Game 162: It feels like Spring Training

By

So here we are folks, the last time we’ll get to see our beloved Bombers play until Spring Training starts in March. We’ll be around all winter of course, but baseball blogging just doesn’t have to same feel to it during the offseason. I’d much rather sit and bitch about pitching changes than trying to guess the next big signing, but eh, what can you do now.

Enjoy the last game.

1. Gardner, CF
2. Cano, 2B
3. Giambi, DH
4. Nady, LF
5. Pudge, C
6. Betemit, 3B
7. Ransom, SS
8. Melky, RF
9. Miranda, 1B

And on the mound in what I hope is that last time I ever see him in a Yankee uniform, Sidney Ponson.

Notes: If you didn’t listen to Moose’s postgame press conference, it certainly sounded like he was ready to hang’em up. What a career, we’re all lucky to have witnessed it.

Phil Hughes warming up. This game became worth watching instantly!

  2. Jamal G. says:

Tim Lincecum K’ed 13 in his start today. N.L. Cy Young.

  3. Marty Puccio says:

Moose won’t retire. Somebody will offer him 33M/3 Years and he’ll take it…. Storing those Corvettes ain’t cheap.

  4. Bill N says:

Is the game being televised ? Its not on espn or the baseball package

  5. Joey H. says:

I dont think moose will leave. if he does, what a way to go out.

  6. Bill N says:

Thanks Mike. Only problem is I live in Philly guess I’m shit outta luck

  7. Joey H. says:

This offseason for both NY teams is going to be one to follow. Make sure you keep ur threads up to date there mike ;)

  8. Joey H. says:

They couldnt find a more worthy starter than sidney today?

  9. Mike Pop says:

sid the kid gets a rotation spot in the beginning of the year for another team next year ?

  10. Mike Pop says:

jesus that pitch was so slow lol i got up went to the bathroom came back and giambi finished swinging.

  11. Mike Pop says:

Whats up with Sexson he just chillin on the couch watching football these days ?

  12. UWS says:

I do not enjoy watching Sir Sidney pitch and hope he gets lit up. Does that make me a bad Yankee fan?

    • Mike A. says:

No worse than the people who boo A-Rod.

    • Steve H says:

This is a bad Yankee fan. From lohud (I only went there because of the link at the top, btw)

“the thought of mussina winning 20 makes me sick

hes blown so many big games for the yankees

      look at his postseason record

look at the bad seasons hes had making tons of money when we needed him to be our number 1

then we have a bad year and he does great

mussina go back home and never comeback you stole 100 million from the yankees”

  13. Joey H. says:

Hey, Yankees are at 89 wins. Bidding for 90. In some cases like in the NL, 90 wins wins you the wild card. and in all likely hood, if the rays sucked, we would be in the postseason. What im getting at is where do you think the 2009 rays will be? will they be as good?

  14. UWS says:

I know this game doesn’t mean jack shit, but they could at least pretend to try a little.

  15. Mike Pop says:

    Damnit Gardner hit the gym

  16. Mike Pop says:

Hopegully Cano can carry his hot streak into next season

  17. Ivan says:

I do think that looking at this yankee team, people gotta understand that this team is far from a bad team. They are probably gonna win 90 games in the toughes division and in the tougher league. So don’t assume major changes are needed here.

  18. Mike A. says:

I am enjoying the Yanks beating around the Sox top relievers on this last day of the season.

  19. UWS says:

How funny will it be if they have to play extra innings tonight?

  20. Joey H. says:

What the fuck pudge. can you TRY to run a little?

  21. Patrick T says:

    I never liked Pudge.

  22. Ivan says:

Man Pudge sucks. Can’t wait to see Posada playing again.

  23. Joey H. says:

And why is sidney going out there for 6?

  24. Joey H. says:

Wow. It just hit me that this is the last game that ill probably watch untill april.

    • Mike Pop says:

      sucks dont it

    • Mike A. says:

      Not gonna watch the playoffs?

