Game Thread: AL Central Playoff

By

A full 162 game schedule couldn’t decide it, so tonight the Minny Twins and ChiTown Sox face off in a one-game playoff to decide the AL Central crown. The pitching matchup features a pair of young, 11 game winners: Bobby Abreu target Nick Blackburn and wouldn’t the Rangers like to have him back John Danks. Loser goes home, winner flies to Tampa and plays tomorrow Thursday.

TBS, despite inexplicably not having an HD channel, is carrying the game. First pitch is at 7:30 EDT; comment away here.

  1. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

I’m watching TBS HD right now. No reason to move to Florida though.

  2. TheLastClown says:

Winner flies to Tampa to play Thursday.

  3. Mike Pop says:

    tbs has hd

  4. TheLastClown says:

Yeah, I’ll have to say Im on TBS HD now as well.

  5. Jamal G. says:

Why the hell is Michael Cuddyer, he of the sub-.700 OPS, batting ahead of Delmon Young?

  6. TheLastClown says:

Who’ll win the NL Cy Young?

Will Webb get chosen over Lincecum?

    • Jamal G. says:

Tim Lincecum should, but voters are dumb like that with the Win “stat”.

    • Mike A. says:

Teh Johan. Rate stats are eerily similar:

      163 ERA+ vs 164 ERA+ for Timmy
      1.148 WHIP vs 1.172
      3.27 K/BB vs 3.15

Timmy’s got the K’s but look at the divisions. As I quote Keith Law:

Santana threw 59 innings against Philadelphia and Florida with a 2.58 ERA. Lincecum threw 43 1/3 innings against San Diego alone and had a 0.62 ERA; his ERA against everyone else was 3.09.

      Voila.

      • Jamal G. says:

You damn right Timmy has the K’s, his K/9 rate is almost three points higher.

Also, the Mets’ defense helped out a bit in Joahn’s numbers. Santana has a FIP of 3.51, 0.98-points higher than his 2.53-ERA. Lincecum, you ask? His defense didn’t help or hurt shit. He posted a 2.62-FIP, exactly the same as his ERA.

Lincecum also pitched seven less innings than Santana and gave up twelve less dingers.

        • TheLastClown says:

Yeah, that’s more along the lines of what I was thinking. Though I wouldn’t have backed it up :)

        • Ivan says:

Yea Johan has been somewhat lucky this season.

        • Mike A. says:

Lincecum picked up 93 K’s against the offensively inept Padres and Rockies alone, then there’s the swing happy D-Backs. The only sissy offense in the NL East is the Nats, and Johan only got 3 starts against them. Johan also get bonus points for absolutely dealing down the stretch (1.82 ERA after July 22th) for a team in a playoff race. The Giants were out of it in May.

          I don’t think Johan’s a clear winner, it’s very much a neck-and-neck race. I just prefer the lefty.

          • A.D. says:

but Timmy doesn’t make the schedule, can only punish him so much for that

          • Jamal G. says:

I get that the level of competition has to be taken into consideration, but that can’t be the main argument (and quite frankly, the only valid one) against a guy in a Cy Young race.

            • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi says:

You’ve been given some valid arguments though. You may not agree with them, but it’s inaccurate to call them invalid. I don’t think Mike’s saying the level of competition, pennant race, etc. stuff is the main argument.

              • Jamal G. says:

Oh, I agree that the race is neck-and-neck, don’t get me wrong. Johan Santana’s command kicks Lincecum’s ass (command is the most important thing in pitching, in my opinion), and that’s a big argument in favor of Santana. My only gripe is that people will uses the level of competition as their main argument against Lincecum, and I feel that is just too unfair for the award to come down to that.

                • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi says:

Agreed. The voters, even if/when they get the voting right, don’t get it right for the right reasons. I’m just cool with either of those guys winning the award, so I guess the reason why one wins just won’t bother me much this season.

                • Mike A. says:

command is the most important thing in pitching, in my opinion

No no no, the most important thing in pitching is velocity, specifically throwing harder than Phil Hughes.

                • Jamal G. says:

So we can agree, if Brandon Webb wins it, we both go on a killing spree?

                • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi says:

I’m sure I’ll just be telling people to stop caring so much about what a bunch of misinformed writers think (I’m a broken record with that stuff). You guys can kill away, though.

                • Mike A. says:

Agreed. Haren outpitched him in every way this year, except for wins and GB/FB ratio.

                • Jamal G. says:

I’m not going to regard that as a stat anymore, I am literally going to boycott that term all together.

        • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi says:

Jamal – Do you completely disregard the pennant race/pressure aspect? Not asking this question as an accusation, it’s an honest question.

          • Jamal G. says:

I’m not going to lie, I do disregard it more than most (probably to my detriment in the eyes of some). I try to base these comparisons of players in as many neutral scenarios as I can.

            • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi says:

No I totally hear you and I agree, I don’t like considering that stuff either. When it comes down to it though I don’t have a huge problem with people saying “well player A and player B had great seasons, I could go either way with this, but player B did it in a pennant race and player A was in a shitty division on a shitty team, so I’ll vote for player B.” Personally, my problem is with voters who use the pennant race stuff too early in the process, in the weeding-out stage. I’m pretty ok with considering it later on. I mean, when it comes down to it, these awards are, by their nature, subjective.

Now… When you’re dealing with a couple of candidates like Lincecum and Johan… Do you think there’s a clear-cut choice? The way I see it, one could make a case for either and in that situation, I think the context in which they put up their numbers should be considered.

              • Jamal G. says:

I don’t think it’s a clear-cut choice by any means. That would be as idiotic as saying that Albert Pujols does that deserve to be the M.V.P. because of the Cardinals’ place in the standings (well, not quite as idiotic, but you get the point). I just think the K/9, Home Runs Allowed and FIP numbers are enough to he earn Lincecum the vote.

It would be nice for Santana to win it, however. According to his contract, his 2014 option for $25M kicks in with a Cy Young award. Imagine the Mets having to pay that kind of money in his age-35 season.

                • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi says:

Ha I had the same thought when I read about that option earlier today. I want them locked into that option.

    • Ivan says:

I’ll give to Lincecum but I wouldn’t mind at all if Johan won it.

  7. Mike Pop says:

now can we talk yankees on here or would ben not approve of that ?

  8. Mike Pop says:

Minny would have the better chance going against rays or eventually sox or angels right ? with their pitching

  9. Ivan says:

CHW 1st in HR’s but 11th in offense. Tells ya the value of OBP.

  10. Mike A. says:

So the Twins can win with five young pitchers in the rotation, but the Yanks can’t win with two?

    • Jamal G. says:

You just know the rest of that quote was edited.

      Probably went something like this:

“So the Twins can win with five young pitchers in the rotation, but the Yanks can’t win with two? Fuck that, all these dumb asses in the media wanna pop off at the mouth, actin’ like they know shit, fuck ‘em. Punk asses. Wait ’till next year, you think you saw some shit when Joba owned that hick-bitch, Josh Becket? My dude, please.

  11. Mike Pop says:

Minny should really get another bat in their lineup and they could take that division easily

  12. Ivan says:

What a bust has John Danks been. I betcha Texas wouldn’t look back at that deal.

  13. Samsonov KGB says:

magics a brewin’ at the cell tonight

  14. Ivan says:

I will say this, I feel great today now that Cashman is coming back. Nothing has gone right for the yanks this season, even the little things and now that the season is over and signing Cashman for three years is just a good start for great things in 09.

    • A.D. says:

hopefully a sign of things to come

    • Mike A. says:

Seriously. Even if he left, that’s something they had to take care of quickly. It couldn’t linger that long with the offseason ready to begin and decisions about options needing to be made.

      • Joey H. says:

Yeah. I mean hes a nice guy. I always call him the magician lol. cause he gets alot of trades that for some reason come out of no where, most recently the pudge trade or you can say the same for the nady/marte trade. Hes a good guy who has an idea of whats going on. I think 08 was a learning experience of how you do not tinker with pitching. Starting and or Relief. Hopefully he can learn from his mistakes and get us a 2009 world series banner for the new stadium wall.

    • Steve says:

Yeah, and it tells you that the yanks are committed to the new direction. Not that they wont fill in with big FA signings, but the new core of the team will be built around pitching, most of it homegrown.

  15. Ivan says:

You know whats funny, teams like the Angels and Twins who don’t value OBP and make stupids outs on the basepaths are considered “fundamentally sound” and are agrressive and all that other BS, but teams like the Yanks, sox and even the Phils never get those consideration for “playing the right way”.

  16. Joey H. says:

Ha. I turn on TBS cause ESPN wasn’t carrying the game. And the first thing i said is … ” Oh and i thought i can get away from Ron Darling” lol

    • Mike A. says:

Heh. I don’t mind Darling, he’s the best of the Gary, Ron and Keith trio.

At least there’s no Frank Caliendo commercials this year.

