us jeter, we didnt win 4 championships.
Wow that’s cool, what the yankee players are doing.
Class defined
What are they doing?
Taking a lap around the field.
Oh, Thanks.
That is cool.
This is so cool
That’s a nice sentiment. “We’re relying on you to bring the memories.”
They couldn’t have dragged Liza Minnelli off of her Prozac i.v. drip for tonight?
Does anyone really give a shit that they’re going to miss the playoffs right now?
Yes.
Sorry.
Not until tomorrow, tonight is just too good
exactly
for this night, fuck no.
i feel like they just won the world series
Amen.
Someone get a bus so the ghosts can get in and head on over to TNYS
well since im sitting in my apartment with no YES and no ESPN i look forward to puchasing this whole broadcast for 100 bucks when the yanks put it on dvd
Im not sad. The next stadium is going to be Kick ass especially with CC starting the first game.
I’d start CC the second game after Wang
CHIEN MING SUCK IS NOT TEH ACE, HES JUST EFFECTIVE!!1!11
Well he’s obviously better than Clemens seeing how he was on the montage of great pitchers and Clemens wasn’t
I’ll bet dollars to donuts it’s Andy Pettitte starting the first game next year, CC’s acquisition notwithstanding.
I could definitely see that
lets also keep in mind the new stadium is gonna be totally fucking badass
Sounded like he said “The fans here never seem to amaze me”
I think he did. Can’t wait for the Sawx trolls on that one.
Gammons?
No, Jeter
I will admit, this moment makes me more excited for the new stadium.
How would you like to be the asshole telling players where to go to interviews right now when they’re just enjoying themselves
“The way the Yankee organization is, they’re always gonna try to put their best players on the field.”
What?! Really? Is that how baseball teams work, Joe?
Unbelievable.
And here I thought they were going to trot Billy Crystal out there 4 times a week next season
Hahahahahahaah….Joe Morgan said this a few minuts ago:
“….I am just like Derek Jeter…”
I don’t remember much of what he said before and after – but that just made me laugh out loud.
Well guys, its been a crazy night, 10 more comments to 1100 but I’m done. Talk to ya’ll tomorrow
And I’m sure Mike will be excited that right now (at the end of the broadcast), we’re ahead of LoHud in comments. Great night guys!
It’s nice. Great night by all.
a nice bronx beatdown the last 4 games in fenway would be sweet
i thought it was 3 games?
shit ur right, dont know why i thought it was 4, oh well a 3 day “now yous can’t leave” bronx beatdown would be sweet
Looking at the NL west standings makes me think we are a playoff team.
These are moments that make me a proud and happy being a yankee fan.
amen
seriously. the RS can win as many games as they want, but they’ll always be looking up at the greatest team in the history of sports.
That Geico motorcycle insurance commercial with The Sounds slays me.
Yup. Great game from start to finish. ESPN was only mildly annoying a few times, and I’ll forget about that quickly.
Good night all – Thanks RAB.
What did Jeter say? It’s about the fans.
Thank you.
Word.
did anyone else see the little boy tearing up on ESPN? That pretty much symbolized every Yankee fan in America right now.
First story on ESPN: The Patriots.
Fuck you, Bristol. Fuck you.
Well, they covered the Yanks all day. They were probably ready to explode.
And the front page of ESPN.com? The Cowboys-Packers game. Seriously.
FUCK YOU, BRISTOL.
i know.. they are gay. we only got a little box on the screen they had fuckin ronnie brown up all day
Can you imagine if this was Fenway last game? Y-I-K-E-S. YIKES.
Okay… so, now Cleveland beats Boston on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and we sweep Toronto… and we go into Fenway for a three game set down three!
LET’S DO THIS SHIT!!!!
i wish.
Hey, like the old guy said “Ain’t over till it’s over!”
There’s a Yankee Stadium urinal cake on eBay already.
Kidding though. Could you imagine?
Ah, phew.
Please tell me you’re joking?
I’m not sure if this is old news, but I was just reading a game recap and came across a quote of Bernie Williams’ that I think might be the most eloquent summary of the “it’s about the fans” theme we’ve all been talking about:

As far as I’m concerned, you can’t say it more perfectly than that. One of the many reasons we’ve loved you all these years, Bernie.
Amen. And that’s why the new Stadium is going to be just as awesome as this one, and why we’ll win 26 more titles in that one.
Tremendously said by Bernie..
Well, 26 World Championships in 85 years. I sure hope they do better in the next 85 the new stadium
im happy to be part of history
i wasnt here all night but thats amazing that you guys went to the 3rd thread
im in awe of everything
This is something we’ll have for the rest of our lives. In 50 years we can all tell our grandkids about Yankee Stadium. I’m sad to see it go, but I’m happy because the celebration was so wonderful.
Yup. Well said.
Night, all.
“Showering love on you?” C’mon Kay.
I guess all there is to say is that I’m gonna miss that place.
Haha, well done Singy. You’ll always be 51 around here.
Honestly, the only thing missing was Joe Torre and Don Mattingly. But they are busy getting ready for the playoffs.
Sorry couldnt let that one go, but honestly not having Torre and Donnie Baseball there sucked a bit.
Murcer and Scooter too. I could have used a Holy Cow! tonight.
It’s great watchin the guys taking Yankee Stadium dirt.
Giambi last hit, Joba last K, Gardner last run.
Whoever won that thing from the beginning of the year, with the “first single, first K, first etc…..”
Not sure, that’s Ben’s thing.
To everything turn turn turn
Oh man, tomorrow’s rookie hazing day!!!
Hell yeah. I wonder what the theme will be?
can’t wait.
How are they gonna fit Humberto into a costume? (joking, but only a little)
hey mike i was wondering what was the previous high for posts?
Not sure exactly, but it was 700-something. We shattered it tonight.
damn, crazy stuff man. good for you guys as usual phenomenal work with the site and all, i get to look forward to my office block being on lockdown for the next few days bc of the bush visit to ny
They really did it right tonite. Something we should all be proud of and happy with. This night was well done, and typifies what our organization is capable of when we do things the right way. I haven’t cried in years and I teared up more than once tonight.
Hard not to get a little choked up tonight, no lie. Well put.
mitch hedberg is in this episode of that 70s show, COULD THIS NIGHT GET ANY BETTER???????
ok goodbye
have your heard his “new” album.
so funny. i miss that guy
I never cried as happy, sad, depressedful, and grateful as i did tonight. Thank you Yankee Stadium. I truly love you. Goodnight.
Great, great night. How fitting for Mo to finish what Pettite started.
I did think that speech sounded a little toolish though.
Mell Hall wasnt available to attend? Guess he couldnt post bail
#1 moment for me was 95 against mariners. Mattingly’s hr was amazing the place shook like crazy. and then standing in the cold rain when leyritz went deep to win it in the 17th. Amazing game
its going to be a long winter