      • Joey H. says:

EH. what really is there to watch for. Put it this way, I’ll watch FOR them but not watch the game them selves. There are plenty of things i want to look out for, 1 being the rays performance under real pressure, 2 being the redsox kinda beat up. otherwise the NL is a lock with the cubs isnt it? actually thats a good point i wanna see the cubs and dodgers. so yea maybe that and thats it. but i cant pain myself to listen to buck and mccarver.

  25. Mike A. says:

Whenever I see Alex Cora, the first thing I think of is him crying on the grass in 1996.

  26. Ivan says:

I wonder if we see Humberto Sanchez.

  27. Ivan says:

    Family Guy Time.

  28. Joey H. says:

    Fuckin dick.

  29. Ivan says:

ah man, gotta love Family Guy.

  30. Joey H. says:

thats the third time melky faked throwing the ball into the stands. the kid is funny,

  31. Jamal G. says:

Heh, I love how Melky continually dekes the Fenway crowd into thinking that he is going to give them a ball.

  32. UWS says:

Gardner making a case for himself for next year…

Although, does getting hits off Timlin really count anymore?

  33. Ivan says:

“I ain’t no Meteorologist, but it’s raining bitches”

    LOL.

  34. UWS says:

    Gardner should just steal home.

  35. Joey H. says:

Warren Morris has a very tino-like swing.

  36. Ivan says:

    What a Show.

  37. Ivan says:

    Come on Cervelli.

  38. Ivan says:

    oh well tough A-Bat.

  39. Ivan says:

Moose is one of those rare pitchers who likes the AL more than the NL.

  40. Ivan says:

Moose is better than Kaat, Blyleven, Tommy John and Morris to me.

  41. Ivan says:

Another bad signing by Cashman in concern with Moose.

  42. UWS says:

This game just ground to a crashing halt the last couple of innings.

  43. Jamal G. says:

You have to think that cop is thinking: “Shut…the…fuck…up…”

  44. Ivan says:

Geez Rasner challege the guys. It’s not like your facing Ortiz, Youkilis or Drew.

  45. UWS says:

Dang, screw you Casey. I was hoping for extra innings.

  46. Ivan says:

    Rasner sucks.

  47. Pedro says:

I don’t get the point of having Ponson and Rasner showing their mediocrity one last time before the season ends. Why not give somebody else the chance?

  48. BigYank1 says:

I hope we NEVER have to see Raner or Ponson ever again!!!

  49. Mike A. says:

Last inning of the Yanks’ season. Give ‘em hell boys.

  50. BigYank1 says:

    ^Rasner

  51. UWS says:

I have a strange and inexplicable desire to pat Brett Gardner on the head.

  52. UWS says:

Yeah, Melk-man doesn’t want to go gently!

  53. Joey H. says:

    the sox killer.. brett gardner..

  54. UWS says:

    C’mon Gardner! I don’t want the season to end…

  55. Ivan says:

Yankees are not gonna go out like bitches.

  56. Mike A. says:

Check out Brett Gardner givin’ the ump lip.

  57. Ivan says:

Wow that was a lets get outta here and an rookie strike 3.

  58. Mike A. says:

    Whaddya know, Robbie Cano.

  59. UWS says:

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

  60. Ivan says:

    Cano where were ya man.

  61. Jamal G. says:

    Clutch.

    Quiet down, Fenway.

  62. Ivan says:

    Hit a Homer Giambi.

  63. Jamal G. says:

They should have cut him in April, like I said. ;)

  64. Ivan says:

Scranton and Pawtuckett are giving us a good game.

  65. Pedro says:

Are our relievers not allowed to throw strikes tonight?

  66. Jamal G. says:

How ’bout Ryan Braun? A walk-off grand slam and a go-ahead two-run shot in the final week of the season. Yowzers!

  67. Ivan says:

Wait til people see Mark Melancon pitch next season.

  68. Ivan says:

Come on D-Rob throw some strikes ya better than that.

  69. Jamal G. says:

Fucking Buckhalter just hurt himself making a tackle on an INT return. Ugh, I might need him.

  70. UWS says:

    Extra innings, baby!!!!!

  71. UWS says:

So who will y’all be rooting for in the playoffs (if at all)?

My choices: Cubs, Rays, Brewers, not necessarily in that order.

