Game 162: It feels like Spring Training
BySo here we are folks, the last time we’ll get to see our beloved Bombers play until Spring Training starts in March. We’ll be around all winter of course, but baseball blogging just doesn’t have to same feel to it during the offseason. I’d much rather sit and bitch about pitching changes than trying to guess the next big signing, but eh, what can you do now.
Enjoy the last game.
1. Gardner, CF
2. Cano, 2B
3. Giambi, DH
4. Nady, LF
5. Pudge, C
6. Betemit, 3B
7. Ransom, SS
8. Melky, RF
9. Miranda, 1B
And on the mound in what I hope is that last time I ever see him in a Yankee uniform, Sidney Ponson.
Notes: If you didn’t listen to Moose’s postgame press conference, it certainly sounded like he was ready to hang’em up. What a career, we’re all lucky to have witnessed it.

Phil Hughes warming up. This game became worth watching instantly!
Perhaps later in the game. Would be awesome to vulture *him* a win.
Just getting work. I’m sure if Ponson couldn’t go, they’d go to Rasner before Hughes on short rest.
I wouldn’t cry if I saw him pitch an inning or two tonight.
Tim Lincecum K’ed 13 in his start today. N.L. Cy Young.
Moose won’t retire. Somebody will offer him 33M/3 Years and he’ll take it…. Storing those Corvettes ain’t cheap.
Mike Mussina has grossed about $140 million in his career. I doubt he’s too concerned about money anymore.
His only concern is figuring out how to spend it.
I just hope he didn’t have it invested with Lehman.
Is the game being televised ? Its not on espn or the baseball package
YES has it.
I dont think moose will leave. if he does, what a way to go out.
Thanks Mike. Only problem is I live in Philly guess I’m shit outta luck
This offseason for both NY teams is going to be one to follow. Make sure you keep ur threads up to date there mike
They couldnt find a more worthy starter than sidney today?
sid the kid gets a rotation spot in the beginning of the year for another team next year ?
Nats’ Opening Day starter baby.
ya him or mark hendrickson lol
jesus that pitch was so slow lol i got up went to the bathroom came back and giambi finished swinging.
Whats up with Sexson he just chillin on the couch watching football these days ?
and we almost went months without that fucks name being mentioned. thanks for letting the cat out of the bag.
I do not enjoy watching Sir Sidney pitch and hope he gets lit up. Does that make me a bad Yankee fan?
No worse than the people who boo A-Rod.
Whew. That sure makes me feel better!
This is a bad Yankee fan. From lohud (I only went there because of the link at the top, btw)
“the thought of mussina winning 20 makes me sick
hes blown so many big games for the yankees
look at his postseason record
look at the bad seasons hes had making tons of money when we needed him to be our number 1
then we have a bad year and he does great
mussina go back home and never comeback you stole 100 million from the yankees”
High-quality, intelligent discourse right there. I wish I could meet this person, so that we could hold a rational well-reasoned conversation about baseball and the Yankees.
Yeah thats like hearing, Happy birthday Mike, and oh yea… your mother died.
Hey, Yankees are at 89 wins. Bidding for 90. In some cases like in the NL, 90 wins wins you the wild card. and in all likely hood, if the rays sucked, we would be in the postseason. What im getting at is where do you think the 2009 rays will be? will they be as good?
I bet they’ll be even better. Who’s having a career year on that team? No one. Heck, if anything guys like Upton, Iwamura and Crawford have underperformed.
A large part of their success this year was their pitching, wasn’t it? Do you expect all of their starters to remain healthy and good again?
ya but waht bout their pitching they could have been overachieving
But that pitching isnt really all that intimidating. and their bullpen guys are really unproven past this season. the more word gets around the element of surprise disappears. On the SP, kazmir isnt even good for 6 innings 80% of the time. then the rest of these guys they trot out there dont scare me. I dont know.
Matt Garza doesn’t scare you? Jamie Shields and the best changeup in the game doesn’t scare you? David Price doesn’t scare you?
They sure scare the shit out of me.
Matt garza isnt unhittable. His whip isnt outstanding. lets not fool our selves. James shields is relatively NEW. So he falls into the element of surprise general thing. And david price. well the guy hasnt thrown 15 innings in the majors yet so i wont say a word about him aside from we dont know what will be made of him.
Well James Shields had a good season last season and obviously pitch very well this season.
But still very young and in experienced. alot will be told of them when we see how they perform in the playoffs. but im sorry, their staff in a short series doesnt really intimidate me if im a manager
Garza’s WHIP is 17th best in the league, only 0.05 away from top 10, or 1 baserunner every 20 innings.
But in a short series, does that staff scare you? the answer should be no. they are a solid staff but not dominating.
I don’t wanna be annoying, but that’s clearly a typo. What’s the REAL number?
Garza’s WHIP = 1.24
http://tinyurl.com/3msuh5
And James Shields WHIP is better.
And Kazmir’s not far behind him.
Scary to see some of the names above Burnett on that list. Let’s not give him 5/75, please.
