Yanks won’t renew Meacham’s contract

By

According to Ed Price of the Star Ledger, the Yankees will not renew the contract of third base coach Bobby Meacham. There was considerable criticism of Meacham this year, as he made a few obvious blunders early on. On Baseball Prospectus yesterday, Steven Goldman took a look at the Meacham situation, concluding that the Sox and Rays made more outs-at-home blunders. It’s tough to break this down by numbers, though, since not every situation is the same. We saw Meacham blow what should have been obvious calls, and have therefore called for blood. Today, we got it.

I’m available to coach third next season.

How hard could it be? Belt buckle for bunt, hand across the shirt for steal, two claps for swing-away, left arm for take. Basic. At least in little league.

eh, if it makes them feel better, i guess it’s the right decision.

    just seems like misplaced blame.

he ran a few too many guys into outs, but what we don’t know is how many additional runners scored on aggressive sends. we tend not to remember the times the runner was safe.

my favorite will be the slew of posts criticizing Meacham’s playing career as if that has some bearing on his ability to coach 3B.

Since everyone seems to love Bowa, I would be curious how many baserunners were thrown out at home while he was 3B coach.

Also, it’s important to note that just because no one is thrown out at home doesn’t mean you’re a good 3B coach. Holding up a guy at third is almost as bad as getting him thrown out, but no one complains too much about that.

  5. Looks like Bullpen Coach Mike Harkey is gonna have to be our new scapegoat/whipping boy.

YOU HEAR US, HARKEY? YOU’RE ON NOTICE, FUCKO. SHAPE UP OR SHIP OUT.

I feel like this is more about taking Meachem out of the club house than it is about sending guys from third. I seem to recall reading an article that claimed Meachem was the guy who Girardi went to for advice and counsel. If I am recalling correctly this was presented as a bad thing and maybe Joe should have been consulting with his other coaches or getting more experienced counsel. On a separate note I also have read several places (including here) the opinion that a stronger personality than Meachem was needed to be a presence for this team.

i am going to go out on a limb and guess that you read this on Abraham’s blog…

not disagreeing, since i really have no idea, but Abraham has been railing on Meacham since the day he was hired.

na na na na hey hey hey goooooodbye…

but its about getting girardi to use opeople like tony pena, who was not utilized because girardi wanted to use “his people”

well joe joe, you had your chance to use your people and they sucked. now its time for their people

    • steve (different one) says:

most managers are given the opportunity to bring in their own coaching staff. this isn’t some crazy demand from Girardi.

Girardi wasn’t perfect, he has areas to work on and improve.

but on the other hand, watching Torre burn through his bullpen last night and get left holding the bag did bring back some fond memories.

    It’s spelled Meacham

  11. Bo says:

Meachem was terrible at 3b. We don’t need stats to know that. The coaching staff needs to change. Some people have to be held responsible for a 3rd place finish.

  12. Joey H. says:

Move Pena to third and then Willie oh Willie where art thou?

  13. dkidd says:

myth: larry bowa is single-handedly responsible for robbie cano

myth: larry bowa’s fiery personality and passion for winning were missed by the 2008 yankees

truth: larry bowa is the best third base coach in mlb

  14. 1996 Yankee Alumni Society says:

Thank God! Why did it take so long? Meacham was obviously to blame for the Yanks not winning a World Series in the 80′s (as a player) and for the Yanks missing the playoffs in 2008 as a coach.
Kidding aside – maybe Hank is more like his father than I imagined.