  72. Bryan says:

can anyone tell me why moeller is playing 3B? lol

  73. Mike A. says:

20 innings baby, here we go.

  74. Ivan says:

Detroit finishing last in their division yikes.

  75. Joey H. says:

I think if melky didnt dive he woulda had that ball

  76. Pedro says:

    That dive… sad.

  77. UWS says:

You know, this has been a pretty good game. Would’ve been much more exciting if it had more meaning, but still a good way to finish out the season.

  78. Ivan says:

Wow 97 MPH on the Black.

  79. Samsonov KGB says:

anyone see the guy in the yankee jacket? lol making wierd hand signals

  80. Jamal G. says:

The Yankee fan behind home plate is quite obnoxious.

  81. Mike A. says:

Celebrate that win Red Sox, you earned it.

  82. Ivan says:

Figures the yanks end the season this way.

  83. UWS says:

    Drat. THAAAAAAAAAT’S all folks.

    It’s been real.

  84. Jamal G. says:

Celebrate all you want, let’s see how you do when your postseason rotation in Games 2 and 3 read: Dice-K and Tim Wakefield.

    • BigBlueAL says:

Well, it is better than the Yankees post-season rotation since at least the Red Sox have one….

      • UWS says:

You just had to squeeze that in, didn’t you.

        • BigBlueAL says:

LMFAO. Sorry, just that I hate the Red Sox as much as anyone, but when Yankee fans say stuff like that, it makes them look like stupid Red Sox fans used to before they started winning WS titles. Making fun of a team’s chances in the playoffs when your team is not only not in the playoffs but finished 6 games behind the team you are making fun of, its pretty pathetic.

I guarantee you if the roles were reversed and a Red Sox fan talked crap about the Yankees’ chances in the playoffs if they werent even in it themselves, everyone here would kill that person to no end.

TRUST me though, I hope the fuckin Red Sox get swept by the Angels!!!!!

          • UWS says:

Look at it this way: when the Yankees make the playoffs and get bounced in the first round, they’re a failure, even though they actually made it to the postseason. If the Sox do the same thing, they’re also a failure. Thus by that logic, the extra 3-4 games they get to play are irrelevant.

NOTE: I do not believe that the season is a failure if you merely make the playoffs but don’t win a championship. I think this season has proved just how hard it is to “just make it” and that should never ever be taken lightly. We should always appreciate every success our team has because we are entitled to nothing.

            /ramble

  85. Samsonov KGB says:

*sigh* well there goes another season. lets pray for good things to come in ’09

    • Joey H. says:

Yeah where is that asshole who always says 27/08. someone needs to update him.

      • Old Ranger says:

Just because you are uneducated and can’t write well enough to explain yourself don’t call someone you never met a bad name. It might hurt very much if we ever met in person…in words you may understand…don’t fuck with me, personally!
I always read this blog, just make a respectful (civil) comment and everyone might respect what you have to say.

  86. Bryan says:

Well doesn’t that just cap off the season for ya, a walk off single. ughhh, whens spring training?

  87. pat says:

damn i really wanted to string that one out for a few more innings

  88. Jamal G. says:

One reason I’m glad the season is over: No more Mohegan Sun commercials.

  89. Joey H. says:

O well, yankees loose, but ellsbury is still a buttpirate.

  90. Pedro says:

Too bad we couldn’t win 90 and finish the season in a good way. But then again it’s hard to win a game when you have Ponson, Rasner and Veras pitching.

  91. Mike A. says:

Tigers-ChiSox tomorrow, off day, then Game 1 of the ALDS I believe. NLDS starts Thursday.

  92. Ivan says:

This is it, it’s over. Well see the yankee next time in March.

  93. dkidd says:

my (not free agent) wish list for 2009:

    a healthy wang/hughes/joba/mariano
    a rejuvenated cano

  94. pat says:

Well the mets missed the playoffs and beckett is done for the season.. all is not lost

  95. dkidd says:

    beckett is done?

    • BigBlueAL says:

Cant pitch in Game 1 or 2, questionable for Game 3 and rest of series. Injured his oblique throwing in the bullpen on Friday apparently.

  96. dkidd says:

    playoff predictions?

    i’ll go with rays/dodgers