Now him, doc and the others who follow are very scary in a short series
I know this game doesn’t mean jack shit, but they could at least pretend to try a little.
Damnit Gardner hit the gym
Hopegully Cano can carry his hot streak into next season
Me too. Hopefully he goes and plays two or three months worth of winter ball back home in the DR.
I do think that looking at this yankee team, people gotta understand that this team is far from a bad team. They are probably gonna win 90 games in the toughes division and in the tougher league. So don’t assume major changes are needed here.
Better record than the Mets if they win today.
The same Met team with Johan and The yanks not getting any wins from Hughes and Kennedy.
ya idk but the thing is if u make major changes u might be able to reach the 100 105 wins club
I am enjoying the Yanks beating around the Sox top relievers on this last day of the season.
How funny will it be if they have to play extra innings tonight?
What the fuck pudge. can you TRY to run a little?
I don’t know the numbers, but it sure feels like Pudge has been worse than Molina offensively. When you are worse than Molina offensively, you might as well retire.
he has been worse than Molina statistically.
I never liked Pudge.
Man Pudge sucks. Can’t wait to see Posada playing again.
And why is sidney going out there for 6?
Wow. It just hit me that this is the last game that ill probably watch untill april.
sucks dont it
Not gonna watch the playoffs?
EH. what really is there to watch for. Put it this way, I’ll watch FOR them but not watch the game them selves. There are plenty of things i want to look out for, 1 being the rays performance under real pressure, 2 being the redsox kinda beat up. otherwise the NL is a lock with the cubs isnt it? actually thats a good point i wanna see the cubs and dodgers. so yea maybe that and thats it. but i cant pain myself to listen to buck and mccarver.
Whenever I see Alex Cora, the first thing I think of is him crying on the grass in 1996.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FM8zZ3A11LI
what a bitch
I wonder if we see Humberto Sanchez.
Family Guy Time.
Fuckin dick.
I love how sanguine Kay was in his call.
Yea im too lazy, i was gnna say that. ive done alot of typing on this rainy day in NY
What happened?
Betemit fielded an easy grounder and airmailed it over Miranda’s head and into the Sox’ dugout.
make sure you add. by twwenty fivee feeet
betemit had the runner our by 25 feet. and threw the ball into the soxs dugout.
ah man, gotta love Family Guy.
The show can be cruel at time.
Boom goes the dynamite. There it is.
lol. Family Guy’s the shit.
I’m no meteorologist, but it looks like it’s rainin’ bitches.
thats the third time melky faked throwing the ball into the stands. the kid is funny,
Heh, I love how Melky continually dekes the Fenway crowd into thinking that he is going to give them a ball.
^^
Gardner making a case for himself for next year…
Although, does getting hits off Timlin really count anymore?
yea toward your batting average, not your ego.
“I ain’t no Meteorologist, but it’s raining bitches”
LOL.
Gardner should just steal home.
Warren Morris has a very tino-like swing.
What a Show.
Come on Cervelli.
Not this time. Put up a pretty good fight, though.
oh well tough A-Bat.
Moose is one of those rare pitchers who likes the AL more than the NL.
Moose is better than Kaat, Blyleven, Tommy John and Morris to me.
Another bad signing by Cashman in concern with Moose.
?????
I was being sarcastic.
Ah. I figured, but I wasn’t sure
This game just ground to a crashing halt the last couple of innings.
You have to think that cop is thinking: “Shut…the…fuck…up…”
Geez Rasner challege the guys. It’s not like your facing Ortiz, Youkilis or Drew.
Dang, screw you Casey. I was hoping for extra innings.
Rasner sucks.
Yes. Yes he does.
I mean for a guy who prides him self on his control to walk 3 straight guys is beside me. o well 1 more half inning and the nightmare is over.
I don’t get the point of having Ponson and Rasner showing their mediocrity one last time before the season ends. Why not give somebody else the chance?
I hope we NEVER have to see Raner or Ponson ever again!!!
Last inning of the Yanks’ season. Give ‘em hell boys.
Raise Cain!
^Rasner
I have a strange and inexplicable desire to pat Brett Gardner on the head.
Yeah, Melk-man doesn’t want to go gently!
where was that bunting ability all season?
SENNNDDD MEEE DOWN TO THE MINORRRS YOU FUCKSSSSSSSSSSSS.( in not such great english lol)
Those Damn Yankees!
the sox killer.. brett gardner..
C’mon Gardner! I don’t want the season to end…
Yankees are not gonna go out like bitches.
One NY team already did that today.
well if anyone in the starting lineup should be in this situation it shud be cano.
HENCE my point….
Check out Brett Gardner givin’ the ump lip.
Wow that was a lets get outta here and an rookie strike 3.
Whaddya know, Robbie Cano.
You mean, Robbie cano, dontcha know. right? or a ribbie for robbie
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Cano where were ya man.
Clutch.
Quiet down, Fenway.
Hit a Homer Giambi.
…or ground out in a lame way.
Thats impossible, there was a runner in scoring position.