      • Joey H. says:

No i know. I like Darling. He has a very humble voice and for one, is not a homer. My mom, before i turned her to the better way of life in being a Yankee fan was a huge fan of the Mets particularly during their 86 run. When she saw Hernandez calling the games she goes ” Oh my god, Joey. He sounds so gay! what happened!? “

      • Joey H. says:

I just love bashing SNY, their live Baseball coverage SUCKS.

      • TheLastClown says:

I saw one just before….with him playing McCain & some other dude playing Obama.

      • Steve says:

Ditto. Best of the bunch, by a long shot. Keith is good when he talks about hitting. When he talks pitching, he’s lost.

Gary Cohen is a Yankee hating douchebag who always has a look on his face like somebody in the room farted.

  17. A.D. says:

Thats why I don’t like advanced scouting reports……yikes

  18. Ivan says:

Every time I see Ernie Johnson I just think basketball or get the erge for the basketball season.

    • Joey H. says:

Speaking of basketball, Who Ya’ got this year?

      • Ivan says:

Well I haven’t really looked into the rosters yet and really got into in, but the west is stacked. I will go on a limb and say that the Cavs will come out of the East.

        • Joey H. says:

Yeah i was a huge nets fan. once they ridded Kidd it took my heart lol then they got rid of jefferson! i was like WTF! lol. but yea we have that huge chinese dude. and carter. who knows maybe in a very weak east we can pull somethin’ off

          • Ivan says:

Well they got Deven Harris who’s a explosive young player, don’t know if he’s a pure point but he can ball. I felt that signing Carter was a mistake cuz he’s gotten older and he’s not as explosive as he once was. Yi has alot of talent but don’t know if he can harness it and he might be soft.

            • Joey H. says:

Yeah well YI is at where yao ming was ages ago lol. If you didnt see the movie/documentary– the year of the yao i suggest you do. it was really good and i dont even like the guy. but it told the story of him not knowing jack shit about basketball and now one of the best centers out there.

  19. Steve says:

I dunno if anyone else caught the last “Joe Girardi Show” (I know, I know) but he said some interesting stuff if you listened carefully to the last part of the show where they talked about next years team. I came away with a few impressions.

    1-#1 priority is pitching.

2-Gardner is the front runner to land the CF job at this point, barring a big trade. He credited the late season winning streak in part to his fielding and base running. Said “he saved a few wins with his glove”.

3-Cano will be shopped this off season.

4-Andy will be back, Moose won’t.

    • TheLastClown says:

Definitely not fond of 3 and 4.

      • Steve says:

        Shopped, not necessarily dealt.

I suspect more was going on with Cano than we know about. When he benched him late in the year, he made it clear that he spoke to him numerous times before that about getting his act together. Benching was a last resort.

Cano might be one of those guys you have to constantly stay on top of, and to be honest, its hard enough to win baseball games when everyone in the room IS trying their best. Not giving your best effort is tough to take.

    • Joey H. says:

Yes, Point 1 . In the Jorge Posada Centerstage, he said the same exact thing. I don’t remember him saying Robbie wont be back though. He said Andy will pitch again. He doesn’t know where. Andy has said Yankees or bust a lot lately so ill suspect hes coming back hopefully injury free. And it was just an instinct about moose. A lot of people have been saying that. Maybe he did tell Joe that he wasn’t coming back. WHOOO KNOWWWWS

    • Ivan says:

Unless you can get something pretty good for Cano, it would be wise to keep him. You just can’t give up on the guy over one bad season.

Look what the media is doing to Wright, he had a terrific year and everybody want him traded.

      • Joey H. says:

I personally feel that change instance was ALOT better. If you notice, the batters who have more simple stances put better wood on the ball. and before someone jumps on me, OF COURSE, THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULE. but look at guys like Mark Teixera, Chipper Jones, Manny Ramirez. Derek Jeter(even though he has a unique approach to hitting) but you get my point. Fancy-schmanchy doesn’t always work out.

        • Joey H. says:

Oh and was i was saying, He’ll be” back in Black” in pinstripes next year, but if we have the opportunity to get a young legit pitcher for him, especially if we cant get our mitts on CC, then ill take the O-dogg. That is a HEALTHY O-Dogg

        • Ivan says:

Right his stance really help him be more balance. Hopefully they give him a chance to see what he can do in that new stance. I really think Cano is gonna blow up next season.

          • Joey H. says:

Potential Number 2 hitter if he can cut down the strike outs which i really believe he will if the stance is more straight forward and balanced.

