It must be good to throw 99

By Benjamin Kabak

No matter how maddeningly ineffective and inconsistent his is, someone will always be happy to pay Kyle Farnsworth over $4 million a year to pitch. This time, the Royals have emerged as the winners of the dubious Kyle Farnsworth Sweeptstakes. They get Krazy Kyle for the not-so-discount price of $9.25 million over two seasons. As you can imagine, Royals fans are not so thrilled about the news. Have fun with that, guys.

Mike Pop says:

Kyle “There she goes” Farnsworth isn’t any more use to us than Hubert J. Farnsworth.

I enjoyed that comment from the post that is linked

Infamous says:

I feel bad for royals fans.

Chasing27 says:

I think he might thrive with KC. They lose so much that Farnsy should not be singled out for blowing all the games in the laters innings.

Jake K. says:

That is a team without a plan.

Adam says:

yeah, but he doesn’t even thrown 99 anymore.

still, i liked his glasses.

Mike Pop says:

I like his stuff… But he couldnt use it right

I like his stuff… But he couldnt use it right

Greg Maddux’s 91 MPH fastball with deception and life = “stuff”
Kyle Farnsworth’s 98 MPH fastball that’s straight as an arrow = not “stuff”

Bad signing for KC b/c they are so small market and w/o direction.

Had one of the large market teams (NY, LA, Chi, Bos-type) teams made the same move I think it would have been fine b/c they have the payroll flexibility to waste money. KC does not have that same luxury and at 4+ mil not a good move for them, they could have used that money better elsewhere. Who knows maybe that leaves them with not enough money for long-term contract for Grienke and he ends up coming here!

jsbrendog says:

i predict he is traded to someone else before that contract is up.

mike says:

Agreed. But I did just read thier payroll is up to 75 mil. I would not have guessed that!

Farns-worthless paid 9.25/2 not so worthless after all – shocking. I can’t believe he got paid that much. Krazy is not the word… insanity rules in KC.

Januz says:

I am no fan of fan of Farnsworth, but he was far from the WORST signing they ever made. Ed Whitson, Pavano, Igawa, and Wright come to mind. And he was better than the guy they traded him for (IRod). Finally, he seemed to enjoy playing here, so I wish him the best.

Alan says:

I agree with this, for every boneheaded decision he’d make on the mound he came through for us. He was a decent reliever and better than alot of the arms teams throw out there every night.

It seemed like Joe Girardi finally got his head on right last season and he was doing quite well. Then we pulled the plug on him to trade for Pudge which, while understandable, turned out to be a terrible move. I wish him all the best in Kansas City.

Ben K. says:

he came through for us.

What?

Mike Pop says:

Remember, he pitched 9 perfect innings this year ? That was worth all the $$$ we gave him

Alan says:

I never said he was worth all of the money we threw at him, but he wasn’t as bad as everyone proclaims him to have been either.

Ben K. says:

What you said is that “he came through for us,” and I’m just wondering when exactly he came through for us. It’s not like he was some amazing end-game pitcher. He lost his 8th inning spot halfway through his contract and never recovered it. I’d hardly say that’s coming through for us. It’s being a big disappointment.

A.D. says:

At least Farns was healthy most of the time… unlike Karsay

A.D. says:

Farns will end up performing well under the radar, and they’ll end up trading him down the stretch to a team desperate for a pen arm

radnom says:

Where he will implode.

steve (different one) says:

i can actually see what the Royals are doing. they are using the FA market to replace the young relievers they traded for Crisp and Jacobs.

not a terrible strategy, though i am not sure whether Crisp/Jacobs/Farnsworth were the correct 3 players to target to implement this strategy.

in a vacuum though, this is a pretty bad signing. why should Farns get 15% more per year than Marte or Affledt?

jsbrendog says:

very good question.

radnom says:

It is the 20% “come play for our shit-hole team” tax.

Jake K. says:

Problem is that the Royals are adding expensive pieces ($4.5 million per year for a set-up man) to a team that has no chance of competing.

Mike Pop says:

They could compete, you never know in that division

Matthew says:

I bet he pitches lights out for them, haha. Guarantee he dominates us once this year…haha.

No pressure in KC.

I heard there wasn’t a dry eye in General Joe’s office the day he had to break the news about the trade to “Farnsie.” Shame on all of you for piling on. You guys are heartless.