They should have cut him in April, like I said.
Scranton and Pawtuckett are giving us a good game.
I don’t want it to end cuz I’ll be miserable for the following 6 months.
Are our relievers not allowed to throw strikes tonight?
Goal: walk in the winning run to end the season.
How ’bout Ryan Braun? A walk-off grand slam and a go-ahead two-run shot in the final week of the season. Yowzers!
Not a bad way to go into the postseason.
Wait til people see Mark Melancon pitch next season.
Come on D-Rob throw some strikes ya better than that.
Fucking Buckhalter just hurt himself making a tackle on an INT return. Ugh, I might need him.
Talk about a guy who can’t stay healthy.
Carl who?
Extra innings, baby!!!!!
So who will y’all be rooting for in the playoffs (if at all)?
My choices: Cubs, Rays, Brewers, not necessarily in that order.
can anyone tell me why moeller is playing 3B? lol
20 innings baby, here we go.
I think your gonna be dissapointed.
Nah, Veras will fuck it up.
Detroit finishing last in their division yikes.
Best offense in history says Steve Phillips.
I think if melky didnt dive he woulda had that ball
Doubtful.
Its over dramatics. he woulda had it.
It looked like he could have had that ball without the dive.
That dive… sad.
Ha ha.
http://www.bostonherald.com/bl.....ostseason/
I called it. didnt i. idk if it was this thread or the last but i called it.
Ouch. I would feel bad for the Red Sox if they weren’t, you know, Red Sox.
It’s becoming a good night uh.
Heh, epic fa…err…Mets fail.
You know, this has been a pretty good game. Would’ve been much more exciting if it had more meaning, but still a good way to finish out the season.
Wow 97 MPH on the Black.
anyone see the guy in the yankee jacket? lol making wierd hand signals
The Yankee fan behind home plate is quite obnoxious.
Celebrate that win Red Sox, you earned it.
Toldja Veras would fuck it up.
Figures the yanks end the season this way.
Drat. THAAAAAAAAAT’S all folks.
It’s been real.
Celebrate all you want, let’s see how you do when your postseason rotation in Games 2 and 3 read: Dice-K and Tim Wakefield.
Well, it is better than the Yankees post-season rotation since at least the Red Sox have one….
You just had to squeeze that in, didn’t you.
LMFAO. Sorry, just that I hate the Red Sox as much as anyone, but when Yankee fans say stuff like that, it makes them look like stupid Red Sox fans used to before they started winning WS titles. Making fun of a team’s chances in the playoffs when your team is not only not in the playoffs but finished 6 games behind the team you are making fun of, its pretty pathetic.
I guarantee you if the roles were reversed and a Red Sox fan talked crap about the Yankees’ chances in the playoffs if they werent even in it themselves, everyone here would kill that person to no end.
TRUST me though, I hope the fuckin Red Sox get swept by the Angels!!!!!
Look at it this way: when the Yankees make the playoffs and get bounced in the first round, they’re a failure, even though they actually made it to the postseason. If the Sox do the same thing, they’re also a failure. Thus by that logic, the extra 3-4 games they get to play are irrelevant.
NOTE: I do not believe that the season is a failure if you merely make the playoffs but don’t win a championship. I think this season has proved just how hard it is to “just make it” and that should never ever be taken lightly. We should always appreciate every success our team has because we are entitled to nothing.
/ramble
*sigh* well there goes another season. lets pray for good things to come in ‘09
Yeah where is that asshole who always says 27/08. someone needs to update him.
Just because you are uneducated and can’t write well enough to explain yourself don’t call someone you never met a bad name. It might hurt very much if we ever met in person…in words you may understand…don’t fuck with me, personally!
I always read this blog, just make a respectful (civil) comment and everyone might respect what you have to say.
Well doesn’t that just cap off the season for ya, a walk off single. ughhh, whens spring training?
damn i really wanted to string that one out for a few more innings
One reason I’m glad the season is over: No more Mohegan Sun commercials.
O well, yankees loose, but ellsbury is still a buttpirate.
Too bad we couldn’t win 90 and finish the season in a good way. But then again it’s hard to win a game when you have Ponson, Rasner and Veras pitching.
Tigers-ChiSox tomorrow, off day, then Game 1 of the ALDS I believe. NLDS starts Thursday.
This is it, it’s over. Well see the yankee next time in March.
my (not free agent) wish list for 2009:
a healthy wang/hughes/joba/mariano
a rejuvenated cano
Well the mets missed the playoffs and beckett is done for the season.. all is not lost
beckett is done?
Cant pitch in Game 1 or 2, questionable for Game 3 and rest of series. Injured his oblique throwing in the bullpen on Friday apparently.
playoff predictions?
i’ll go with rays/dodgers
I’d like to see Rays/Cubs, but I fear it’ll be Angels/Dodgers.
I’m going Rays-Dodgers. Rays have that whole “team of destiny” thing going, and I just think the Dodgers can beat the Cubbies in a short series.
Rays Vs. Dodgers.
