Bullpen coughs it up for Hughes

By

5-0-0, bitches.

AzFL Peoria (3-2 loss to Phoenix) Yanks’ prospects are blogging about their experience in the AzFL … check it out
Austin Jackson: 0 or 4, 2 K – 0 for his last 13
Juan Miranda: 2 for 4, 1 2B, 1 K – doubled off a guy you may have heard of
Phil Hughes: 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 10-2 GB/FB – 47 of 79 pitches were strikes (59.5%) … strikeouts & grounders, that’s vintage Phil Hughes right there baby … he was named AzFL Pitcher of the Week after the game
Jeff Marquez: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 1-0 GB/FB – 8 of 13 pitches were strikes (61.5%)

HWB Waikiki was off today, like the rest of the league.

Loyal reader Angel provided a list of the Yankees’ players in the Dominican Winter League, here’s what we got:

These players aren’t necessarily on the team’s active roster, nor are they guaranteed any playing time, but these are the teams that hold their rights. A-Rod won’t even do so much as put a uniform on for Escogido.

You can see some other winter ball assignments here, and follow along with everyone’s progress here.

Can’t wait to see Licey in action, they are always the shit.

  2. A.D. says:

Hughes out-dueled Scherzer for those 5 innings.

How on fire is Miranda to start the fall league

  3. Why would A-Rod “sign” with Escogido if he won’t play with them?

  4. http://pinstripealley22.blogspot.com/ says:

    A-Rod play with Escogido in 94….just bat .194(like 35ab)

  5. TS says:

Miranda loves him some righties. Concerned with Hughes and his low strike rate %. That killed him and Kennedy both in NY.

    • Handtius says:

Hughes’ low strike out rate %…that’s a joke, right? 10 Ks in 10 innnings is bad?

      • Lanny says:

We don’t know what he was working on and what he was throwing.

I’m sure he could get ore K’s if he wanted but at what cost?

Isn’t it better for him to develop his secondary pitches??

        Jeez.

      • jersey says:

low strike rate not low strike out rate…and yea i think he has to get it up to about 60-65 percent

        • Mike A. says:

Yeah, but the difference between his strike rate tonight and say, 65-66% is like, 4 pitches. That’s 4 checked swings not going his way. Don’t sweat it too much.

          • jersey says:

            yea i agree…on a side note…boy would i give anything to get victorino…

            • Mike A. says:

Nah, he’s over-rated, especially these days. There’s not much difference between him and Justin Christian.

              • jersey says:

well big diff is jchrist is a 28 yr old career minor leaguer and victorino is a leader, starting cf, and a big part of what seems to be a world series club…u have to give victorino a lil more credit than that…i think

              • Ivan says:

I sorta disagree with ya there. Yea not a star but come on, Christian is a career minor leaguer albeit if he was in any other organization would of gotten a shot quicker.

Nevertheless, he’s a swithc hitter, with great speed, plays all three outfielder position and has a great arm. Hey like you said, you need consistency and stability, and Victorino is just that. He’s just a good solid player.

          • TS says:

Good point on both sample size and pitch selection. Just seems like he and Kennedy are always less than MLB avg (which I thought was 66%), even when crushing the minors.

  6. Marc says:

On a side note, I got to attend todays game, and afterwards I talked to Austin Jackson. He gave me his autograph, and I told him that he will be the future center fielder. His response was “I hope so!”

  7. Marc says:

Oh and Jeff Marquez’s stuff was just nasty!

    • Ivan says:

      What about Hughes?

      • Marc says:

His stuff was nasty too. The only ER was from a homerun that just made it over the wall(345ft). It would have been an easy fly ball at Yankee stadium. He didn’t look quite as dominant, and did not get that many strikeouts. He also seemed a little upset as he wasn’t getting the strikeouts, but no one could really get a decent hit off him. Almost all grounders.

The game was lost by a Seattle pitcher who allowed 2 homeruns(3 ER).

  8. Accent Shallow says:

Here’s hoping we can get a scouting report sometime soon concerning velo/pitches he was working on/etc.

    Maybe Keith Law?

    • Ivan says:

Keith Law is at the AzFL, and has written some stuff about some of the players. I assume he might do the same with Hughes.

    • Mike R. says:

According to Pinstripes Plus he is working on his cutter and change up. I don’t know what his hitting on the guns though.

  9. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

Where is Melvin Croussett pitching this winter, or should I say, what team needs an ace?

  10. Bo says:

    Victorino is Justin Christian?

I hope that was a joke.

  11. Reggie C. says:

Pinstripesplus spoke wiht Hughes and reports that the slider has been scrapped in favor of the cutter. This isn’t breaking stuff i know, but it reads that Hughes has completely dropped the slider, and will now focus on the cutter and changeup.

Guys, i gotta question about basic pitching. How is the cutter different from the changeup??

    • Cutters cut. Changeups change.

    • ceciguante says:

cutter is short for “cut fastball,” and is typically a fastball thrown so that it makes a sharp lateral break right before reaching the hitter, like a quick cut to the left when thrown by a righty like mariano rivera, breaking untold bats. cutters are typically a couple mph slower than a regular (4-seam) fastball, i think.

changeup is completely different. it’s based on deception, designed to look just like a fastball when delivered, i.e. same arm angle, release point and arm speed as the pitcher’s fastball. but the grip is different, usu farther back in the palm, so the ball is 10-15 mph slower than the fastball, and the hitter thinks “fastball!”, only to jump out in front and yank it foul or miss completely. if it’s good, the bottom drops out just before it crosses the plate (see santana, johan).

  12. JD says:

With Jake Peavy officially now on the trade market. Who would you be willing to part with to try to acquire him? Its been said that a package like the one Arizona gave up to get Haren will be the way to acquire Peavy.