            • Ivan says:

he’s never had a problem striking out, infact this season he made more contact this season than any of his previous seasons, but he has to improve his plate disipline. He doesn’t have to be Jason Giambi, but if he can be slight above average with the plate disipline he’s gonna be dangerous.

              • Joey H. says:

That’s what i mean. I’ve seen him swing at plenty of bad pitches. He should have savored his time with Abreu to concentrate on his 2 strike hitting. Once he gets comfortable and feels invincible with two strikes that OBP will soar.

      • A.D. says:

Well thats absolutely retarded, because some idiot who has a radio show think they should trade him to bring in a vet….what are they going to do trade Wright for Holliday, and then they’ll win a world series? Doesn’t seem like a logical plan to me

        • Joey H. says:

Hey then they can be JUST as bad if the Mets make that move!

        • Mike A. says:

The night they were eliminated, the comments on Metsblog were blowin’ up with Wright for Lincecum/Felix talk.

          • Joey H. says:

Let me tell you something you already know. Met fans are DEFINATELY bandwagoners. With the exception of the guys in their 40′s-50′s with the pins on their hats and what have you. But 2006 totally spoiled them. Totally. And now they suddenly think they are a traditionally winning team. Silly Met fan. Rings are for Yankees.

    • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi says:

I go back and forth on this, but I think I’m pro Andy staying and Moose going. Moose’s 2008 was awesome (and really fun to watch), but the fact remains that he’s going to be 40 in 2009 and his 2008 looks like an outlier compared to his recent seasons. Andy is going to be 37. I don’t know, I tend to place a lot of emphasis on age. Clearly Moose was much more valuable to the Yankees in 2008, but 2009 isn’t 2008.

      • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi says:

PS: I should clarify, the position described above assumes that only one of Andy or Moose can be in pinstripes in 2009. If the Yanks could sign both those guys on one-year deals I’d be all for it whether I think they’ll be great next year or not. Nothing wrong with having some more arms in the mix (especially since, right now, it looks like they could use an arm or three in the rotation).

      • Joey H. says:

I wouldn’t bring back moose to make a shitty rotation less shitty. If he comes back i would like to put him in a rotation with CC wang Joba hughes and him as the 4/5 starter. With a great staff like that and depending on what we can do with our hitting, hopefully we can get him what he deserves, a championship ring. But if hes just another staple in a way too young on some ends and way to old on others rotation then its not worth it let the man go out on top.

  20. Joey H. says:

I find it interesting that Ron Gardenhire wants to “Bang” Blackburn.

  21. Mike A. says:

Two strikeouts for Mauer already? He struck out twice in a game SIX times all year.

  22. Steve says:

The Twins are playing this game largely because they are strong defensively up the middle, have 5 young pitchers in the rotation who they stuck with all year, and lead the league hitting with RISP.

    They’re like the Anti-Yankees.

  23. Mike A. says:

Remember when Ken Griffey Jr. was the best player on the planet? The times are a changin’.

  24. A.D. says:

    Fundamentally sound double

  25. Ivan says:

Did anybody hear or see the press conference where Al Davis called the coach he fired Kiffen a liar and stuff. Man the Raiders are a mess.

    • A.D. says:

yeah, but they got McFadden and Russell, steps in the right direction, they were a mess as long as Kiffen was there, regardless of how he performed, too much shit already said

      • Ivan says:

Yea but the Raiders line on both offense and defense is quite below average and your not gonna win when your O and D lines gets smacked up all the time. Davis has to understand that it’s not the flashy stuff that win football games.

    • Joey H. says:

I know jack about the NFL, but Al Davis constantly saying ‘you people” got on my nerves.

      • Steve says:

Why does that bother you people?

        • Joey H. says:

Listen before i need to teach you people a lesson lol. Nah but when he says it over and over and over it gets annoying. I love addressing people and saying “you people” its an instant way to piss someone off

          • Steve says:

I know, some phrases get on my nerves as well. But the guy is 78. At certain ages you expect a guy to be a bit politically incorrect and a bit annoying.

            • Joey H. says:

Yea i remember when King George was at the ground breaking for the new yankee stadium he was like ” we are doing this for YOU PEOPLE” lol

    • Mike A. says:

I saw that, Davis also said he wasn’t going to honor the remainder of the contract and not pay the rest of the money Kiffen’s owed. Fuck that shit, if that was me you’d be getting a call from my lawyers.

  26. A.D. says:

    Wow Pierzynski held on

  27. Steve says:

On the plus side, at least AJ Brz-whats-his-face got his clock cleaned.

