The sympathetic side of Carl Pavano

No Yankee fan thinks too highly of Carl Pavano these days. While Pavano has managed to make three starts in a row for the first time since 2005, Yankee fans generally feel that he took the team for a ride. But what if he didn’t? What if he’s a tragic figure? That’s the question Tyler Kepner poses and attempts to answer in today’s Times. Pavano certainly should be blamed for his injuries, but maybe there’s a sympathetic side to this tale as well.

It’s all fun and games to joke about how he was injured for 4 years, there aint no disputing that, but the truth is everyone is human and you assume they have some sense on decency. Hopefully the guy is able to salvage something of his career, so he’s not just remembered as that guy who was always injured. I’m done with it.

There is always to sides to every story. It’s nice to hear Carl’s side for once. I’m sure the truth, as always, is somewhere in the middle.
I’ve always been a sucker for potential. That’s why it’s hard for me to give up on players like Pavano, Melky, IPK and Hughes.
I wouldn’t mind them bringing back Carl for another year, maybe not for $13 million, but $5 million sounds about right.

two sides. I’m a freaking idiot.

Wouldn’t ONE-sided stories being Commie Propaganda?

Russian UN Delegate: Of course, the Soviet Union would be more than happy to help you get back your submarine.

American UN Delegate [puzzled]: Soviet Union?… I thought you guys broke up?

Russian UN Delegate: Yes, that is what we wanted you to think!!!

“During this fight, I’ve seen a lot of changing, in the way you feel about me, and in the way I feel about you. In here, there were two guys killing each other, but I guess that’s better than twenty million. I guess what I’m trying to say, is that if I can change, and you can change, everybody can change! ”

            Indeed, Rocky, indeed!

“i posted this earlier in the previous thread but i’m just posting it again to hear some more feedback.”

Ugh… always a recipe for disaster. Here’s your feedback: It sucked the first time and we didn’t want to hear it again.

But Ben, Neil is trying to become the next GM. Why do you a crush a boy’s dream of having Felipe Lopez be a backup infielder?

        • Steve

I was looking forward to having Jeter as a corner outfielder and a full season of Brett Gardner in CF, myself.

That’s an OF with some pop, my friend.

The Supreme Court has roundly rejected prior restraint. I did not watch my buddies die face down in the mud in ‘Nam so Neil’s comments could be deleted.

Would 1-year, $2 million be reasonable (or even feasible) in the eyes of the Yankee brass?

“Pavano certainly should be blamed for his injuries”

…really, Ben? That seems unnecessarily harsh; you can’t blame him for bone chips in his elbow, for example. I’ll grant that you can probably blame him for the car crash, though.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Ben K.

Not all of his injuries, but certainly his failure to report back problems and his car-crash-related injuries as well. Those aren’t minor issues.

      • RustyJohn

Actually, I’d go so far to say that he can’t be blamed for not reporting the car accident injuries. Here was a guy who was already lambasted by the media and teammates as being soft and faking injuries. So he tried to pitch his way through the rib injuries because he felt ashamed he would let his teammates down. I remember when he mentioned he might need Tommy John surgery and the team was denying it- he described a “grabbing” sensation he felt in his elbow- for weeks 9 out of 10 people on the blogs and reporters in the media skewered this guy as if he was making this shit up- yes, he is a big pussy- he magically used the powers of his mind to tear his ligament to shreds or came up with some way to make it looked like he needed surgery when he actually didn’t.

In fact, as the story indicates, if he would have just said from jump street that he was injured he wouldn’t have had a domino effect that kept him out the better part of four years. A no win situation from a public opinion stand point.

On Braves blogs do they call Mike Hampton a big puss too?

        • RustyJohn

To clarify- I am not saying anyone on this blog specifically called Pavano a part of the female anatomy- using that term to describe the overwhelming opinion that many through the great 50 states of ours (and Puerto Rico) have had towards one C. Pavano.

          • RustyJohn

To clarify- I did not mean to in any way leave out those individuals who have opinions of Carl Pavano who happen to be in Guam or the US Virgin Islands. Although, I am sure that the majority opinion there has been that, from 2005-2008, Carl Pavano has been a big pussy.

            • RustyJohn

To clarify- I in no way shape or form meant to leave out any individuals who may be overseas in military service, or in the Canal Zone who may have thought aloud, “I just pulled some guy out of a burning tank in Iraq after having my leg blown off by an IED, who is this pussy Pavano with the bruised buttocks?”

To be certain, that was an opinion of many withing the 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, the Canal Zone and overseas in our armed forces, though not necessarily everyone.

Further, I in no way shape or form meant to politicize this issue by bringing the conflict in Iraq up while discussin Carl Pavano’s buttocks. However, I believe Alyssa Milano may have a metaphorical IED in her vagina in the form of a venereal disease.