  28. Joey H. says:

What is Danks’ origin? Is he purebred Chisock? whats his history. i know hes a kid.

  29. Mike A. says:

Would it be ironic if Pierzynski hit a walk-off homer off Nathan?

  30. The Honorable Congressman Mondesi says:

Um… Does anyone else find it inappropriate for the Sox’ mascot to be sitting behind homeplate making weird motions when Blackburn is on the mound?

  31. Joey H. says:

So I know its off topic but the games been a little … well .. boring. Anyone like Entourage or Dexter? the T.V. series’ that is.

    • Jamal G. says:

Huge “Entourage” fan, heard a lot of good things about “Dexter” from my friends, but haven’t checked it out.

      • AndrewYF says:

Definitely check it out. As Entourage deteriorates, you can acquire a younger, fresher show.

      • Joey H. says:

I love it. If you have HBO on demand the episodes are up. You should start watching dexter man. its SICK. the second season was gripping as all hell. If i can find it ill get you the link so you can catch up. you wont be sorry you started watching it. But as for entourage, what is the show about lol. ive been watching it for 5 seasons or however many there have been and i still cant figure what the moral or what have you, of what the show is. but nonetheless its entertaining.

        • Jamal G. says:

It’s loosely based on the life of Mark Wahlberg and his journey through the Hollywood movie scene. All the characters are loosely based on real-life characters in Wahlberg’s life. Some of the movie projects are also semi-real.

I have HBO on Demand, and I love it. True Blood and The Life and Times of Tim are my new favorites.

What’s the deal with Dexter? Is he actually a serial killer?

          • Joey H. says:

Hes a Bloodspatter analysis for the LAPD. But hes got this like calm rage inside of him and he kills by night. He kills like rapist, serial killers, only people that are deserving of it. You’ll love it. Ill find the link asap. and i know what entourage is based on but i mean like where the heck is the show going. its about NOTHING but its so damned entertaining.

            • Jamal G. says:

Oh, I guess you can describe it as a guy (Vince) who gets instant success, allows it to inflate his ego (spitting in the face of Alan Gray, studio head of Warner Bros.), and now finds himself struggling to attain his former star. All while his best friend is finding his path and a conflict of interest is developing.

              I fucking hate E.

    • Mike A. says:

This is how baseball is played outside of NY.

  32. Joey H. says:

No language barrier on the team. Especially when you play in “Octover” … yes “OctoVer” lmao

  33. Mike A. says:

Holy shit it’s the 7th already?

And why is Mauer bunting? For the love of God. For all of you that want Giambi to bunt, that’s what it would look like, except he’s at least 1.5 Molina’s slower.

  34. Mike A. says:

“And that’s why Cabrera’s a winner everywhere he goes.”

Except for, you know, those 7.5 years in Montreal.

  35. Mike A. says:

There’s been 3 hits total this game.

  36. Mike A. says:

    Yikes. That was no cheapy.

  37. Ivan says:

    Yo Thome Crush that ball.

  38. Steve says:

    Fuckity fuck fuck.

  39. Mike A. says:

Danks is at 93 pitches. Jenks for two? You at least have to have him up next inning, right?

  40. Jamal G. says:

I know some are hesitant to offer arbitration to Pudge, and I can see why. However, do you think teams strong-arm players into declining an arbitration offer? For example, if the Yankees tell Pudge that Jorge Posada and Jose Molina are numbers one and two, respectively, on the depth chart, do you think that would force Pudge to decline the arb’ offer from the Yankees in favor of playing time?

Honesly, I don’t think the Yankees even have to go that far. I don’t see why Pudge would accept an arb’ offer from the Yanks, he must have realized that there’s no way he’s getting as much playing time as Jorge Posada, let alone Jose Molina.

  41. Mike A. says:

Time to quit fuckin’ around. Get Nathan in there.

  42. The Honorable Congressman Mondesi says:

    I still don’t like Junior. I can’t help it. 1995.

  43. Ivan says:

I think Thome ball just landed.

  44. Mike A. says:

Mijares has filthy, filthy stuff. If you think Coke’s good, watch this.

  45. Ivan says:

  46. The Honorable Congressman Mondesi says:

Does anyone agree that the ChiSox’ stadium is kind of a rip-off of Yankee Stadium (’76-’08 version)? Until a couple of years ago the seats were all the same light-blue as the Stadium’s seats, the shape is similar, the main complaint was always about the steep grade of the upper deck, etc. Just always seemed funny to me that they built a stadium that’s seemingly derivative of a park that nobody ever claimed to be an architectural marvel.
